The Sevier River Basin is a water short basin wherein upstream diversions not consumptively used become the water right for downstream users. The diversion-return cycle occurs several times as the stream travels from its mountain source areas to the terminal lake at the lower end of the basin. This study dealt with the proposed implementation of conservation measures which would wawste less diverted water and allow for irrigation of additional acres. Four, four-stage, laboratory scale rotating biological contactor (RBC) units were employed to develop kinetic models for the RBC process when treating domestic wastewater. The study was conducted at three different temperatures of 5 degrees C, 15 degrees C, and 20 degrees C. Each unit operated at a different constant organic loading rate taht ranged from 4 qCOD/m^2/d to 14 gCOD/m^2/d and at a constand detention time of 2 hours. Carbonaceous substrate removals measured as COD cencentrations with the four-stage RBC's were 80, 85, and 90 percent for 5 degrees C, 15 degrees C, and 20 degrees C, respectively. The major …

Introduction: Scrubber wastes obtained in an affort to limit air pollution generated by coal-fired pwoer plants may contribute to another possible sources of pollution. To date, scrubber wastse have been in a liquid phase which causes disposal problems partially due to the liquid characteristics. The use of solid scrubber wastes and the land deposition of such wastes is proposed. The feasibility of solid scrubber wastes disposal in landfills is under question. The primary area of concern is the effect that water percolation through such wastes would have on groundwater quality parameters. The economic well-being of the semiarid intermountain area requires efficent use of available water supplies. Agriculture, the major water-consuming industry, depends on irrigation water. The adoption of sprinkler systems that increase on-farm irrigation "efficiencies" and the area which can be irrigated from upstream diversions may interfere with the "tenure" of downstream water rights. These downstream effects need to be evaluated before allowing farmers to use the water "saved" to irrigate additional acreages or crops to obtain greater profits. The problem in letting farms expand their irrigated acreage is that the individual farmer increases his profits through increased consumptive use. The …

Many towns of the arid west were built upon alluvial fans and upon sites underlain by Pleistocene lake deposits. The objective of this study was to assess the potential impact of these activities of man upon groundwater quality within these geological features. Emphasis was placed on shallow groundwater quality after it was determined that deep groundwater is rarely contaminated at such sites. A reconnaissance of Utah and Nevada was made and four sites underlain by alluvial fans (Willard, Manti, Elsinore, and Spring City) and four sites underlain by lake shore deposits (Hyde Park, Fielding, Providence and Richmond) were selected in …

A survey was made to appraise current man-made contamination of shallow groundwater in Utah. Very little has been published on the subject, and most of the information was obtained by personal observation and through interviews of individuals concerned with water quality protection in Utah. After presenting the relevant physiographic, geologic, and hydrologic characteristics of the various regions of Utah and discussing how these relate to groundwater contamination in general, representative groundwater quality hazards in 32 sites or regions in Utah are presented. A study of the gains or losses of the Sevier River and the Central Utah, McIntyre, and Leamington Canals in the Leamington area, in Juab and Millard Counties, Utah, was made to determine changes in those reaches. Three to seven sets of seepage measurements made during 1980 were used in the analysis. Adjustments for fluctuations in flow were made from information obtained from water-stage recorders operated at selected locations during the time of each seepage run.

The purpose of this report is to explain the windspeed increase on mountain slopes at night. Additional work is required to determine such things as the frequency of the winds, the area affected, seasonal variation, and the effect on fire behavior. Also, additional studies are needed to develop the type of procedures required to forecast these nocturnal mountain winds.

A major concern of forest land managers is the visual impact that activities such as timber harvest, road building, and mining have on the forest landscape. Management of the visual resource is a regular part of planning on National Forests, and many other public and private forest land managers are increasing their efforts to protect and enhance this resource. The Forest Residue and Harvesting Research Program at the Intermountain Station includes studies of the impact of harvest and roading activities on visual quality. This report describes a preliminary investigation of the effectiveness of two electromagnetic exploration methods as means of finding unmapped faults in the Paradox Basin environment. Results indicate that the Very Low Frequency (VLF method is useful. VLF profiles were measured across three known fault traces near Gibson Dome, San Juan County, Utah. Each fault or set of faults generated a significant anomaly. In some cases, the anomaly due to the fault was superimposed on a larger scale anomaly caused by the transition from unaltered rocks away from the fault to altered rocks in or on one side of the fault …

Biological sampling was carried out during 1976-78 in five streams in the southeastern Uinta Basin, Utah and Colorado, in order to provide baseline water-quality data for an area of potential oil-shale development. The biological activity in the streams sampled generally is limited by physical factors more so than by chemical constituents and plant nutrients. Characteristics of streamflow, such as high turbidity, fluctuating water levels, and moderate to high salinity, limit production of flora and fauna biomass.

Red Point quadrangle, in Emery County in central Utah, was mapped in 1979 as a part of the U.S. Geological Survey's progress to evaluate lands in the public domain for potential coal leasing. Mapping was done using U.S. Forest Service color aerial photographs at a scale of 1:15,640 and U.S. Geological Survey black-and-white aerial photographs at a scale of 1:30,000. The quadrangle was mapped previously by Spicker (1931) at a scale of 1:62,500.

North Horn Mountain is part of a deeply dissected plateau in central Utah which is characterized by deep, arrow, steep-walled canyons with local relief of more that 1,000 feet. Geologic units exposed in the North Hort Mountain area range in age from Late Cretaceous to Holocene and contain two mineable seams of Cretaceous coal. The area is in the drainage basin of the San Rafael River, in the Colorado River Basin. Runoff from the mountain is ephemeral. Surface-water quantity and quality were observed at 12 gaging stations downstream from mined and lease areas in the Wasatch Plateau, Book Cliffs, and Emery coal fields in central Utah. Measurements of base flow were made at 52 additional sites in the region. The report describes the hydrologic setting of this important coal region and summarizes the surface-water data collected at the monitoring sites from August 1978 through September 1979. Coal mining and lease activities in each of the monitored basins also are described.

We have measured the distribution of total energy in reaction products for the CO2 laser‐induced MPD: CF2CFCl→CF2+CFC1. From a separate study of MPD rates as a function of laser intensity and inert buffer gas pressure, reliable estimates of the radiative pumping rates are known for this reaction. These results, when analyzed together, allow us to extract a unimolecular A factor from the MPD data. The determined value A = 3×1016 sec−1 agrees well with estimates based on independent thermal data.

F region east-west drifts have been measured at Jicamarca for almost 10 years, using incoherent scatter. The drifts are westward during the day and eastward at night. The daytime drift velocities are about 50 m/s and change very little with season or solar cycle. The evening reversal occurs at about 1600 local time throughout the solar cycle. The maximum nighttime eastward drifts are about 105 and 130 m/s during solar minimum and maximum, respectively. The daytime and nighttime drifts show very litle variation with magnetic activity. These Jicamarca incoherent scatter results (especially the reversal times) differ appreciably from results obtained …

A severe rain storm on August 11 and 18, 1979, caused major flood damage in urban areas of east Ogden, Utah. At least 3.85 cm of rain fell in a 7 hour-period. The severity of damage was dramatically increased by water diverted from the Brigham-Ogden Canal, when it was clogged by a debris flow in the vicinity or Third, Taylor, and Polk Streets (Fig. 1). On the basis of fieldwork and drilling completed in the Fall of 1980, several zones of intertonguing between the Star Point Sandstone and the overlying Blackhawk Formation have been identified in the northern part of the Wasatch Plateau, Carbon County, Utah (sheet 1). As a result of this work, correlations of important coal beds have been revised. The U.S. Geological Survey drilled a total of 12 holes in the area, from the west side of Pleasant Valley, near Slaughterhouse Canyon, to the eastern part of the Beaver Creek drainage (sheet 1) (Blanchard and others, 1976; U.S. Geological Survey, 1980).
