Theses and Dissertations

A new isothermal titration calorimeter has been designed to facilitate the study of heats of reaction and heats of solution at constant temperature. With this calorimeter, endothermic or exothermic processes can be studied at temperatures constant to ±0.0002°C. Heat effects are compensated by balancing the heat effect of the process taking place in the calorimeter against a variable heat and a constant cooling Peltier device. The calorimeter was tested by measuring the heat of ionization of water and the heat of dilution of aqueous HClO_4 solutions. For these systems heats were measured to an accuracy of ±0.02 calorie. An Investigation Of Column Efficiency And The Relationship To Liquid Phase Distribution On Ultra-Low Loaded Glass Bead Gas Chromatographic Columns, Donald G. Nyberg May 1968

An Investigation Of Column Efficiency And The Relationship To Liquid Phase Distribution On Ultra-Low Loaded Glass Bead Gas Chromatographic Columns, Donald G. Nyberg

Theses and Dissertations

Studies have been made of column efficiencies, extra-column effects, the liquid phase mass transfer term (C_l), and liquid phase distribution at ultra-low liquid loadings on glass bead gas-liquid chromatographic columns. The advantages of using lightly loaded columns are described in detail along with a critical evaluation of the limitations of this liquid phase reduction ad infinitum. Theories have been presented by Giddings^22,23,25,30,32 which predict the mass transfer term (C_l) as a function of two extreme liquid phase distributions. The first equation assumes 100% "capillary" liquid held at the glass bead contact points and represents a very inefficient column. This prediction …

Mechanical Effects Of Acoustic Transients On Tobacco Mosaic Virus, Philip Edward Hamrick Jan 1968

Mechanical Effects Of Acoustic Transients On Tobacco Mosaic Virus, Philip Edward Hamrick

Theses and Dissertations

The mechanical breakage of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) due to the action of acoustic transients has been investigated. The acoustic transients were produced by transient heating of a Prussian blue dye solution (attenuation coefficient of 1000 per cm) when a ruby laser light (20 x 106 watts) was incident on the dye surface. A quartz piezoelectric transducer was used to determine the amplitude and form of the acoustic wave. The production of acoustic waves by transient heating is discussed, and the theoretical form of the acoustic wave determined for various boundary and initial conditions are compared to the experimentally …

The Effects Of Groundwater Seepage On Stream Regimen : A Laboratory Study, Samuel S. Harrison Jan 1968

The Effects Of Groundwater Seepage On Stream Regimen : A Laboratory Study, Samuel S. Harrison

Theses and Dissertations

The effects of' groundwater seepage on the competence, bed rough ness, and water surface slope of small streams were studied in two laboratory fumes. The larger fume is 20 feet long, 3t feet wide, and 18 inches deep; the smaller flume is 12 feet long, 6 inches wide, and 10 inches deep. Both flumes are equipped so that groundwater seepage through the stream bed can be controlled and monitored.

In the absence of bedforms, upward (positive) seepage has little effect on stream competence or transport rate, even when quicksand conditions are reached. The decrease in effective grain density brought about …

The Geology Of The Newburg-South Westhope Oil Fields, Bottineau County, North Dakota, Hussein Marafi Jan 1968

The Geology Of The Newburg-South Westhope Oil Fields, Bottineau County, North Dakota, Hussein Marafi

Theses and Dissertations

The Newburg and South Westhope oil fields of the northeastern part of the Williston Basin are essentially one continuous secondary stratigraphic oil trap as determined by well log studies. The reservoir rocks in the two fields are carbonates present near the top of the Mississippian Ratcliffe interval and sandstone present in the basal unit of the Triassic Spearfish Formation. The two "pays” are separated by the post-Mississippian erosional unconformity which truncated the Ratcliffe beds.

The two fields are marked with depressions formed as a result of the dissolving of deep seated, presumably Devonian, salt beds and complementary gradual subsidence of …

The Relationship Of Church Activity Of Parents Of Lds Seminary Students To The Attendance Of Seminary Students At Church, Ronald D. Firth Jan 1968

The Relationship Of Church Activity Of Parents Of Lds Seminary Students To The Attendance Of Seminary Students At Church, Ronald D. Firth

Theses and Dissertations

It has been observed that not all L.D.S. Seminary students are active in church attendance. There is little doubt in the minds of educators that parents affect a great deal the activities of their children.

The purpose of the study was to learn what relationship, if any, existed between a seminary student's church attendance and the church activities of his parents, and to find out which, if any, of five specific areas of parental church activity had the most positive effect on a student's church attendance.

Based on his experience in the church, the writer chose the following areas of …

Secondary Reactions And Partial Rate Factors In The Sulfonation Of Chlorobenzene And Toluene, Ernest Arthur Brown Aug 1967

Secondary Reactions And Partial Rate Factors In The Sulfonation Of Chlorobenzene And Toluene, Ernest Arthur Brown

Theses and Dissertations

The sulfonation of chlorobenzene, chlorobenzene-benzene, and toluene-benzene mixtures by sulfur trioxide in liquid sulfur dioxide at -12.5° C. was studied to obtain isomer distribution and relative rate data. The isomer distribution for the reaction on chlorobenzene was determined by an isotope dillution technique. Relative rate experiments were conducted by sulfonating C14 labeled benzene in competition with nonradioactive chlorobenzene and toluene and the count rate of the products was used to determine product composition. Ultraviolet spectrophotometry was also used to investigate variations in isomer distributions as a function of sulfur trioxide concentration. The apparent relative rates of sulfonation (kX/kB) as calculated …

Recent Fluvial Geology In Western North Dakota, Thomas M. Hamilton Jan 1967

Recent Fluvial Geology In Western North Dakota, Thomas M. Hamilton

Theses and Dissertations

The thesis here abstracted was written under the direction of Lee Clayton and approved by Walter L. Moore -and John R. Reid as members of the examining connnittee, of which Mr. Clayton was chairman.

In western North Dakota many drainage channels that are incised into valley fill are characterized by steep, unvegetated sides. Many such channels contain actively eroding scarps. The origin of these scarps is most frequently related to increased water velocity causing accelerated erosion on a steepened reach of the valley flat.

The principal mechanism of scarp migration is soilfall which is initiated by undercutting of the scarp …

Refinements In The Isomer Distribution And Relative Rate Of Sulfonation Of Toluene And Hydrochlorination Of Olefins With Stannic Chloride Catalyst, David George Guillot

Theses and Dissertations

The sulfonation of toluene at -12.5° C. with sulfur trioxide in liquid sulfur dioxide was found to give 10.03 ± 0.20 % ortho, 0.73 ± 0.20 % meta and 89.24 ± 0.20 % para isomers. This isomer distribution was determined by isotope dilution analysis using sulfur-35 enriched sulfur trioxide. After dilution of aliquots of the neutralized sulfonation mixture with pure sodium salts of each of the isomers prepared from the corresponding toluidines, the isomers were converted to the p-toluidine salts, purified by recrystallization, and counted by liquid scintillation counting. The relative rate of sulfonation of toluene compared to benzene was …

The Synthesis Of 4-Spiro-2-Aryloxazolines Of Potential Pharmacological Interest, Paul Waddell Collins Jan 1966

The Synthesis Of 4-Spiro-2-Aryloxazolines Of Potential Pharmacological Interest, Paul Waddell Collins

Theses and Dissertations

Numerous and diverse physiological actions are found among 2-oxazoline compounds. No reports of the synthesis or biological testing of 4-spiro-2-aryl-2-oxazolines were found in the literature. On the basis of the known pharmacological activities of certain aza- and diazaspirans, it was felt that 4-spiro-2-aryl-2-oxazolines should possess medicinal activity. In particular, it was reasoned that the combination in a bicyclic spiro structure of the 2-oxazoline ring with rings systems commonly found in synthetic antitussive compounds might result in active antitussive agents.

The aim of this research was the synthesis of a series· of 2-aryl-2-oxazoline-4-spirocyclopentanes and a series of 1'-methyl-2-aryl-2-oxazoline-4-spiro-4’-piperidines. Six members were …

Theses and Dissertations

The design, construction, and calibration of a precision thermometric titration calorimeter is described. This calorimeter was tested by determining the enthalpy change for ionization of water. The result, 13.34 ±0.03 kcal/mole (standard deviation), is in exact agreement with the best literature values. This standard deviation indicates that, using this calorimeter, ΔH values can be determined with an accuracy of ±0.0.5 kcal/mole. A calorimetric procedure has been developed for the, simultaneous determination of the equilibrium constant, the enthalpy change, and the entropy change for a chemical reaction from a single titration (Entropy Titration). This procedure has been tested by determining pK, …
