Altered Volcanic Ash Partings In The C Coal Bed, Ferron Sandstone Member Of The Mancos Shale, Emery County, Utah, United States Geological Survey
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
When volcanic ash falls onto the surface of a peat-forming swamp and is then covered by peat, it forms a horlzontal parting that can be recognized in the subsequent coal bed. As a consequence of the acid leaching environment in the swamp, the original glassy component and some of the less resistant pyrogenic minerals in the ash alter to clay minerals, usually kaolinite.

Geochemical Results From A Rock Geochemical Survey In The Mount Belknap Caldera Vicinity, Utah, Robert E. Tucker, William R. Miller, J. N. Motooka, U.S. Geological Survey
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
Rock, stream-sediment, and hydrogeochemical surveys were conducted in the Mount Belknap caldera area, south-central Utah, during the summer of 1979. The presence of leucocratic rocks and relatively high concentrations of the elements Nb, Be, Ga, Y, Pb, Sn, Mo, and F with corresponding low concentrations of the elements Ba, Mg, Ca, Fe, Sr, and Cu suggests that late phase highly differentiated felsic magmas were intruded and (or) erupted in the caldera vicinity. The presence of Mo and Sn in the rocks and F in the water samples suggest that the ore elements were concentrated, first in residual fluids in the …

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
Coal in the Ferron Sandstone Member of the Mancos Shale of Cretaceous age has traditionally been mined by underground techniques in the Emery Coal Field in the southern end of Castle Valley in east-central Utah. However, approximately 99 million tons are recoverable by surface mining. Ground water in the Ferron is the sole source of supply for the town of Emery, but the aquifer is essentially untapped outside the Emery area. The Ferron Sandstone Member crops out along the eastern edge of Castle Valley and generally dips 2" to 10" to the northwest beneath the surface. Sandstones in the Ferron …

Summary Utah/Western Colo, 1992 System Study, United States Department Of Energy Western Area Power Administration
Summary Utah/Western Colo, 1992 System Study, United States Department Of Energy Western Area Power Administration
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
The Utah/western Colorado area of the Rocky Mountain Region has adequate coal and water resources to support additional thermal generation plants beyond those already in service. Also within the region are several sites suitable for large-sized hydroelectric pumped-storage projects for purposes of supplying peaking power. The close proximity of these types of electric generating facilities is desirable in providing offpeak energy during the pumping cycle for the pumped-storage units. Considering that the potential capacity of each type of generation is in the 500 to 1,000 (two units) MW range per site and would require major extra-high-voltage (EHV) transmission developments, it …

Reduction Of N-Protected Amino Acids To Amino Alcohols And Subsequent Re-Oxidation To Original N-Protected Amino Acids, Val S. Goodfellow
Reduction Of N-Protected Amino Acids To Amino Alcohols And Subsequent Re-Oxidation To Original N-Protected Amino Acids, Val S. Goodfellow
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
For the synthesis of certain molecules of interest in Dr. Richard Olsen's laboratory it was necessary to produce N-protected a-amino alcohols from N-protected amino acids and subsequently, after further synthesis steps, to oxidize the hydroxyl functionalities of these molecules back to carboxylic acids. A number of methods are known for the reduction of carboxylic acids to alcohols; several methods are also reported in the chemical literature for the oxidation of alcohols to carboxylic acids. The problem in finding a suitable general method, is that the amino acid side chains affect the re activity and chemistry differently in each specific case. …

Proton Transfers In Hydrogen‐Bonded Systems. Vi. Electronic Redistributions In (N2h7)+ And (O2h5)+, Steve Scheiner
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Electronic rearrangements accompanying transfer of the central proton between the two XHn units of (H3NHNH3)+ and (H2OHOH2)+ are studied using ab initio molecular orbital methods. Electron density difference maps are calculated by subtracting the density of the equilibrium structure (X–H‐‐‐X) from that of the midpoint geometry (X‐‐H‐‐X) using the split‐valence 4‐31G basis set. Some of the features revealed by the maps are common to both systems while others indicate significant differences between nitrogen and oxygen. Decomposition of the total electron density into …

Energy Siting In Utah: A Programming Model, Donald L. Snyder, John E. Keith, Terrence F. Glover, Gene L. Wooldridge
Reports
Using a conceptual model of a multiple-product firm, the necessary conditions for an optimal input and output allocation were determined for a region constrained by resource availabilities and/or policy constraints. A linear programming model was developed to deteremine the optimal allocation of water between agricultural and coal-fired electrical generating entities as well as the trade offs which could occur if electrical generation were increased. Other areas of potential trade offs such as coal source restrictions and air quality regualtions were also examined. Coal mining and transportation costs were included as were SO2, Nox, and particulate emission rates on a coal …
Calcium Carbonate Precipitation As Influenced By Stream Primary Production, Gretchen L. Rupp, V. Dean Adams
Calcium Carbonate Precipitation As Influenced By Stream Primary Production, Gretchen L. Rupp, V. Dean Adams
Reports
The potential influence of periphyton photosynthesis on calcium carbonate precipitation was studied for the Logan River, Bear River Mountains, northern Utah. The water chemistry, hydrology, and benthic primary production of the river were monitored for one year. periphyton photosynthesis and calcium carbonate precipitation were measured concurrently in laboratory experiments utilizing radioisotopic tracers. These experiments investigated the effects of water temperature, velocity, and macronutrient concentration on photosynthetically induced calcium carbonate precipitation. In these experiments, the biologic induction of calcium carbonate precipitation was not correlated with water nutrient level. It did, however, reflect water temperature, and was greatest at approximately 10 degrees …

A User's Manual For Computer Programs Used In: Model Choice: An Operational Comparison Of Stochastic Streamflow Models For Droughts, W. Robert James, David S. Bowles, Nath T. Kottegoda
Reports
The rapid development of stochastic or operational hydrology over the past 10 years has led to the need for some comparative analyses of the currently available long-term persistence models. Five annual stochastic streamflow generation models (autoregressive, autoregressive-moviing-average (ARMA), ARMA-Markov, fast fractional Gaussian noise, and broken line) are compared on their ability to preserved drought-related time series properties and annual statistics. Using Monto Carlo generation procedures and comparing the average generated statistics and drought or water supply properties, a basis is established to evaluated model performance on four different Utah study streams. A seasonal disaggregation model is applied to each of …

Update On Estimation Of Water Surface Elevation Probabilities For The Great Salt Lake, L. Douglas James, David S. Bowles, W. Robert James, Ronald V. Canfield
Reports
The techniques of operational hydrology, employing an autoregrssive moving average (ARMA (1,0) model were used to replicate historical patterns of streamflow into, precipitation on, and evaporation from the Great Salt Lake. The results were combined with a lake water balance model to simulate lake stage sequences beginning with known initial conditions and extending up to 125 years into the future and used to generate probability distributions for future lake stages. Starting with a spring 1980 high stage of 4200.45 ft msl, the best estimate is that the 1981 spring high will be 4200.19, but there is one change in four …

The Dependence On Zenith Angle Of The Strength Of 3-Meter Equatorial Electrojet Irregularities, H. M. Ierkic, Bela G. Fejer, D. T. Farley
Bela G. Fejer
Radar measurements in Peru were used to deduce the zenith angle dependence of the scattering cross section of plasma irregularities generated by instabilities in the equatorial electrojet. The irregularities probed by the 50 MHz Jicamarca radar had a wavelength of 3m. The cross section for the type 2 irregularities was isotropic in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field, while the cross section for the stronger type 1 irregularities varied with zenith angle at a rate of approximately 0.3 dB/degree; the horizontally traveling waves were more than 100 times stronger than those traveling vertically.
Iron And Life, Thomas Emery
Iron And Life, Thomas Emery
Faculty Honor Lectures
Iron, iron, everywhere but. . . . The plight of the ancient mariner surrounded by undrinkable water could hardly have been more frustrating than life on earth with respect to iron. Iron is the fourth most abundant element of the earth's surface, exceeded only by oxygen, silicon, and aluminum. Virtually all forms of life from the simplest bacteria to humans require iron to catalyze numerous and complex metabolic reactions. Because of the diversity and complexity of the role of iron in the life process, it has even been suggested that the origin of life on earth centered around the catalytic …
On The Existence Of Global Variational Principles, Ian M. Anderson, T. Duchamp
On The Existence Of Global Variational Principles, Ian M. Anderson, T. Duchamp
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
In studying physical phenomena one frequently encounters differential equations which arise from a variational principle, i.e. the equations are the Euler-Lagrangequations obtained from the fundamental (or action) integral of a problem in the calculus of variations. Because solutions to the Euler-Lagrange equations determine the possible extrema of the fundamental integral, the first step in the solution of a given problem in the calculus of variations is to obtain the appropriate Euler-Lagrange equations. This state of affairs suggests the so-called inverse problem, viz. does a given differential equation arise from a variational principle and, if so, what is the Lagrangian for …

Food size selection of the mosquitofish , Gambusia affinis affinis. was measured in aquaria using juvenile stages of the mosquito, Clllex tarsalb;, as prey. Fish size varied from recently born fry to large adult females. Food size selection was positively correlated with fish size. Mosquitofish fry (6-8 111m standard length) attacked and ate primarily first and second instar larvae. Fry attacked larger instars, but attack success on these was low (0 - 50%). Fish larger than 20 mm attached primarily pupae and third and fourth instar larva. No first instar mosquitoes were eaten. Attack success for these fish was above …

Three marking techniques were tested to determine their applicability for mosquitofish. Tetracycline drugs and DC Ar administered in the diet successfully marked laboratory-cultured mosquitofish, but exposure to direct sunlight in outdoor tanks resulted in the rapid disappearance of the marks. Preliminary data on fluorescent marks from a polystyrene pigment in a melamine-sulfonamide-formaldehyde resin forced into the dermal ,tissue with compressed air are more promising.
A t an optimal deliver pressure of 7.3 m Hg (140 p.s.i.) and spraying time of 15 sec., marking percentage is maximized and fish mortality is minimized. Mark retention time was up to 80 days in …

Seasonally averaged quiet-day F region ionospheric E × B drift observations from the Millstone Hill, St. Santin, Arecibo, and Jicamarca incoherent scatter radars are used to produce a model of the middle and low-latitude electric field for solar minimum conditions. A function similar to an electrostatic potential is fitted to the data to provide model values continuous in latitude, longitude, time of day, and day of the year. This model is intended to serve as a reference standard for applications requiring global knowledge of the mean electric field or requiring information at some location removed from the observing radars. Ute Self-Determination In Setting Tribal Resource Development Policy, Herbert H. Fullerton, Mac Mckee, Roger D. Hansen
Reports
The Ute Indian Tribe of northeastern Utah has large land holdings rich in water and energy resources. Revenues from these sources have created capital that can potentially be used by the Tribe to further develop its resources and expand its agricultural and business enterprises. Realities, however, complicate this simple scenario in that the Tribal goals are broader than pure economic gain and that increased incomes may mean sacrifices in terms of these other goals. The Tribe faces the problem of how best to develop its water resources in a way that best meets its multiplicity of needs.

Extensive experimental and theoretical research has been performed in the last decade to study ionospheric irregularities. These studies have shown that plasma instabilities play a major role in the generation of the irregularities. In this work we describe in detail the recent experimental studies of the E and F region irregularities and also the extensive work on plasma instability theories developed to explain them. We also describe both radio wave and spacecraft-borne experimental techniques to allow a common ground for the understanding of the data from ground-based and in situ experiments. To date, theoretical work has been mostly concentrated on …
