The LCDB of the MLPQ system contains multiple linear programming problems. The LP solver used in the MPLQ …

Distributed Query Processing For Structured And Bibliographic Databases, Ee Peng Lim, Ying Lu Apr 1997

Distributed Query Processing For Structured And Bibliographic Databases, Ee Peng Lim, Ying Lu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To support future digital library systems which draw information from different sources on the internet, we have to provide integrated queries to pre-existing database servers which contain structured, semi-structured and unstructured data. In this paper, we specifically examine the problem of querying both existing structured relational databases and bibliographic databases. By adopting the well-accepted Z39.50 standard protocol to access bibliographic databases in different legacy library systems, we have developed an extended SQL model, known as HarpSQL, to support integrated queries to both SQL databases and bibliographic databases. Using HarpSQL, one can not only query bibliographic databases in an SQL manner, …

Temporal Flocking And Cacophony Simulating Agent Communication In A Noisy Environment, Jessica R. Crawford Apr 1997

Temporal Flocking And Cacophony Simulating Agent Communication In A Noisy Environment, Jessica R. Crawford

Honors Theses

Realistic communication is one of the most difficult aspects of simulating group behavior because the patterns produced by group communication are complex and not easily definable. In this paper, we present a model, developed using artificial life methodology, for creating simulations of group communication. Our model employs autonomous, artificial agents to produce emergent group behavior that resembles the communication patterns of a group, specifically, a flock of birds. Each agent collects information about its environment and its neighbors and follows a set of rules designed to meet both group goals and individual agent goals. Because we seek to establish emergent …

Impacts Of Air Temperature Variations On The Boro Rice Phenology In Bangladesh: Implications For Irrigation Requirements, Rezaul Mahmood

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Air temperature significantly affects crop phenology. Numerous experiments have shown that prevailing air temperature determines the length of crop growth stages. Irrigation field requirements depend on the length of the crop growth stages. In the present study, a physically based parametric model, YIELD, has been applied to estimate the impacts of fluctuating air temperature (due to inter-annual climatic variability and global warming) on evapotranspiration water requirements and the length of growth stages of the irrigated boro rice in Bangladesh. The YIELD model is crop specific and crop-growth-stage specific which is a compromise between area-specific regression models and complex crop growth …

Analysis Of Organic Nitrates In Artic Outflow, Deanna Elyea-Piper Apr 1997

Analysis Of Organic Nitrates In Artic Outflow, Deanna Elyea-Piper

Masters Theses

The Arctic Outflow Study (AOS) was a project funded by the National Science Foundation to assess the impact of tropospheric ozone concentrations by the measurement of oxidized nitrogen. Measurements of arctic outflow were made to assess the seasonal cycle of compounds in arctic air and the partitioning of NOy during transport to the North Atlantic region. These photochemically active compounds are elevated in the arctic during the winter and spring because of the lack of photochemical processes to destroy them.

Measurements of PAN, Alkyl nitrates, NOy, NO, NO2, CO, HNO3, O3, and particulate nitrate …

Well Screen Characteristics Which Constrain Hydraulic Conductivity Calculated From Slug Tests, Christopher G. Amore Apr 1997

Well Screen Characteristics Which Constrain Hydraulic Conductivity Calculated From Slug Tests, Christopher G. Amore

Masters Theses

With the growing concern over ground water protection and waste water management, interest in the use of slug tests to characterize hydraulic properties of aquifers has increased. While slug tests offer an inexpensive alternative to pump tests, problems arise with collection of the tests and the interpretation of the results. Field tests and mathematical studies show that both positive and negative biases of formation properties have been obtained. The resulting errors can be traced to improper analytical techniques, incorrect assumptions of well configuration and aquifer properties, poor well installation and data gathering. Most of these problems can be corrected by …

Rounding Numbers: Why The ''New System'' Doesn't Work, W. Robert Midden Apr 1997

Rounding Numbers: Why The ''New System'' Doesn't Work, W. Robert Midden

Chemistry Faculty Publications

This paper explains a correction to the rounding rule previously publishedin this Journal. The earlier article reported that the best way to roundnumbers is to always round up when the first digit dropped is 5. However, this will lead to accumulation of error when errors are averaged. Arounding strategy that leads to less error is to round up when 5 isfollowed by any nonzero digits, but to round even when 5 is followed byzeros or no other digits. By rounding the last kept digit to an evennumber, half the time the digit is increased and half the time it is keptthe …

Three-Dimensional Aerodynamic Design Optimization Using Discrete Sensitivity Analysis And Parallel Computing, Amidu Olawale Oloso Apr 1997

Three-Dimensional Aerodynamic Design Optimization Using Discrete Sensitivity Analysis And Parallel Computing, Amidu Olawale Oloso

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A hybrid automatic differentiation/incremental iterative method was implemented in the general purpose advanced computational fluid dynamics code (CFL3D Version 4.1) to yield a new code (CFL3D.ADII) that is capable of computing consistently discrete first order sensitivity derivatives for complex geometries. With the exception of unsteady problems, the new code retains all the useful features and capabilities of the original CFL3D flow analysis code. The superiority of the new code over a carefully applied method of finite-differences is demonstrated.

A coarse grain, scalable, distributed-memory, parallel version of CFL3D.ADII was developed based on "derivative stripmining". In this data-parallel approach, an identical copy …

Study Of Impurity Modes In Photonic Crystals And Study Of Power Gaas Mesfets, Michael G. Khazhinsky

Dissertations

The dissertation consists of two projects. In the first project, impurity modes in Photonic Crystals are studied in one- and two-dimensional Photonic Crystals. Onedimensional systems are formed from an infinite layered array of dielectric slabs and are studied for linearly polarized electromagnetic waves propagating perpendicular to the plane of slabs. Two-dimensional systems consist either of parallel cylindrical dielectric rods in vacuum or cylindrical holes containing vacuum in dielectric medium. These rods/holes are arranged in a square lattice array. The electromagnetic waves in these system propagate perpendicular to the axes of the rods and are of E or H polarization. Green’s …

High Resolution Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy For Precise Gaseous Characterization, Audra Michiele Bullock Apr 1997

High Resolution Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy For Precise Gaseous Characterization, Audra Michiele Bullock

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Wavelength modulation spectroscopy is a highly sensitive, non-intrusive technique for probing gaseous species. Parameters such as velocity, density, and temperature can be measured and monitored with a high degree of precision. In addition, with the use of this technique multiple molecular species may be identified with a single laser probe. This measurement technique utilizes the well-known principles of modulation absorption spectroscopy in a novel way.

The research focuses on harmonic detection and the advantages gained by performing detection at higher harmonics, those greater than the commonly used second harmonic. We show that there is an increase in the sensitivity to …

A Soil-Canopy-Atmosphere Model For Use In Satellite Microwave Remote Sensing, Venkataraman Lakshmi, Eric F. Wood, Bhaskar J. Choudhury Mar 1997

A Soil-Canopy-Atmosphere Model For Use In Satellite Microwave Remote Sensing, Venkataraman Lakshmi, Eric F. Wood, Bhaskar J. Choudhury

Faculty Publications

Regional and global scale studies of land-surface-atmosphere interactions require the use of observations for calibration and validation. In situ field observations are not representative of the distributed nature of land surface characteristics, and large-scale field experiments are expensive undertakings. In light of these requirements and shortcomings, satellite observations serve our purposes adequately. The use of satellite data in land surface modeling requires developing a hydrological model with a thin upper layer to be compatible with the nature of the satellite observations and that would evaluate the soil moisture and soil temperature of a thin layer close to the surface. This …

Peculiar Velocities Of Clusters In Cold Dark Matter Models, Stefano Borgani, Luiz N. Da Costa, Wolfram Freudling, Riccardo Giovanelli, Martha P. Haynes, John Salzer, Gary Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

Recently, peculiar velocity measurements became available for a new sample of galaxy clusters, hereafter the SCI sample. From an accurately calibrated Tully-Fisher relation for spiral galaxies, we compute the rms peculiar velocity, Vrms, and compare it with the linear theory predictions of COBE-normalized low-density and open cold dark matter models (ΛCDM and OCDM, respectively). Confidence levels for model rejection are estimated using a Monte Carlo procedure in order to generate a large ensemble of artificial data sets for each model. Following Zaroubi et al., we express our results in terms of constraints on the (Ω0, …
