A Comparison Of Annealing Techniques For Academic Course Scheduling, M.A. Saleh Elmohamed, Geoffrey C. Fox, Paul Coddington Jan 1997

A Comparison Of Annealing Techniques For Academic Course Scheduling, M.A. Saleh Elmohamed, Geoffrey C. Fox, Paul Coddington

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

In this study we have tackled the NP-hard problem of academic class scheduling (or timetabling) at the university level. We have investigated a variety of approaches based on simulated annealing, including mean-field annealing, simulated annealing with three different cooling schedules, and the use of a rule-based preprocessor to provide a good initial solution for annealing. The best results were obtained using simulated annealing with adaptive cooling and reheating as a function of cost, and a rule-based preprocessor. This approach enabled us to obtain valid schedules for the timetabling problem for a large university, using a complex cost function that includes …

Random Number Generators For Parallel Computers, Paul D. Coddington Jan 1997

Random Number Generators For Parallel Computers, Paul D. Coddington

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

Random number generators are used in many applications, from slot machines to simulations of nuclear reactors. For many computational science applications, such as Monte Carlo simulation, it is crucial that the generators have good randomness properties. This is particularly true for large-scale simulations done on high-performance parallel computers. Good random number generators are hard to find, and many widely-used techniques have been shown to be inadequate. Finding high-quality, efficient algorithms for random number generation on parallel computers is even more difficult. Here we present a review of the most commonly-used random number generators for parallel computers, and evaluate each generator …

Expert System For The Generation Of A Work Breakdown Structure, Bernard O'Callaghan Jan 1997

Expert System For The Generation Of A Work Breakdown Structure, Bernard O'Callaghan

Theses

This thesis outlines research work carried out in the Mechanical & Manufacturing Department in Cork Regional Technical College, Ireland. With computers now having an increasingly dominant role in all areas of business, it was inevitable that computer-based project management packages would become more popular. To date however, these packages have concentrated on monitoring and controlling projects. The definition and brainstorming phases required to generate a project plan are still largely manual tasks. Planning a project initially involves generating a complete and organised list of all the tasks needing to be completed in order to achieve a project’s goal. This list …

The Treatment Of Vegetable Processing Waste Water Using A Pilot Scale Sequencing Batch Reactor Activated Sludge Process, Peter Hassett Jan 1997

The Treatment Of Vegetable Processing Waste Water Using A Pilot Scale Sequencing Batch Reactor Activated Sludge Process, Peter Hassett

Theses

The SBR process is a discontinuous, unsteady state process and has developed popularity in many countries assisted by reliable control technology for example programmable logic control. A typical SBR installation achieves equalisation, aeration and clarification of batches of wastewater on a timed sequence in one basin. This is in contrast to a volume sequenced process such as the conventional continuous stirred tank reactor where individual treatment objectives are met in separate basins. Advantages include, flexability, minimum energy input, consistent effluent quality and inhibition of filament organism growth by properly controlling substrate concentration and aeration sequences. Nitrification, denitrification and Bio-P removal …

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (Pah) Distributions Within Urban Estuarine Sediments, Siddhartha Mitra Jan 1997

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (Pah) Distributions Within Urban Estuarine Sediments, Siddhartha Mitra

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Sediments and pore waters from two urban estuaries ranging in sediment mixing energy were studied to evaluate the potential release of contaminants from particles during sediment diagenesis. Two sites in Elizabeth River, VA and two tributaries in the Hudson River Watershed were sampled for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Sediment age, total sediment organic carbon (TOC), carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratios, and particle surface area (SA) were also sampled at these sites. In the Elizabeth River, both sites sampled (Site 1 and Site 2) have been non-depositional for the past 70 y or are comprised of old dredge spoil. PAH K&\sp\prime\sb{lcub}\rm …

The crystal structure of the title compound, [CoCl2(C5H8N2Se)2], shows a discrete molecular structure with tetrahedral geometry around the cobalt ion. The mean Co-Cl and Co-Se distances are 2.277 (3) and 2.456 (3) Å, respectively. Bond angles around the Co atom range from 101.1 (1) to 120.0 (1)°. Ring distances and angles in the ligand compare favorably with the literature values of analogous compounds, and show significant increases from values observed in the uncoordinated selone. However, the mean C-Se bond distance of 1.88 (2) Å shows no significant difference from the …

Runoff Quality Responses To Cattle-Gazing Strategy And Grassed Buffer Zone Length, Dwayne R. Edwards, Brian T. Larsen, Teng T. Lim Jan 1997

Runoff Quality Responses To Cattle-Gazing Strategy And Grassed Buffer Zone Length, Dwayne R. Edwards, Brian T. Larsen, Teng T. Lim

KWRRI Research Reports

Grazed pastures represent a source of potential nonpoint pollution. In comparison to other nonpoint sources (e.g., row-cropped lands), relatively little information exists regarding possible magnitudes of pollution from grazed pasture; how that pollution is affected by weather, soil, management and other variables; and how the pollution can be minimized. The objective of this study was to assess how the quality of runoff from simulated grazed pasture is influenced by grazing duration (4-12 weeks), grazing strategy (no grazing, conventional grazing and rotational grazing), and by the use of grassed buffer strips (ranging in length from O to 18.3 m) installed down-slope …

Chronology Of Holocene Tsunamis On The Southeastern Coast Of Australia, R. W. Young, Edward A. Bryant, David M. Price, S. Y. Dilek, D. J. Wheeler Jan 1997

Chronology Of Holocene Tsunamis On The Southeastern Coast Of Australia, R. W. Young, Edward A. Bryant, David M. Price, S. Y. Dilek, D. J. Wheeler

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Recent research has revealed much geomorphological evidence for major tsunamis on the southeastern coast of Australia prior to British settlement in 1788. This discovery is important because this tectonically very stable coast was believed to be safe from the hazard of tsunamis because no major tsunami has occurred here in the last 200 years. But high level marine deposits of Holocene age along the coast south of Sydney show that tsunamis ran up to heights of >30 m, and at one site to heights probably >100 m. Developing a chronology for these catastrophic events is of great importance to the …

Discrete-Event Modelling, Simulation And Control Of A Distributed Manipulation Environment, Fazel Naghdy, N. Anjum Jan 1997

Discrete-Event Modelling, Simulation And Control Of A Distributed Manipulation Environment, Fazel Naghdy, N. Anjum

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Conventional robotics has proved to be inflexible and non-generic. The concept of Distributed Manipulation Environment (DME) is introduced to overcome some of these shortcomings. This concept proposes a distributed approach to robotics and flexible automation. The work is concerned with modelling, simulation and event based control of DME. The modelling, conducted both at the atomic and the coupled level, is quite generic and provides a framework for static and dynamic behaviour analysis of DME systems. The simulation models serve as a mean of performance evaluation of the system on a computer before the actual implementation in real time. The event-based …

On The Smith Normal Form Of Weighing Matrices, Christos Koukouvinos, C. Mitrouli, Jennifer Seberry

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

The Smith normal forms (SNF) of weighing matrices are studied. We show that for all orders n ≥ 35 the full spectrum of Smith normal forms (SNF) exists for weighing matrices W(n,9) ie there exists a W(n,9) with SNF 11/2(n-s)3s91/2(n-s), for s in a set, which is described, of consecutive integers.

Forest Research In Iowa's State Parks - The Values Of Natural Diversity, Donald R. Farrar Jan 1997

Forest Research In Iowa's State Parks - The Values Of Natural Diversity, Donald R. Farrar

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Approximately 3% of Iowa's forests are contained in state parks and preserves. In addition to aesthetics and recreation, these protected forests provide a vital service in the unique opportunities they provide for forest research. As intact ecosystems where natural ecological processes dominate, they provide standards by which we measure the effects of livestock pasturing, methods of timber harvest, and other manipulations of managed forests. A number of current studies and public programs emphasize the importance of natural diversity in forests. They rely on state parks and preserves to provide a measure of potential diversity for a given region of the …

Helminth Ova Recovered From Raptors Admitted For Rehabilitation, Shawn Hawks, Rick Klann Jan 1997

Helminth Ova Recovered From Raptors Admitted For Rehabilitation, Shawn Hawks, Rick Klann

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Fecal samples from 34 raptors admitted for rehabilitation were examined for helminth ova. All 34 birds, representing 13 different species, passed helminth ova in their feces. Six different types of helminth ova were identified, including strigeid trematode, cestode, Capillaria, Porrocaecum, Ascaridia and spiurid nematode. From this study, it appears that helminths, particularly tapeworms, are common parasites of raptors.

The Contributions Of J. A. Udden To An Understanding Of Iowa Geology, Richard C. Anderson Jan 1997

The Contributions Of J. A. Udden To An Understanding Of Iowa Geology, Richard C. Anderson

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Johan August Udden served on the faculty of Augustana College from 1888 until 1911. His research during that time was directed toward an understanding of the geology of areas close at hand, the region around Rock Island and nearby areas in Iowa and Illinois. Udden's most significant contributions to Iowa geology were in his treatment of 1) Paleozoic, Cretaceous, and Quaternary stratigraphy; 2) subsurface geology, including information on bedrock elevations and topography; 3) characteristics and origin of the loess. Most of this information was included in the Annual Reports of the Iowa Geological Survey published between 1899 and 1903. He …

Fungal Colonization Of Alfalfa Stubble Following Harvest, J. K. O'Mara, G. P. Munkvold Jan 1997

Fungal Colonization Of Alfalfa Stubble Following Harvest, J. K. O'Mara, G. P. Munkvold

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Two-year-old stands of alfalfa cultivars Saranac and Vernal, planted in Central Iowa, were sampled 0, 15, and 30 days after the first harvest in 1995 to identify fungi colonizing the stubble left after harvest and evaluate the role of harvest-induced wounds as infection sites for potential crown-rotting fungi. Analysis of variance was conducted to determine if sampling date and cultivar significantly affected incidence of the fungi. All stems were infected with at least one fungal species at every sampling dare. The fungal genera most frequently isolated were Alternaria, Colletotrichum, Fusarium, Phoma, and Rhizoctonia. Fusarium acuminatum was the most frequently isolated …

Carnivorous Spadefoot (Spea Bombifrons Cope) Tadpoles And Fairy Shrimp In Western Iowa, Eugenia S. Farrar, Jane D. Hey Jan 1997

Carnivorous Spadefoot (Spea Bombifrons Cope) Tadpoles And Fairy Shrimp In Western Iowa, Eugenia S. Farrar, Jane D. Hey

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Amphibian larval polymorphisms, rarely found in the Midwest, are more common in arid western regions. We have discovered that Plains spadefoot toad, Spea bombifrons Cope, tadpoles occur as carnivorous and omnivorous morphological forms in flooded soybean and corn fields on the Missouri River flood plain of western Iowa. Carnivores have longer snouts, larger beaks with an upper cusp and lower notch, shorter intestines with fewer loops than the omnivores, and they feed on fairy shrimp. A similar polymorphism in Spea multiplicata Cope enhances survival in the desert because the carnivore develops faster after consuming fairy shrimp and is able to …

A Search For Average, Extremes, And Runs Of Unusual Weather In Iowa, R. E. Carlson, D. P. Todey

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Temperature and precipitation during the past decade have exhibited wide variation throughout Iowa. Is this unusual? An attempt was made to answer this question by computing various statistical parameters that characterize variation in Iowa's long term climatic record. Absolute deviations were used to identify the most and least variable months and years since 1900. Overall, 1936 with a very cold winter and very warm summer was the least normal year. Runs of daily weather showed that heat and cold stress could often persist for more than 1 month. Runs of dry days were much longer than runs of wet days. …
