Determination Of Pb(Ii) In Natural Water With Dibromo-P-Methyl-Sulfonazo By The Light-Absorption Ratio Variation Approach, Jie Zhang

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Pb ions can react sensitively with dibromo-p-methylsulfonazo (DMSA) to form a blue complex, whose absorption is maximal at 630 nm. By means of the light-absorption ratio variation approach (LARVA), the direct determination of Pb was developed in 0.3 M nitric acid and plots of \Delta A_r^{-1} vs. c_{Pb}^{-1} are linear where \Delta A_r is the light-absorption ratio variation and c_{Pb} Pb(II) concentration is between 0 and 5.0 mg/L. The limit of detection (3\sigma) of Pb(II) is only 0.02 mg/L. This method was applied to direct analysis of natural water with satisfactory results.

Synthesis, Characterization, And Biological Activity Of Coordination Polymers Derived From Pyromellitic Dianhydride, Yogesh Patel, Ritu Dixit, Hasmukh Shanubhai Patel

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A new ligand, 2,5-bis(furan-2-ylmethylcarbamoyl)terephthalic acid (BFMTA), was synthesized using 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (pyromellitic dianhydride-PMDA) with furan-2-ylmethanamine (2-furfurylamine). New coordination polymers of the ligand (BFMTA) were also prepared using transition metal ions Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) metal salts. The coordination polymers and ligand were characterized by physico-chemical characteristics, magnetic susceptibilities, spectroscopic investigations, and thermogravimetry. Antimicrobial activity was tested using the agar-plate method against various strains of bacteria and spores of fungi. The results showed significantly higher antimicrobial activity of coordination polymers compared to the ligand.

Study Of Solid-State Stability Of The Zoto Binary System, Sandeep A. Waghuley

Turkish Journal of Physics

The ZOTO binary system contains different compositions of zinc oxide (ZnO) and tin oxide (SnO_2). These are important semiconductors and have been intensively explored for various applications. SnO_2, ZnO, and different mole ratios (70:30, 40:60, 30:70, and 20:80 SnO_2:ZnO) of the ZOTO system were prepared through proper thermal treatment in powder form. The comparative solid-state stability was investigated using thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA). The stability study showed that the SnO_2 material absorbs much lower heat (Ea = -72.06 kJ/g mol) compared with ZnO and their compositions. Thus the SnO_2 material shows stability at near room temperature operation. The …

Regular And Chaotic Motions In Hénon-Heiles Like Hamiltonian, Idugba Mathias Echi, Alexander Nwabeze Amah, Emmanuel Anthony

Turkish Journal of Physics

The dynamics of a system subjected to a potential equal to the sum of the Hénon--Heiles potential and that of hydrogen in an electric field was studied. The 4 Hamilton's equations of motion follow from the Hamiltonian and they were integrated numerically using the Runge-Kutta fourth order method. The Poincaré surface of a section fixed at x = 0 and px> 0 was used to reduce the phase space to a 2-dimensional plane. The analysis of the Poincaré surface, the Lyapunov exponent, and the autocorrelation shows that as the constant of motion, E, increases from 0.30 to 0.45, the dynamics …

Stable Isotope-Based Reconstruction Of Oligo-Miocene Paleoenvironment And Paleohydrology Of Central Anatolian Lake Basins (Turkey), Tina Lüdecke, Tamás Mikes, Fuat Bora Rojay, Michael A. Cosca, Andreas Mulch

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Isotope geochemistry of lacustrine carbonate represents a powerful tool to reconstruct paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental conditions. Here, we present a comprehensive set of long-term oxygen (delta^{18}O) and carbon (delta^{13}C) stable isotope records from 5 Chattian to Burdigalian lacustrine sequences distributed over the Central Anatolian Plateau. Field relationships combined with stable isotope geochemistry indicate a relatively humid subtropic Late Oligocene climate with an environment characterized by large, temporally open freshwater lakes. Approximately during the middle Aquitanian, a 4%o-5%o increase in lake delta^{18}O values indicates changes in regional climate including more arid conditions and an increasing dominance of closed saline lake conditions in …

Planar Waveguide With Left-Handed Material Guiding Film For Refractometry Applications, Taher M. El-Agez, Sofyan A. Taya, Mohamed M. Shabat, Hani M. Kullab

Turkish Journal of Physics

A symmetric 3-layer slab waveguide with a left-handed material as a guiding layer is examined analytically for cover refractive index detection. The TM mode dispersion relation of the proposed waveguide is investigated. The sensitivity of the proposed sensor to changes in the cover refractive index and the power flowing within each layer are presented. Some unusual features are found; for example, the sensitivity of the proposed sensor is negative. Moreover, the sensitivity improvement compared with the conventional 3-layer waveguide sensor is approximately a factor of 6.

Theoretical Modeling And Numerical Solutions Of Some Standard Thermoluminescence Detector Crystals, Erdem Uzun Jan 2013

Theoretical Modeling And Numerical Solutions Of Some Standard Thermoluminescence Detector Crystals, Erdem Uzun

Turkish Journal of Physics

MCP-100, MYS-N, MTS-7, MTS-100, and MCP-N standard thermoluminescence detector materials are annealed and irradiated. Glow curves and all trap parameters are determined. For these materials new theoretical energy band models are suggested and differential equations governing the charge carrier traffics are derived. The equations are solved by using computer-based numerical methods. During the simulations, experimental data measured in the previous step are given to computer code as the initial conditions. Experimental and numerical results show that the electron-band structures of standard thermoluminescence crystals are represented fairly well by the suggested models.

Synthesis And Optical Characterization Of Zn_{1-X}Mg_Xs: Eu Nanoparticles, Alexander Nwabueze Amah, Audu Onoja, Richard Akpagher

Turkish Journal of Physics

Zn_{1-x}Mg_xS: Eu^{3+} nanoparticles were synthesized by a facile co-precipitation technique with varying magnesium concentrations (0 =< x =< 0.20). X-ray diffraction results showed a mixture of cubic and hexagonal structures. There was an observed peak shift towards higher angles, decrease in peak intensities, disappearance of other peaks, and increase in diffraction peak broadening as Mg concentration increased. The estimated average particle sizes ranged from 2.0 nm to 8.79 nm. Scanning electron microscopy results showed smooth and uniform surface morphology. Energy dispersive X-ray studies indicated that the samples contained mainly Zn, S, and Eu because of the low detection limit for Mg. UV-Vis absorption spectrophotometer results showed a blue shift in energy due to quantum confinement as Mg concentration increased.

Analyses Of Elastically Scattered Charged Pions From Calcium Isotopes And The ^{48}Ca-^{54}Fe Isotone At 180 Mev, Zuhair Fayyad Mahmoud Shehadeh

Turkish Journal of Physics

The elastic scattering of 180 MeV positively and negatively charged pions, incident on a set of calcium isotopes and the isotone ^{48}Ca - ^{54}Fe, has been analyzed within the framework of a recently updated simple local optical potential. This potential, particularly at the tail region, has been originally determined from available phase shifts using inverse scattering theory and the Klein--Gordon equation as a guide. The analysis is carried out with and without considering the squared potential term in the Klein-Gordon equation. Coulomb effects are accounted for by implementing Stricker's prescription. The numerical results for the angular distributions with isotopic and …

Late Maastrichtian-Late Palaeocene Planktic Foraminiferal Biostratigraphy Of The Matrix Of The Bornova Flysch Zone Around Bornova (İzmir, Western Anatolia, Turkey), Bi̇lal Sari

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Bornova Flysch Zone (BFZ), located between the Menderes Massif and the İzmir-Ankara Suture in westernmost Anatolia (Turkey), forms the westernmost part of the Anatolide-Taurides. The BFZ comprises intensely sheared Upper Cretaceous-Palaeocene matrix and blocks of various origins. The matrix of the BFZ is mainly made up of unfossiliferous flysch-type sediments (alternations of sandstones and shales). In Bornova (İzmir, western Turkey) and its surroundings, these clastics locally include planktic foraminifera-bearing pelagic micritic limestone and calcareous shale lenses and interbeds (Beytitepe Limestone). As a result of studies focusing on the planktic foraminifera-bearing pelagic interlayers in three areas (Gökdere, Işıklar and Kocaçay …

Tectonosedimentary Development And Palaeoenvironmental Changes In The Acıgöl Shallow-Perennial Playa-Lake Basin, Sw Anatolia, Turkey, Cahi̇t Helvaci, Mehmet Ci̇hat Alçi̇çek, İbrahi̇m Gündoğan, Ünsal Gemi̇ci̇

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The late Cenozoic extensional deformation formed several NE-trending fluvio-lacustrine basins in SW Anatolia, filled by alluvial, fluvial and lacustrine deposits. Among them, the Acıgöl basin , is notable for its tectono-sedimentary development of a prominent shallow-perennial playa-lake setting. The basin initially subsided to receive coarse-clastic alluvial deposits, merging into fluvial systems and central shallow lakes. Subsequent basin deepening with significant sediment supply from surrounding basement horsts caused gradual shrinkage of the relatively small shallow lakes, due to renewed progradation of alluvial fans and they eventually dried out completely. The sedimentation pattern and palaeoenvironmental changes record a constant tectonic, sedimentation, climatic …

Revised Late Campanian-Danian Age Of The Melange-Related Turbiditic Sequence In The Mersin Area (Central Taurides, S. Turkey), Hayati̇ Koç, Kemal Tasli, Erol Özer

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

A planktonic foraminiferal assemblage obtained from the Yavca stratigraphic section north of Mersin shows that the age of a melange-related turbiditic sequence extends to the Danian (Early Palaeocene). Previously, this turbiditic sequence, termed the Yavca Formation, was considered to be of Late Cretaceous or Campanian-Maastrichtian age. The formation is either depositionally overlain by the Fındıkpınarı ophiolite-related melange or tectonically by Mersin Ophiolite slices or Jurassic-Cretaceous platform carbonates. Clayey limestone and mudstone samples collected from the type area of the Yavca Formation yielded planktonic foraminiferal assemblages, which include Parasubbotina pseudobulloides (Plummer), P. varianta (Subbotina), Praemurica pseudoinconstans (Blow), P. inconstans (Subbotina), Globanomalina …

Revisiting The Genesis Of Red Mediterranean Soils, Nicolas Fedoroff, Marie-Agnes Courty

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

This work, aside from being a classical discussion on the processes of rubefaction and illuviation, is an attempt to cross the abundant literature on red Mediterranean soils (RMSs) written by pedologists, and also by paleopedologists and geologists, with the climatic frame established by paleoclimatologists for the Quaternary. Such an approach leads us to consider that the development of the RMSs was discontinuous, occurring during periods of environmental stability, i.e. interglacials, characterized by a humid climate (precipitations exceeding evapotranspiration) with dry and hot summers. The impact of glacial intervals on the RMS covers is presently only partially documented. Aeolian processes during …

The Key Role Of Micromorphology In Studies Of The Genesis Of Clay Minerals And Their Associations In Soils And Its Relevance To Advances In The Philosophy Of Soil Science, Gordon Jock Churchman

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Micromorphological observations from 3 different published works have been studied to aid understanding of aggregation and of colloids, both unique to soils. Saprolites in Hong Kong included ‘veins’ of different thicknesses and colours. Optical mineralogy identified them as infill from the neogenesis of clays in rock fractures. The common thicker infills resulted from weathering. Dark infill contained comminuted primary minerals whereas thin pale infill originated hydrothermally. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the size, shape, and mineralogy of the kaolin minerals formed in infill depended on the types of cracks in the saprolites and on drying. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

This work aims to study recent climatic oscillations and their influence on sedimentation in the Ria de Vigo, a coastal embayment in Galicia, NW Spain. It is based on the study of clay mineral assemblages, in conjunction with other proxies (granulometric, geochemical, geochronological and microfaunal), in the core KSGX 24. A Benthic Foraminifera High Productivity (BFHP) proxy was used to determine changes in the flux of organic matter (OM) at the bottom of the study area. Total organic carbon (TOC) content is not a suitable proxy to estimate changes in the past supply of OM due to diagenetic processes. The …
