Characterizing Groundwater Ch4 And 222rn In Relation To Hydraulic Fracturing And Other Environmental Processes In Letcher County, Ky, St. Thomas Majeau Ledoux

Masters Theses

Hydraulic fracturing of shale deposits has greatly increased the productivity of the natural gas industry by allowing it to exploit previously inaccessible reservoirs. However, previous research has demonstrated that this practice can contaminate shallow aquifers with CH4 [methane] from deeper formations. This study compares concentrations and isotope compositions of CH4 sampled from domestic groundwater wells in Letcher County, Kentucky in order to characterize its occurrence and origins in relation to neighboring hydraulically fractured natural gas wells. Additionally, this study tests the reliability of 222Rn [radon] as an alternative tracer to CH4 in identifying processes of gas …

Diatomic Carbon Measurements With Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy, Michael Jonathan Witte May 2015

Diatomic Carbon Measurements With Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy, Michael Jonathan Witte

Masters Theses

In this thesis, investigation of well-known carbon Swan spectra is of primary interest. Combustion processes and/or explosion of hydrocarbon fuels cause occurrence of the Swan band system that originates from diatomic carbon. Physical characteristics of low-temperature stars and the interstellar medium can also reveal the Swan bands. The diatomic carbon molecule shows that its lowest rotational levels are sensitive to temperature variation, and higher rotational levels are sensitive to the surrounding gas density and the radiation field. In addition, carbon is a crucial element for life and is the 4th most abundant element; therefore, it is important to ascertain accurately …

Advanced Sustainable Concrete Materials For Infrastructure Applications, Kaylea Ann Smith

Masters Theses

"This study was performed to examine the effects of cement replaced by high volumes of Class C fly-ash on durability characteristics of concrete up to 120 days. Specifically, this study investigates possibility of amending American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) to allow High Volume Fly-ash (HVFA) concrete to cure until later ages prior to testing instead of 28 days. Five mix designs were compared with varying fly-ash percentages from 0 to 70% (by total cementitious mass). No other additives were present in any of the five mix designs. Water-to-cementitious ratio (w/cm) and total cementitious material remained constant as 0.40 …

Fuzzy Adaptive Resonance Theory: Applications And Extensions, Clayton Parker Smith Jan 2015

Fuzzy Adaptive Resonance Theory: Applications And Extensions, Clayton Parker Smith

Masters Theses

"Adaptive Resonance Theory, ART, is a powerful clustering tool for learning arbitrary patterns in a self-organizing manner. In this research, two papers are presented that examine the extensibility and applications of ART. The first paper examines a means to boost ART performance by assigning each cluster a vigilance value, instead of a single value for the whole ART module. A Particle Swarm Optimization technique is used to search for desirable vigilance values. In the second paper, it is shown how ART, and clustering in general, can be a useful tool in preprocessing time series data. Clustering quantization attempts to meaningfully …

Cyber Security Research Frameworks For Coevolutionary Network Defense, George Daniel Rush Jan 2015

Cyber Security Research Frameworks For Coevolutionary Network Defense, George Daniel Rush

Masters Theses

"Cyber security is increasingly a challenge for organizations everywhere. Defense systems that require less expert knowledge and can adapt quickly to threats are strongly needed to combat the rise of cyber attacks. Computational intelligence techniques can be used to rapidly explore potential solutions while searching in a way that is unaffected by human bias.

Several architectures have been created for developing and testing systems used in network security, but most are meant to provide a platform for running cyber security experiments as opposed to automating experiment processes. In the first paper, we propose a framework termed Distributed Cyber Security Automation …

Some Combinatorial Applications Of Sage, An Open Source Program, Jessica Ruth Chowning Jan 2015

Some Combinatorial Applications Of Sage, An Open Source Program, Jessica Ruth Chowning

Masters Theses

"In this thesis, we consider the usefulness of Sage, an online and open-source program, in analyzing permutation puzzles such as the Rubik's cube and a specific combinatorial structure called the projective plane. Many programs exist to expedite calculations in research and provide previously-unavailable solutions; some require purchase, while others, such as Sage, are available for free online. Sage is asked to handle a small permutation puzzle called Swap, and then we explore how it calculates solutions for a Rubik's cube. We then discuss projective planes, Sage's library of functions for dealing with projective planes, and how they relate to the …

Application Of Loglinear Models To Claims Triangle Runoff Data, Netanya Lee Martin Jan 2015

Application Of Loglinear Models To Claims Triangle Runoff Data, Netanya Lee Martin

Masters Theses

"In this thesis, we presented in detail different aspects of Verrall's chain ladder method and their advantages and disadvantages. Insurance companies must ensure there are enough reserves to cover future claims. To that end, it is useful to estimate mean expected losses. The chain ladder technique under a general linear model is the most widely used method for such estimation in property and casualty insurance. Verrall's chain ladder technique develops estimators for loss development ratios, mean expected ultimate claims, Bayesian premiums, and Bühlmann credibility premiums. The chain ladder technique can be used to estimate loss development in cases where data …

Day Of The Week Effect In Returns And Volatility Of The S&P 500 Sector Indices, Juan Liu

Masters Theses

"Previous studies have shown that returns associated with the stock market or foreign exchange's futures show variations across the day of the week. On such study, that employs a modified GARCH model for estimation, shows that returns associated with the S&P 500 stock index is highest on Wednesday and lowest returns on Monday. The same study shows that volatility is highest on Fridays and lowest on Wednesdays. In this study we investigate if this day-of-the-week effect on returns and volatility is present in the different sectors that constitute the S&P 500 index. The data set used provides daily returns from …

Channel Morphology At A Meander Bend Chute Cutoff Partially Obstructed By Woody Debris, Drew Sobczak Jan 2015

Channel Morphology At A Meander Bend Chute Cutoff Partially Obstructed By Woody Debris, Drew Sobczak

Masters Theses

Field and flume experiments have examined the conceptual model for a meander bend in depth. Large woody debris piles are often associated with the development of a chute cutoff due to local aggradation and deflection of flow. This paper examines the bed morphology of a meander bend chute cutoff that is partially obstructed by woody debris. The bed morphology of the channel around the woody debris pile as well as the head of the cutoff are mapped. The pile is shielding the point bar immediately behind it and causing a narrow, deep channel on either side of the pile. The …

A New Technique For Modeling The Geomorphology Of A Slow Moving, Soft-Slope Landslide Using Terrestrial Lidar, Nathan Bradley Rohrbaugh

Masters Theses

"Soft slope movement is a big problem whether it involves an engineered slope, one that is near infrastructure, or both. Active landslides that fail slowly sometimes allow ample time to affect remedial works. In order to plan effective remedial works, there needs to be a model of the entire geometry of the slide. This thesis describes a new approach to evaluate the morphology of slope geometry using Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data obtained from simple targets strategically positioned on a slide body. The data was gathered in three-month intervals over a period of one year to allow enough time …

Energy Disaggregation In Nialm Using Hidden Markov Models, Anusha Sankara

Masters Theses

"This work presents an appliance disaggregation technique to handle the fundamental goal of the Non-Intrusive Appliance Load Monitoring (NIALM) problem i.e., a simple breakdown of an appliance level energy consumption of a house. It also presents the modeling of individual appliances as load models using hidden Markov models and combined appliances as a single load model using factorial hidden Markov models. Granularity of the power readings of the disaggregated appliances matches with that of the readings collected at the service entrance. Accuracy of the proposed algorithm is evaluated using publicly released Tracebase data sets and UK-DALE data sets at various …

Uncertainty Quantification Of Turbulence Model Closure Coefficients For Transonic Wall-Bounded Flows, John Anthony Schaefer Jan 2015

Uncertainty Quantification Of Turbulence Model Closure Coefficients For Transonic Wall-Bounded Flows, John Anthony Schaefer

Masters Theses

"The goal of this work was to quantify the uncertainty and sensitivity of commonly used turbulence models in Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes codes due to uncertainty in the values of closure coefficients for transonic, wall-bounded flows and to rank the contribution of each coefficient to uncertainty in various output flow quantities of interest. Specifically, uncertainty quantification of turbulence model closure coefficients was performed for transonic flow over an axisymmetric bump at zero degrees angle of attack and the RAE 2822 transonic airfoil at a lift coefficient of 0.744. Three turbulence models were considered: the Spalart-Allmaras Model, Wilcox (2006) k-ω Model, and the …

Cappack Devices For Enhanced Qnmr Measurements In 1H Nmr Spectroscopy, Lingyu Chi Jan 2015

Cappack Devices For Enhanced Qnmr Measurements In 1H Nmr Spectroscopy, Lingyu Chi

Masters Theses

"Quantitative NMR analyses can be improved by adding well-defined external references for measuring sample properties on absolute scales. Special Capillary-tube Package (CapPack) devices were invented that provide in situ information (e.g., temperature, pH, pressure, integration, chemical shift, lock, etc.) about a sample with spectral imprimaturs. A new microscale glass-sealing technique produced CapPack devices that can survive high temperatures and pressures in harsh environments. Two CapPack devices are discussed: (1) Gradient CapPack-- a device for examining the irradiation bandwidth of solvent-suppression pulse sequences; (2) T1 CapPack - a device for examining the T1 robustness of solvent-suppression pulse sequences. A …

Comparison Of Agency And Volunteer Stream Assessments Using Macroinvertebrate Assemblages, David William Petry Jan 2015

Comparison Of Agency And Volunteer Stream Assessments Using Macroinvertebrate Assemblages, David William Petry

Masters Theses

Professional stream assessments can be both time and cost intensive. Many states have developed citizen science programs in an effort to provide reliable data to supplement agency assessments. To test how two of these protocols and their conclusions compare, I sampled 16 sites in seven streams within east central Illinois using techniques from two different organizations: Illinois RiverWatch and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. Overall, spring RiverWatch, fall RiverWatch, and fall IEPA sampling all produced unique results and conclusions. Compared to fall IEPA assessments, spring RiverWatch was affected by differences in both sampling protocol and season. RiverWatch sampling in fall reduced …

Derivatization And Separation Of Natural Estrogens (Estrone, 17Β-Estradiol, And Estriol) Using Gas Chromatography With Flame Ionization Detection (Gc-Fid), Dena L. Guptill

Masters Theses

A major cause of concern for estrogens found in the environment is that even at very low concentrations (10-100 ng/L) they can have a negative effect on aquatic ecosystems by disrupting endocrine systems. Due to the increasing importance of monitoring the levels of estrogens in the environment, a detection method was developed to identify and quantify three natural estrogens (estrone, 17β-estradiol and estriol) using gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID). In addition, the efficacy of two derivatizing agents, N,O-bis(trimethylsilyl) acetamide (BSTA) and N,O-bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide (BSTFA), was evaluated. The GC detector (FID) was most responsive with E3, followed by E1 and …

Investigation Of Β-Cyclodextrin's Ability In Differentiating Chiral Guest Molecules And Synthesis Of 1,6-Diphenyl-2,4-Hexadiene-1,6-Dione, Guang Yang

Masters Theses

This research work comprised two projects. The first one mainly focused on the synthesis of 12 alanine derivatives and analysis of their interactions with β-cyclodextrin through 1H NMR titration. And the other project was an investigation of the conjugation effect of alkynones in its addition reactions with tributyltin hydride.

The synthesis of the alanine derivatives involved methyl esterification of alanine and then the substitution of an NH hydrogen with a benzoyl group. A total of 4 different substitution groups, labeled as the "A" groups, were introduced on the para-position of the benzoyl's phenyl group. Since alanine has one chiral …

Effects Of Treated Wastewater Effluent On Microbial Community Structure In A Natural Receiving Aquatic System, Matthew D. Hladilek Jan 2015

Effects Of Treated Wastewater Effluent On Microbial Community Structure In A Natural Receiving Aquatic System, Matthew D. Hladilek

Masters Theses

Despite our dependency on treatment facilities to condition wastewater for eventual release to the environment, our knowledge regarding the effects of treated water on the local watershed is extremely limited. Responses of these lotic systems to the treated wastewater effluent have been traditionally investigated by examining the benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages and community structure; however, these studies do not address the microbial diversity of the water systems. In the present study, planktonic and benthic bacterial community structure were examined at fourteen sites (from 60 m upstream to 12,100 m downstream) and at two time points along an aquatic system receiving treated …

A Simpler Route To Building Photochromic Cinnamaldehyde Semicarbazones, Byron R. Ebbert Jan 2015

A Simpler Route To Building Photochromic Cinnamaldehyde Semicarbazones, Byron R. Ebbert

Masters Theses

Photochromic semicarbazones are an interesting group of compounds that show potential in a broad range of applications, including as a more environmentally friendly replacement for photochromic metal complex compounds. Previous work has shown the feasibility to synthesize photochromic cinnamaldehyde semicarbazones (CSCs) from a benzaldehyde and a protected acetaldehyde Wittig reagent. A new, quicker, and cheaper approach to constructing these CSCs from crotonaldehyde was explored in this research. A three reaction sequence would convert crotonaldehyde to a CSC; first, an allylic bromination of the semicarbazone with N-bromosuccinimide (NBS); second, an Arbuzov reaction to prepare the semicarbazone phosphonate; and finally a condensation …

Hyperbolic Geometry With And Without Models, Chad Kelterborn Jan 2015

Hyperbolic Geometry With And Without Models, Chad Kelterborn

Masters Theses

We explore the development of hyperbolic geometry in the 18th and early 19th following the works of Legendre, Lambert, Saccheri, Bolyai, Lobachevsky, and Gauss. In their attempts to prove Euclid's parallel postulate, they developed hyperbolic geometry without a model. It was not until later in the 19th century, when Felix Klein provided a method (which was influenced by projective geometry) for viewing the hyperbolic plane as a disk in the Euclidean plane, appropriately named the "Klein disk model". Later other models for viewing the hyperbolic plane as a subset of the Euclidean plane were created, namely the Poincaré disk model, …

Novel Bodipy Dyes For Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells, Hafsah Klfout Jan 2015

Novel Bodipy Dyes For Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells, Hafsah Klfout

Masters Theses

Dyes-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) are of importance to efficient conversion of solar energy to electricity. The modern version of a DSC is a titanium dioxide nanoparticles-based electrochemical device, in which solar energy is absorbed by dye molecules and electrons from excited dye molecules are injected into the conduction band of titanium dioxide nanoparticle. The electrons are then transported through a network of interconnected TiO2 particles to the fluorine- tin -oxide layer to the external circuit. In this process dye molecules are crucial to the device's energy conversion efficiency.

Boron-dipyrromethenes, known as BODIPY dyes, show strong absorption in the visible …

Hyper-Heuristics For The Automated Design Of Black-Box Search Algorithms, Matthew Allen Martin Jan 2015

Hyper-Heuristics For The Automated Design Of Black-Box Search Algorithms, Matthew Allen Martin

Masters Theses

"Within the field of Black-Box Search Algorithms (BBSAs), there is a focus on improving algorithm performance over increasingly diversified problem classes. However, these general purpose problem solvers have no guarantee to perform well on an arbitrary problem class that a practitioner needs to solve. The problem classes that the research in this thesis most applies to are difficult problems that are going to be solved multiple times. BBSAs tailored to one of these problem class can be expected to significantly outperform the more general purpose problem solvers, including canonical Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs). The first paper in this thesis explores a …

Space-Based Relative Multitarget Tracking, Keith Allen Legrand Jan 2015

Space-Based Relative Multitarget Tracking, Keith Allen Legrand

Masters Theses

"Access to space has expanded dramatically over the past decade. The growing popularity of small satellites, specifically cubesats, and the following launch initiatives have resulted in exponentially growing launch numbers into low Earth orbit. This growing congestion in space has punctuated the need for local space monitoring and autonomous satellite inspection. This work describes the development of a framework for monitoring local space and tracking multiple objects concurrently in a satellite's neighborhood. The development of this multitarget tracking systems has produced collateral developments in numerical methods, relative orbital mechanics, and initial relative orbit determination.

This work belongs to a class …

Dependability Analysis And Recovery Support For Smart Grids, Isam Abdulmunem Alobaidi Jan 2015

Dependability Analysis And Recovery Support For Smart Grids, Isam Abdulmunem Alobaidi

Masters Theses

"The increasing scale and complexity of power grids exacerbate concerns about failure propagation. A single contingency, such as outage of a transmission line due to overload or weather-related damage, can cause cascading failures that manifest as blackouts. One objective of smart grids is to reduce the likelihood of cascading failure through the use of power electronics devices that can prevent, isolate, and mitigate the effects of faults. Given that these devices are themselves prone to failure, we seek to quantify the effects of their use on dependability attributes of smart grid. This thesis articulates analytical methods for analyzing two dependability …
