Rodent Exclusion Techniques, Gerard Hoddenbach, Jerry Johnson, Carol Disalvo Jan 1997

Rodent Exclusion Techniques, Gerard Hoddenbach, Jerry Johnson, Carol Disalvo

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

Rodents have been a common problem in living and working environments, probably, ever since humans began living in permanent dwellings. Even today many people believe rodent infestations are "inevitable". However, the recent appearance of Hantavirus (Sin Nombre Virus, Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, HPS) in the Western states has re-awakened the public to the serious health problems posed by rodents and has prompted new inquiries into more effective ways to manage infestations. This manual is designed as a training reference for making rodent control in buildings an attainable goal.

Institutional Animal Care And Use Committees: A Flawed Paradigm Or Work In Progress?, John P. Gluck, F. Barbara Orlans Jan 1997

Institutional Animal Care And Use Committees: A Flawed Paradigm Or Work In Progress?, John P. Gluck, F. Barbara Orlans

Animal Welfare Collection

In his challenging article, Steneck (1997) criticized the creation of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) system established by the 1985 amendments to the Animal Welfare Act. He saw the IACUC review and approval of biomedical and behavioral research with animals as an unnecessary "reassignment" of duties from existing animal care programs to IACUC committees. He argued that the committees are unable to do the work expected of them for basically three reasons: (a) the membership lacks the expertise in matters relevant to animal research and care, (b) there exists an inherent and disabling conflict of interest, and …

Genetic Divergence And Evolutionary Times: Calibrating A Protein Clock For South-European Stenasellus Species (Crustacea Isopoda), Valerio Ketmaier, Roberto Argano, Marina Cobolli, Elvira De Matthaeis Jan 1997

Genetic Divergence And Evolutionary Times: Calibrating A Protein Clock For South-European Stenasellus Species (Crustacea Isopoda), Valerio Ketmaier, Roberto Argano, Marina Cobolli, Elvira De Matthaeis

International Journal of Speleology

We studied genetic divergence in a group of exclusively stygobiont isopods of the family Stenasellidae. In particular, we assessed evolutionary relationships among several populations of Stenasellus racovitzai and Stenasellus virei. To place this study in a phylogenetic context. we used another species of Stenasellus, S. assorgiai, as an outgroup. S. racovitzai occurs in Corsica, Sardinia and in the fossil islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, while S. virei is a polytypic species widely distributed in the central France and Pyrenean area. This vicariant distribution is believed to be the result of the disjunction of the Sardinia-Corsica microplate from …

The Interaction Of A Point Vortex With A Wall-Bounded Vortex Layer, Oliver V. Atassi, Andrew J. Bernoff, Seth Lichter Jan 1997

The Interaction Of A Point Vortex With A Wall-Bounded Vortex Layer, Oliver V. Atassi, Andrew J. Bernoff, Seth Lichter

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

The interaction of a point vortex with a layer of constant vorticity, bounded below by a wall and above by an irrotational flow, is investigated as a model of vortex–boundary layer interaction. This model calculates both the evolution of the interface which separates the vortex layer from the irrotational flow and the trajectory of the vortex. In order to determine the conditions which lead to sustained unsteady interaction, three cases are investigated where the mutual interaction between the vortex and interface is initially assumed to be weak. (i) When a weak point vortex lies outside the layer, the vortex moves …

Positive Solution Curves Of Semipositone Problems With Concave Nonlinearities, Alfonso Castro, Sudhasree Gadam, Ratnasingham Shivaji Jan 1997

Positive Solution Curves Of Semipositone Problems With Concave Nonlinearities, Alfonso Castro, Sudhasree Gadam, Ratnasingham Shivaji

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We consider the positive solutions to the semilinear equation:

-Δu(x) = λf(u(x)) for x ∈ Ω

u(x) = 0 for x ∈ ∂Ω

where Ω denotes a smooth bounded region in RN (N > 1) and λ > 0. Here f :[0, ∞)→R is assumed to be monotonically increasing, concave and such that f(0) < 0 (semipositone). Assuming that f'(∞) ≡ lim t→∞ f'(t) > 0, we establish the stability and uniqueness of large positive solutions in terms of (f(t)/t)'. When Ω is a ball, we determine the exact number of positive solutions for each λ > 0. We also obtain the geometry of the branches of positive solutions completely and establish how …

Indicator Bacteria Concentrations Of Two Northwest Arkansas Streams In Relation To Flow And Season, Dwayne R. Edwards, Mark S. Coyne, Tommy C. Daniel, P. F. Vendrell, J. F. Murdoch, P. A. Moore Jr. Jan 1997

Indicator Bacteria Concentrations Of Two Northwest Arkansas Streams In Relation To Flow And Season, Dwayne R. Edwards, Mark S. Coyne, Tommy C. Daniel, P. F. Vendrell, J. F. Murdoch, P. A. Moore Jr.

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Concentrations of indicator bacteria such as fecal coliform (FC) and fecal streptococcus (FS) are often used to assess the suitability of waters for their intended use(s) and to allocate resources for water quality improvement measures. There is evidence, however, that concentrations of FC and FS can be influenced by variables such as season and flow rate during sampling, which could lead to biased results. The objective of this study was to assess the impacts of season and flow rate on concentrations of FC and FS. Fecal indicator bacteria concentrations were measured for approximately three years at five sites on two …

Behavioral Responses Of Bottlenose Dolphins To Remote Biopsy Sampling And Observations Of Surgical Biopsy Wound Healing, David W. Weller, Victor G. Cockcroft, Bernd Würsig, Spencer K. Lynn, Dagmar Fertl Jan 1997

Behavioral Responses Of Bottlenose Dolphins To Remote Biopsy Sampling And Observations Of Surgical Biopsy Wound Healing, David W. Weller, Victor G. Cockcroft, Bernd Würsig, Spencer K. Lynn, Dagmar Fertl

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Information on reactions of delphinids to biopsy sampling and healing of associated biopsy wounds is limited. Results presented here report on the behavioral responses of free-ranging bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) to remote biopsy sampling procedures, and provide information on stages of surgical biopsy wound repair. Biopsy samples of free-ranging dolphins were collected between February–May 1992 in Galveston Bay, Texas, using a sterilized corer-tipped bolt, launched from a crossbow. A total of 8 direct ‘hits’ were documented, 4 hits (50%) in which a tissue sample was obtained, 2 hits (25%) from which no sample was retrieved, and 2 hits …

First Estimates Of Vaquita Abundance, Jay Barlow, Tim Gerrodette, Greg Silber Jan 1997

First Estimates Of Vaquita Abundance, Jay Barlow, Tim Gerrodette, Greg Silber

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

The abundance of the only population of vaquitas, Gulf of California harbor porpoise (Phocoena sinus), is estimated from four surveys conducted in Mexico between 1986 and 1993, using a variety of methods. A line-transect approach was applied, using some parameters estimated from a related species, the harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). Vaquita abundance is estimated as 503 (CV = 0.63) from 1986-1988 boat surveys, 885 (CV = 0.50) from 1988-- 1989 aerial surveys, 572 (CV = 1.43) from a 1991 aerial survey, and 224 (CV = 0.39) from a 1993 ship survey. A weighted log-linear regression in …

Response Surface Methodology: An Analytical Method For Locating Migrated Contaminant Sources, Orlando J. Dona Jr. Jan 1997

Response Surface Methodology: An Analytical Method For Locating Migrated Contaminant Sources, Orlando J. Dona Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The use and storage of hazardous chemicals at U.S. military facilities often adversely affect the groundwater when contaminants infiltrate the subsurface as a result of leaks and accidental spills. These contaminants, if not located and remediated in a relatively short time, may move and settle unpredictably, essentially creating a source some distance from the original leak or spill. An example of this phenomenon is found with migrating dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) contaminants. Although various methods for estimating the present day locations of these migrated contaminants are in use, accurately pinpointing the source of contaminants remains a difficult problem in …

The Nordstrom–Robinson Code Is Algebraic-Geometric, Judy L. Walker Jan 1997

The Nordstrom–Robinson Code Is Algebraic-Geometric, Judy L. Walker

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

The techniques of algebraic geometry have been widely and successfully applied to the study of linear codes over finite field since the early 1980’s. Recently, there has been an increased interest in the study of linear codes over finite rings. In a previous paper [10], we combined these two approaches to coding theory by introducing and studying algebraic-geometric codes over rings. In this correspondence, we show that the Nordstrom–Robinson code is the image under the Gray mapping of an algebraic geometric code over Z = 4Z.

Review Of Personal Identification Systems, J. M. Cross Jan 1997

Review Of Personal Identification Systems, J. M. Cross

Research outputs pre 2011

The growth of the use of biometric personal identification systems has been relatively steady over the last 20 years. The expected biometric revolution which was forecast since the mid 1970's has not yet occurred. The main factor for lower than expected growth has been the cost and user acceptance of the systems. During the last few years, however, a new generation of more reliable, less expensive and better designed biometric devices have come onto the market. This combined with the anticipated expansion of new reliable, user friendly inexpensive systems provides a signal that the revolution is about to begin. This …

Effect Of Sulfate On The Release Rate Of Al3+ From Gibbsite In Low-Temperature Acidic Waters, Moira K. Ridley, David J. Wesolowski, Donald A. Palmer, Pascale Bénézeth, Richard Kettler Jan 1997

Effect Of Sulfate On The Release Rate Of Al3+ From Gibbsite In Low-Temperature Acidic Waters, Moira K. Ridley, David J. Wesolowski, Donald A. Palmer, Pascale Bénézeth, Richard Kettler

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Solubility experiments were performed at 5 °C by reacting 1 g of powdered gibbsite with 45 g of aqueous H2SO4-NaCl and HCl-NaCl (0.01 m H+) solutions at 0.1 m ionic strength. The kinetics of dissolution were monitored under extremely undersaturated conditions and appeared to favor a zero-order rate-determining process. The dissolution rate of gibbsite in the sulfate solution was approximately 10 times faster than in the HCl solution, which is consistent with trends reported in the literature for studies performed at higher temperatures. The enhanced dissolution kinetics of gibbsite (and by analogy, other aluminum-containing minerals) in …

Timestamp-Based Approach For The Detection And Resolution Of Mutual Conflicts In Distributed Systems, Sanjay Kumar Madria Jan 1997

Timestamp-Based Approach For The Detection And Resolution Of Mutual Conflicts In Distributed Systems, Sanjay Kumar Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a timestamp based algorithm for the detection of both write-write and read-write conflicts for a single file in distributed systems during network partitions. Our algorithm allows operations to occur in different network partitions simultaneously. When the sites from different partitions merge, the algorithm detects and resolves both read-write and write-write conflicts without taking into account the semantics of the transactions. Once the conflicts have been detected some reconciliation steps for the resolution of conflicts have also been proposed. Our algorithm will be useful in real-time systems where timeliness of operations is more important than response time (delayed commit)

Direct Finite First-Order Model Generation With Negative Constraint Propagation Heuristic, Olga Shumsky, Ralph W. Wilkerson, Fikret Ercal, William W. Mccune

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

An Automated Finite First-Order Model Generator Has Been Developed. the Problem is Viewed as a First-Order Satisfiability Problem. Most Existing Model Generators Reduce the Problem to Propositional Satisfiability by Converting the Input First-Order Clauses into Propositional Clauses. This Generator, Unlike Others, Stores the Input First-Order Clauses and Solves the Problem Directly. It Uses an Exhaustive Backtracking Algorithm with Weight-Based Splitting. a Negative Constraint Propagation is Implemented to Reduce the Number of Decision Points and Thus to Speed Up the Search. © 1997 ACM.

Evolutionary Computation Applied To Adaptive Information Filtering, Daniel R. Tauritz, Ida G. Sprinkhuizen-Kuyper, Joost N. Kok Jan 1997

Evolutionary Computation Applied To Adaptive Information Filtering, Daniel R. Tauritz, Ida G. Sprinkhuizen-Kuyper, Joost N. Kok

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Information Filtering is concerned with filtering data streams in such a way as to leave only pertinent data (information) to be perused. When the data streams are produced in a changing environment the filtering has to adapt too in order to remain effective. Adaptive Information Filtering is concerned with filtering in changing environments. The changes may occur both on the transmission side (the nature of the streams can change), and on the reception side (the interest of a user can change). Weighted trigram analysis is a quick and flexible technique for describing the contents of a document. A novel application …

Electron Shock Waves: Effect Of Current On Electron Temperature And Density, Mostafa Hemmati, Mathues Shane Doss

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

In our attempt to find analytical solutions for breakdown waves, we employ a set of three-component fluid equations. In addition to reporting the method of integration of electron fluid dynamical equations through the dynamical transition region (sheath region), the wave profile for ionization rate, electron number density and electron temperature inside the sheath will be discussed. Also, the effect of the current on electron temperature, electron number density and ionization rate will be reported.

Properties And Macromolecular Structure Of Unacetylated And Acetylated Nata De Coco, Ma. Assunta C. Cuyegkeng, Ma. Amy L. Dimalanta Jan 1997

Properties And Macromolecular Structure Of Unacetylated And Acetylated Nata De Coco, Ma. Assunta C. Cuyegkeng, Ma. Amy L. Dimalanta

Chemistry Faculty Publications

This study aims to gain more insight into the supramolecular structure of the cellulose in nata de coco, and to compare its ability to be modified with the known types of cellulose. The investigations were done using IR spectroscopy and thennal analysis. The IR spectra of microcrystalline cellulose were identical to cellulose spectra. However, those of dried nata de coco cellulose showed additional peaks that indicated a loss of inter- and intra-sheet hydrogen bonding, usually extensive in other cellulose forms where sheets are the prevalent secondary structures. This kind of structure would be consistent with the necessary framework for gel …

Privacy Issues Dealing With Technology : A Review Of The Literature, Kimberly S. Mccoy Jan 1997

Privacy Issues Dealing With Technology : A Review Of The Literature, Kimberly S. Mccoy

Graduate Research Papers

The sophisticated applications of technology are expanding everyday. Unfortunately, so are the many concerns individuals in society are having about their right to privacy. The actual regulations dealing with one's right to privacy has not expand as rapidly as the applications of technology. Individuals using various types of technology are under the assumption their activities are private; however, this is not the case. It does not seem to matter if you are using a computer for communications work, school, or in the "privacy" of your own home, there is absolutely no privacy when dealing with this type of technology.
