Age And Growth Of Larval And Juvenile Atlantic Croaker, Micropogonias Undulatus, From The Middle Atlantic Bight And Estuarine Waters Of Virginia, Stephen W. Nixon, Cynthia M. Jones

OES Faculty Publications

Sagittal otoliths were used to determine age and growth of 605 larval and juvenile Atlantic croaker, Micropogonias undulatus, collected in the Middle Atlantic Bight and estuarine waters of Virginia. This study is the first to use age-based analysis for young Atlantic croaker collected in this region. A Laird-Gompertz model (r2=0.95) was used to describe the growth of Atlantic croaker up to 65 mm standard length (SL) and 142 days (t): SL((t)) = 2.657 exp (4.656 [1-exp (-0.0081t)]); where SL((t)) = standard length at day t. Spatial and temporal patterns in the size and age of Atlantic croaker showed a …

Response Of Otolith Microchemistry To Environmental Variations Experienced By Larval And Juvenile Atlantic Croaker (Micropogonias Undulatus), Simon R. Thorrold, Cynthia M. Jones, Steven E. Campana

OES Faculty Publications

Minor and trace elements incorporated into otoliths during growth may permanently record environmental conditions experienced by fishes. To determine the validity of this approach, we used laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) to assay sectioned otoliths from juvenile Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulatus) collected from each of three sites in the Neuse River, North Carolina, and the Elizabeth River, Virginia. Elemental concentrations at the center of the otoliths did not differ between locations, although both Mg : Ca and Ba : Ca were significantly higher at the edge of otoliths from the Neuse River than from the …

Small-Scale Settlement Patterns Of The Oyster Crassostrea Virginica On A Constructed Intertidal Reef, Ian K. Bartol, Roger Mann Jan 1997

Small-Scale Settlement Patterns Of The Oyster Crassostrea Virginica On A Constructed Intertidal Reef, Ian K. Bartol, Roger Mann

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The construction of three-dimensional, intertidal reefs resembling those widely present during colonial times in the Chesapeake Bay, but now absent due to years of overharvesting, may provide a more ecologically advantageous environment for oyster settlement and subsequent survival than present subtidal, two-dimensional habitats. We examined settlement processes on a constructed, 210 x 30 m intertidal reef composed of oyster shell. The reef was destructively and non-destructively sampled weekly throughout the summer and fall at tidal heights ranging from 30 cm above to 90 cm below mean low water (MLW) and at two substrate levels (reef surface and 10 cm below …

Complex Conjugation Equivariant Topology Of Complex Surfaces, Sergey Finashin Jan 1997

Complex Conjugation Equivariant Topology Of Complex Surfaces, Sergey Finashin

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Suppose X is a non-singular complex surface defined over \R, which is a complete intersection constructed by the method of a small perturbation, and Y=X/\conj is its quotient by the complex conjugation \conj\: X\to X. Assume that \conj has a fixed point. Then Y is completely decomposable, i.e., splits into a connected sum \#_n \Cp^2\#_m\barCP^2 or \#_n(S^2\!\times\! S^2).

A (--86)-Sphere In The K3 Surface, Sergey Finashin, Grigory Mikhalkin Jan 1997

A (--86)-Sphere In The K3 Surface, Sergey Finashin, Grigory Mikhalkin

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Consider the self-intersection number [\Sigma].[\Sigma] of a 2-dimensional sphere \Sigma embedded into a K3 surface. Since a K3 surface is spin, [\Sigma].[\Sigma] is even and by Gauge theoretical arguments [\Sigma].[\Sigma]\le 0. No other restriction on [\Sigma].[\Sigma] is known. It is a problem 4.105(D) from the Kirby list \cite{K} to determine the possible values of [\Sigma].[\Sigma]. This paper shows that the even numbers between 0 and -86 do appear as [\Sigma].[\Sigma].

About Some Normal Subgroups Of Hecke Groups, İsmail Naci Cangül

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this work we study the suucture of some special normal subgroups of Hecke groups. Particwarly those of genus O and 1 are studied by means of the regwar map theory which has been a growing subject in recent years. As a nice application, we calcwate the total number of genus 1 normal subgroups for a given index.

The Hardy -Littlewood-Sobolev Inequality For Non-Isotropic Riesz Potentials, İnan Çinar Jan 1997

The Hardy -Littlewood-Sobolev Inequality For Non-Isotropic Riesz Potentials, İnan Çinar

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this study the inequality of Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev type are established for non-isotropic generalized Riesz potential depending on \lambda -distance. In this paper we establish analogues of the well known Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality (see[3]) for Riesz potentials with non-isotropic kernel depended on \lambda distance. Note that different problems for convolution type integrals with kernels, depending on \lambda-distance were considered in [1] and [2].

Locally Topological Groupoids, Osman Mucuk

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The notion of Iocally topological groupoid was introduced by Aof and Brown in [2]. On the other hand in [6] by Mackenzie a topological groupoid MG, called monodromy groupoid, is constructed. In this paper we prove that this groupoid MG gives a Iocally topological groupoid.

Differentiable Functions And The Generators On A Hilbert-Lie Group, Erdal Coşkun Jan 1997

Differentiable Functions And The Generators On A Hilbert-Lie Group, Erdal Coşkun

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

A convolution semigroup plays an important role İn the theory of probability measure on Lie groups. The basic problem is that one wants to express a semigroup as a Lévy-Khinckine formula. If (\mu_t)_{t\epsilonR*_+} is a continuous semigroup of probability + measures on a Hilbert-Lie group G, then we define T{\mu_t}f:=\integral f_a\mu_t(da) (f\epsilonC_u(G),t>0 It is apparent that (\mu_t)_t{t\epsilonR*_+} is a contİnuous operator semigroup on the space + C_u ( G) with the İnfinitesimal generator N. The generatİng functional A of this semigroup is defined by Aƒ := Iim_t-->0 1/t(T_{\mu_t}f(e) - f(e). We have the problem of consliuction of a …

On The Curves Of Constant Breadth In E^4 Space, Abdullah Mağden, Ömer Köse

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, the concepts concerning the space curves of constant breadth were extended to E^4 -space. The integral of third curvature of the curve was obtained as (bak) \sigmads = 2k7\pi(k E Z) . In addition, the relation (bak) g(\kappa, \tau, \sigma)ds = O was obtained between the curvatures of curves of constant breadth in E^4 . Key words and phrases: Curvature, Constant Breadth, Integral characterization of Curve, Spherical Curves.

Painlevé Analysis And Infinite Lie Symmetries Of The Complex Modified Korteweg-De Vries-Ii Equation, Abulgassim Ali Muhammad, Mehmet Can Jan 1997

Painlevé Analysis And Infinite Lie Symmetries Of The Complex Modified Korteweg-De Vries-Ii Equation, Abulgassim Ali Muhammad, Mehmet Can

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The Painleve analysis developed by Weiss et al. [9] for nonlinear partial differential equations is applied to the CMKdV-II equation. It has been shown that this equation passes the Painleve test. By specializing the arbitrary functions that appear in the phi series expansions found in the test, one obtains a system of partial differential equations for the formally arbitrary data. For specific systems, and conjectured in general, these equations are integrable. The form of the resulting reduction enables the identification of integrable reductions of the original systems. Assuming u_i = \upsilon_i = 0, i >= 2 we obtain conditions to …

Certain Meromorphically Starlike Functions With Positive And Fixed Second Coefficients, M. K. Aouf, H. E. Darwish

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper we consider the class \SigmaS*{_o,c} ( \alpha ) consisting of meromorphically starlike univalent functions with positive coefficients and fixed second coefficients. The object of the present paper is to show coefficient estimates and closure theorems for this class. Also, we obtain the radius of convexity for functions belonging to the class \SigmaS*{_o,c} ( \alpha ).

Unique Factorisation For Commutative Rings Without Identity, A. G. Ağargün, C.R. Fletcher Jan 1997

Unique Factorisation For Commutative Rings Without Identity, A. G. Ağargün, C.R. Fletcher

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

This paper concerns the unique factorisation property in commutative rings not necessarily with identity. We give a new definition of irreducibility and associates in a commutative ring with 1 (crwl), and define a UFR R in terms of a monomorphism from R into a crwl. This becomes equivalent to the definition in [3] when R has an identity. We generalize results on direct sums and direct summands. By our definition we have new members of the family of UFR's.

Some Commutativity Properties For Rings With Unity, Hamza A.S. Abujabal

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we prove the commutativity of a ring R with unity satisfying one of the following ring properties: (P_1) For each x, y in R, {1- h(yx^r)}[x,yx^r - f(yx^r)]{1-g(yx^r)}=0 for some (P_2) Given x, y in R, {1- h(yx^r)} [x,yx^r - f(x^ry)] {1-g(yx^r)}=0 and {1-~h(xy^r)}[y,y^rx-~f(xy^r)]{1-~g(xy^r)}=0 for some f(X),~f(X)\epsilonX^2Z[X] and g(X), ~g(X), h(X), ~h(X)\epsilonXZ[X]. (P_3) For each x, y \epsilon R, [x, yx^r - x^sf(y)x^t]=0 for some f(X)\epsilon X^2Z[X].

On Hill's Equation With Piecewise Constant Coefficient, I. Yaslan, G.Sh. Guseinov

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper the eigenvalues of the periodic and the semi-periodic boundary value problems associated with Hill's equation are investigated in the case of piecewise constant coefficient. As a corollary the asymptotic formula for the lengths of the instability intervals of Hill's equation is derived and it is shown that they increase beyond all bounds. Also, the conditions for coexistence of periodic and semi-periodic solutions are indicated.

Quotients Of Real Algebraic Sets Via Finite Groups, Yıldıray Ozan Jan 1997

Quotients Of Real Algebraic Sets Via Finite Groups, Yıldıray Ozan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we will study finite algebraic group actions on real algebraic sets and compare the topological quotient X/G with the algebraic quotient X/ /G. We will give a different and shorter proof of a result of Procesi and Schwarz, stating that if the order of the group G, acting algebraically on a real algebraic set X, is odd then X/G is equal to X/ /G. In the case of even order groups, we will a give sufficient condition ( and a necessary condition in the case G = Z_2 ) for the X / G to be equal …
