Slope Stability Analysis Of A Lake Michigan Coastal Bluff, Gregory Carlton Young Dec 2004

Slope Stability Analysis Of A Lake Michigan Coastal Bluff, Gregory Carlton Young

Masters Theses

Bluff failure along the Lake Michigan coast can be produced primarily by increased pore pressure from perched water tables above lacustrine clay deposits. To test this theory, a site in Allegan County, Michigan with alternating layers of sand, clay and glacial till was chosen for bluff failure monitoring. Historically, the site experiences sporadic massive failures as opposed to neighboring sites that show more regular and uniform displacements. Four pole and cable monitoring lines were measured bi-weekly from December 2001 to October 2003. Lake levels were low and no erosion of material at the base of the slope occurred. Slumps above …

The Glacial Geology Of Southern St. Joseph County, Michigan, Linda Nicks Dec 2004

The Glacial Geology Of Southern St. Joseph County, Michigan, Linda Nicks

Dissertations

The objective of the dissertation was to map the glacial geology in southern St. Joseph County, Michigan. The surficial geology was divided into three distinct land systems which are moraine, outwash and fan deposits. The Sturgis Moraine is the most prominent feature transecting the study area from east to west. The topography is further dissected by southwest-trending channels interpreted as tunnel channels.

Thick accumulations of sand and gravel in the study area indicate that glacial meltwater deposition played a dominant role in shaping the landscape. Based on the relative size of the channels and outwash deposits, the largest contribution from …

Phase Coherent Effects In The Speckle Correlation Of Light Scattered Fromvolume Disordered Media And Randomly Rough Surfaces, Bogdan Danila Dec 2004

Phase Coherent Effects In The Speckle Correlation Of Light Scattered Fromvolume Disordered Media And Randomly Rough Surfaces, Bogdan Danila

Dissertations

We present a study of the statistics of the intensity patterns produced when coherent light is scattered by random media (volume disorder) or randomly rough surfaces. Such a random, granular interference pattern is called speckle. Particular emphasis is on the statistical correlations arising between thefluctuations of the intensities corresponding to distinct scattering paths; which are quantified by the speckle correlation function. In the first part, we present results for the correlation function computed for volume-disordered media by means of numerical simulation. Our focus is on the sensitivity of the correlationfunction to statistical parameters characterizing the volume distribution of the refraction …

A Comparative Study Of Interrater Reliability Coefficients Obtained From Different Statistical Procedures Using Monte Carlo Simulation Techniques, Ebrima Nying Aug 2004

A Comparative Study Of Interrater Reliability Coefficients Obtained From Different Statistical Procedures Using Monte Carlo Simulation Techniques, Ebrima Nying

Dissertations

Reliability estimation is a key research component within the global area of educational assessment. The literature reports numerous studies using different statistical techniques for estimating reliability of educational measures. However, few have focused on the estimation of interrater reliability of performance assessment (Abedi, Baker, & Herl, 1995). Specifically, this study compared three different methods for estimating interrater reliability to determine if there are differences among these estimates as a function of: sample size, measurement scale, number of raters and the theoretical population reliability (rho). The three methods of estimation were the Intraclass Correlation (ICC(2, k )) (Shrout & Fleiss, 1979), …

Affine Equivariant Multivariate Rank-Based And Generalized Rank Regression, Majeda Salman Jun 2004

Affine Equivariant Multivariate Rank-Based And Generalized Rank Regression, Majeda Salman

Dissertations

Affine equivariant estimates for the regression coefficient matrix of the multivariate linear model are proposed. These estimates are based on a transformation and retransformation technique that uses Tyler's (1987) M -estimator of scatter. The proposed estimates are obtained by retransforming the componentwiserank-based estimate due to Davis and McKean (1993) and a componentwise generalized rank estimate. Asymptotic properties of the estimates are established under some regularity conditions. It is shown that both estimates have a multivariate normal limiting distribution. The influence function of the retransformed generalized rank estimate has a bounded influence in both factor and response spaces. It is shown …

Metal Ion Imprinted Polymers For Biomolecular Recognition, Len A. Harris Jun 2004

Metal Ion Imprinted Polymers For Biomolecular Recognition, Len A. Harris

Masters Theses

Protein recognition by HPLC, based on histidine residues, was achieved by incorporating a copper chelating ligand covalently bonded to a polystyrene/divinyl benzene substrate, into column packing. The metal ion was bonded to the substrate in two ways: randomly, where the copper was bound to the ligand after the substrate polymerization and imprinted, where the copper was bound to the ligand before the substrate polymerization. The effect of this templating was measured by protein separation parameters of the resulting HPLC chromatographs. The hypothesis of this thesis is the imprinted substrate will have a higher copper content, and with coppers affinity toward …

On Similarity Measures For Cluster Analysis, Ahrned Najeeb Khalaf Albatineh Jun 2004

On Similarity Measures For Cluster Analysis, Ahrned Najeeb Khalaf Albatineh

Dissertations

This study discusses the relationship between measures of similarity which quantify the agreement between two clusterings of the same set of data. This study identifies a family [Special characters omitted.] of similarity measures which are of a special form and attain a maximum value of 1 and becomes identical when corrected for chance agreement. In particular, this study proves that the similarity measures of Rand (R), Hubert (H), and Czekanowski (CZ) are identical when corrected for chance agreement. It also proves that the measures of McConnaughey (MC) and Kulczynski (K) are identical when corrected for chance agreement. Moreover, if the …

Inelastic X-Ray Scattering Studies In Lithium And Metal Ammonia Solutions, Ayman Hasan Said Jun 2004

Inelastic X-Ray Scattering Studies In Lithium And Metal Ammonia Solutions, Ayman Hasan Said

Dissertations

In this work, inelastic x-ray scattering was used to measure the ionic collective excitations of a metal-ammonia system and the atomic form factor of lithium in a single crystal. For lithium and sodium ammonia systems, the measurements were carried out for different metal concentrations (lithium-ammonia with 2 0 , 16, and 13 mole percent metal [MPM] at T'=240K and sodium-ammonia with 18, 14, and 10 MPM at T=222K). These data were analyzed to determine the acoustic collective excitation dispersion relation and the linewidth. Deviations from the Bohm-Staver model for electron-ion coupling are discussed for the low electronic densities. For the …

Resonant And Non-Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering Of Copper Phthalocyanine, Michelle Deleene Tuel-Benckendorf

Masters Theses

With the ever-changing demands of technology and the desire to use new materials to replace the old, researchers have the job to not only find alternative materials, but also understand their properties. There continues to be extensive research in the properties of organic semiconductors, for use in many microelectronic applications. There is very little known about the excitation properties of these materials. For my research, I have chosen to study the electronic excitations of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc), one specific organic semiconductor. To do this, we used resonant and non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to measure the evolution of excitations as a …

The Effects Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs) On Nerve Growth Factor (Ngf) In The Developing Frog, Xenopus Laevis, Cari Delong

Honors Theses

Polychlorinated biphenyls are ubiquitous, persistent environmental contaminants that cause a variety of adverse health effects wildlife and humans. PCBs are the major contaminant in the Kalamazoo River Superfund Site, in which the Environmental Institute is funded to study. Projects at the Environmental Institute are focused on developing molecular biotechnology tools that will improve environmental risk assessment. Previous acute studies involved the exposure of developing tadpoles, Xenopus laevis to PCBs through aquarium water in order to measure gene expression. Nerve growth factor (NGF) gene expression showed changes in these previous studies. NGF is a neurotrophic factor that regulates the growth and …

Chemical And Isotopic Investigation Of Groundwater In Eastern United Arab Emirates (Uae), Ahmed Ali Abdalla Murad Apr 2004

Chemical And Isotopic Investigation Of Groundwater In Eastern United Arab Emirates (Uae), Ahmed Ali Abdalla Murad

Dissertations

UAE is located at the southeast of Arabian Peninsula. Two main aquifers occupy the study area: the Eastern Gravel Plain and Ophiolite aquifer. Increasing salinity of groundwater and depletion of aquifers are a major concern in the UAE. Previous studies suggest that groundwater, particularly in the Eastern Gravel Plain aquifer, is affected by seawater intrusion and evaporation. Isotopes of oxygen, hydrogen, carbon and chlorine, and chemical analyses were used to investigate this problem in detail. Samples of groundwater from the Eastern Gravel Plain aquifer have R36Cl values in the range of 13.3 to 17.4 x10-15 while those …

Studies Of Atomic And Molecular Dynamics Using Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Sophie E. Canton

Dissertations

Photoexcitation and photoionization studies of free atoms and molecules in the gas phase provide a unique view into various aspects of radiation-matter interactions that are used as basic building blocks in many branches of physics, such as Solid State, Plasma Physics, Photochemistry or Astrophysics. With the advent of third generation synchrotron light sources delivering high photon flux (>1015 photons/s) with unprecedented resolving power over a broad energy range, it has become possible to investigate in great detail not only the internal structure of the targets, but also the dynamics of the process. Born in the 1960s,photoelectron spectroscopy specifically …

Determination Of Spatial Strata For Environmental Regulatory Purposes, John Edward Daniels Dec 2003

Determination Of Spatial Strata For Environmental Regulatory Purposes, John Edward Daniels

Dissertations

This dissertation introduces spatial strata modelling, a methodology that combines spatial statistics, cluster analysis, and geographic information system theories to analyze the background level of naturally occurring contaminants of concern (COCs). The objective of spatial strata modelling is to divide a geographic area of interest into mutually exclusive geographic zones (spatial strata): with each stratum representing a different level of COC concentration. An estimate of each stratum's COC concentration level, representing an upper regulatory limit, will also be provided. Data provided by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality describing the spatial location and arsenic concentrations of 211 Michigan sites (arsenic …

Geochemical And Isotopic Characterization Of Shallow Basinal Brines From The Makgadikgadi Pans Complex, Northeastern Botswana: Determination Of The Sources Of Salinity, Loago N. Molwalefhe Dec 2003

Geochemical And Isotopic Characterization Of Shallow Basinal Brines From The Makgadikgadi Pans Complex, Northeastern Botswana: Determination Of The Sources Of Salinity, Loago N. Molwalefhe

Dissertations

Isotopes and chemical tracers have been used to constrain the sources and causes of salinity in shallow groundwater brine from the Makgadikgadi Basin, northeastern Botswana. The brine is massively rich in chloride and sodium, and moderately rich in carbonates, sulphate and potassium, and is distinctively poor in divalent cationic species. Various models that have been advanced to explain the origin of the brines include evaporative enrichment at the surface and density-induced infiltration, dissolution of evaporites, and trapped connate water.

This study presents the compositional variability and behaviors of ·the stable isotopes of carbon (S13C) and oxygen (S18 …

A Comparative Study Of Photomultiplier Tubes And Charge Coupled Devices In Glow Discharge-Optical Emission Spectrometry, Robert James Broadwater Dec 2003

A Comparative Study Of Photomultiplier Tubes And Charge Coupled Devices In Glow Discharge-Optical Emission Spectrometry, Robert James Broadwater

Masters Theses

This Masters Thesis compared two glow discharge-optical emission spectrometers designed around two different types of detectors: the photomultiplier tube (PMT) and the charge-coupled device (CCD). The two instruments compared were the LECO SA2000 (PMT-based) and the LECO GDS500a (CCD-based). Detection limit, dynamic range, precision, accuracy, and drift were determined to compare the detection systems between 165 and 450nm.

The PMT-based system outperformed the CCD-based system in all five of the categories studied based on the initial protocol. However, it was shown that improvements could be made in four of the five categories studied by exploiting the CCDs ability to monitor …

Laboratory Testing Of Select Geotextiles As Biointrusion Barriers And Sediment Filters, David R. Beck Dec 2003

Laboratory Testing Of Select Geotextiles As Biointrusion Barriers And Sediment Filters, David R. Beck

Masters Theses

It has been proposed that placing a geotextile over sediments with adsorbed contaminants can prevent bioaccumulation of the contaminants in larger animals by isolating the benthic organisms living within these sediments from fish. In conjunction with a field study carried out at Gull Creek, a laboratory study testing two geotextiles as biointrusion barriers and sediment filters was conducted.

Constant-head permeameters were run for seven days using cores from the field study area with a geotextile placed over the cores. For biointrusion barrier tests, medium sand was placed over the geotextile and spiked with nutrients. Following each trial, benthic organisms in …

Geophysical Characterization Of A Former Refinery Site, Kalamazoo, Michigan, Baraka Damas Kinabo Dec 2003

Geophysical Characterization Of A Former Refinery Site, Kalamazoo, Michigan, Baraka Damas Kinabo

Masters Theses

Lakeside, a former refinery site, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, is contaminated with hydrocarbon products. The contamination resulted from the refining and storage activities that took place at the site for over 50 years. The contamination is scattered in isolated pockets.

In an attempt to better define the contamination zones and therefore assist the remediation efforts, this study uses shallow geophysical methods including Electromagnetic induction using the EM 31 system, Magnetic, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), and Resistivity methods. The hand auger was used to further characterize some EM 31 anomalies. The EM 31 conductivity results show elevated values resulting from the biodegradation …

Capillary Electrophoretic Separations Of Metal Ions, Elena Hofman Dec 2003

Capillary Electrophoretic Separations Of Metal Ions, Elena Hofman

Masters Theses

Transition-metal (Zn(II), Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II)) ion separation was studied using 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid and 2-methyl-8-hydroxyquinoline ligands with surfactants (cationic and anionic) by capillary electrophoresis under a variety of conditions (like pH, ionic strength, voltage and ion, ligand and surfactant amounts) and has debuted a clear separation mechanism. With cationic surfactants, ligands compete with capillary surface silanols for the metal ions; with anionic surfactants, ligands, silanols and micelles compete.

An empirical parameter, Ke, (electrophoretic-mobilities based) rationalizing the separation was proposed, experimentally analyzed and supported; it provides a silanol group per cm2 value of the capillary surface, an equilibrium …

A Robust Two-Sample Procedure To Estimate A Shift Parameter, Feridun Tasdan Dec 2003

A Robust Two-Sample Procedure To Estimate A Shift Parameter, Feridun Tasdan

Dissertations

This study estimates the location shift parameter in the two-sample problem. The classical method, Least Square(LS), obtains the shift parameter estimate under the normality assumption. A departure from normality assumption makes the estimate inefficient and unreliable. One alternative to the least square estimate is Hodges-Lehmann (HL) estimate which uses Wilcoxon ranks to estimate the shift parameter. This estimate is robust against contaminations and large outliers. The proposed method in this study combines two samples and uses convolution technique to find a density function for the combined sample. This new density function is later used in the construction of the log …

Electrical Conductivity Measurements Of Lithium-Ammonia Solutions, Mariana Constantin Barbu Aug 2003

Electrical Conductivity Measurements Of Lithium-Ammonia Solutions, Mariana Constantin Barbu

Masters Theses

The topic covered in this thesis is the study of electronic interactions for liquid metal-ammonia solutions, lithium-ammonia solutions in particular. To obtain a theoretical understanding of so-called correlated electron systems.

The work focuses on sample creation and measurement of electrical conductivity of lithium-ammonia solutions varying with temperature for different concentrations. We have taken measurements in liquid lithium-ammonia mixtures using four-wire method to minimize the contact resistance. We have shown how it is possible to carry out accurate measurements of the electrical conductivity in these systems with the four wire measurements.

Application Of Geochemical Fingerprinting And Isotopes To Identity Landfill Gas Impacts To Groundwater, Eric E. Wallis Aug 2003

Application Of Geochemical Fingerprinting And Isotopes To Identity Landfill Gas Impacts To Groundwater, Eric E. Wallis

Masters Theses

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are detected in two groundwater monitoring wells (MW-60 and MW-62S) located along the northern, downgradient property line of the McGill Road Landfill (MRL) in Jackson, Michigan. Potential on-site sources for groundwater impact are two distinct landfill units at the MRL. Leachate chemistry suggested that landfill leachate was not the source of VOCs detected in groundwater. A potential source for VOCs was landfill gas. Sources of landfill gas in the vicinity of the impacted wells included the distinct MRL landfill units as well as the old Jackson County Landfill (JCL), located hydraulically downgradient from the impacted wells. …

Spearman Rank Regression, Jason C. Parcon Aug 2003

Spearman Rank Regression, Jason C. Parcon

Dissertations

The main purpose of this dissertation is to obtain an estimate of the slope parameter in a regression model that is robust to outlying values in both the x - and Y-spaces. The least squares method, though known to be optimal for normal errors, can yield estimates with infinitely large MSE's if the error distribution is thick-tailed. Regular rank-based methods like the Wilcoxon method are known to be robust to outlying values in the Y -space, but it is still grossly affected by outlying values in x -space.

This dissertation derives an estimate of the slope from an estimating …
