Proton Shift Additivity And Substituent Interaction Parameters, Donald W. Beistel, Gary Chappell, W. Daniel Edwards Jan 1977

Proton Shift Additivity And Substituent Interaction Parameters, Donald W. Beistel, Gary Chappell, W. Daniel Edwards

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The 4-substituted acetophenone family is characterized and its shifts are correlated with those of nine families of 1, 4-disubstituted benzenes reported previously. Then a simple mathematical model is derived to account for the proton magnetic resonance shifts within families of 1, 4-disubstituted benzenes. The model suggests that the substituents interact by σ-bond polarization. The polarization model rationalizes shift additivity and is consistent with the qualitative relationship between the number of valence electrons on a substituent and its capacity to induce shifts. © 1977, American Chemical Society. Reliability Growth Apportionment, James K. Byers Jan 1977

Reliability Growth Apportionment, James K. Byers

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

A method is presented for apportioning reliability growth to the subsystems that make up a system in order to achieve the required reliability at least cost. Reliability growth apportionment is handled as an s-expected cost minimization problem subject to the constraint of meeting a system reliability requirement. The problem is formulated in terms of Duane's reliability growth model and is solved using geometric programming. The method can be useful in the early stages of system design to determine subsystem reliability growth that will allow a system reliability requirement to be met, and in the latter stages of system design when …

Final-State Effects In Carbon Auger Spectra Of Transition-Metal Carbides, M. A. Smith, L. L. Levenson Jan 1977

Final-State Effects In Carbon Auger Spectra Of Transition-Metal Carbides, M. A. Smith, L. L. Levenson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The carbon Auger spectra of TiC, VC, and Cr3C2 are measured with a resolution of 1.2 eV. Background subtraction is performed, and a deconvolution technique is used to remove energy-dependent broadening from the spectra. An analysis of the data in terms of density-of-states calculations, x-ray emission work, and x-ray photoelectron data shows that final-state effects dominate the Auger spectra. For all of the carbides three peaks are identified as spectral terms resulting directly from final-state hole interactions. Other peaks appearing in the Auger spectra can be identified without final-state considerations. © 1977 The American Physical Society.

Also, Additional Minima in the Reflectance Surface Not Associated with SEW Are Discussed. © 1977 the American Physical Society.

Geology Of The Stateline District, Utah-Nevada, Terry Moore Collins Jan 1977

Geology Of The Stateline District, Utah-Nevada, Terry Moore Collins

Masters Theses

"The rocks exposed in the Stateline District, Iron County, Utah and Lincoln County, Nevada, are Tertiary volcanics, which serve as hosts for gold and silver bearing quartz veins. The Miocene rhyolites and dellenites, a possible caldera, cupola-associated rock textures, and the faults and styles of deformations indicate the geologic setting of Stateline is in harmony with the tectonic framework of the southern Great Basin. Four map units, subdivided into nine members, are recognized. X-ray fluorescence analyses for SiO₂, TiO₂, Fe₂O₃, CaO, and K₂O differentiated the map units, while variations in the primary quartz, sanadine, plagioclase, biotite, hornblende, and total crystal …

Masters Theses

"The Raymond Widel barite prospect is two miles northeast of Blackwater Town, in parts of Sections 23, 24, 25, and 26, T49N, R19W, Cooper County, Missouri. Reported in the area since the 1850's barite-galena deposits have been sporadically mined.

The Burlington-Keokuk and Warsaw formations of Mississippian age are exposed. The former is composed of coarse-grained limestone with abundant fossils, and the latter is a fossiliferous cherty limestone. These reach a thickness of over 200 feet. Local structures are not significant, but regional fold and fault structures are present outside the area.

Exploration drilling consisted of 31 drill holes ranging from …

Geology Of The Al-Khums Area Northwestern Libya With Emphasis On The Stratigraphy And Biostratigraphy Of The Al-Khums Formation, Mostafa Juma Salem Jan 1977

Geology Of The Al-Khums Area Northwestern Libya With Emphasis On The Stratigraphy And Biostratigraphy Of The Al-Khums Formation, Mostafa Juma Salem

Doctoral Dissertations

"The dissertation represents a geologic study of an area bordering the Mediterranean Sea in northwestern Libya. About 1200 km2 were mapped and 28 stratigraphic sections were prepared.

The bedrock consists of 16 stratigraphic units of Mesozoic and Cenozoic age having a combined maximum thickness of about 750 meters. The oldest unit exposed, the Abu Shaybah Formation, is a redbed sequence of Triassic and Jurassic age. These beds are unconformably separated from Cretaceous carbonates (Garian Limestone, Ain Tobi Formation, and Gezzar Dolomite). These units in turn are overlain by the Miocene Al-Khums Formation. Younger Quaternary units consist of nearshore marine …

The Geology Of The Searchlight Mining District, Clark County, Nevada, John Stewart Bown Jan 1977

The Geology Of The Searchlight Mining District, Clark County, Nevada, John Stewart Bown

Masters Theses

"The general area of the Searchlight mining district has been the object of various studies by geologists since 1861. The Searchlight district is located in southern Clark County, Nevada in the eastern part of the Mojave Desert at the southern end of the Eldorado Mountains. Southern Clark County is characterized by a lack of Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks. A Precambrian complex of rocks mostly gneiss in the southwest corner of the district is non-conformably overlain by Tertiary extrusive rocks about 8,500 feet (2,590 meters) thick consisting of andesite, basalt, rhyolite, and pyroclastics. Both the gneiss and volcanic assemblage were intruded …

Heisenberg Theory Of Ferromagnetism: Constant Coupling Revisited, Harry A. Brown Jan 1977

Heisenberg Theory Of Ferromagnetism: Constant Coupling Revisited, Harry A. Brown

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Heinsenberg theory of ferromagnetism has been treated by many types of approximations; one of the more successful is known as constant coupling. The literature constants several different ways of arriving at results like those of the constant-coupling approximation, but proofs that they are indeed equivalent are lacking in some cases. It is shown that two of these methods are equivalent for spin 1/2 and explicitly demonstrated that both yield exactly the constant-coupling results, though simpler in use and concept than the latter. Finally, it is shown that one of the two methods yields the same Curie temperatures as constant …

Valence-Band Information From The Auger Kvv Spectrum Of Graphite, M. A. Smith, L. L. Levenson Jan 1977

Valence-Band Information From The Auger Kvv Spectrum Of Graphite, M. A. Smith, L. L. Levenson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Auger KVV and x-ray photoelectron valence-band spectra of atomically clean, well-ordered graphite are measured. After background subtraction is performed and a deconvolution technique is used to remove energy-dependent features from the Auger data, the transition density function is calculated for the graphite valence band. A comparison is made with other experimental work and with a density-of-states calculation. It is found that the transition density closely resembles the density of states if localized hole effects are considered. © 1977 The American Physical Society.

Lower Mississippian Sedimentation In Northwestern Montana, Forest E. Haines Jan 1977

Lower Mississippian Sedimentation In Northwestern Montana, Forest E. Haines

Doctoral Dissertations

"Thirty-three measured sections, nine with thin sections and insoluble residues, were studied to determine the depositional history of the Allan Mountain Limestone and the lower member of the Castle Reef Dolomite of the Madison Group in northwestern Montana.

The Allan Mountain base is a fossiliferous limestone, herein named the Brownback Gulch Member, which thickens and becomes cherty to the southwest where the section at Lone Butte resembles that of the Bridger Range Waulsortian-type reefs. A crinoidal lag deposit marks a dis- conformity at the top. In the overlying silty limestone member a thin black shale (Unit 1) grades into normal …

Geology Of The Southern Half Of The Stoutland, Missouri Quadrangle, Chester Encell Nichols Jan 1977

Geology Of The Southern Half Of The Stoutland, Missouri Quadrangle, Chester Encell Nichols

Doctoral Dissertations

"The dissertation area lies on the western flank of the Ozark uplift between Lebanon and Camdenton, Missouri. In the northwestern corner of the study area a portion of the Decaturville cryptoexplosive structure is exposed. The dominant structure outside the disturbed zone is a northwest-trending asymmetrical anticline with a subsidiary normal fault dipping southwest on the steeper southwest limb.

The area is mapped in considerable detail in order to describe subtle structural features. To overcome a problem of poor exposures, new key beds are defined which greatly increase structural control. Significant structures recognized as a result are the Dry Auglaize anticline, …

Energy Dependence Of Amorphizing Implant Dose In Silicon, John R. Dennis, Edward Boyd Hale Dec 1976

Energy Dependence Of Amorphizing Implant Dose In Silicon, John R. Dennis, Edward Boyd Hale

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The radiation-induced transformation from crystalline to amorphous silicon was studied using ion implantation. The ion energy was varied from 20 to 180 keV for Li+, N+, Ne+, Ar+, and Kr +. The energy dependence of the critical amorphizing dose was determined by electron spin resonance. Comparison of the data with theoretical calculations of the energy density deposited into atomic processes showed good agreement. This energy-dependent agreement gave evidence that energy density is important to the transformation at both low and high implantation temperatures.

Geophysical Approaches To Coal Exploration, Gerald B. Rupert Oct 1976

Geophysical Approaches To Coal Exploration, Gerald B. Rupert

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The exploration for minerals by geophysical means has been confined largely to the search for hydrocarbons and metallics while applications to coal exploration are somewhat limited. However, the surface reflection seismic technique has been successfully applied not only to delineating coal deposits but also as a tool in mine exploitation. Furthermore, channel waves generated underground have demonstrated potential in detecting the presence of faults in advance of the coal face and Vibroisis* experiments have been conducted whereby abandoned underground workings have been detected by surface seismic arrays. Examples of all of the preceeding are presented and discussed.

Excitation Of The N=2 State Of Atomic Hydrogen By Electron Impact In The Distorted-Wave Approximation, Ralph V. Calhoun, Don H. Madison, W. Neil Shelton Oct 1976

Excitation Of The N=2 State Of Atomic Hydrogen By Electron Impact In The Distorted-Wave Approximation, Ralph V. Calhoun, Don H. Madison, W. Neil Shelton

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The differential cross sections for excitation of the n=2 state of atomic hydrogen by the impact of electrons with energies of 54, 100, 136, and 200 eV are calculated in the distorted-wave approximation with exchange included. Cross sections for excitation of the 2s1/2, 2p1/2, and 2p3/2 states are calculated and summed to give the n=2 differential cross sections. The results of this calculation are compared with previous theoretical calculations and with recent absolute experimental data.

Inelastic Cross Sections For Molecules Interacting Through Dipole And/Or Quadrupole Potentials, Louis Biolsi Jr. Oct 1976

Inelastic Cross Sections For Molecules Interacting Through Dipole And/Or Quadrupole Potentials, Louis Biolsi Jr.

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Formal expressions for the lowest order inelastic contribution to the degeneracy averaged total cross section for both distinguishable and indistinguishable rigid diatomic molecules are obtained for molecules interacting through a multiple potential. Explicit expressions for the inleastic cross section are obtained for molecules interacting through permanent dipole-dipole, dipole-quadrupole, or quadrupole-quadrupole potentials. These results require the summation over only a single quantum number; the relative angular momentum quantum number. Thus, they are useful for analytic or numerical calculations.

Cross Sections For Excitation Of Atomic Hydrogen To The N=2, 3, And 4 States By 15-200-Kev Protons, John T. Park, Judith E. Aldag, Jacob M. George, Jerry Peacher

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cross sections for the processes H++H(1 s)H++H*(n = 2, 3, 4) have been extracted from the energy-loss spectra of 15- to 200-keV protons by using a spectrum-fitting technique. Absolute cross sections have been obtained by normalization of the spectra to the theoretical cross section through the use of the Born approximation at 200 keV. The cross-section curves are very similar in shape with maxima at 60 keV. The results have been compared with available theoretical calculations. The n = 2 and n = 3 cross-section measurements are in very good agreement in curve shape with Glauber-approximation …

Comparison Of Experimental And Theoretical Electron Ejection Cross Sections In Helium By Proton Impact From 5 To 100 Kev, M. Eugene Rudd, Don H. Madison Jul 1976

Comparison Of Experimental And Theoretical Electron Ejection Cross Sections In Helium By Proton Impact From 5 To 100 Kev, M. Eugene Rudd, Don H. Madison

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Absolute values of doubly differential cross sections are obtained for electron production in helium by 5- to 100-keV proton impact. The measured values along with earlier data at higher energies are compared with theoretical plane-wave Born-approximation functions obtained from a Hartree-Fock potential. Not only is good agreement obtained at high impact energies (above 300 keV), but fairly good agreement is found at low energies (below about 20 keV). For electrons ejected in the backward hemisphere, unexpectedly poor agreement is noted at intermediate energies where the measured cross sections dip to 50% of the calculated values in some cases. Singly differential …

Effect Of Angular Momentum On The Relaxation Time In A Multicomponent Gas Mixture, Louis Biolsi Jr. May 1976

Effect Of Angular Momentum On The Relaxation Time In A Multicomponent Gas Mixture, Louis Biolsi Jr.

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effects of molecular angular momentum (spin polarization) on the bulk viscosity and relaxation time in a multicomponent gas mixture are considered. Formal theoretical results are obtained, using the Wang Chang-Uhlenbeck approach to the kinetic theory of gases with internal states. The results are given in terms of integrals over the weighted quantum mechanical degeneracy averaged cross section.

Intermetallic Reactions In Vacuum-Deposited Nickel And Gold Films On (111) Silicon Single Crystals, K. H. Yoon, Gordon Lewis, L. L. Levenson Apr 1976

Intermetallic Reactions In Vacuum-Deposited Nickel And Gold Films On (111) Silicon Single Crystals, K. H. Yoon, Gordon Lewis, L. L. Levenson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Pure nickel and gold thin films were vacuum-deposited on (111) silicon single crystals. When Ni/Au/Si or Au/Ni/Si samples were heated to about 550° in situ, hexagonal or deformed hexagonal shaped crystallites were formed on the silicon substrates. The composition of these crystallites was determined by using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and scanning Auger microprobe methods. The crystallites were identified as NiSi2. The crystal-lites on the (111) silicon plane parallel to the surface appeared as regular hexagons while the inclined crystal-lites resembled trapezia. The results of Auger spectra and in-depth composition profiles for Ni, Au, and Si showed that the …

A Class Of Functional Equations And Mielnik Probability Spaces, S. J. Guccione, Caslav V. Stanojevic

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Let S be the unit sphere of a normed real linear space N and let (S, p) be a Mielnik space of dimension two. For p(x, y) = f(‖x+y‖), x, yєS, where /is a continuous, strictly increasing function from [0, 2] onto [0, 1], it has been shown that (S, p) being two dimensional is equivalent to N being an inner product space. In some polarization problems modeled on the unit sphere of an inner product space, the transition probability p(x, y) may not be as well behaved as p(x, y) = f(‖x + y‖). In order to provide a …

Rees and Stanojevic introduced a new class of modified cosine sums (equation omitted) and found a necessary and sufficient condition for integrability of these modified cosine sums. Here we show that to every classical cosine series f with coefficients of bounded variation, a Rees-Stanqjevic cosine sum gn can be associated such that gn converges to f pointwise, and a necessary and sufficient condition for Lx convergence of gn to f is given. As a corollary to that result we have a generalization of the classical result of this kind. Examples are given using the well-known integrability conditions. © 1976 American …

The Extremal Structure Of Locally Compact Convex Sets, J. C. Hankins, Roy M. Rakestraw

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Let X be a locally compact closed convex subset of a locally convex Hausdorff topological linear space E. Then every exposed point of X is strongly exposed. The definitions of denting (strongly extreme) ray and strongly exposed ray are given for convex subsets of E. If X does not contain a line, then every extreme ray is strongly extreme and every exposed ray is strongly exposed. An example is given to show that the hypothesis that X be locally compact is necessary in both cases. © 1976 Pacific Journal of Mathematics. All rights reserved.

Energy - Minerals - Environment: How Now Brown Cow?, Bobby G. Wixson

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Energy, technical, social, political, economic, and environmental problems are all people related problems which will continue to increase along with the world's population. With the growing demands for more energy and minerals along with the constraints of protecting the environment, new approaches must be considered to these complex problems.

Energy sources, modifications, alternatives, and new developments must be considered for the present as short term resources (next 25- 30 years) and in the future as long range research necessary to develop and implement new technology (25 years on). Major energy sources and their environmental considerations are generally classified as:

Radiative Lifetimes And Alignment Depolarization Cross Sections For Ybi And Ii By The Hanle Effect In A Flowing Helium System, F. H.K. Rambow, Laird D. Schearer

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The radiative lifetimes of the 17992-,25068-,28857-, 37414-, 40564-, and 44017-cm-1 neutral levels and the 30392-cm-1 ion level of Yb have been measured by the Hanle method in a fast-flowing He system. The lifetimes (in units of 10-9 sec) were found to be 820(20), 5.12(0.12), 14.4(0.4), 77.4(6.0), 9.32(0.6), 39.1(3.5), and 5.8(0.6), respectively. In a flowing system with He as a buffer gas the alignment depolarization cross sections with Yb were obtained and are reported here for the first time. They are (in units of 10-15 cm2) 5.0(1.0), 5.9(1.0), 5.9(1.2), 17.9(2.0), 28.2(3.0), 5.16(4.0), and 7.2(2.5), respectively. © 1976 The American Physical Society.
