Investigation Of Cryptotephra In Polar Ice Cores, Meredith Helmick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Volcanic ash (tephra) present within polar ice cores greatly supplements our understanding of past volcanism and its impacts on society and the state of the climate system. This thesis investigates the utility and limitations of ice core tephrochronology in answering questions related to volcanic source identification of ice core glaciochemical signals, tephrostratigraphy of an Antarctic ice core, and the timing of major and climate forcing eruptions. This thesis explores the efficacy of SEM-EDS measurements on ultra-fine (µm) volcanic particles for the purpose of geochemically characterizing a non-visible ice-embedded tephra and the subsequent identification of the volcanic source. In combination with …

Regional Scale Generalizations Of Firn Thickness And Snow Accumulation In Southeast Alaska: An Applied Deep Learning Framework, Jonathan Maurer Dec 2022

Regional Scale Generalizations Of Firn Thickness And Snow Accumulation In Southeast Alaska: An Applied Deep Learning Framework, Jonathan Maurer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

High elevation mountain glaciers are referred to as the “water towers of the world” due to their ability to store water internally and release it later through melt and runoff. Much of the work to understand these complex environments has focused on cold based polar glaciers in high latitude regions, neglecting temperate glaciers and associated snowpack which are more responsive than polar systems to minor climatic changes. Advancements in the availability of open source data, deep learning theory, and computational efficiency has opened up new methods of “data hungry” modeling that may be well suited to the type of complex …

Anthropogenic Effects On Tidal Distortion In A Tidal River, Matthew D. Fischer Dec 2022

Anthropogenic Effects On Tidal Distortion In A Tidal River, Matthew D. Fischer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Tidal rivers are landward portions of estuarine systems constituting the union between coastal, tidally controlled settings and rivers, where fluvial processes dominate. In these reaches, river discharge (mean flow) and tides are the two most important mechanisms in controlling geophysical flows. The processes governing water levels and current amplitudes in tidal rivers are highly nonlinear and modulated by external forcings- thus requiring sophisticated techniques for accurate prediction and forecasting. Physical oceanographers and estuarine physicists tend to limit their study area to the maximum extent of the horizontal tide (salinity intrusion), not the most landward point influenced by tidal water levels. …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I develop and interpret a record of dust deposition from the South Pole ice core (SPC14) to identify changes in atmospheric variability. The SPC14 core was drilled during 2014 – 2016 and provides a high accumulation (~7 cm w.e.q. per year) record in central Antarctica that reaches a depth of 1751 m (~54 ka). My analysis combines microparticle (dust) concentration, size, and shape metrics using continuous and discrete methodologies and high- and low-resolution multifractional Fe analyses that span the past 54 ka.

Results from my dust shape analysis suggest the common assumption of spherical dust particle shape in incorrect and …

Barriers To And Opportunities For Adoption In Maine’S Aquaculture Industry, Caitlin Cleaver Dec 2022

Barriers To And Opportunities For Adoption In Maine’S Aquaculture Industry, Caitlin Cleaver

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Aquaculture, or the farming of marine species, can diversify coastal economies, but development of this industry is hindered by negative perceptions or regulatory constraints. Commercial fishers are logical adopters of aquaculture, but can also mount opposition to its growth. This dissertation utilized innovation theory to understand fishers’ perceptions of and willingness to adopt aquaculture and drivers of and barriers to scallop aquaculture development in Maine (USA). Through a mail survey, lobster fishers’ perceptions of Maine’s aquaculture industry and their willingness to adopt aquaculture were assessed (Chapter 2). Individuals who were more satisfied with government management of aquaculture held more positive …

Extraction, Analysis, And Comparison Of Microplastics In Sc Marsh Substrates, Austin G. Sige

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The global, rapid increase in plastic production is a widespread problem for coastal environments such as marshes that present favorable conditions for plastic retention. This study looked at the microplastic abundance within three previously unstudied South Carolina marshes located in Myrtle Beach, Murrells Inlet, and Waties Island. A comparison between the microplastic types and abundances between locations provided knowledge about the impacts of sediment composition (sand, silt, clay, and organic matter) on microplastic sequestration. This study also produced a novel microplastic extraction methodology for cohesive marsh sediment that used elutriation to effectively break apart aggregates prior to chemical digestion and …

Improving Near Surface Refractivity Estimates In Marine Environments, Sarah Evelyn Wessinger Dec 2022

Improving Near Surface Refractivity Estimates In Marine Environments, Sarah Evelyn Wessinger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study utilizes in-situ measurements and numerical weather prediction datasets collected during the Coupled Air-Sea Processes Electromagnetic Ducting Research East field campaign to assess how thermodynamic properties in the marine atmospheric surface layer influence evaporation duct shape and to develop a simple near-surface modified refractivity estimation method. This study utilizes a logarithmic linear parametric model, which describes evaporation ducts via three main parameters: evaporation duct height, evaporation duct curvature, and mixed layer slope. Notably, most studies utilizing this type of model assume the curvature, C0, to be a theoretical value derived assuming neutral atmospheric stability; a thermodynamic regime that is …

Arctic Sea Ice Loss In The Pacific Sector And Its Impacts On Sudden Stratospheric Warming Events, Jiarong Zhang Dec 2022

Arctic Sea Ice Loss In The Pacific Sector And Its Impacts On Sudden Stratospheric Warming Events, Jiarong Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Arctic sea ice is a critical indicator of climate change. The extent of sea ice coverage over the Arctic Ocean has dramatically declined over the past few decades. The impact has been extensively studied through observations suggesting a linkage between the anomalously warm Arctic surface associated with the Arctic sea ice loss and the mid-latitude surface cooling in the subsequent boreal winter. This linkage could involve the wintertime stratospheric circulation by enhancing the upward planetary wave activity and weakening the polar vortex. With recent advances in climate model, more relevant studies relied on numerical simulations and some suggested that …

The Neches River rose-mallow, Hibiscus dasycalyx, is a rare herbaceous perennial endemic to East Texas. The threatened, obligate wetland species is currently at risk of being lost in the wild due to habitat loss, encroachment of nonnative and native plant species, and hybridization with two other Hibiscus congeners, Hibiscus laevis and Hibiscus moscheutos. Known locations of each of the three Hibiscus species were used to measure select soil characteristics and habitat variables associated with each of the rose-mallows. H. dasycalyx was concluded to be associated with more fertile soils and slightly more canopy coverage than H. laevis and …

Fossil Mammals From Hickory Tree Cave, Sullivan County, Tennessee, Alexis Rivera Dec 2022

Fossil Mammals From Hickory Tree Cave, Sullivan County, Tennessee, Alexis Rivera

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hickory Tree Cave, also known as Big Spring Cave, is located in the southern Appalachians and is known for fossils that are considered to be Quaternary in age. Fossil mammals were identified and assigned to the lowest taxonomical level possible. Most remains are fragmented or digested and it seems likely that various taphonomic processes are responsible for the resulting assemblage. The site lacks the extreme boreal component of Pleistocene cave faunas in the region (e.g. Baker Bluff Cave), with most reported taxa inhabiting Appalachian deciduous forest environments in North America today. While the presence of tapir (Tapirus sp.) …

This work focused on engineering bi-functionalized nanoparticles (NPs) based on carbon dots (CDs) to improve early cancer detection and treatment. Therefore, using folic acid (FA) as a targeting agent, the CDs were prepared to deliver high concentrations (HC) of doxorubicin (DOX) and gemcitabine (GEM) covalently and non-covalently to cancer cells. The prepared FA-CDs-DOX/GEM-HC NPs were characterized using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Assessment of the drug loading capacity (DLC) and drug loading efficiency (DLE) indicated that the non-covalent NPs have low DLC but high DLE compared to the relatively low DLE and high DLC of covalent …

Nitrogen-Doped And Phosphorus-Doped Epoxy-Sealed Carbon Fiber Ultramicroelectrodes As Electrochemical Sensors For Detection Of Hydrogen Peroxide, Emmanuel Peprah-Yamoah Dec 2022

Nitrogen-Doped And Phosphorus-Doped Epoxy-Sealed Carbon Fiber Ultramicroelectrodes As Electrochemical Sensors For Detection Of Hydrogen Peroxide, Emmanuel Peprah-Yamoah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ultramicroelectrodes (UMEs) are useful as probes for evaluating electroactive species in confined spaces (e.g., inside living cells) and for measuring fast electrochemical reactions. However, UME applications often require modification of the electrode surface to improve selectivity and sensitivity towards target analytes. Previous research in our group demonstrated that a simple soft nitriding method introduces surface nitrogen (N)-containing groups on carbon fiber (CF), leading to improved electroreduction of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on CF-UMEs. However, sensitivity for H2O2 detection using N-CF-UMEs was low compared to that for other modified UMEs. As an alternative to N-CF-UMEs, …

Weak Gravitational Lensing Analysis In Two Superclusters Of Galaxies, Sarah B. Rice Dec 2022

Weak Gravitational Lensing Analysis In Two Superclusters Of Galaxies, Sarah B. Rice

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Observations of the Universe on very large scales have shown it to be filled with galaxy clusters and superclusters connected by walls and filaments of galaxies, with vast areas mostly devoid of luminous matter separating them. It is widely accepted that the amount of luminous matter does not provide the mass needed to hold galaxies and galaxy clusters together, and the nature of the missing "dark matter" is one of the most prominent astrophysical mysteries today. Since dark matter interacts with luminous matter gravitationally, it stands to reason that dark matter might organize itself in a similar manner to luminous …

Bayesian Methods For Graphical Models With Neighborhood Selection., Sagnik Bhadury Dec 2022

Bayesian Methods For Graphical Models With Neighborhood Selection., Sagnik Bhadury

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Graphical models determine associations between variables through the notion of conditional independence. Gaussian graphical models are a widely used class of such models, where the relationships are formalized by non-null entries of the precision matrix. However, in high-dimensional cases, covariance estimates are typically unstable. Moreover, it is natural to expect only a few significant associations to be present in many realistic applications. This necessitates the injection of sparsity techniques into the estimation method. Classical frequentist methods, like GLASSO, use penalization techniques for this purpose. Fully Bayesian methods, on the contrary, are slow because they require iteratively sampling over a quadratic …

Turning Ligands On Their Side: Computational Investigation Into The Binding Of N2o And N2 In Transition Metal Complexes, Cole Donald Dec 2022

Turning Ligands On Their Side: Computational Investigation Into The Binding Of N2o And N2 In Transition Metal Complexes, Cole Donald

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Common greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) is a thermodynamically potent and environmentally benign oxidant, making it a desirable target for metal center activation. Unfortunately, N2O is a poor ligand for transition metals due to its weak sigma-donating and pi-accepting properties; as a result, few transition metal complexes capable of interacting with N2O have been found. As the primary source of all nitrogen in organisms, abundant gas dinitrogen (N2) is a crucially important tiny molecule and an essential part of daily existence. However, due to its inertness, it has limited practical uses in …

Identification Of Lung Nodule Using Hierarchical Graph-Based Clustering And Multi-Level Thresholding, Yash Trivedi Oct 2022

Identification Of Lung Nodule Using Hierarchical Graph-Based Clustering And Multi-Level Thresholding, Yash Trivedi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lung cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Compared to standard chest radiography, clinical trials have demonstrated that low-dose CT significantly reduces mortality from lung cancer by 20%. However, segmenting pulmonary nodules remains challenging due to intrinsic noise, low contrast, variable sizes and different shapes of the nodules. Radiologists manually drawing the nodule boundary is a common approach for delineating nodules which is time-consuming, expensive and prone to intra (the difference in repeated measurements by the same observer) and inter (the difference in the measurements between observers) observer variability. Also, most …

Thiophene Substituted 1,3,5-Triazines As Building Blocks For Liquid Crystals, Mojtaba Samiei Alalani Oct 2022

Thiophene Substituted 1,3,5-Triazines As Building Blocks For Liquid Crystals, Mojtaba Samiei Alalani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Discotic liquid crystals (DLCs), due to their self-organizing and self-healing properties, have been used in organic electronic devices. Generally, DLCs consist of a rigid central aromatic core that is substituted with peripheral flexible chains. Nanosegregation between their conjugated cores and the flexible sidechains often generates π-π columnar stacks that show a high charge carrier mobility. This thesis explores trithiothiphene-1,3,5-triazine based molecules with conjugated but conformationally flexible cores as building blocks for DLCs. Previous work has shown that these C3-symmetric (star-shaped) compounds with alkyl chains directly attached to the three thiophenes are not mesomorph. Studied here are derivatives with thioethers as …
