Point And Line Disclinations In Models Of The Blue Phases, Peter J. Collings Jan 1997

Point And Line Disclinations In Models Of The Blue Phases, Peter J. Collings

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

The model of the liquid crystalline blue phases proposed by Alfred Saupe in 1969 is examined in light of the recent, successful theoretical models for these phases. Such an analysis demonstrates that Saupe's model captures all of the important features of the recent models, differing only in the density of line disclinations. The fact that Saupe proposed this model over ten years before the more recent work and without the benefit of a significant amout of new experimental evidence is testimony for his keen physical insight. Such models continue to be useful as researchers direct their attention to the less …

The Use Of Prime Numbers As An Effective Method Of Cryptology, Joshua Flynn Jan 1997

The Use Of Prime Numbers As An Effective Method Of Cryptology, Joshua Flynn

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

With the increasing amount of information transmitted over networks, there is a need to be able to keep this information from falling into the wrong hands. The method that has been used for the past couple of decades is that of cryptography. This paper gives an explanation of cryptography, as well as different alogorithms that are used to solve the problem. One unique thing about a couple of the algorithms is that they use properties provided by prime numbers. In particular, the RSA model, invented by Rivest, Shamir and Adelman, is one model which utilizes the theory that it is …

Acidity Studies Of Deuterated Acids And Bases Commonly Used As Buffers In Nmr Studies, Rose M. Mcconnell, Walter E. Godwin, Brant Stanley, M. Shane Green

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Structure based drug development is currently considered to be an important strategy for drug discovery. This strategy requires that critical knowledge of the three dimensional binding site on receptor molecules be known. NMR studies are frequently employed to ascertain important structural data on individual proteins as well as complexes of proteins with ligands. Deuterium labeled acids and bases are frequently used as buffers in deuterium oxide solutions for NMR studies on the structural conformations of bioactive molecules. Since pH is an important factor in any study of the conformational and stereochemical aspects of biologically active molecules, deuterated buffers are an …

Nc-P-Groups Satisfying The Normalizer Condition, Ali Osman Asar Jan 1997

Nc-P-Groups Satisfying The Normalizer Condition, Ali Osman Asar

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let G be a perfect locally nilpotent p-group in which every proper subgroup is nilpotent-by-Chernikov. It is shown that in G/Z(G) every proper subgroup is a Chernikov extension of a nilpotent subgroup Of finite exponent (Theorem 1). This resut is then used to give a characterization of G if, in addition, it satisfies the normalizer condition (Theorem 2).

How Much Ecological Information Is Preserved In Fossil Coral Reefs And How Reliable Is It?, B. J. Greenstein, H. Allen Curran

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

The coral reef fossil record is the exclusive database from which analyses of the response of coral communities to environmental change over geological time scales may be gauged. However, few studies have attempted to ascertain whether the reef fossil record is a reasonably accurate representation of a once living coral community. To address this issue, we have performed a systematic comparison of the taxonomic composition and diversity present in exposure of Pleistocene patch reef and reef tract facies found in the Bahamas to that observed for life and death assemblages currently present in analogous modern reefs of the Florida Keys. …

Guide To Bahamian Ichnology: Pleistocene, Holocene, And Modern Environments: A Field Trip Guide, H. Allen Curran, Brian White, Mark A. Wilson

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

This guide was prepared for the Fourth International Ichnofabric Workshop (IIW- 4) to be hosted by the Bahamian Field Station and held on San Salvador Island on March 15-22, 1997. About 35 scientists representing 15 countries are registered to attend the workshop.

The focus of discussion in the infonnal scientific sessions will be the uses of ichnofabric analysis in sedimentary geology. An ichnofabric is the texture or internal structure created within a sedimentary substrate from the bioturbating activity of organisms. Ichnofabric analysis is a new and emerging area of ichnology (the study of trace fossils), and its methods are proving …

Calcium Metabolismn In Volvox Carteri, Bridget Anne Neville Jan 1997

Calcium Metabolismn In Volvox Carteri, Bridget Anne Neville

Honors Theses

Calcium metabolism is involved in many ways in the cellular activities of the colonial green alga, Volvox carteri. Various drugs that are known in other systems to cause specific changes in calcium metabolism, gave rise to various visible metabolic effects in this study. These effects provide evidence for calcium's role in Volvox growth and development and in its cytoskeleton. Another way that calcium exerts its effect on Volvox is by acting as a second messenger in a G-protein/inositol phosphate signal transduction pathway.

This study also supports the fact that cytoskeletal components are important for development in Volvox. Both microtubules and …

Spectroscopic And Kinetic Studies Of Bismuth Dimers, Robert Eugene Frankin Jan 1997

Spectroscopic And Kinetic Studies Of Bismuth Dimers, Robert Eugene Frankin

Theses and Dissertations

The spectroscopy of high rotational levels (J ≤ 211) in Bi2 X(Og+) and A(Ou+) was investigated for 2≤v"≤5 and 0≤v'≤4 by observing total fluorescence from laser excitation. Dunham coefficients were derived that fit all observed rotational lines to within 0.01 cm-1. Franck-Condon factors were calculated and experimentally verified for transitions originating from the initially populated levels 0≤v'≤5. Vibrational energy transfer upon collision with rare gas collision partners was investigated for the low-lying vibrational levels of the A-state using spectrally resolved, continuous wave laser induced fluorescence. Vibrational transfer was adequately modeled by …

Construction Of Gold Micro-Bead Ultramicroelectrodes, Deon T. Miles, Andrew Knedlik, David O. Wipf Jan 1997

Construction Of Gold Micro-Bead Ultramicroelectrodes, Deon T. Miles, Andrew Knedlik, David O. Wipf

College of Arts and Sciences Publications and Scholarship

A new way to construct small electrodes by the use of metal micro-beads is described. Gold beads of 1.5 to 3.0 mm diameter were used to construct inexpensive and disposable microelectrodes with overall structural diameters of £ 6 mm and electrode diameters of £ 5 mm. The voltammetric response of these electrodes is consistent with existing theory and the electrodes exhibited the sigmoidal waves expected at ultramicroelectrodes.

The Significance Of E. A. Martel For Speleology In Slovenia, Andrej Kranjc Jan 1997

The Significance Of E. A. Martel For Speleology In Slovenia, Andrej Kranjc

International Journal of Speleology

Three times Martel visited karst in Carniola: in 1879, 1893 and 1896. The importance of his visits and later publications lies in fact that he informed the francophone public about our karst and caves; his visit stimulated the introduction of new technical means into the then Austrian speleology (folding boat, portable telephone); in 1893 due to his researches Postojnska jama became the longest cave in Europe; public found out about existence of caving society Anthron, which was the first Slovene and Slav society of the kind; he set up the foundations of international speleological co-operation and included into it Austrian …

Hoffman’S Error Bounds And Uniform Lipschitz Continuity Of Best L(P) -Approximations, H. Berens, M. Finzel, W. Li, Y. Xu

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

In a central paper on smoothness of best approximation in 1968 R. Holmes and B. Kripke proved among others that on ℝn, endowed with the lρ-norm, 1< p < ∞, the metric projection onto a given linear subspace is Lipschitz continuous where the Lipschitz constant depended on the parameter p. Using Hoffman’s Error Bounds as a principal tool we prove uniform Lipschitz continuity of best lρ -ap- proximations. As a consequence, we reprove and prove, respectively, Lipschitz. continuity of the strict best approximation (sba, p = ∞ and of the natural best approximation (nba, p = 1.
