Supporting Spatial Reasoning: Identifying Aspects Of Length, Area, And Volume In Textbook Definitions, Eryn M. Stehr Maher, Jia He
Department of Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications
Length, area, and volume share structural similarities enabling flexibility in reasoning for real-world applications. Deep understanding of structures can help teachers connect these concepts to support their students’ mathematical reasoning and practices involving real-world situations. In mathematics textbooks designed for future teachers, definitions of length, area, and volume vary from procedural (e.g., use a ruler to measure side lengths, use formulas to calculate measures) to conceptual (e.g., construct appropriate n-dimensional units that tessellate the n-dimensional space) to formal (e.g., construct a function mapping qualitative size to a quantity of appropriate units). Most textbooks describe length, area, and volume …
Understanding The Pressure-Sinkage Relationship For Simulated Lunar Regolith And Implications On Bearing Capacity And Trafficability, Catherine A. Millwater
Understanding The Pressure-Sinkage Relationship For Simulated Lunar Regolith And Implications On Bearing Capacity And Trafficability, Catherine A. Millwater
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The intent of this thesis is to explore the pressure-sinkage relationship for simulated lunar regolith (simulant). The simulants used in this experiment emulate the lunar highlands (LHS-1) and the lunar mare (LMS-1). The ultimate ability of a terrain or regolith to support a load without shear failure is vital to the planning and construction of permanent infrastructure. This relationship can be measured by applying a normal load to the regolith until shear failure, from which allowable and ultimate bearing capacity can be deduced. An understanding of the pressure-sinkage of lighter loads on the higher ‘fluffy' layer of regolith is of …

A Study Of Attention-Free And Attentional Methods For Lidar And 4d Radar Object Detection In Self-Driving Applications, King Wah Gabriel Chan
Computer Science Honors Papers
In this thesis, we re-examine the problem of 3D object detection in the context of self driving cars with the first publicly released View of Delft (VoD) dataset [1] containing 4D radar sensor data. 4D radar is a novel sensor that provides velocity and Radar Cross Section (RCS) information in addition to position for its point cloud. State of the art architectures such as 3DETR [2] and IASSD [3] were used as a baseline. Several attention-free methods, like point cloud concatenation, feature propagation and feature fusion with MLP, as well as attentional methods utilizing cross attention, were tested to determine …
A Computational Analysis Of Hybrid Genome Assembly Strategies, Joseph Walewski
A Computational Analysis Of Hybrid Genome Assembly Strategies, Joseph Walewski
Computer Science Honors Papers
The central dogma of molecular biology states that DNA is transcribed to RNA and then translated into proteins. Since DNA is the starting material for many of biology’s macromolecules, it has been referred to as “nature’s instruction book.” The sum of all DNA in a cell is referred to as the genome, and genome sequencing is how we interpret the DNA.
Due to limitations on currently available technology, it is not possible to retrieve the entire genome in one contiguous set of data. Therefore, genome sequencing is a computer science problem as sequencing “reads” must be stitched together to obtain …
Efficient High Order Ensemble For Fluid Flow, John Carter
Efficient High Order Ensemble For Fluid Flow, John Carter
Doctoral Dissertations
"This thesis proposes efficient ensemble-based algorithms for solving the full and reduced Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations. The proposed ensemble methods require solving only one linear system with multiple right-hand sides for different realizations, reducing computational cost and simulation time. Four algorithms utilize a Generalized Positive Auxiliary Variable (GPAV) approach and are demonstrated to be second-order accurate and unconditionally stable with respect to the system energy through comprehensive stability analyses and error tests. Two algorithms make use of Artificial Compressibility (AC) to update pressure and a solenoidal constraint for the magnetic field. Numerical simulations are provided to illustrate theoretical results and demonstrate …

Honors Theses
The goal of this project is to find reliable parameter settings for a multi-dimensional global optimizer to optimize the performance of a large acceptance ion optical system for the requirements of nuclear physics experiments. We develop and test the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), a global optimization algorithm designed for continuous multi-dimensional problems, on a large acceptance particle beam separator, the High Rigidity Spectrometer (HRS) at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), which is a laboratory specializing in the production and experimental study of short-lived nuclear matter. We split the HRS into two sections, the High-Transmission Beamline (HTBL) and the …
Selective Melt Recrystallization Of Acetaminophen Polymorphs Through Environmental Control, Eleanor Lowe
Selective Melt Recrystallization Of Acetaminophen Polymorphs Through Environmental Control, Eleanor Lowe
Honors Theses
Polymorphism is the ability for a molecule to crystallize into multiple different structures in the solid state. The preparation of one polymorph over another is practically important to pharmaceutical development, as properties of polymorphs can vary and impact the drug delivery method. Polymorph outcomes depend heavily on the environment in which the crystal is nucleated, or initially formed. Acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol, is one example of a polymorphic compound. Here we use acetaminophen as a model system to better understand primary factors controlling polymorph selection and interconversion. We hypothesize a specific atmospheric environmental factor plays large role in …
Graphs, Adjacency Matrices, And Corresponding Functions, Yang Hong
Graphs, Adjacency Matrices, And Corresponding Functions, Yang Hong
Honors Theses
Stable polynomials, in the context of this research, are two-variable polynomials like $p(z_1,z_2) = 2 - z_1 - z_2$ that are guaranteed to be non-zero if both input variables have an absolute value less than one in the complex plane. Stable polynomials are used in a variety of mathematical fields, thus finding ways to construct stable polynomials is valuable. An important property of these polynomials is whether they have boundary zeros, which are points in the complex plane where the polynomial equals zero and both variables have an absolute value of 1. Overall, it is challenging to find stable polynomials …
The Influence Of Parental Behavior On Emerging Adult Egocentrism, Lilly E. Rogers, Nicole Buttrey, Monica Bennett, Olivia Harris
The Influence Of Parental Behavior On Emerging Adult Egocentrism, Lilly E. Rogers, Nicole Buttrey, Monica Bennett, Olivia Harris
Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
Existing research indicates that adolescent egocentrism, people of adolescent age being overly interested in oneself, is influenced by numerous factors, including identity development and parental behavior (Scarfo, 1993). Though it has been shown that this link between perceived parental behavior and adolescent egocentrism exists (Adams & Jones, 1982), research has not yet examined this relationship in emerging adults. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to explore the relationship between parental behavior/support and egocentrism in emerging adults, while controlling for personality. Emerging adult college students (N = 46), completed a Qualtrics survey that measured imaginary audience (a component of …

Educational Attainment, Sex, And Socioeconomic Status In The Context Of Aging, Gwendolyn Butler, Kya Cousino, Krista Semones, Benjamin Ramer
Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
Education is a known protective factor for normal aging. People who are able to pursue higher education are less likely to experience abnormal cognitive decline as they age (Lövdén et al., 2020). Socioeconomic status (SES) may also have an impact on sustained brain function. Greater wealth leads to greater opportunities for cognitive, social, and physical growth and maintenance (Steptoe and Zaninotto, 2020). Sex is another factor impacting SES and education. Females tend to have lower levels of education due to many sociocultural factors, including geographical location as well as family expectations (Hendrick et al., 2016). Therefore, we hypothesized that higher …
Green And Non-Green Extraction Of Eugenol From Cloves Using Steam Distillation, Bek Yuldashbaev
Green And Non-Green Extraction Of Eugenol From Cloves Using Steam Distillation, Bek Yuldashbaev
Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
Eugenol is commonly found in many plants such as cloves. It is one of the most used natural anesthetics in dentistry. Indonesia is one of the places indigenous to clove trees. Its people take advantage of the pain numbing properties in cloves to aid their tooth pain. The extraction of eugenol itself can be performed through steam distillation. With the process of distillation, the steam carries the oils extracted from the clove buds and recondenses into a cloudy distillate containing polar and non-polar molecules. To separate the eugenol from the distillate, green and non-green solvents were used. The green solvent …
Relationship Between Tree Canopy Cover, Impervious Surfaces, & Bird Biodiversity In Urban Parks In Nashville, Tennessee, Colin Swanson, Darlene Panvini, Lydia Mitchell
Relationship Between Tree Canopy Cover, Impervious Surfaces, & Bird Biodiversity In Urban Parks In Nashville, Tennessee, Colin Swanson, Darlene Panvini, Lydia Mitchell
Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
Bird diversity is an indicator of the overall biodiversity in urban green spaces. Identifying factors associated with urban green spaces that strongly influence bird biodiversity can inform the development and management of urban green spaces. Parks with larger areas of impervious surfaces were predicted to have lower bird diversity than those with more tree canopy coverage. This study used iTree Canopy to determine the percentage of tree canopy and impermeable surfaces for four different areas of urban parks in Nashville, Tennessee. Two parks were closer to the urban core and two were farther away. Tree canopy and impermeable surface cover …

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
Easy accessibility to social media content equates to increased access to emotional-charged materials. Research investigating the consequences of such emotional exposures on day-to-day lives is growing, with previous works showing high correlations between social media use and emotional modulations of the user. (Christensen, 2018; Mugg, 2005). Tiktok is a popular media platform and is a common tactic to present users with highly emotional content to maintain engagement. (Kin, 2017). A question arises as to the emotional induction rates and effects of such streaming content, as previous work demonstrates that emotion induction is highly associated with physiological arousal (Siedlecka, 2018) and …
Bordetella Pertussis Cloning And Conjugation, Alec Mcmahon, Elizabeth Schoenfeld Dr
Bordetella Pertussis Cloning And Conjugation, Alec Mcmahon, Elizabeth Schoenfeld Dr
Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
The pathogenic microbe, Bordetella pertussis, is most recognizable for causing the disease commonly known as whooping cough. A whole-cell vaccine for B. pertussis was first developed in 1914 and it later became one part of the DTP combined vaccine in 1948. Since the development of these vaccines, B. pertussis has lost its prominence in research labs and remained understudied as a result. This research was performed to continue identifying gene 00815, one of many ambiguous genes in B. pertussis. Genetic comparisons with other related bacterial genes have identified this gene to be involved in the production of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) …
Tennessee Brewconomy: Navigating The Wholesale Beer Tax Landscape, Lauren E. Dansbury
Tennessee Brewconomy: Navigating The Wholesale Beer Tax Landscape, Lauren E. Dansbury
Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
In 2013, Tennessee transitioned from a price-based wholesale tax model to a per barrelage assessment. This research delves into the repercussions of this tax reform, assessing its impact on the brewing and wholesale distribution sectors. Despite the shift, Tennessee maintains the nation's highest wholesale beer tax for 16 consecutive years. The study examines the opportunity costs associated with this elevated tax, exploring alternative uses for the funds. Utilizing data on annual revenue collected by wholesalers from 2019 to 2022, segmented by city and county, the research provides actionable insights advocating for a reduction in the wholesale tax. The argument posits …

Hunting has been crucial in early human evolution. Some San (Bushmen) of southern Africa still practice their indigenous hunting. The use of poisons is one remarkable aspect of their bow-and-arrow hunting but the sources, taxonomic identifications of species used, and recipes, are not well documented. This study reports on fieldwork to investigate recent indigenous hunting practices of G/ui and G//ana San communities in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR), Botswana. Here we discuss their use of spider poison. The hunters use the contents of the opisthosoma (‘abdomen’) of a spider as sole ingredient of the arrow poison and discard the …
A Reference Framework For Variability Management Of Software Product Lines, Saiqa Aleem, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Faheem Ahmed
A Reference Framework For Variability Management Of Software Product Lines, Saiqa Aleem, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Faheem Ahmed
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
Variability management (VM) in software product line engineering (SPLE) is introduced as an abstraction that enables the reuse and customization of assets. VM is a complex task involving the identification, representation, and instantiation of variability for specific products, as well as the evolution of variability itself. This work presents a comparison and contrast between existing VM approaches using “qualitative meta-synthesis” to determine the underlying perspectives, metaphors, and concepts of existing methods. A common frame of reference for the VM was proposed as the result of this analysis. Putting metaphors in the context of the dimensions in which variability occurs and …

Surface Modification Of Carbon-Based Electrodes For Electrochemical Conversion Processes: Oxygen Reduction Reaction And Bicarbonate Conversion, Udari Shyamika Kodithuwakku Arachchige
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and conversion of bicarbonate into value-added chemicals are two significant electrochemical processes for energy storage and conversion. ORR is an important electrochemical reaction in fuel cells and metal-air batteries that provide power conversion and storage capacity, respectively, for portable electronics, and electric vehicles. However, the performance of catalysts (e.g., platinum-based) is critically limited by slow kinetics, inefficient four-electron pathway, and surface deactivation. This limited performance of platinum-based catalysts, the scarcity of platinum, and vulnerable supply chains for critical minerals require the development of alternative electrocatalysts now more than ever. Carbon-based materials possess several key properties that …

The fierce competition and rapidly growing eCommerce market are painful headaches for logistics companies. In 2021, Canada Post’s parcel volume peaked at 361 million units with a minimum charge of $10 per each. The Last-Mile Delivery (LMD) is the final leg of the supply chain that ends with the package at the customer’s doorstep. LMD involves moving small shipments to geographically dispersed locations with high expectations on service levels and precise time windows. Therefore, it is the most complex and costly logistics process, accounting for more than 50% of the overall supply chain cost. Innovations like Crowdshipping, such as Uber …
Practical Secure Aggregation In Federated Learning Using Additive Secret Sharing, Hamid Fazli Khojir
Practical Secure Aggregation In Federated Learning Using Additive Secret Sharing, Hamid Fazli Khojir
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Federated learning is a machine learning technique where multiple clients with local data collaborate in training a machine learning model. In FedAvg, the main federated learning algorithm, clients train machine learning models locally and share the trained model with the server. While the sensitive data will never be sent to the server, a malicious server can construct the original training data by having access to the clients’ models in each training round. Secure aggregation techniques such as cryptography, trusted execution environment, or differential privacy are used to solve this problem. However, these techniques incur computation and communication overhead or affect …

What happens when climate change extinguishes entire nations? Neither international nor environmental law has provided a satisfactory answer to this weighty question. Climate change-induced flooding, storm surge, and sea level rise threaten the territorial integrity and habitability of several small island developing states, raising the specter of statelessness. We know that climate catastrophe is coming, but we have failed to take the necessary steps to safeguard several developing nations. This Article argues that innovative legal and policy solutions are needed today to prevent nation extinction tomorrow. I focus on two potential international governance solutions: the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate …
Defining The "Quadruple-A" Player: What Makes A Baseball Player Succeed In The Minor Leagues And Fail In The Major Leagues?, Sam Bogen
