What Color Are Purple Butterfly Wings: A Study Of Optical Structures, Victoria Halevy, Tyler Sterr, Bruno Deharak, Faculty Advisor

At first glance, morpho butterfly wings appear to be a purple color. However, when they are held up to the light, they seem transparent. This is because morpho butterfly wings get their brilliant colors from the physical structure of the scales on the surface of the wing. This structure is a series of ridges spaced a few hundred nanometers apart. When light shines on these ridges, interference effects cause iridescence. We measured the spectrum of light reflected from a wing as a function of reflected angle and modeled these results mathematically. We also looked at morpho butterfly wings using a …

Light incident on a material is scattered and then continues its propagation in seemingly random directions. If one can force light to pass through a material and not scatter, however, then one could “see” through the material. This scattering of light can be described as aberration within the light. A technique used for “Aberration Correction” is adding phase-shifts to regions of light allowing for all wave fronts of light to interfere in a constructive manner. This is accomplished in the use of a Spatial Light Modulator (SLM). The SLM, an array of linearly aligned crystals, allow for added phase shifts …

Graph labeling has been an active area of research since 1967, when Rosa introduced the concept. Arguably, the biggest open conjecture in the field is referred to as the Ringel-Kotzig conjecture, which states that all trees admit a graceful labeling. In this talk, we will give a bit of background on the problem, as well as present our own results. Namely, that a certain infinite class of trees (called uniform k-distant trees) admits a graceful labeling.

An introductory-level theory of integration was studied, focusing primarily on the well-known Riemann integral and ending with the Lebesgue integral. An examination of the Riemann integral's basic properties and necessary conditions shows that this integral is not very strong. This conclusion leads to Lebesgue's necessary and sufficient condition for Riemann integrability, perhaps where the Riemann integral ends and the Lebesgue integral begins: a function defined on a closed integral [a, b] is Riemann integrable if and only if the function is discontinuous on a set of measure zero. Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy (SECM) utilizes electrode probes that can be positioned just abutting cells and can detect the presence of small quantities of chemicals known as neurotransmitters. In order to detect neurotransmitter release from PC12 cells, used as model neurons, the electrode must be positioned very close to the cell surface to detect the change in current that accompanies the oxidation/reduction of the neurotransmitters released. The peaks in current were analyzed in order to detect differences in release mechanisms, such as slow or fast-release. Recent studies have shown that lead shotgun slugs and muzzleloader bullets often fragment inside game animals. The majority of ammunition types used in firearms that are permitted by the State of Illinois for hunting white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) contain lead, which is toxic to both humans and animals that scavenge deer carcasses. Although many studies have examined the impact of lead bullet fragmentation in game animals from high powered rifles, few studies have documented the presence of lead fragments from shotgun slugs and muzzleloader bullets in ground venison meant for human consumption in Illinois. Arithmagons are polygonal graphs whose vertices and edges are numbered by natural numbers in such a way that the product of the labels of two adjacent vertices equals the label on the edge that connects them. During the talk, Franco will briefly explore the conditions for solvability. The remainder of the talk will focus on counting the number of arithmagons that can be constructed so that the multiplication of all the values on the edges equals a fixed natural number.

The lower Bear River plays a large agricultural and socioeconomic role within the Cache Valley. Studying changes in the River’s flow, depth, surrounding vegetation, and river cross section is absolutely imperative in that these changes can have large impacts on the valley’s agricultural and economic well-being. The Bear River Fellows Program within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Utah State University was funded through the National Science Foundation. We extended the data analysis of the previous year’s research at three different sites within the Lower Bear River Basin between the Idaho-Utah state line and Cutler Reservoir on two separate occasions, August 13-16, 2013 and November 16, 2013. Our work included collecting river stage, flow, and water pressure measurements using standard surveying equipment, an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP), and pressure transducers. 'An Explosive Of Quite Unimaginable Force': Did Werner Heisenberg Obstruct German Atomic Bomb Research?, Aaron G. Noll

Why was Nazi Germany unable to acquire an atomic bomb during World War II? An answer to this question necessarily involves an analysis of the wartime conduct of Werner Heisenberg. As the undisputed leader of German nuclear research, Heisenberg was integral to the successful production of a bomb. Heisenberg claimed after the war that the Nazis lacked the economic resources for this project. Moreover, Nazi military strategy ruled out such a sustained long-term commitment in armaments development. Heisenberg explained that he personally felt fortunate that these circumstances prevented Hitler from having a bomb. He argued that he merely “pretended” to …

C-- is a programming language developed by M. Ben-Ari to teach principles of concurrent and distributed programming. It is a small subset of the C language but with the added features of concurrency, semaphores, and monitors. BACI is an acronym for Ben-Ari Concurrency Interpreter. JavaBACI is an open-source command line concurrency simulator used by students to compile and run C-- programs. NetBeans is an integrated development environment (IDE) that many students use in our courses to develop Java and C++ programs. What Makes A ‘Good’ Definition: Analyzing Students’ Conceptions Of Mathematical Definitions And The Pedagogy Of Definitions In Math Education, Jesse Aston

What are the key differences between how students view mathematical definitions and how their professors think they do? In this study we follow students during a guided reconstruction exercise in which they create a definition for, in this case, the convergence of a sequence and we record the process on film. Several theoretical frameworks including RME are then used to analyze student responses and behavior throughout the process and determine the difference in perceptions between student and teacher; these differences inform the best method to present definitions to students.

Motivated by the Asiana Flight 214 crash in San Francisco this summer, this project focuses on modeling an emergency airplane evacuation. Our models are based on the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm, where each agent's position is compared to a fitness function that describes the current environment. Each agent moves according to its knowledge of its own previous best position and the group's current best position. The static environment is modeled by a potential function that describes the layout of the airplane that includes the exits and physical barriers such as the seats.
