For some years there has been interest among mathematicians in determining the different ways in which certain graphs can be imbedded in given surfaces. M.P. VanStraten in 1948, determined that it is possible to imbed the graph K3,3 (which is the graph representing the famous three houses, three utilities problem) in the torus in only two ways. She then used this fact to show that the graph representing the configuration of Desargues (containing K3,3 as a subgraph) has genus two. An attempt was made to synthesize diethyl 7-dimethylsilabicyclo [2.2.1) hepta-2,5-dione-l,4-dioate by reacting dimethyldichlorosilane with the dianion of 1,4-dicarbethoxy- 2,5-cyclohexadione. The products formed in the reaction were silicones and 0-silylated polymeric materials. If any of the desired product was formed, it was not detected.

The past three decade has seen the widespread use of DDT as an insecticide. As a persistent insecticide, its use has prompted a great amount of research into the fate of DDT in living organisms. The purpose of this work was the stereochemical study of the photochemical solvolytic reaction of 3,5-dimethoxybenzoic acid, optically active 3,5-dimethoxy-α-d-benzyl alcohol was prepared. The specific rotation of the alcohol was compared to the alcohol produced from the photochemical solvolytic reaction of 3,5-dimethoxy-α-d-benzyl acetate.

The purpose of this investigation is the synthesis of bis- acenaphth- (1, 2a)- acenaphthene. The experimental procedures used generally follow those of previous workers. The use of 1, 8- dibromonaphthalene is necessary throughout the synthesis. The preparation used follows that of letsinger, after a preferred synthesis of 8- bromo- 1- naphthotic acid. The latter compound reacted via a modified Hunsdiecker reaction to yield 1, 8- dibromo- naphthalene. Other approaches tried never seemed to result in improved yields, or were successful. Besides this approach to 1, 8- dibromonaphthalene, an attempt to circumvent its need has been made by running a dilute …

1-3 dipolar cycloaddition is the union of a 1-3 dipole, a-b-c, with a system containing a multiple bond, d-e, to form a five membered ring. In this scheme, center c contains an electron sextet, and concommitant positive charge, while center c contains an unshared pair of electrons and is the anionic center of the dipole. In the cycloaddition reaction, the 1-3 dipole and the multiple bond system (called the dipolarophile), collapse to form a five membered ring with loss of all formal charges. Phosphorometric, flourometric, and absorption analyses have been developed for the measurement of amino acids, carbamic acids, and carbamates. The absorption analysis may be done in any solvent while the other two methods are limited to non-re-emitting solvents. Water is not excluded in any of the analyses. A carbamate or carbamic acid can be detected even in the presence of amino acids as low as 0.5%, with an overall accuracy of ± 0.3)%. Tentative assignments have been made for the n, π* direct triplet excitation bands for the carbonyls of glycine and its carbamic acid, acetyl chloride, ethyl acetate, and acetamide. …

Atomic interactions such as the formation of bonds between atoms falls into the range of physics described by quantum mechanics. The purpose of this project was the synthesis of bis-acenaphth[l,2-a] acenaphthene. The synthetic route attempted was the preparation of 1,8-naphthalylnaphthalene by reacting 1,8-dilithionaphthalene with acenaphthene- quinone followed by oxidation with lead tetracetate and treatment of the diketone with 1,8-dilithionaphthalene to give the product.

Aqueous solutions of dichloromethane have been irradiated with a cobalt-60 gamma source. Products of the radiolysis have been determined in order to formulate the mechanism of the radiation induced decomposition. Chemical analysis of irradiated solutions has shown that hydrochloric acid and formic acid are among the products of the decomposition. The effect of oxygen and dichloromethane concentrations on the production and yield of chloride ion has been determined. From the results, a mechanism for the radiolysis of aqueous dichloromethane in the presence of oxygen has been deduced.

The following thesis concerns the preparation of several alkynes and their conversion to alkenynes. Alkynes are of interest because of their potential biological activity (1), general reactivity to boranes (2), complexing ability with some transition metals (3), as well as other general reactions of π bonds (4). It was the intention of this investigation to prepare several alkynes with varying degrees of steric hindrance and evaluate the effect of this property. Double bonds were incorporated in several of these compounds to aid in the assessment.

Aqueous solutions of dichloromethane have been irradiated with a cobalt-60 gaama source. Products of the radiolysis have been determined in order to formulate the emchanism of the radiation induced decomposition. Chemical studies have shown that hydrocholoric acid and hydrogen peroxide are two of the major products of the radiolysis. Traces of formaldehyde have also been found. The effect of oxygen and dichloromethane concentrations on product yields was determined. It has been found that the product yields are independent of dose rate. Cassidy (1) fully outlines the historical progress of research to 1968 about the carbamate reaction; this paper will simply summarize that effort. It is presently believed that carbon dioxide is transported by the blood in three ways: 1) dissolved CO2 and carbonic acid, 2) bicarbonate ions, and 3) carbamate. Roughton and Rossi-Bernardi (10) have proposed the use of a glycylglycine and CO2 model for the carbamate reaction. The formation of a carbamate on hemoglobin is one method proposed for carbon dioxide transport in the blood. As of yet, no direct method has been reported for quantitatively determining to what extent carbamate formation occurs. The phosphorescence of glycine carbamate is of interest in this problem. Glycine is structurally similar to the globin endings, so that it presents a model that is simpler and more easily studied but still contains a sufficient degree of similarity to hemoglobin for the purpose of studying this reaction. The Uniform Charge Cloud Method, a model used to describe atoms and molecules, has been investigated. In the model, electrons are viewed as spheres with a constant charge density throughout their volume. In previous studies, it was found that the interelectron repulsion energies calculated for helium were too high, bond distances calculated for molecules were too short, and the model was unable to predict term values in accordance with Hund's Rules. In order to reduce these errors, electron correlation was introduced into the model. It was found that the errors were too large to be corrected by electron correlation. The …

The problem of the foundation of statistics is to state a set of principles which entail the validity of all correct statistical inference, and which do not imply that any fallacious inferences is valid. This sentence describes the purpose of much writing on statistical inferences, in general, and Bayesian statistics, in particular. Attempts at synthesizing certain halohelicenes for studies in the following areas are described: 1) the testing of a new method of resolving 2) electron spin resonance (ESR). Since the purpose of the study was twofold, the decision to synthesize monochloro derivatives of hexahelicene was based on the time element and the comparative ease in which these particular compounds were thought to have been brought about (i.e. in direct comparison to polyhalo and higher order helicenes). In addition to the traditional historical, theoretical, and experimental sections, an appendix contained a few suggestions relative to helicene research is included.

This work shows that is is very difficult to guess the proper configuration of the spheres for most atoms. This is clearly shown in the argon calculations, where Bent suggested a configuration that would have lowest energy, but it turned out to have the highest energy of those calculated. This shows the need to have a method to give the configuration of the lowest energy that depends very little on human insight.
