Neuroendocrine Aspects Of Primary Endogenous Depression Xv. Mathematical Modeling Of Nocturnal Melatonin Secretion In Major Depressives And Normal Controls, L. Kathleen Sekula, Joseph F. Lucke, E. Kevin Heist, R. Kenneth Czambel, Robert T. Rubin Jan 1997

Neuroendocrine Aspects Of Primary Endogenous Depression Xv. Mathematical Modeling Of Nocturnal Melatonin Secretion In Major Depressives And Normal Controls, L. Kathleen Sekula, Joseph F. Lucke, E. Kevin Heist, R. Kenneth Czambel, Robert T. Rubin

Joseph Lucke

We previously reported a trend toward a higher mean nocturnal serum melatonin (MEL) concentration, based on 30-min blood sampling over 24 h, in 23 female definite endogenous depressives compared to 23 matched normal female control subjects, and no significant difference in 15 male depressives compared to their controls (Rubin et al., 1992). In both groups of patients vs. their controls, there also were trends toward an earlier MEL rise time, by about 30 min, and a later MEL peak time, by about 90 min. Because the offset of MEL secretion was not estimated in that study, the total duration of …

Identification Of A Fish Host Of The Inflated Heelsplitter Potamilus Inflatus( Bivalvia: Unionidae) With A Description Of Its Glochidium, Kevin J. Roe, Andrew M. Simons, Paul Hartfield Jan 1997

Identification Of A Fish Host Of The Inflated Heelsplitter Potamilus Inflatus( Bivalvia: Unionidae) With A Description Of Its Glochidium, Kevin J. Roe, Andrew M. Simons, Paul Hartfield

Kevin J. Roe

A survey of the fishes of the lack Warrior River was undertaken to determine fish host(s) of the federally threatened inflated heelsplitter, Potamilus inflatus. Seven hundred-twenty individual fishes representing 30 species were examined; mussel glochidia were found on 10 individual fishes representing nine species. Potamilus inflatus glochidia were only found infesting one freshwater drum (Aplodinotus grunniens), which is concordant with previous findings for the genus Potamilus. The morphology of P. inflatus glochidia is described and compared to P. purpuratus.

Processing Small Quantities Of Walnut Logs For Lumber And Craft Items, Douglas D. Stokke, Peter Y. S. Chen, J. W. Van Sambeek Jan 1997

Processing Small Quantities Of Walnut Logs For Lumber And Craft Items, Douglas D. Stokke, Peter Y. S. Chen, J. W. Van Sambeek

Douglas D. Stokke

Many walnut plantation owners and woodworking hobbyists would like to process small quantities of walnut logs into lumber and discs for furniture and craft items. Various options exist for sawing, drying, and processing small diameter or short logs into lumber and cross-sectional discs. Portable band saws are a safe and inexpensive log breakdown option to commercial headsaw mills. Processing using the saw-dry-rip method will yield higher quantities of usable lumber from small diameter logs than the conventional saw-rip-dry method. Small quantities of lumber and discs can be inexpensively air dried under shelters or open sheds followed by approximately 15 to …

Risk Analysis Of Black Walnut And Red Oak Plantations, Douglas D. Stokke, Stephen H. Kolison Jr., Jianbang Gan

Douglas D. Stokke

Risks and uncertainties are prevalent in timber production due to the nature and length of the production process. This paper examines the volatility of timber prices and the effects of some economic uncertainties and risks such as fluctuations in timber prices and the interest rate on the economic returns of black walnut and red oak plantations. Historical patterns of timber prices for black walnut and oaks are investigated and compared with those of other timber species and stock price. The sensitivity of economic returns from black walnut and red oak plantations to changes in timber prices and the discount rate …

A Computationally-Based Hazard Identification Algorithm That Incorporates Ligand Flexibility. 1. Identification Of Potential Androgen Receptor Ligands, Steven P. Bradbury, Ovanes Mekenyan, Julian Ivanov, Stoyan Karabunarliev, Gerald T. Ankley, Walter Karcher Jan 1997

A Computationally-Based Hazard Identification Algorithm That Incorporates Ligand Flexibility. 1. Identification Of Potential Androgen Receptor Ligands, Steven P. Bradbury, Ovanes Mekenyan, Julian Ivanov, Stoyan Karabunarliev, Gerald T. Ankley, Walter Karcher

Steven P. Bradbury

To advance techniques for screening large data sets of diverse structures for toxicologically active compounds, an algorithm was developed that is not dependent upon a predetermined and specified toxicophore or an alignment of conformers to a lead compound. Instead, the approach provides the means to identify and quantify specific global and local stereoelectronic characteristics associated with active compounds through a comparison of energeticallyreasonable conformer distributions for specific descriptors. To illustrate the algorithm, the stereoelectronic requirements associated with the binding affinity of 28 steroidal and non-steroidal ligands to the androgen receptor were defined. Common ranges of interatomic distances, atomic charges, and …

Influence Of Geographic Origin And Soil Properties On Color Of Black Walnut Veneer, Douglas D. Stokke, Edward C. Workman Jr., John E. Phelps, Felix Ponder Jr.

Douglas D. Stokke

Walnut veneer frorn sites in Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana was analyzed for color attributes and chemical properties. Veneer color also was compared to an industry color standard. Soil chemical and physical properties were measured on selected sites in each state. In general, walnut trees grown on soils with equal proportions of sand, silt, and clay have better veneer color attributes than trees grown on soils with high clay I sand or clay I silt ratios.

The S0 State Of The Oxygen-Evolving Complex In Photosystem Ii Is Paramagnetic:  Detection Of An Epr Multiline Signal, Johannes Messinger, John H. Robblee, Edward Yu, Kenneth Sauer, Vittal K. Yachandra, Melvin P. Klein Jan 1997

Klein

Edward Yu

The photosynthetic oxidation of water to molecular oxygen is energetically driven by light-induced charge separations in the reaction center of photosystem II (PS II). The reaction is catalyzed by a tetranuclear manganese cluster contained in the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC). The OEC cycles through five different redox states termed S0 to S4, with S1 being the darkstable state. Oxygen is released during the S4 f S0 transition.1 The removal of one electron from the OEC on each S state transition leads to the idea that alternate S states should be paramagnetic because of their odd-electron number. The multiline EPR signal, which …

Nonlinear Dependence Of Lb On Lfir And Mh2 Among Spiral Galaxies And The Effects Of Tidal Interaction, J Perea, A Del Olmo, L Verdes-Montenegro, Min S. Yun Jan 1997

Nonlinear Dependence Of Lb On Lfir And Mh2 Among Spiral Galaxies And The Effects Of Tidal Interaction, J Perea, A Del Olmo, L Verdes-Montenegro, Min S. Yun

Min S. Yun

Through the study of a carefully selected sample of isolated spiral galaxies, we have established that two important global physical quantities for tracing star-forming activities, LFIR and MH2, have a nonlinear dependence on another commonly cited global quantity, LB. Furthermore, we show that simple power-law relations can effectively describe these nonlinear relations for spiral galaxies spanning 4 orders of magnitude in FIR and MH2, and nearly 3 orders of magnitude in LB. While the existence of a nonlinear dependence of MH2 (assuming a constant CO-to-H2 conversion) and LFIR on optical luminosity (LB) has been previously noted in the literature, an …

Tectonic Stability Of The San Luis Hills, Northern Rio Grande Rift, Colorado: Evidence From Paleomagnetic Measurements, Laurie Brown, M. P. Golombek Jan 1997

Tectonic Stability Of The San Luis Hills, Northern Rio Grande Rift, Colorado: Evidence From Paleomagnetic Measurements, Laurie Brown, M. P. Golombek

Laurie Brown

The San Luis Basin is the largest of four tilted, fault bounded Neogene basins of the northern Rio Grande rift in New Mexico and Colorado. It formed during the second of two episodes of extension beginning in middle Oligocene and extending to the present. The San Luis Hills are an intrarift horst of Oligocene intermediate and basalt rocks preserved in the middle of the San Luis Basin. Previous paleomagnetic and structural studies in the Espanola Basin to the south indicate counterclockwise rotation of that region during the most recent extension. Paleomagnetic samples from the two exposed formations in the San …

Assessing Surface–Atmosphere Interactions Using Former Soviet Union Standard Meteorological Network Data. Part Ii: Cloud And Snow Cover Effects, P. Ya Groisman, E. L. Genikhovich, Raymond S. Bradley, B. M. Ilyin Jan 1997

Assessing Surface–Atmosphere Interactions Using Former Soviet Union Standard Meteorological Network Data. Part Ii: Cloud And Snow Cover Effects, P. Ya Groisman, E. L. Genikhovich, Raymond S. Bradley, B. M. Ilyin

Raymond S Bradley

Groisman and Genikhovich developed a method to obtain direct estimates of surface turbulent heat fluxes. The authors now apply it to the territory of the former Soviet Union using the 3-/6-h data of 257 stations for the past several decades to assess the sensitivity of sensible heat flux to cloud and snow cover. This property was quantified for bare soil landscapes over the entire country. During the day, the presence of clouds is associated with low values of sensible heat flux from the surface to the atmosphere. At night (and during the day in winter in high latitudes), the sign …

Prediction Intervals For Weibull Order Statistics, H K. Hsieh Jan 1997

Prediction Intervals For Weibull Order Statistics, H K. Hsieh

H. K. Hsieh

Using a conditional method, explicit formulae for computing quantiles pertinent to prediction intervals for future Weibull order statistics are developed for two cases: when only previous independent failure data are available, and when both previous independent failure data and early-failure data in current experiment are available. The second case includes the case when only current early-failure data are available. Comparisons of interval widths are made for different estimators of parameters and different ways of forming prediction intervals.

Sensors For Site-Specific Management, Stuart J. Birrell, J. W. Hummel, K. A. Sudduth Jan 1997

Sensors For Site-Specific Management, Stuart J. Birrell, J. W. Hummel, K. A. Sudduth

Stuart J. Birrell

Site-specific management (SSM, also known as precision farming, precision agriculture, prescription farming, etc.) is a management strategy that seeks to address within-field variability and to optimize inputs such as pesticides and fertilizers on a point-by-point basis within a field. By reducing over-application and under-application of nutrients and pesticides, this strategy has the potential to improve profitability for the producer and also to reduce the threat of groundwater or surface water contamination from agrichemicals. SSM is being adopted by innovative producers across the country. Agricultural equipment manufacturers, farm input suppliers, and a host of other businesses are working along with publicsector …

Integrable Smooth Planar Billiards And Evolutes, Edoh Y. Amiran Jan 1997

Integrable Smooth Planar Billiards And Evolutes, Edoh Y. Amiran

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Any elliptic region is an example of an integrable domain: the set of tangents to a confocal ellipse or hyperbola remains invariant under reflection across the normal to the boundary. The main result states that when Ω is a strictly convex bounded planar domain with a smooth boundary and is integrable near the boundary, its boundary is necessarily an ellipse. The proof is based on the fact that ellipses satisfy a certain “transitivity property”, and that this characterizes ellipses among smooth strictly convex closed planar curves. To establish the transitivity property, KAM theory is used with a perturbation of the …

The Effects Of Sparging On P- And Sh- Vertical Seismic Profiles, P. Michaels, W. Barrash Jan 1997

The Effects Of Sparging On P- And Sh- Vertical Seismic Profiles, P. Michaels, W. Barrash

CGISS Publications and Presentations

While the introduction of pressurized air into an unconsolidated, coarse-grained fluvial aquifer might well be expected to affect the P-wave velocity profile below the water table, we have found that S-waves are also sensitive to changes induced by air sparging. In a study spanning over a year of sparging, observations of both P- and S-waves were conducted by Vertical Seismic Profiling (VSP). While the primary objective was to characterize the aquifer, we have found that air sparging has significantly affected both P- and S-wave propagation. Below the water table we have observed as much as a 54% decrease in P-wave …

Atomic And Electronic Structures Of Neutral And Charged Boron And Boron-Rich Clusters, J. Niu, B. K. Rao, P. Jena Jan 1997

Atomic And Electronic Structures Of Neutral And Charged Boron And Boron-Rich Clusters, J. Niu, B. K. Rao, P. Jena

Physics Publications

Ab initio molecular orbital theory based on both density functional formalism and quantum chemical methods has been used to calculate the equilibrium geometries, binding energies, ionization potentials, fragmentation patterns, and electronic structures of neutral and charged boron clusters containing up to six atoms. Calculations have also been performed on restricted geometries for BnX (n=1,5,12; X=Be, B, C) and B20 clusters to see if clusters can be designed so as to increase their stability. Energetics of doubly chargedB++n clusters have also been studied to find the critical size for Coulomb explosion. The results are compared with existing experimental and theoretical data.

On The Level Crossing Of Multi-Dimensional Delayed Renewal Processes, Jewgeni H. Dshalalow Jan 1997

On The Level Crossing Of Multi-Dimensional Delayed Renewal Processes, Jewgeni H. Dshalalow

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

The paper studies the behavior of an (l+3)th-dimensional, delayed renewal process with dependent components, the first three (called active) of which are to cross one of their respective thresholds. More specifically, the crossing takes place when at least one of the active components reaches or exceeds its assigned level. The values of the other two active components, as well as the rest of the components (passive), are to be registered. The analysis yields the joint functional of the crossing level and other characteristics (some of which can be interpreted as the first passage time) in a closed form, refining earlier …

Petrogenesis Of Mid-Proterozoic Granitic Magmas: Examples From Central And West Texas, Diane R. Smith, C. Barnes, W. Shannon, R. Roback, E. James Jan 1997

Petrogenesis Of Mid-Proterozoic Granitic Magmas: Examples From Central And West Texas, Diane R. Smith, C. Barnes, W. Shannon, R. Roback, E. James

Geosciences Faculty Research

Circa 1.1 Ga granitic magmatism in Texas was manifested as two compositional groups: (1) the 1.12 Ga Red Bluff granitic suite in west Texas; and (2) 1.12-1.07 Ga granites of the Llano uplift of central Texas. Both suites share some characteristics typical of 'anorogenic' granites (e.g. potassium- and iron-rich bulk compositions, Fe-rich hydrous silicates, emplacement conditions involving low oxygen fugacities and water contents) and exhibit similar isotopic characteristics. However, rock associations, mineral chemistries, and trace element compositions of the two suites are distinct and no single petrogenetic model for the two suites is possible.

The Red Bluff granitic suite includes …

An Approach To A Generalized Synthesis For 2-Halo-1,1-Diarylalkenes, Cheryll R. Roberts Jan 1997

An Approach To A Generalized Synthesis For 2-Halo-1,1-Diarylalkenes, Cheryll R. Roberts

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study was concerned with the development of a generalized synthesis of halogenated 1,1-diarylalkenes. The alkylation of 1,1-diphenylethylene was carried out by the addition of organolithium compounds (C Li, PhLi, t-BuLi, n-BuLi). N-bromo-succinimide (NBS) was used for bromination. The reaction forming triphenylbromo-ethylene gave the largest percent yield (93.6%). The reaction forming 2-bromo-3,3- dimethyl-l,l-dipheny1-1-butene resulted in a 38.1% yield. Each product structure was confirmed by proton and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance, and infrared spectroscopy.

Determination Of Selected Hydrocarbon Concentrations In Reformate Using Near Infrared Spectroscopy, Roy Roger Bledsoe Jr.

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Near infrared spectroscopy was used as a quantitative technique employing multiple linear regression and partial least squares regression for determining the concentration of hydrocarbon groups and individual hydrocarbons present in reformate, a refinery process stream. Models were generated for total aromatics, benzene, toluene, total xylenes and individual xylene isomers, ethylbenzene, total paraffins, n-hexane, n-heptane, total isoparaffins, isopentane, 2-methylhexane, total naphthenes, methylcyclopentane, and total olefins. Some models are being used with an on-line instrument to constantly monitor a reformate stream as it leaves the reforming unit, with a standard error of performance of 0.118 volume percent for the prediction …
