Underway and in situ observations of surface ocean pCO(2), combined with satellite data, were used to develop pCO(2) regional algorithms to analyze the seasonal and interannual variability of surface ocean pCO(2) and sea-air CO2 flux for five physically and biologically distinct regions of the eastern North American continental shelf: the South Atlantic Bight (SAB), the Mid-Atlantic Bight (MAB), the Gulf of Maine (GoM), Nantucket Shoals and Georges Bank (NS+GB), and the Scotian Shelf (SS). The extent, duration, and seasonality of sea ice and glacial discharge strongly influence Antarctic marine ecosystems. Most organisms' life cycles in this region are attuned to ice seasonality The annual retreat and melting of sea ice in the austral spring stratifies the upper ocean, triggering large phytoplankton blooms. The magnitude of the blooms is proportional to the winter extent of ice cover, which can act as a barrier to wind mixing. Antarctic krill, one of the most abundant metazoan populations on Earth, consume phytoplankton blooms dominated by large diatoms. Krill, in turn, support a large biomass of predators, including penguins, …

Northampton County is situated along Virginia’s Eastern Shore (Figure 1). Because the County’s shoreline is continually changing, determining where the shoreline was in the past, how far and how fast it is moving, and what factors drive shoreline change will help define the shoreline’s future movement. These rates and patterns of shore change along Chesapeake Bay’s estuarine shores will differ through time as winds, waves, tides and currents shape and modify coastlines by eroding, transporting and depositing sediments. The Shoreline Studies Program at VIMS established a beach and dune monitoring program for nine sites around the Virginia portion of Chesapeake Bay (Milligan et al., 2005). These sites were monitored twice yearly for four years (2001-2004). In addition to three years of relatively calm conditions, these data included the impact of Hurricane Isabel, a nearly 100-yr event, on the Bay’s shorelines. The shoreline’s change due to the storm and their subsequent short-term recovery was documented by this data. Since the end of the monitoring program other events have impacted Chesapeake Bay shorelines. In order to document the longer-term recovery …

Spatial Interferences Of Photodetachment Near A Repulsive Center, B. C. Yang, John B. Delos, M. L. Du

We study the detached-electron flux distributions from the photodetachment of electrons from a negative ion near a repulsive center. Using a semiclassical approach, we calculate the electron flux on spherical detectors with various radii. The classically allowed angular range of the interference patterns on the spherical screen increases as the detached-electron energy is increased. In the classically allowed range, we find that there are always two trajectories going from the negative ion to the observation point on the screen, inducing quantum interference patterns. We have also extended the formulas into the tunneling region. The interference patterns also reflect the quantum …

Concern about the decline in landings of American shad (Alosa sapidissima) along the Atlantic coast prompted the development of an interstate fisheries management plan (FMP) under the auspices of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Management Program (ASMFC 1999). Legislation enables imposition of federal sanctions on fishing in those states that fail to comply with the FMP. To be in compliance, coastal states are required to implement and maintain fishery-dependent and fishery-independent monitoring programs as specified by the FMP. Recent progress of physical oceanography in the South China Sea (SCS) associated with the western boundary current (WBC) and eddies is reviewed in this paper. It includes Argo observations of the WBC, eddy detection in the WBC based on satellite images, cross-continental shelf exchange in the WBC, eddy-current interaction, interannual variability of the WBC, air-sea interaction, the SCS throughflow (SCSTF), among others. Large-grain Nb has become a viable alternative to fine-grain Nb for the fabrication of superconducting radio-frequency cavities. In this contribution we report the results from a heat treatment study of a large-grain 1.5 GHz single-cell cavity made of “medium purity” Nb. The baseline surface preparation prior to heat treatment consisted of standard buffered chemical polishing. The heat treatment in the range 800–1400°C was done in a newly designed vacuum induction furnace. Q0 values of the order of 2×1010 at 2.0 K and peak surface magnetic field (Bp) of 90 mT were achieved reproducibly. A Q0 value of (5±1)×1010 at 2.0 …

Shoreline Situation Reports (SSR) were first generated by VIMS in the 1970's to report the condition and status of the shore lands. The SSR series were published in hardcopy on a county by county basis for each of the Tidewater Virginia localities. The reports were intended to assist planners, managers, and regulators in decisions pertaining to management of coastal areas and natural resources therein. This is the first Shoreline Inventory Report for the Rehoboth Bay section of Delaware. Data collected describes conditions in the immediate riparian zone, the bank, and along the shore. However, much of Lynnhaven River’s shoreline is suitable for a “Living Shoreline” approach to shore-line management. The local solvent acidities (SA scale) of six 6-carbonyl-2-aminonaphthalene derivatives as beta-cyclodextrin complexes in water are determined through fluorescence quenching. The local polarities (E-T(N) scale) are determined through the shift of the emission center-of-mass. The apparent SA values reflect the solvent structure surrounding the guest's carbonyl group, whereas the apparent E-T(N) values reveal the net polarity of the entire guest molecule. Comparison of these values affords greater insight into the structures of the host-guest complexes. Derivatives 1 and 5 show unusually large acidities, indicative of highly exposed carbonyl groups. The remaining compounds give emission intensities pointing to shielded carbonyl groups. …

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) adopted the Interstate Fishery Management Plan (FMP) for the American Eel in November 1999. The FMP focuses on increasing coastal states’ efforts to collect American Eel data through both fishery-dependent and fishery-independent studies. Consequently, member jurisdictions agreed to implement an annual survey for young-of-year (YOY) American Eels. The shellfish aquaculture industry in Virginia continues to grow, adding significant value to the state’s seafood marketplace. Today, watermen continue to harvest both hard clams and oysters from the state’s public resources, albeit at diminished rates. At the same time, Virginia’s watermen-farmers are providing growing quantities of additional quality shellfish to consumers. In recent years, folliowing the lead of the hard clam industry, a significant transition to intensive aquaculture of native oysters is underway. Vanadium dioxide (VO2) undergoes a phase transition at a temperature of 340 K between an insulating monoclinic M-1 phase and a conducting rutile phase. Accurate measurements of possible anisotropy of the electronic properties and phonon features of VO2 in the insulating monoclinic M-1 and metallic rutile phases are a prerequisite for understanding the phase transition in this correlated system. Recently, it has become possible to grow single domain untwinned VO2 microcrystals, which makes it possible to investigate the true anisotropy of VO2. With approximately 85 percent of the Chesapeake Bay shoreline privately owned, a critical need exists to increase awareness of erosion potential and the choices available for shore stabilization that maintains ecosystem services at the land-water interface. The National Academy of Science recently published a report that spotlights the necessity of developing a shoreline management framework (NRC, 2007). It suggests that improving awareness of the choices available for erosion control, considering cumulative consequences of erosion mitigation approaches, and improving shoreline management planning are key elements to minimizing adverse environmental impacts associated with mitigating shore erosion.

In the presence of Cd(ClO4)2 and a base, a new mixed N,S-donor alkylthiolate ligand supported both carbonate formation from atmospheric CO2 and the self-assembly of a novel bicapped puckered (CdS)6 molecular wheel. The remarkable stability of the complex was demonstrated by slow intermolecular ligand exchange on the 2J(HH) and J(111/113Cd1H) time scales at elevated temperature. Both CO2 and the base were required to convert amorphous “CdLClO4” precipitated in the absence of air to the carbonate complex. Beginning in 2014, many local governments must plan, finance, and implement stormwater management/ pollutant reduction action plans that achieve a significant decrease in polluted stormwater runoff within the next 10 to 15 years. These plans are required to meet regulatory commitments associated with Virginia Stormwater Management Program and Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) stormwater permits, Virgina’s Watershed Implementation Plan (WIP), and the Chesapeake Bay Total Maximum Daily Load (Bay TMDL) allocations.

Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) produced by the nitrogen-fixer Trichodesmium sp. has the potential to serve as a nitrogen source for the red tide dinoflagellate Karenia brevis. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) from laboratory cultures of Trichodesmium sp. was isolated, concentrated and then supplied as a nutrient source to K. brevis cells collected from the Gulf of Mexico. K. brevis abundance increased immediately after Trichodesmium sp. cellular exudate (TCE) addition, allowing the population to double within the first 24 h.
