Gas Pressure Dependence Of Microwave Pulses Generated By Laser-Produced Filament Plasmas, Alexander Englesbe, Jennifer Elle, Remington Reid, Adrian Lucero, Hugh Pohle, Matthew Domonkos, Serge Y. Kalmykov, Karl Krushelnick, Andreas Schmitt-Sody Oct 2018

Gas Pressure Dependence Of Microwave Pulses Generated By Laser-Produced Filament Plasmas, Alexander Englesbe, Jennifer Elle, Remington Reid, Adrian Lucero, Hugh Pohle, Matthew Domonkos, Serge Y. Kalmykov, Karl Krushelnick, Andreas Schmitt-Sody

Serge Youri Kalmykov

The plasma arising due to the propagation of a filamenting ultrafast laser pulse in air contains currents driven by the pulse that generate radiated electromagnetic fields. We report absolutely calibrated measurements of the frequency spectrum of microwaves radiated by the filament plasma from 2–40 GHz. The emission pattern of the electric field spectrum is mapped as a function of air pressure from atmosphere to 0.5 Torr. For fixed laser pulse energy, duration, and focal geometry, we observe that decreasing the air pressure by a factor of approximately 103 increases the amplitude of the electric field waveform by a factor of …

Smt-Based Constraint Answer Set Solver Ezsmt+ For Non-Tight Programs, Da Shen, Yuliya Lierler

Yuliya Lierler

Constraint answer set programming integrates answer set programming with constraint processing. System Ezsmt+ is a constraint answer set programming tool that utilizes satisfiability modulo theory solvers for search. The truly unique feature of ezsmt+ is its capability to process linear as well as nonlinear constraints simultaneously containing integer and real variables.

Learning To Love Data (Week): Creating Data Services Awareness On Campus, Katie M. Wissel, Lisa Deluca

Kathryn Wissel, MBA, MI

In May 2017, The Economist ran a cover story titled “The world’s most valuable resource is no longer oil, but data.” Given the continued growth in the sourcing, curating, and storing of data for academic research, it seems the academy would agree. In response to this growing need at Seton Hall, a midsized research university, the Seton Hall University (SHU) Libraries conducted an assessment of the current and emerging data requirements of the researchers and students on campus.

Lorentzian Lattices And E-Polytopes, Adrian Clingher, Jae-Hyouk Lee Sep 2018

Lorentzian Lattices And E-Polytopes, Adrian Clingher, Jae-Hyouk Lee

Adrian Clingher

We consider certain En-type root lattices embedded within the standard Lorentzian lattice Z n+1 (3 ≤ n ≤ 8) and study their discrete geometry from the point of view of del Pezzo surface geometry. The lattice Z n+1 decomposes as a disjoint union of affine hyperplanes which satisfy a certain periodicity. We introduce the notions of line vectors, rational conic vectors, and rational cubics vectors and their relations to E-polytopes. We also discuss the relation between these special vectors and the combinatorics of the Gosset polytopes of type (n − 4)21.

“Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.” - Albert Einstein. Pure mathematicians study abstract entities and structures that underlie mathematics. Although their general perspective is “math for math’s sake”, sometimes even the most abstract mathematics can have unexpected applications! Come learn some of these astonishing discoveries in the history of science and mathematics! They might make you thrilled but keep in mind real-world usage is rarely the goal behind developing a new mathematical theory.

Welcome to the world of pure mathematics! In this talk, we will focus on the theory of composition operators which is a …

Tailoring The Asymmetric Magnetoimpedance Response In Exchange-Biased Ni - Fe Multilayers, Ufuk Kilic, Carolina Ross, Carlos Garcia Sep 2018

Tailoring The Asymmetric Magnetoimpedance Response In Exchange-Biased Ni - Fe Multilayers, Ufuk Kilic, Carolina Ross, Carlos Garcia

Ufuk Kilic

The dependence of the asymmetric magnetoimpedance (MI) response on the directions of both the magnetic field and the exchange bias is studied for an [NiFe(60nm)/IrMn(35nm)]×5 multilayer system. The antiferromagnetic (AFM) layers create an exchange bias that shifts both the hysteresis loop and the MI response of NiFe; the strength of this coupling depends on the thicknesses of both the ferromagnetic layer and the AFM layer. Tuning the exchange-bias angle and the applied-magnetic-field direction provides a practical method to control the symmetry and the magnitude of the MI response. The observed asymmetric response can …

Learning From California’S Experience With Small Water System Consolidations: A Workshop Synthesis, Nell Green Nylen, Camille Pannu, Michael Kiparsky Sep 2018

Learning From California’S Experience With Small Water System Consolidations: A Workshop Synthesis, Nell Green Nylen, Camille Pannu, Michael Kiparsky

Nell Green Nylen

California recognizes a human right to safe, affordable drinking water. However, small and disadvantaged communities can find it especially challenging to fund the water systems necessary to achieve this goal. Small water systems are responsible for the bulk of the state’s drinking water quality violations, and an estimated 300 disadvantaged communities in California are served by systems that fail to meet state drinking water standards.

Water system consolidations can create economies of scale that help address persistent water system inadequacies in small and disadvantaged communities. More than 100 consolidation projects have been completed or are ongoing in California, and many …

Strong Equivalence And Conservative Extensions Hand In Hand For Arguing Correctness Of New Action Language C Formalization, Yuliya Lierler Aug 2018

Strong Equivalence And Conservative Extensions Hand In Hand For Arguing Correctness Of New Action Language C Formalization, Yuliya Lierler

Yuliya Lierler

Answer set programming  is a  declarative programming paradigm used in formulating combinatorial search problems and implementing distinct knowledge representation and reasoning formalisms. It is common that several related and yet substantially different answer set programs exist for a given problem. Uncovering precise formal links between these programs is often of value. This paper develops a methodology for establishing such links. This methodology relies on the notions of strong equivalence and conservative extensions and a body of earlier theoretical work related to these concepts. We use distinct answer set programming formalizations  of an action language C and a syntactically restricted action …

Robert W. Pattie Jr.

Solid deuterium (sD  is used as an efficient converter to produce ultracold neutrons (UCN). It is known that the sD must be sufficiently cold, of high purity and mostly in its ortho-state in order to guarantee long lifetimes of UCN in the solid from which they are extracted into vacuum. Also the UCN transparency of the bulk sD  material must be high because crystal inhomogeneities limit the mean free path for elastic scattering and reduce the extraction efficiency. Observations at the UCN sources at Paul Scherrer Institute and at Los Alamos National Laboratory consistently show a decrease of the UCN …

X-Ray Observations Of Bow Shocks Around Runaway O Stars. The Case Of Ζ Oph And Bd+43°3654, Jesus Toala, Lidia M. Oskinova, A. González-Galán, M. A. Guerrero, Richard Ignace, M. Pohl Aug 2018

X-Ray Observations Of Bow Shocks Around Runaway O Stars. The Case Of Ζ Oph And Bd+43°3654, Jesus Toala, Lidia M. Oskinova, A. González-Galán, M. A. Guerrero, Richard Ignace, M. Pohl

Richard Ignace

Non-thermal radiation has been predicted within bow shocks around runaway stars by recent theoretical works. We present X-ray observations toward the runaway stars ζ Oph by Chandra and Suzaku and of BD+43°3654 by XMM-Newton to search for the presence of non-thermal X-ray emission. We found no evidence of non-thermal emission spatially coincident with the bow shocks; nonetheless, diffuse emission was detected in the vicinity of ζ Oph. After a careful analysis of its spectral characteristics, we conclude that this emission has a thermal nature with a plasma temperature of T ≈ 2 × 106 K. The cometary shape of this …

The Strange Evolution Of The Large Magellanic Cloud Cepheid Ogle-Lmc-Cep1812, Hilding R. Neilson, Robert G. Izzard, Nobert Langer, Richard Ignace Aug 2018

The Strange Evolution Of The Large Magellanic Cloud Cepheid Ogle-Lmc-Cep1812, Hilding R. Neilson, Robert G. Izzard, Nobert Langer, Richard Ignace

Richard Ignace

Classical Cepheids are key probes of both stellar astrophysics and cosmology as standard candles and pulsating variable stars. It is important to understand Cepheids in unprecedented detail in preparation for upcoming Gaia, James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and extremely-large telescope observations. Cepheid eclipsing binary stars are ideal tools for achieving this goal, however there are currently only three known systems. One of those systems, OGLE-LMC-CEP1812, raises new questions about the evolution of classical Cepheids because of an apparent age discrepancy between the Cepheid and its red giant companion. We show that the Cepheid component is actually the product of a …

The MiMeS (Magnetism in Massive Stars) project is a large-scale, high-resolution, sensitive spectropolarimetric investigation of the magnetic properties of O- and early B-type stars. Initiated in 2008 and completed in 2013, the project was supported by three Large Program allocations, as well as various programmes initiated by independent principal investigators, and archival resources. Ultimately, over 4800 circularly polarized spectra of 560 O and B stars were collected with the instruments ESPaDOnS (Echelle SpectroPolarimetric Device for the Observation of Stars) at the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope, Narval at the Télescope Bernard Lyot and HARPSpol at the European Southern Observatory La Silla 3.6 m …

Context. The structure of the inner parts of Be star disks (≲ 20 stellar radii) is well explained by the viscous decretion disk (VDD) model, which is able to reproduce the observable properties of most of the objects studied so far. The outer parts, on the other hand, are not observationally well-explored, as they are observable only at radio wavelengths. A steepening of the spectral slope somewhere between infrared and radio wavelengths was reported for several Be stars that were previously detected in the radio, but a convincing physical explanation for this trend has not yet been provided.

Aims. We …

Period Change And Stellar Evolution Of Β Cephei Stars, Hilding R. Neilson, Richard Ignace Aug 2018

Period Change And Stellar Evolution Of Β Cephei Stars, Hilding R. Neilson, Richard Ignace

Richard Ignace

The β Cephei stars represent an important class of massive star pulsators that probe the evolution of B-type stars and the transition from main sequence to hydrogen-shell burning evolution. By understanding β Cep stars, we gain insights into the detailed physics of massive star evolution, including rotational mixing, convective core overshooting, magnetic fields, and stellar winds, all of which play important roles. Similarly, modeling their pulsation provides additional information into their interior structures. Furthermore, measurements of the rate of change of pulsation period offer a direct measure of β Cephei stellar evolution. In this work, we compute state-of-the-art stellar evolution …

Probing Wolf–Rayet Winds: Chandra/Hetg X-Ray Spectra Of Wr 6, David P. Huenemoerder, K. G. Gayley, Wolf-Rainer Hamann, Richard Ignace, J. S. Nichols, Lidia M. Oskinova, A. M.T. Pollock, Nobert S. Schulz, Tomer Shenar Aug 2018

Richard Ignace

With a deep Chandra/HETGS exposure of WR 6, we have resolved emission lines whose profiles show that the X-rays originate from a uniformly expanding spherical wind of high X-ray-continuum optical depth. The presence of strong helium-like forbidden lines places the source of X-ray emission at tens to hundreds of stellar radii from the photosphere. Variability was present in X-rays and simultaneous optical photometry, but neither were correlated with the known period of the system or with each other. An enhanced abundance of sodium revealed nuclear-processed material, a quantity related to the evolutionary state of the star. The characterization of …

Modeling X-Ray Emission Line Profiles From Massive Star Winds - A Review, Richard Igance Aug 2018

Modeling X-Ray Emission Line Profiles From Massive Star Winds - A Review, Richard Igance

Richard Ignace

The Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray telescopes have led to numerous advances in the study and understanding of astrophysical X-ray sources. Particularly important has been the much increased spectral resolution of modern X-ray instrumentation. Wind-broadened emission lines have been spectroscopically resolved for many massive stars. This contribution reviews approaches to the modeling of X-ray emission line profile shapes from single stars, including smooth winds, winds with clumping, optically thin versus thick lines, and the effect of a radius-dependent photoabsorption coefficient.

On The Binary Nature Of Massive Blue Hypergiants: High-Resolution X-Ray Spectroscopy Suggests That Cyg Ob2 12 Is A Colliding Wind Binary - Iopscience, Lidia M. Oskinova, David P. Huenemoerder, Wolf-Rainer Hamann, Tomer Shenar, A. A.C. Sander, Richard Ignace, H. Todt, R. Hainich Aug 2018

On The Binary Nature Of Massive Blue Hypergiants: High-Resolution X-Ray Spectroscopy Suggests That Cyg Ob2 12 Is A Colliding Wind Binary - Iopscience, Lidia M. Oskinova, David P. Huenemoerder, Wolf-Rainer Hamann, Tomer Shenar, A. A.C. Sander, Richard Ignace, H. Todt, R. Hainich

Richard Ignace

The blue hypergiant Cyg OB2 12 (B3Ia+) is a representative member of the class of very massive stars in a poorly understood evolutionary stage. We obtained its high-resolution X-ray spectrum using the Chandra observatory. PoWR model atmospheres were calculated to provide realistic wind opacities and to establish the wind density structure. We find that collisional de-excitation is the dominant mechanism depopulating the metastable upper levels of the forbidden lines of the He-like ions Si xivand Mg xii. Comparison between the model and observations reveals that X-ray emission is produced in a dense plasma, which could reside only at the photosphere …
