Glycals : An Extended Study Of The Ferrier-Dimerization, Andreas H. Franz
Glycals : An Extended Study Of The Ferrier-Dimerization, Andreas H. Franz
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
C-linked disaccharides were synthesized from 3,4,6-tri-O-acetyl-D-glucal 1 (1,5- anhydro-3,4,6-tri-O-acetyl-1,2-dideoxy-D-arabino-hex-I-enopyranose), 3,4,6-tri-O- acetyl-D-galactal 2 (1,5-anhydro-3,4,6-tri-O-acetyl-1,2-dideoxy-D-lyxo-hex-1- enopyranose) and 3,4-di-O-acetyl-L-fucal 3 (1,5-anhydro-3,4-di-O-acetyl-1,2,6-tri-deoxy- L-lyxo-hex-1-enopyranose) under Lewis acid catalysis (Scheme 1) and compound 4 was further derivatized at the double bond. Dihydroxylation of the glucose dimer 4 gave high allo-diastereoselectivity. The reactions used in the derivatization of 1 were subsequently applied to 2 and 3. The overall yield of 3 was improved to 70 %. All three glycals (10% solution in toluene) reacted quickly with boron trifluoride to give dimerization products in 40-60% yield. Futile attempts at de-O-acetylation of the 2',3'-unsaturated dimer revealed the necessity of …

Varietal Differences In The Total And Enantiomeric Composition Of Theanine In Tea, K. Helen Ekborg-Ott, Andre Taylor, Daniel W. Armstrong
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Theanine is the main amino acid component in tea. It usually constitutes between 1 and 2% of the dry weight of the tea leaves. It is as prevalent in tea as all other free amino acids combined. Both enantiomers of theanine were found to have a similar sweet taste, with little or no aftertaste. It was found that black and half-green teas (except for Formosa Oolong) contained as much, or more, theanine as green teas. No correlation was found between the absolute concentration of theanine in tea and its enantiomeric composition. An inverse correlation was found between certain grades of …

Solid-Phase Extraction Method For The Quantitative Analysis Of Organochlorine Pesticides In Wildlife Urine, E. E. Petty, J . J . Johnston, S.A. Volz
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
A gas chromatographic method for the analysis of nine organochlorine pesticides in wildlife urine is described. Reversedphase solid-phase extraction is utilized to extract the organochlorine pesticides from urine. The pesticides are recovered by elution with hexane-ethyl ether (1:1) and quantified by gas chromatography with electron-capture detection. Method detection limits range from 1.4 to 2.7 μg/L. Mean recoveries for all pesticides are 90.6%.

Compensation Programs For Wildlife Damage In North America, Kimberly K. Wagner, Robert H. Schmidt, Michael R. Conover
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Financial compensation for damages caused by wildlife is an alternative to lethal wildlife damage management techniques, but little is known about the use of these programs in North America. We conducted surveys requesting information on wildlife species and type of damage covered by compensation programs, annual cost of programs, and the monitoring and assessment of program success to the wildlife agencies of all states and Canadian provinces. We also requested information on programs providing producers with damage-abatement materials instead of or in addition to financial compensation. All states and provinces responded to our survey. Nineteen states and 7 provinces had …
Estimating Survival Of Song Bird Carcasses In Crops And Woodlots, George M. Linz, David L. Bergman, William J. Bleier
Estimating Survival Of Song Bird Carcasses In Crops And Woodlots, George M. Linz, David L. Bergman, William J. Bleier
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Estimates of non-target animal mortality due to the effects of agricultural pesticides may be biased by the removal of carcasses by scavengers. We placed intact songbird carcasses in ripening sunflower fields in late-summer, and in harvested corn fields and woodlots in early spring to assess carcass removal by scavengers. Removal curves differed among the three habitats (P < 0.001). One day after placement, 58% of carcasses persisted in the sunflower fields, whereas 82% and 90% remained in the corn fields and woodlots, respectively. Our results suggest that survival times for carcasses are variable and dependent on habitat and, perhaps seasonal factors. In most cases, searches for carcasses should be conducted within one day of the pesticide application.

Nearly Synchronous Climate Change In The Northern Hemisphere During The Last Glacial Termination, Larry V. Benson, James Burdett, Steve Lund, Michaele Kashgarian, Scott Mensing
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The climate of the North Atlantic region underwent a series of abrupt cold/warm oscillations when the ice sheets of the Northern Hemisphere retreated during the last glacial termination (17,700–11,500 years ago). Evidence for these oscillations, which are recorded in European terrestrial sediments as the Oldest Dryas/Bølling/ Older Dryas/Allerød/Younger Dryas vegetational sequence, has been found in Greenland ice cores. The geographical extent of many of these oscillations is not well known, but the last major cold event (the Younger Dryas) seems to have been global in extent. Here we present evidence of four major oscillations in the hydrological balance of the …

Point And Line Disclinations In Models Of The Blue Phases, Peter J. Collings
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works
The model of the liquid crystalline blue phases proposed by Alfred Saupe in 1969 is examined in light of the recent, successful theoretical models for these phases. Such an analysis demonstrates that Saupe's model captures all of the important features of the recent models, differing only in the density of line disclinations. The fact that Saupe proposed this model over ten years before the more recent work and without the benefit of a significant amout of new experimental evidence is testimony for his keen physical insight. Such models continue to be useful as researchers direct their attention to the less …
The Use Of Prime Numbers As An Effective Method Of Cryptology, Joshua Flynn
The Use Of Prime Numbers As An Effective Method Of Cryptology, Joshua Flynn
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
With the increasing amount of information transmitted over networks, there is a need to be able to keep this information from falling into the wrong hands. The method that has been used for the past couple of decades is that of cryptography. This paper gives an explanation of cryptography, as well as different alogorithms that are used to solve the problem. One unique thing about a couple of the algorithms is that they use properties provided by prime numbers. In particular, the RSA model, invented by Rivest, Shamir and Adelman, is one model which utilizes the theory that it is …

Acidity Studies Of Deuterated Acids And Bases Commonly Used As Buffers In Nmr Studies, Rose M. Mcconnell, Walter E. Godwin, Brant Stanley, M. Shane Green
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Structure based drug development is currently considered to be an important strategy for drug discovery. This strategy requires that critical knowledge of the three dimensional binding site on receptor molecules be known. NMR studies are frequently employed to ascertain important structural data on individual proteins as well as complexes of proteins with ligands. Deuterium labeled acids and bases are frequently used as buffers in deuterium oxide solutions for NMR studies on the structural conformations of bioactive molecules. Since pH is an important factor in any study of the conformational and stereochemical aspects of biologically active molecules, deuterated buffers are an …
