On-Line System Identification For Control System Applications In Particle Accelerators, Mahesh Chowdhary Jan 1997

On-Line System Identification For Control System Applications In Particle Accelerators, Mahesh Chowdhary

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Particle accelerators require a number of feedback systems in order to stabilize a variety of parameters. The Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility presents a unique set of control and identification problems. This accelerator produces a continuous electron beam with energies between 0.5 and 4.0 GeV to be delivered to the experimental halls. In order to meet stringent beam quality requirements specified by the experimental halls, the position and the energy of the electron beam needs to stabilized at various locations in the accelerator.;A number of noise measurement tests were conducted at various locations in the …

Radiation-Induced Luminescence In Terbium-Doped Silicate Glasses, Michael Stuart West Jan 1997

Radiation-Induced Luminescence In Terbium-Doped Silicate Glasses, Michael Stuart West

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The purpose of this study is to characterize radiation-induced luminescence of terbium-doped silicate glasses. Experiments performed investigated the optical properties, isothermal time-evolution, and temperature dependence of the radiation-induced luminescence of two commercially available terbium-doped glasses. A problem common to this type of glass is the persistent luminescence, or afterglow, that occurs following the end of excitation from an external source of radiation. While the processes that govern characteristic luminescence of rare earth ions, including terbium, are well understood, the processes that give rise to afterglow in doped glasses are not. Identifying the source of long-term luminescence is essential for controlling …

Cp Violation In K-Long Decays, Gregory Dominick Dorata Jan 1997

Cp Violation In K-Long Decays, Gregory Dominick Dorata

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The main topic of this dissertation concerns alternative models of CP violation and the rates predicted by these models for the particular decay {dollar}K\sb{lcub}L{rcub}\to\pi\sp0\nu\bar\nu .{dollar} This decay is promising as a probe of the origin of CP violation in the kaon system. It is virtually free of hadronic uncertainties and its branching ratio would (along with a measurement of the CP asymmetry in {dollar}B\sbsp{lcub}d{rcub}{lcub}0{rcub}\to\psi K\sb{lcub}S{rcub}){dollar} allow a determination of all the elements of the CKM matrix (assuming all CP violation arises from the CKM matrix).;The first group of models of CP violation considered consists of three extensions of the Higgs …

Thermal Lattice Boltzmann Simulations Of Variable Prandtl Number Turbulent Flow, Min Soe Jan 1997

Thermal Lattice Boltzmann Simulations Of Variable Prandtl Number Turbulent Flow, Min Soe

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

With the advent of massively parallel processor machines, thermal lattice Boltzmann equation (TLBE) techniques offer an attractive way of handling turbulence simulations. TLBE is new form of DNS (direct numerical simulation method)--with the important advantages of being ideal for multi-parallel processors as well as being able to handle complicated geometries. Since there are many kinetic models that will reproduce the macroscopic nonlinear (compressible) transport equations, TLBE chooses that subset which can be readily solved on a discrete spatial lattice. The lattice geometry must be so chosen that the discrete phase representation of TLBE will not taint the rotational symmetric continuum …

The Synthesis, Characterization, And Molecular Modeling Of Cyclic Arylene Ether Oligomers, Sheeba Ahmed Jan 1997

The Synthesis, Characterization, And Molecular Modeling Of Cyclic Arylene Ether Oligomers, Sheeba Ahmed

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Cyclophanes are a family of bridged cyclic aromatic compounds that have found extensive applications in host-guest chemistry, molecular recognition, biomimetics and most recently as precursors in ring-opening polymerizations.;This research presents the synthesis of several novel cyclic arylene ether oligomers, based on 1,3-bis(4-fluorobenzoyl) benzene and 3,3{dollar}\sp\prime{dollar}-methylene diphenol and 3,3{dollar}\sp\prime{dollar}-(ethylene dioxy) diphenol, and their characterization by LC-MS/MS, 1-D {dollar}\sp1{dollar}H-NMR and x-ray crystallography. Electrospray ionization (ES) along with MS/MS was used to characterize cyclic oligomers of molecular weight up to 1600 Da. The thermal properties of these cyclic oligomers were studied by differential scanning calorimetery (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA).;These cyclic oligomers …

Propagation Of Rayleigh Waves In Thin Films, Agus A. Ananda Jan 1997

Propagation Of Rayleigh Waves In Thin Films, Agus A. Ananda

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

With the advent of thin film technology and more recently its applications in microelectronics and control of surface properties, the interest in mechanical properties of thin films has grown tremendously. Mechanical defects such as creep, fracture and adhesion loss, play a very important role in physical instabilities of thin film materials. An acoustic microscope has been built to study mechanical properties of thin-films. The microscope operates at a nominal frequency of 50 MHz. Rayleigh surface waves velocities on the surface of film-substrate systems were measured from V(z) curves generated by the acoustic microscope. V(z) curves are produced from interference between …

Weak Bands Within Ice Stream B, West Antarctica, Christina L. Hulbe, I. M. Whillans Jan 1997

Weak Bands Within Ice Stream B, West Antarctica, Christina L. Hulbe, I. M. Whillans

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Kilometer-scale variations in ice velocity and surface topography are used to investigate the style of glacier deformation in the main body of Ice Stream B, West Antarctica. The pattern is very different from that reported for other glaciers. For the 250 km2 area studied on Ice Stream B, most of the observed deformation occurs within two narrow bands, in which there is large across-flow compression and slow lateral shearing. The bands underlie valleys in the ice-surface topography. Measured upward displacement of ice adjacent to the rapidly compressing bands appears to be linked to the creation of the ice stream's topography. …

An Approach To Display Layout Of Dynamic Windows, Nihar Trivedi Jan 1997

An Approach To Display Layout Of Dynamic Windows, Nihar Trivedi

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The development of windows based user interface has introduced a new dimension to the field of human computer interaction. Now a user is able to perform multiple tasks at a time, often switching from one task to another. However windows environment also imposes the burden of manual windows management on the user. Several studies have suggested that manual window management is an unproductive chore often resulting in clutter and confusion on the display screen. Therefore we need a automatic windows layout generator to free the user to perform other useful tasks. This thesis introduces SPORDAC {Shadow Propagation for Overlap Removal …

Potential For Coastal Flooding Due To Coseismic Subsidence In The Central Cascadia Margin, Elson T. Barnett Jan 1997

Potential For Coastal Flooding Due To Coseismic Subsidence In The Central Cascadia Margin, Elson T. Barnett

Dissertations and Theses

Interpretations made from compilation of existing core and cutbank data for Oregon and Washington are used to evaluate the potential flooding impact from regional coseismic subsidence. Estimates of regional subsidence are based on tidal level indicators including plant macrofossils, peat development, and diatoms. A compilation of existing late Holocene stratigraphic records shows multiple burial events in all bays of Oregon, however some coastal sites in central Oregon show continuous submergence. Tests of tidal level indicators using modern Cascadia wetlands indicate that paleosubsidence can be estimated to 0.0 ± 0.5m, 1.0 ±0.5m, and 2 m ± 0.5m. An AMS date from …

Measurement Of The Focal Properties Of A Magnetic Electron Lens Using The Shadowgraph Method, Luis Thomas Almaraz Jan 1997

Measurement Of The Focal Properties Of A Magnetic Electron Lens Using The Shadowgraph Method, Luis Thomas Almaraz

Dissertations and Theses

A method of experimentally determining the properties of a magnetic electron lens is presented. The method uses the shadows cast by two meshes, one placed in front of the lens and one behind the lens, to study the properties of the image of a point source. The lens properties are then calculated from the image properties. The paraxial values of focal length and focal distance as well as their spherical aberrations, are determined. The relationship between image and lens properties are discussed. The method is used here for the first time in determining the focal properties of a magnetic lens.

The Interaction Of Naphthoquinones With The Calcium Release Channel Of Skeletal Muscle Sarcoplasmic Reticulum, Ruohong Xia Jan 1997

The Interaction Of Naphthoquinones With The Calcium Release Channel Of Skeletal Muscle Sarcoplasmic Reticulum, Ruohong Xia

Dissertations and Theses

The sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) is an intracellular membrane system which regulates cytoplasmic calcium concentration in muscle and controls the contractile state of muscle. In this thesis, the interaction between naphthoquinone and the Ca2+ release mechanism of SR is described. 1,4-naphthoquinone (1,4NQ) is shown to stimulate Ca2+ release and to modify high-affinity ryanodine binding to skeletal muscle sarcoplasmic reticulum. The interaction between 1,4NQ and the SR involves the oxidation ofcritical sulfhydryl groups associated with the Ca2+ release mechanism. The modulation of ryanodine binding by 1,4NQ is biphasic. At low concentrations of 1,4NQ (<10 >μM) ryanodine binding is stimulated, …

Efficient Implementation Of Image Compression-Postprocessing Algorithm Using A Digital Signal Processor, Nadir Sinaceur Jan 1997

Efficient Implementation Of Image Compression-Postprocessing Algorithm Using A Digital Signal Processor, Nadir Sinaceur

Dissertations and Theses

In this thesis, an attempt has been made to develop a fast way to implement a post-processing algorithm for image compression. All the previous tests for this postprocessing algorithm, which we will present, have been only software based and did not consider the time parameter.

For this purpose a new algorithm is used to compute the 2-D DCT transform. This change made the process a lot faster on a Spare 5 workstation. We have then decided to further increase the speed of the post-processing scheme by implementing it on the ADSP21020 chip.

The results show that such a chip can …

Semiclassical Model Of Λ-Doublet States In Diatomic Molecules, Laurie J. Kovalenko, John B. Delos Jan 1997

Semiclassical Model Of Λ-Doublet States In Diatomic Molecules, Laurie J. Kovalenko, John B. Delos

Arts & Sciences Articles

An intuitive picture of Λ-doubling in diatomic molecules is presented using a semiclassical theory. A common view of Λ-doubling as arising from electrons “lagging” behind the rotating internuclear axis is shown to be misleading; rather, the eigenfunctions are symmetric about the molecular axes and can be expressed as a superposition of pure nonrotating orbitals and travelling waves. These results are shown to be consistent with a full quantum treatment. We also examine, for the first time, time-dependent states, by monitoring expectation values of electronic- and nuclear-angular momenta. For low rotation frequency, the expectation value of the electronic-angular momentum locks onto …
