A Study Of The Pilot Plant Recovery Of Former Solvents From Wire Baking Ovens, Gerald W. Young May 1948

A Study Of The Pilot Plant Recovery Of Former Solvents From Wire Baking Ovens, Gerald W. Young

Honors Theses

Magnet wire is used in the manufacture of electric motors, generators, transformers, magnetic coils and many other types of electrical equipment. This insulated copper wire is made by passing bare copper wire from a supply spool through a bath of varnish into a baking oven and to a pickup spool. The bare copper wire is continuously coated with varnish. In the baking oven the solvent. is evaporated leaving a tough insulating film of formex resin on the copper wire.

Solubility Determinations In Anhydrous Ethylenediamine, Joseph Hooker Dusenbury Jun 1947

Solubility Determinations In Anhydrous Ethylenediamine, Joseph Hooker Dusenbury

Honors Theses

Although the preparation of ethylenediamine is reported in the literature as early as 1853, the first isolation of the pure anhydrous compound was performed by A. W. Hoffmann in 1858. He prepared the pure diamine by repeated distillations from metallic sodium, and reported on the great stability of the 111ono-hydrate as a hindrance to obtaining the compound in a pure state, More recently, in 1934, Bailar at the University of Illinois reacted the crude diamine with zinc oxalate to give a salt which is stable at room temperature and may be heated to 200° in vacuo (all temperatures in degrees …

The Preparation Of Phenyldibromnitromethane, Edwin L. Mincher Jun 1947

The Preparation Of Phenyldibromnitromethane, Edwin L. Mincher

Honors Theses

The purpose of this research was to prepare plenyldibromnitromethane. Also it was desired to make some physical measurements on the compound if the compound could be made in sufficient quantity. So far as the author can find out, phenyldibromnitromethane is not described in the literature.

A Study Of The Action Of Potassium Hypobromite And Sodium Hypochlorite On Adipamide, William Marzluff Jun 1947

A Study Of The Action Of Potassium Hypobromite And Sodium Hypochlorite On Adipamide, William Marzluff

Honors Theses

The Hoffman reaction of an amide with a hypohalite to give a primary amine in excellent yields is the basis of many syntheses in organic chemistry. This project is concerned with the study of the action of sodium hypobromite and sodium hypochloride on adipamide. Isolation of reaction products, if possible, identification of reaction products, if possible, identification of the products, and determination of the yield of the reaction were desired. It was hope that a diamine, putresecine, would result from this reaction, and therefore the steps in isolation of the products were carried out with this in view.

Honors Theses

It was the purpose of this research to observe the reaction of pentanedione-2,4 with formaldehyde, and to study the principle reaction product. The secondary purpose of the research was, if possible, to obtain a cyclic compound like 1,3 dihydrorescrcinol.

Dialysis Of Silicic Acid Gels, Arthur C. Glamm Jun 1947

Dialysis Of Silicic Acid Gels, Arthur C. Glamm

Honors Theses

The primary purpose of this investigation was to prove or disprove the existence of an equilibrium between polysilicic acid molecules and simple silicic acid molecules in a set silicic acid gel. The investigation involved the controlled dialysis of typical gels from their time mixing, through the time of set and into the aging period. Since numerous silica determinations were to be made, it was thought advisable to disregard the time consuming gravimetric method. The secondary purpose of this investigation was therefore, to determine if the colorimetric method for the determination of silica, as devised by Winkler (1) in 1914 and …

The Effect Of Sodium And Potassium Ions On The Time Of Set Of Silicic Acid Gels, Orin Chester Hansen Jun 1946

The Effect Of Sodium And Potassium Ions On The Time Of Set Of Silicic Acid Gels, Orin Chester Hansen

Honors Theses

This paper will deal with the relative effect of the potassium and sodium ions on the time of set. To determine this effect, gels were prepared using potassium silicate in place of the sodium silicate used in the previous experiments on the effects of electrolytes in this laboratory. The heat of activation for the setting of the potassium silicate gels was determined by the method used by Hurd and Letterton (7) in which the logarithm of the time of set was plotted against the reciprocal absolute temperature, the heat of activation being computed from the slope of the resulting line …

The Effect Of Polyvalent Electrolytes On The Viscosity Of Silicic Acid Gel Mixtures, David John Gimber Jun 1946

The Effect Of Polyvalent Electrolytes On The Viscosity Of Silicic Acid Gel Mixtures, David John Gimber

Honors Theses

Von Weimarn has shown that the degree of supersaturation at the time of formation, and the viscosity of the medium account, qualitatively at least, for the resulting character of the precipitate from a solution, whether it be crystalline of amorphous. When fairly concentrated solutions form precipitates they are usually colloidal in nature and may even be gelatinous, or a jelly may be formed. When a precipitate, thus formed, retains an appreciable quantity of the liquid in which it was dissolved in the form of a semi-rigid mass, it is termed a “gelatinous precipitate”, and if all the liquid is initially …

Heats Of Solution In Liquid Ammonia, Merwin William Warren Jun 1946

Degree Of Substitution In Ethylchlorosilanes, Charles Guare Jun 1946

Degree Of Substitution In Ethylchlorosilanes, Charles Guare

Honors Theses

When an organo-magnesium halide is reacted with an excess of trichlorosilane, a mixture of products results according to the equations. If phenyl magnesium bromide is used, a mixture of high boiling products results, the highest boiling point of which is approximately 250° at 14mm. pressure. If ethyl magnesium bromide is used, it may be shown that, making certain assumptions and under the conditions of the experiment, if ethyl magnesium bromide is added to the trichlorosilane, monosubstitution is promoted, whereas if the trichlorosilane is added to the ethyl magnesium bromide, polysubstitution is promoted.

Application Of The Cathode Ray Oscillograph To Polarographic Analysis, George Sidney Wooster Jun 1946

Application Of The Cathode Ray Oscillograph To Polarographic Analysis, George Sidney Wooster

Honors Theses

The object of this work is to devise a method of reproducing on a cathode ray oscillograph the current-voltage curves that are obtained with the Fisher Electropode, and from these curves determine directly the half-wave potentials of the elements present in a test solution. This test solution is composed of copper, lead, cadmium, and zinc ions in a supporting electrolyte of .1 normal k C1.

Dialysis Of Silicic Acid, Frank Witzel Jun 1946

Dialysis Of Silicic Acid, Frank Witzel

Honors Theses

There were two objectives in carrying out this investigation. To lend more evidence to the establishment of the polysilicic theory. To investigate the possibilities of using a colorimetric analysis for the determination of relatively large amounts of silica.

The Preparation And Rate Of Hydrolysis Of Glucosides, Thomas William Fair Jun 1945

The Preparation And Rate Of Hydrolysis Of Glucosides, Thomas William Fair

Honors Theses

The term glucoside has been applied to those compounds which have the property of supplying, upon hydrolysis, a sugar and one or more other products. Nearly all organic compounds which occur in plants (fruit, bark, roots) are in combination with a sugar. They all resemble the simple methyl glucosides. In many cases, the glucoside form is more soluble than the substance itself. Naturally occurring glucosides are prepared by extracting from the plant, by means of a solvent such as water or alcohol. Glucosides are synthesized (generally) from the non-saccharide constituent and acetobromoglucose in the presence of AgO or Ag2CO3. The …

The Effect Of Chlorides Upon The Time Of Set Of Silicic Acid Gels, Leon F. Wardell Jun 1945

The Effect Of Chlorides Upon The Time Of Set Of Silicic Acid Gels, Leon F. Wardell

Honors Theses

The purpose of this research was to undertake the investigation of the effect of extra quantities of electrolytes, particularly those of divalent cations, upon the time of set of silicic acid gels, keeping in mind any effect the added electrolyte might have upon the solution's pH. The silicic acid gels studies were prepared by the method suggested by Hurd.

Measurement Of Dielectric Constants, Francis Andrew Czech Jun 1944

Measurement Of Dielectric Constants, Francis Andrew Czech

Honors Theses

The increasing importance of a knowledge of dielectric constants of substances is shown by the large number of measurements that have appeared in recent literature- Several methods have been used in making these measurements, but probably the most precise ate the methods based on the heterodyne beat principle. This apparatus is designed to measure substances that are non-conducting. The condition of constant capacitance in the measuring circuit is the principle of the apparatus and is detected by the beat note between a fixed crystal radio frequency oscillator and oscillations generated by a variable oscillator. Otto and Wenzke (6) have used …

Synthesis Of Complexes Of Potassium Thiocyanate With Thiourea And Biurnet, Barclay Belding Fishburn Jun 1944

Synthesis Of Complexes Of Potassium Thiocyanate With Thiourea And Biurnet, Barclay Belding Fishburn

Honors Theses

The main objective of the work was an attempt to prepare certain compounds of the purine group for possible use in cardio-therapy, since the purine group is known to exert a stimulating action on the heart. However, under certain conditions these compounds cause a serious rise in blood pressure. It was thought that perhaps some compound which would produce dilation of the blood vessels could be combined with the purine group, to give a compound which would have the stimulative property, and in which the rise in blood pressure would be absent or at least minimized. Since such a type …

A Preliminary Polarographic Investigation Of Hydrogen Bonding - The Ortho- And Para- Hydroxy Benzaldehydes, Edwin Gerald Newstead Jun 1944

A Preliminary Polarographic Investigation Of Hydrogen Bonding - The Ortho- And Para- Hydroxy Benzaldehydes, Edwin Gerald Newstead

Honors Theses

The polagraphic method should be able to determine the presence of hydrogen bonds in ortho-hydroxy benzaldehyde in carefully buffered water solutions. The wave-height for the reduction of ortho-hydroxy benzaldehyde in acid solution is about one-half the height in basic solution. This would seem to indicate that the intermediate reduction product is formed by the reduction of ortho-hydroxy benzaldehyde in acid medium. This intermediate is stabilized by the presence of a hydrogen bond, so that further reduction to the hydroxy benzyl alcohol is not possible at the dropping mercury electrode.

Preparation Of Certain Purine Thiocyanate Complexes, Robert Wallace Carter Jun 1944

Preparation Of Certain Purine Thiocyanate Complexes, Robert Wallace Carter

Honors Theses

As the purine group of compounds is known to exert a stimulative effect on the heart, the object of this research was to prepare certain compounds of the purine group for possible use in cardiotherapy. However, a serious rise in blood pressure often accompanies the use of these compounds, it would be desirable to combine them with some compound which would dilate the blood vessels.

A Study Of Mixed Hydrogels Of Titania And Zirconia, James Borst Bouck Jun 1944

A Study Of Mixed Hydrogels Of Titania And Zirconia, James Borst Bouck

Honors Theses

Hydrogels of titania, formed by addition of bases to acid solutions of titanium salts, have been known since Rose's work in 1823. Hydrogels of zirconia have been prepared and investigated by several workers. These hydrogels of titania and zirconia are both acid gels, that is, they are formed at pH's considerably less than 7.

An Investigation Of The Reaction Of Bromopicrin With Liquid Ammonia, Seymour L. Meisel Jun 1944

An Investigation Of The Reaction Of Bromopicrin With Liquid Ammonia, Seymour L. Meisel

Honors Theses

The purpose of this research was to study the reaction between bromopicrin, also referred to as nitro-bromoform or tribromomonitromethane, with liquid ammonia. It seems surprising, but very little has been done on the reaction between these halogen nitro derivatives of methane and liquid ammonia.

The Relation Between Viscosity And Silica Concentration Of Silicic Acid Gels, Jules David Viglielmo Jun 1944

The Relation Between Viscosity And Silica Concentration Of Silicic Acid Gels, Jules David Viglielmo

Honors Theses

In this work we have again been concerned with the silica concentration but have elected to use viscosity measurements as a means of studying the process of gelation rather than the former method used by Hurd and Schaffer. As pointed out by Hurd and Santora, who use the viscometer in studying the effect of added electrolytes the process of gelation may in this way be observed.

Construction And Use Of A Bingham Type Viscometer, Harold P. Bodenstab Jun 1943

Construction And Use Of A Bingham Type Viscometer, Harold P. Bodenstab

Honors Theses

Bingham in his book "Fluidity and Plasticity" has described a type of viscometer similar to the Ostwald visocometer but which has the added feature of a variable applied pressure. By changing the pressure the time of flow may be controlled so that a rather viscous liquid will not have an inconveniently long time of flow in a viscometer which in suitable for another liquid. The construction of such an apparatus consists in teh assembly of a special viscometer with an arrangement for applying air pressure, measurement of such air pressure, and the placement of the viscometer in a thermostat. Such …

A Study Of Some Cyclohexyl Tin Compounds, Donald J. Giroux Jun 1943

A Study Of Some Cyclohexyl Tin Compounds, Donald J. Giroux

Honors Theses

Although a large number of organotin compounds have been prepared (Dr. Garzuly lists over one hundred and fifty), comparatively little is known about them. It was the purpose of this investigation to study some of the cyclohexyl tin compounds with a view toward finding out more about their preparation and properties, and to prepare some that had not been prepared before. Unfortunately time and circumstances prevented the latter.

A Study Of The Co-Gelation Of Silica And Titania, Theodore Male Jun 1943

A Study Of The Co-Gelation Of Silica And Titania, Theodore Male

Honors Theses

Silica gels have been the object of extensive research. Titania gels have been the object of limited research, but they have been reported as made successfully. The most commonly used silicate solutions are basic and the titanium solutions are acidic. Acids are used to control the gelation of silicon, and bases are used to control the gelation of titania. The imagination is taxed only slightly in assuming as plausible the use of the acid titanate solution to control the gelation of silica and the basic silicate solution to control the gelation of titania, and thereby produce a mixed gel. If …

Scattering And Polarization Of Light By Silicic Acid Gel-Forming Mixtures, Donald Male Jun 1943

Scattering And Polarization Of Light By Silicic Acid Gel-Forming Mixtures, Donald Male

Honors Theses

Much work has been done on the factors affecting the time of setting of silicic acid gels. The effects of hydrogen ion concentration, heat, and the presence of ammonium chloride and other soluble impurities are quite well known. Work has also been done on the gels, during and after setting, on such properties as electrolytic conductivity, surface tension, syneresis elasticity, viscosity and the ability to scatter light. It is with this last property that this research is chiefly concerned. The oldest known law concerning optical properties of a collodial solution is Lamberts' law of absorption.

A Comparison Of The Time Of Set Of Similarly Constituted Gels At Various Temperatures, John E. Macdonald Jun 1943

A Comparison Of The Time Of Set Of Similarly Constituted Gels At Various Temperatures, John E. Macdonald

Honors Theses

This investigation was undertaken with the purpose of obtaining more data on the question of the existence of thermally reversible silicic acid gels, i.e., silicic acid gels which would reliquify on heating. Some work was done in the highly basic region at 21 degrees and 40 degrees. An attempt was made to use the Leads and Northrup glass electrode apparatus present in the Union College Chemical Laboratory which, however, failed, although Spittle using this apparatus, apparently met with some success. In order to obtain data on the change of time of set with temperature of gels having the same composition …

A Preliminary Investigation Of Certain Purine Thiocyanate Complexes, Gerhard W. Leubner Jun 1943

A Preliminary Investigation Of Certain Purine Thiocyanate Complexes, Gerhard W. Leubner

Honors Theses

The purpose of the work has been to attempt to prepare some compounds of the purine group with regard to their possible use in cardiotherapy. Some of the purine derivatives such as caffeine, theobromide, and theophylline under certain conditions exert a stimulating effect on the heart, but under these conditions exert a stimulating effect on the heart, but under these conditions they usually also produce an undesirable rise in the blood pressure.

Heats Of Solution Of Silver Halides In Liquid Ammonia, Donald K. Stevens Jun 1943

Heats Of Solution Of Silver Halides In Liquid Ammonia, Donald K. Stevens

Honors Theses

It was the hope of the experimenters to make use of one of the advantages of liquid ammonia, that of the solubility of metallic sodium to give a free electron, to find the heat of reduction of the silver ion to the metallic state.
