Paleomagnetic Evidence For Northward Transport Of The Methow-Pasayten Belt, Julian L. (Julian Linus) Granirer

High level demagnetization isolates a single syntectonic magnetization in ten stable sites from the upper Cretaceous Winthrop and Midnight Peak Formations in the Methow-Pasayten belt of north central Washington. The mean direction of D=11.4°, 1=62.6°, Alpha95=4.7° is discordant with the expected in-situ direction. This discordance is interpreted as resulting from 1,370 km of northward transport between 93 and 45 Ma. Correcting the contemporaneous Mount Stuart direction from within the Cascade terrane for approximately 16° of southward tilt brings it into accord with the new Methow direction. Further, if northward translation of these terranes were initiated by a southward …

Glacial Geology Of The Tonasket – Spectacle Lake Area, Okanogan County, Washington, Keith A. (Keith Allen) Pine

Glacial sediments exposed in the northern Okanogan trough consist of Fraser advance stratified drift, lodgement till, and recessional stratified drift. No older Quaternary sediments were recognized in the mapped area.

The advance stratified drift unit is composed of upward-coarsening braided-stream outwash with locally intercalated lacustrine and alluvial fan sediments. An upsection change in facies within the unit suggests a gradation from distal to proximal deposition of proglacial outwash with time in Spectacle Lake Coulee. The gradation probably records the approach of Cordilleran ice into the area during the Fraser advance.

Net Shore-Drift Along The Pacific Coast Of Clallam And Jefferson Counties, Washington, James Mahala

Geomorphic and sedimentologic indicators of shore drift were used to delineate the boundaries of drift unit cells and their direction of net shore-drift along the 110 km of Pacific coastline of Clallam and Jefferson Counties, Washington. These indicators include changes in bluff morphology, sediment size gradation, beach width and slope, direction of spit progradation and stream mouth diversion, deposition and/or erosion at drift obstructions, identifiable sediment, and nearshore bar orientation. Drift determinations were based on a field oriented approach emphasizing such long-term indicators, supplemented by aerial photography, and literature relevant to the coast.

An Investigation Of Fluid Inclusions And Geochemistry Of Ore Formation In The Cedar Creek Breccia Pipe, North Santiam Mining District, Oregon, Mark B. Winters

The Cedar Creek breccia pipe is located in the North Santiam Mining District, Oregon, approximately 50 km. east of Salem. It was emplaced in the Sardine Formation, a series of andesitic flows, breccias, tuffs, and small intrusives of Middle to Late Miocene age.

The breccia pipe was discovered by Amoco Minerals Co. through soil sampling, a ground magnetic survey, and drilling. It is elliptical in plan view with maximum axes of approximately 110 and 145 m. and extends vertically downward over 350 m. The contacts between the pipe and the surrounding country rock are sharp and characterized by sheeted fault …

Sedimentary Petrology, Depositional Environment, And Tectonic Implications Of The Upper Eocene Quimper Sandstone And Marrowstone Shale, Northeastern Olympic Peninsula, Washington, William E. (William Ernst) Rauch

The Upper Eocene (Refugian) Quimper Sandstone and overlying Marrowstone Shale document approximately 300 meters of sediment deposited in a tectonically active, shallow marine area during a transgression. The Quimper Sandstone and Marrowstone Shale can be roughly divided into three facies, representing deposition from outer shore face and inner shelf to offshore or outer shelf.

Petrographic analysis of the Quimper Sandstone and Marrowstone Shale indicates geography and hydrodynamic conditions were responsible for a slight petrologic trend in composition such as more feldspar and lithic grains in the lower energy facies. Sedimentology, Sedimentary Petrology, And Tectonic Setting Of The Lower Miocene Clallam Formation, Northern Olympic Peninsula, Washington, Kurt Soe Anderson

The Lower Miocene Clallam Formation, located on the northern coast of the Olympic Peninsula, Washington, is an approximately 800 m thick sequence of sandstone and conglomerate that was deposited in the predominantly marine portion of a prograding delta.

As a whole, the Clallam Formation coarsens and shallows upward, progressing from fossiliferous sandstones deposited below wave base, through storm-dominated deposits characterized by climbing ripples, graded rythmites, and hummocky cross-stratification, to coarse-grained distributary mouth deposits. Within this general progression are several small-scale coarsening- and shallowing-upward cycles that reflect the occupation and subsequent abandonment of distributary channels.

The Great Excelsior Mine is located in the North Cascades of northwest Washington, approximately 6 miles (10 km) east of the town of Glacier. The deposit consists of Ag with subordinate Au and is hosted within felsic volcanic breccias, tuffaceous siltstones and graywackes, and felsic tuffs belonging to the Middle Jurassic Wells Creek Volcanics. The deposit is located approximately 1000 feet (305 m) below the contact between the Wells Creek Volcanics and the overlying Nooksack Group metasediments. Both units comprise the lowermost structural-metamorphic unit of the western North Cascades System.

Spectral properties of the equation l (f ) - λrf = 0 with an indefinite weight func­tion r are studied in LI2rl . The main tool is the theory of definitizable operators in Krein spaces. Under special assumptions on the weight function, for the operator associated with the problem, the regularity of the critical point infinity is proved. Some relations to full- and half-range expansions are indicated.

History And Origin Of Debris Torrents In The Smith Creek Drainage, Whatcom County, Washington, Tim L. Syverson

Four debris torrent events have occurred in the Smith Creek drainage since the turn of the century. In 1917, 1949, 1971, and 1983, debris torrents transported large quantities of logs out of the basin onto the delta. Inventories of air photographs of the drainage before and after the three most recent events, combined with field observations after the 1983 event, show that debris torrents in the Smith Creek drainage are closely related to mass movements. Mass movements provide the momentum necessary to mobilize debris in stream channels during periods of heavy run-off, resulting in the formation of debris torrents. Debris …

The Sedimentary Petrography, Depositional Environment And Tectonic Setting Of The Aldwell Formation, Northern Olympic Peninsula, Washington, Keith Marcott

The upper Eocene Aldwell Formation crops out in an east-west trending band across the northern Olympic Peninsula, Washington. Petrographic analyses indicate that the Aldwell Formation has lithologically distinctive eastern and western portions. The rocks of the eastern Aldwell are basalt-rich lithic greywackes; their mean compositions are Qm-F-Lt: 5- 22-73 and polycrystalline quartz-volcanic rock fragments-total sedimentary rock fragments: 1-78-21. The rocks of the western Aldwell are chert-rich lithic arenites; their mean compositions are Qm-F-Lt: 27-19-54 and polycrystalline quartz-volcanic rock fragments-total sedimentary rock fragments: 66-11-23.

The Geology And Structure Of The Canyon Creek-Church Mountain Area, North Cascades, Washington, Jeffrey T. (Jeffrey Thomas) Jones

Four major rock assemblages ranging from Precambrian to Lower Cretaceous occur in the Canyon Creek/Church Mountain area of northwestern Washington. Lithologic, structural, and fossil evidence were used to discriminate among the assemblages and to correlate them with the Chilliwack Group, the Nooksack Group, the Yellow Aster Complex, and a unit previously included in the Chilliwack Group, referred to here as the "chert/basalt unit." These assemblages were juxtaposed during middle Cretaceous tectonism along low angle and high angle faults. There is some evidence for additional structural deformation after the middle Cretaceous.

The Sedimentary Petrology And Sedimentology Of The Unnamed Middle Eocene Sandstones Of Scow Bay, Indian And Marrowstone Islands, Northwest Washington, Leslie A. Melim

The unnamed Middle Eocene sandstones of Scow Bay are well exposed on the beaches of Indian and Marrowstone Island, northwest Washington. The rocks strike approximately east-west and dip to the north except on the east coast of Marrowstone Island where the structure is more complex. Each of the four coastal sections was described in detail, and the most complete was also measured.

The sandstone beds are typically thin- to very-thick-bedded, structureless lithic arenite. Locally abundant sedimentary structures include dish structures, vague horizontal lamination, load casts, flame structures, soft sediment deformation, and shale clasts. Paleomagnetism Of Four Late Cretaceous Plutons North Cascades, Washington, William J. (William James) Harrison

Paleomagnetic directions of samples from the Ten Peak and Sulphur Mtn. plutons, Hidden Lake stock, and Oval Peak batholith in the North Cascades reveal multi-component magnetization and instability. In the Hidden Lake stock and Ten Peak pluton, a strong viscous overprint parallels the present day field. The Sulphur Mountain pluton shows complete magnetic instability; making it impossible to compute a meaningful mean direction. The rocks of the Oval Peak batholith are believed to have been magnetically reset during the Eocene, although the observed declination of 167° and inclination of -67° is significantly different from the expected Eocene direction. Kitsap County is located entirely within the Puget Sound Lowland in northwestern Washington State. It has a crenulated coastline 352 km in length. The Puget Sound Lowland, and Kitsap County in particular, is characterized by glacial landforms and sediments. Glacial activity is responsible for the shape and depth of the various water-bodies comprising Puget Sound, which is subject to mixed, semi-diurnal tides.

Winds from various directions cause waves which transport sediment along the shore. Over a relatively long time interval, sediment is moved in one predominant direction, which is the direction of net shore-drift. Variations in shoreline orientation cause shore drift to occur in discrete, essentially independent, drift cells.

By the specific identification of a number of established geomorphic and sedimentological shore drift indicators, drift cell boundaries can be delineated and the directions of net shore-drift determined. The coastline of Pierce County, Washington, lies along the glacially scoured channels of Puget Sound. The highly crenelated coastline totals 373 km in length, with approximately 80 km contributed by five major islands and five minor islands. This study was conducted to determine the long-term net shore-drift along the Pierce County coast. Geomorphic and sedimentologic indicators were used to determine drift directions. These indicators include: direction of spit growth, change in bluff morphology and beach profile, stream diversion, sediment-size gradation, identifiable sediments (sediments from an identifiable source), and nearshore sand bar orientation. Fossil diatom occurrence and anistropy of magnetic susceptibility are evaluated for their usefulness in differentiating glaclomarlne drift from till.

Fossil diatoms in Everson glaciomarine drift occur abundantly enough to be of paleoenvironmental significance only in association with in situ Serpula vermlcularia (Linne). Diatoms are generally a poor discriminator between till and glaciomarine drift. Paleoecological data suggest that, berg ice in marine water was the dominant agent of transportation for clastic particlesin Everson glaciomarine drift.

Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility investigations generated a characteristic magnetic signature for each diamicton, demonstrating intrinsic differences in the petrofabrics of the two sediment types.
