Simulations Of Coastal Currents, Transport And Population Connectivity Of Blue Mussel (Mytilus Edulis) In The Gulf Of Maine, Denghui Li Aug 2022

Simulations Of Coastal Currents, Transport And Population Connectivity Of Blue Mussel (Mytilus Edulis) In The Gulf Of Maine, Denghui Li

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sections of the coastal Gulf of Maine (GoME) differ in circulation, temperature, salinity, and primary production. These regional differences as well as their temporal changes, together with biological factors, such as the vertical migration, pelagic larval duration, etc., determine marine larval transports, and further affect the population connectivity, and community assembly in the intertidal GoME. To investigate the variations of coastal currents in the GoME, we built a high-resolution circulation model covering the shelf seas from Long Island Sound to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, This model was quantitatively validated with observed sea surface height (SSH), time series of temperature, …

Using Soil Testing Data To Examine Organic Carbon Changes During The Past 27 Years In Maine Agricultural Soils, Andrew Chase Aug 2022

Using Soil Testing Data To Examine Organic Carbon Changes During The Past 27 Years In Maine Agricultural Soils, Andrew Chase

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Agricultural soils may act as a source or a sink for carbon (C) in the global C cycle. With rising atmospheric CO2 levels, C sequestration in soils may play an important role in climate change mitigation. Soil organic carbon (SOC) also contributes to key aspects of soil health and fertility, such as aggregation, water-holding capacity, microbial biomass, and nutrient mineralization. Although SOC may be calculated from estimates of soil organic matter (SOM) obtained by loss-on-ignition (LOI), factors such as sample clay concentration and combustion temperature introduce error into estimates of SOM. We explored the potential for an extensive collection of …

3d Computer Modeling Offers New Insights Into Diatom Ecology, Joseph Mohan Aug 2022

3d Computer Modeling Offers New Insights Into Diatom Ecology, Joseph Mohan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Algae supply over half of the Earth’s global primary production and form the base of almost all aquatic food networks. Thus, changes in algal productivity or composition will induce profound shifts in many ecosystems. This research is guided by two questions. Herein I ask if 3D models of algae can be created accurately enough to use for research applications? If they can be accurately created, then how can these models be used to advance our understanding of functional trait evolution and paleoecology? Herein, I develop 3D computer models for estimating the volume of individual algae and their parts. I also …

Archaeological Bivalves As El Niño-Southern Oscillation (Enso) Proxies, Frankie St. Amand Aug 2022

Archaeological Bivalves As El Niño-Southern Oscillation (Enso) Proxies, Frankie St. Amand

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a climate phenomenon with periodic events that impact humans in the study area along the North Coast of Peru. In this region, Eastern Pacific and Coastal El Niño events are associated with anomalously high sea surface temperature (SST), reduced upwelling, and heavy precipitation (Grados et al., 2018; Sandweiss et al., 2020). Major changes in ENSO occurred during the Mid- to Late-Holocene, ca. 5.8 and 2.9 ka, resulting in rapid increases in event frequency to modern conditions. To better identify human adaption to changing climate during the Holocene, we must improve our understanding of ENSO. Though …

Theory Of Aqueous Solvation: Uninterrupted, Cyclic Hydrogen-Bonding Essential For Accurate Keto-Enol Energies And Grotthuss Tautomerism Of Acetone, Mark Recznik

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Keto-enol tautomerization (KET) is a fundamental process impacting a range of molecular phenomena in organic and biochemistry. However, the accurate computation of solution-phase KET energies remains a challenge, even for prototypical acetone.

In Part I, keto-enol tautomers of acetone were incorporated into solvent clusters that interact via uninterrupted, cyclic hydrogen-bonding (UCHB) networks. An empirical model was created to predict accurate KET energies, Etaut, of simple carbonyl compounds. Based on the availability of experimental data and structural simplicity, acetone was selected as a prototype. A discrete-continuum strategy was employed – accounting simultaneously for local noncovalent interactions and bulk-phase effects …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella are an annually recurring problem in the Gulf of Maine (GoM), resulting in risks to human health and substantial economic losses due to shellfish harvesting closures. The monitoring approaches in the region are restricted to real-time identification of the HABs events, when they are clearly underway and already causing deleterious effects to the environment. To fully function as an early warning system rather than an immediate response, monitoring strategies need to be focused on environmental conditions preceding A. catenella HABs. However, the current understanding of the preferred habitat for A. …

Intersections Of Environmentalism, Chemistry, And Racism: An Experimental Study Of Halobenzene Hydrogenolysis And Critical Communication Studies Of Equitable Learning Practices Rooted In Black Feminism, Lauren O. Babb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Increasing concentrations of fluorinated aromatic compounds in surface water, groundwater, and soil pose threats to the environment. Fundamental studies that elucidate mechanisms of dehalogenation for C-X compounds (where X represents a halide) are required to develop effective remediation strategies. For halogenated benzenes, previously published research has suggested that the strength of the C-X bond is not rate-determining in the overall rate of dehalogenation. Instead, the rate-determining step has been hypothesized to be adsorption of the C-X compound onto the surface of a catalyst. Building on this hypothesis, in this work, we examine the reaction kinetics of fluorobenzene conversion to benzene, …

The Effects Of Rising Ambient Temperatures On Thermoregulation And Range Shifts Of Northern Flying Squirrels, Elise K. Gudde

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Climate change may potentially alter a species’ range distribution and thus the relationship between environmental temperatures and animal performance as a response to climate warming has become an important area of research. Two species of flying squirrel in North America, the southern flying squirrel (Glaucomys volans) and the northern flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus) have undergone northward range shifts, with climate warming being the suspected driver. Because they are nocturnal and tree nesting, flying squirrels may be particularly susceptible to warmer temperatures, as they will experience the highest daily ambient temperatures during their resting phase. I used G. sabrinus as a …

Solving The Challenges Of Concept Drift In Data Stream Classification., Hanqing Hu Aug 2022

Solving The Challenges Of Concept Drift In Data Stream Classification., Hanqing Hu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The rise of network connected devices and applications leads to a significant increase in the volume of data that are continuously generated overtime time, called data streams. In real world applications, storing the entirety of a data stream for analyzing later is often not practical, due to the data stream’s potentially infinite volume. Data stream mining techniques and frameworks are therefore created to analyze streaming data as they arrive. However, compared to traditional data mining techniques, challenges unique to data stream mining also emerge, due to the high arrival rate of data streams and their dynamic nature. In this dissertation, …

Properties And Classifications Of Certain Lcd Codes., Dalton Seth Gannon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A linear code $C$ is called a linear complementary dual code (LCD code) if $C \cap C^\perp = {0}$ holds. LCD codes have many applications in cryptography, communication systems, data storage, and quantum coding theory. In this dissertation we show that a necessary and sufficient condition for a cyclic code $C$ over $\Z_4$ of odd length to be an LCD code is that $C=\big( f(x) \big)$ where $f$ is a self-reciprocal polynomial in $\Z_{4}[X]$ which is also in our paper \cite{GK1}. We then extend this result and provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a cyclic code $C$ of length …
