Using high‐precision stepwise‐heating 40Ar/39Ar methods, we dated volcanic products of at least 12 vents cropping out along the northern segment of the Mesa Butte Fault in the San Francisco Volcanic Field, Arizona, where the relationship between fault and vent alignment is unambiguous. The 40Ar/39Ar isochron dates indicate that the Mesa Butte Fault hosted five episodes of volcanism over a 1 million year interval, from 1400 to 300 ka. The first episode occurred 1 km northwest of the trace of the Mesa Butte Fault, whereas the next two episodes were centered near the intersection of the Mesa Butte and Cedar Ranch …

N-Methylbenzothiazole-2(3H)-Selone, C8H7Nsse, Steinar Husebye, Sergey V. Lindeman, Martin D. Rudd

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The crystal structure of N-methyl1,3-benzothiazole-2(3H)-selone, (mbts) has been studied to estimate the changes in the molecular geometry of the mbts ligand upon coordination. Hypervalent complexes of mbts with TeII and II have been studied by us previously. A significant elongation of the Se=C bond [from 1.817 (7) in mbts to 1.85-1.88 Å in the complexes] was found, but there were no significant changes in the other geometric parameters of the ligand. The only other bond-length decrease of note was for SeC-NMe [from 1.35 (1) in mbts to 1.32-1.34 Å in the complexes]. Thus, only the …

Using the ZEUS detector at the HERA electron-proton collider, we have searched for lepton flavor violation in ep collisions at a center-of-mass energy (√s) of 300 GeV. Events of the type e + p → ℓ + X with a final-state lepton of high transverse momentum, ℓ = μ or τ, were sought. No evidence was found for lepton flavor violation in the combined 1993 and 1994 data samples, for which the integrated luminosities were 0.84 pb-1 for e-p collisions and 2.94 pb-1 for e+p collisions. Limits on coupling vs. mass are provided for leptoquarks and R-parity violating squarks. For …

The differential cross section dσ/dt for elastic ρ0 photoproduction, γp → ρ0ρ (ρ0 → π+π-), has been measured in ep interactions at HERA. The squared four-momentum exchanged at the proton vertex, t, has been determined directly by measuring the momentum of the scattered proton using the ZEUS Leading Proton Spectrometer (LPS), a large scale system of silicon micro-strip detectors operating close to the HERA proton beam. The LPS allows the measurement of the momentum of high energy protons scattered at small angles with accuracies of 0.4% for the longitudinal momentum and 5 MeV for the transverse momentum. Photoproduction of ρ0 …

The reaction γ p → J/ψ p has been studied in ep interactions using the ZEUS detector at HERA. The cross section for elastic J/ψ photoproduction has been measured as a function of the photon-proton centre of mass energy W in the range 40 < W < 140 GeV at a median photon virtuality Q2 of 5 × 10-5 GeV2. The photoproduction cross section, σγp→J/ψp, is observed to rise steeply with W. A fit to the data presented in this paper to determine the parameter δ in the form σγp→J/ψp α Wδ yields the value δ = 0.92±0.14±0.10. The differential cross section dσ/d|t| is presented over the range |t| < 1.0 GeV2 where t is the square of the four-momentum exchanged at the proton vertex. dσ/d|t| falls exponentially with a slope parameter of 4.6 ± 0.4-0.6+0.4 GeV-2. The measured decay angular distributions are consistent with s-channel helicity conservation. © Springer-Verlag 1997.

Focus Catchments : A New Approach To Salinity Research : National Dryland Salinity Program, Steve Porritt Jan 1997

Focus Catchments : A New Approach To Salinity Research : National Dryland Salinity Program, Steve Porritt

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Dry/and salinity is a major threat to the resource base of many rural industries around Australia. More than 1.8 million hectares of once productive land are affected by salinity, with a further 1.6 million hectares at risk in the next 15 to 25 years in Western Australia alone. Much of the past Commonwealth and State expenditure on salinity programs and activities has been poorly targeted and coordinated. In view of this, a national dry/and salinity program that supports specific State salinity management programs has been established jointly between the Commonwealth and State government agencies.

A Lower Bound Of The First Eigenvalue Of Certain Self-Adjoint Elliptic Operators On Manifolds Containing Long Necks, Weimin Chen

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this note, under certain regularity and transversality conditions we obtain a sharp lower bound of the first eigenvalue for certain self-adjoint elliptic operators on manifolds with long necks. This result is used in the gluing construction of 3-dimensional Seiberg-Witten moduli spaces along T^2. See [C1], [C2].

Kirby Calculus In Manifolds With Boundary, Justin Roberts Jan 1997

Kirby Calculus In Manifolds With Boundary, Justin Roberts

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Suppose there are two framed links in a compact, connected 3-manifold (possibly with boundary, or non-orientable) such that the associated 3-manifolds obtained by surgery are homeomorphic (relative to their common boundary, if there is one.) How are the links related? Kirby's theorem gives the answer when the manifold is S^3, and Fenn and Rourke extended it to the case of any closed orientable 3-manifold, or S^1 \tilde{\times} S^2. The purpose of this note is to give the answer in the general case, using only minor modifications of Kirby's original proof.

The Rank And The Crank Modulo 5, A. Bülent Eki̇n Jan 1997

The Rank And The Crank Modulo 5, A. Bülent Eki̇n

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let p(n) denote the number of partitions of n . Ramanujan's partition congruences are p(5n + 4) , p(7n + 5) and p(11n + 6) = mod 5, 7, and 11, respectively. These have been proved in number of ways. Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer proved the congruences and some more relations about partition İn the case of mod5 and 7 in terms of rank, Garvan proved them in three cases in terms of crank. In this study, we give an another proof of their results in the case of mod5 by using the theory of modular forms. Although our method is …

Immersions Preserved Under Rotations With Totally Reducible Focal Set, Rıdvan Ezentaş Jan 1997

Immersions Preserved Under Rotations With Totally Reducible Focal Set, Rıdvan Ezentaş

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In [1] Carter and the author introduced the idea of an immersion f : Mm-+ Rn with totally reducible focal set (TRFS). Such an immersion has the property that, for all p E M, the focal set with base p is a union of hyperplanes in the normal plane to f(M) at f(p) . Here we show that if we take two immersions with TRFS then we can construct new immersions with TRFS. In particular, rotating an immersion with TRFS about an axis gives anew immersion with TRFS.

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let R be a prime ring. Let \sigma , \tau be two homomorphisms and d be a (\sigma,\tau)-derivation of R. The purpose of this paper is to prove two results: (i) If char R \neq 2, U is a non-zero ideal of R, \sigma is subjective such that \sigma (U) \neq 0, \tau is an automorphism and [d(U), d(U)]_{\sigma,\tau} = 0, then \sigma^2 = \tau^2 and \sigma \tau = \tau \sigma. (ii) Under the assumptions that either char R = 0 or char R > max {2,n}, U is a non-zero right ideal, and \sigma, \tau are automorphisms of R, suppose …
