We report on tests of a prototype detector system designed to perform imaging and spectroscopy on 20 to 250 MeV neutrons. Although developed for the study of high-energy solar flare processes, the detection techniques employed for SONTRAC, the SOlar Neutron TRACking experiment, can be applied to measurements in a variety of disciplines including atmospheric physics, radiation therapy and nuclear materials monitoring. The SONTRAC instrument measures the energy and direction ofneutrons by detecting double neutron-proton scatters and recording images of the ionization tracks of the recoil protons in a densely packed bundle of scintillating plastic fibers stacked in orthogonal layers. Do The Broad Emission Line Clouds See The Same Continuum That We See?, Kirk Korista, Gary J. Ferland, Jack Baldwin
Do The Broad Emission Line Clouds See The Same Continuum That We See?, Kirk Korista, Gary J. Ferland, Jack Baldwin
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
Recent observations of quasars, Mrk 335 and the HST quasar composite spectrum, have indicated that many quasars have remarkably soft ionizing continua (f ∝ ~ ν-2, 13.6-100 eV). We point out that the number of photons with hν > 54.4 eV is insufficient to create the observed strengths of the He II emission lines. While the numbers of photons which energize C IV λ1549 and O VI λ1034 are sufficient, even the most efficiently emitting clouds for these two lines must each cover at least 20%-40% of the source. If the typical quasar ionizing continuum is indeed this …

A Sign-Changing Solution For A Superlinear Dirichlet Problem, Alfonso Castro, Jorge Cossio, John M. Neuberger
A Sign-Changing Solution For A Superlinear Dirichlet Problem, Alfonso Castro, Jorge Cossio, John M. Neuberger
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
We show that a superlinear boundary value problem has at least three nontrivial solutions. A pair are of one sign (positive and negative, respectively), and the third solution changes sign exactly once. The critical level of the sign-changing solution is bounded below by the sum of the two lesser levels of the one-sign solutions. If nondegenerate, the one sign solutions are of Morse index 1 and the signchanging solution has Morse index 2. Our results extend and complement those of Z.Q. Wang [12].

Efficacy Of Deer Stopper™ Repellent For Reducing White-Tailed Deer Damage To Ornamental Plantings, James B. Armstrong, M. Keith Causey, John T. Owen
Eighth Eastern Wildlife Damage Management Conference (1997)
A 2-year study was undertaken to assess the efficacy of Deer Stopper™ repellent for reducing white-tailed deer damage to ornamental plantings. Efficacy testing was conducted on a captive deer herd at Auburn University’s White-tailed Deer Research Facility and the Stimpson Wildlife Sanctuary, Jackson, AL. Japanese Holly (Ilex crenata), a highly preferred browse species in this area, was used as the test plant at all study sites. Plants were arranged randomly between treatment and control. Treatment plants were sprayed with prescribed applications of Deer Stopper™ and percent defoliation and browsing estimated for each plant. Repeated measures analysis of variance …
Attempted Relocation Of A Ring-Billed Gull Roost At Washington National Report, Jessica Dewey, Martin Lowney
Attempted Relocation Of A Ring-Billed Gull Roost At Washington National Report, Jessica Dewey, Martin Lowney
Eighth Eastern Wildlife Damage Management Conference (1997)
Gulls, particularly ring-billed gulls [Larus delawarensis ], have been identified as a threat to aircraft operations at Washington National Airport (now Ronald Reagan National Airport) in northern Virginia. Through bird surveys conducted in 1992, 1993, and 1997, an estimated 7,000 gulls were observed roosting during winter on the Potomac River near the airport. A harassment program was run on 5 consecutive evenings, 24-28 February 1997, to relocate the roosting gulls. Six to 8 people shot pyrotechnics from shore and 2 boats for 2 hours prior to dusk each evening. Each evening the gulls arrived consistently later than the prior …

Controlling Great-Tailed Grackle Damage To Citrus In The Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas, James F. Glahn, Jose D. Palacios, Melvin Garrison
Controlling Great-Tailed Grackle Damage To Citrus In The Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas, James F. Glahn, Jose D. Palacios, Melvin Garrison
Eighth Eastern Wildlife Damage Management Conference (1997)
Great-tailed grackle (Quiscalus mexicanus) damage to citrus is a serious concern to producers in the lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Damage caused by grackles pecking fruit is initiated by breeding colonies in the spring on immature fruit and extends through the fall and winter on ripening fruit. The most significant damage occurs during the post-breeding period of July through September when neither the currently registered DRC-1339-treated dog food bait nor frightening strategies are effective. Observations by Texas Wildlife Services personnel suggested that watermelon was highly attractive to grackles during the period when dog food baits are poorly …
Developing Urban Deer Management Plans: The Need For Public Education, Deborah Green, Glen R. Askins, Phillip D. West
Developing Urban Deer Management Plans: The Need For Public Education, Deborah Green, Glen R. Askins, Phillip D. West
Eighth Eastern Wildlife Damage Management Conference (1997)
Independent public opinion surveys concerning urban deer (Odocoileus virginianus) management were conducted in two Virginia communities. A total of 346 citizens were interviewed in two Random Digit Dial telephone surveys. In addition to questions concerning management techniques and their administration, participants were asked about their experience with deer, their awareness of problems with deer in the area, and their enjoyment of deer. In both localities, non-lethal controls were preferred over lethal controls; trapping and relocation, fencing, repellents, and birth control measures were favored by a majority of residents. The only lethal control acceptable to residents in both communities …
The Use Of Gis To Delineate Potential Urban Deer Habitat, David M. Kocka, Frederick M. Garst
The Use Of Gis To Delineate Potential Urban Deer Habitat, David M. Kocka, Frederick M. Garst
Eighth Eastern Wildlife Damage Management Conference (1997)
Overabundant deer herds in urban environments often require new and creative approaches to properly evaluate the situation and gain support for population management. To determine potential white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) habitat for the Harrisonburg, Virginia, Deer Task Force, a geographic information systems (GIS) map was created that reflected current land use in the city. Data were compiled using 2m resolution Digital Ortho Quarter Quads. Using this backdrop, land use zones were digitized on-screen. Wooded (13%), Agricultural (20%), and Open Areas (14%) land use types accounted for nearly half the city's land area and represent a conservative estimate of …
Aldo Leopold’S Land Ethic: Implications For Predator Management, Johnny Stowe
Aldo Leopold’S Land Ethic: Implications For Predator Management, Johnny Stowe
Eighth Eastern Wildlife Damage Management Conference (1997)
The golden rule of Aldo Leopold’s land ethic clearly supports active management of predators that harm populations of rare animal species. In the early part of his career, while working as a forester in the American Southwest, Leopold advocated exterminating large predators like gray wolves (Canis lupus lupus) and grizzly bears (Ursus arctos horribilis) from the region, but he later changed his mind when he realized that native predators help maintain ecosystem integrity. Philosophically, Leopold’s changing views on predators exemplifies John Dewey’s customary and reflective morality. But Leopold’s dramatic narrative in A Sand County Almanac about …
Wildlife-Caused Losses For Catfish Producers In 1996, Alice P. Wywialowski
Wildlife-Caused Losses For Catfish Producers In 1996, Alice P. Wywialowski
Eighth Eastern Wildlife Damage Management Conference (1997)
In January 1997, the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) surveyed catfish producers about wildlife-caused losses in 1996, Of the 1,465 catfish producers in 15 states surveyed, 1,008 (68.8%) agreed to complete the survey. Surveys were conducted primarily by telephone, but some producers received mail surveys. The response rated varied among states. The majority of catfish producers were in Mississippi (n=-300), followed by Alabama (n=163), and then Arkansas (n=117). The remaining states each had <100 respondents. Data were analyzed for 6 regions, each with a sample size of >100 respondents. Overall, 69% of catfish producers cited a wildlife-caused loss of catfish. Producers cited losses to wildlife most frequently in Mississippi (81%), followed by states adjoining …100>

The chemical engineering curriculum in the United States has trained generations of technical experts who have successfully optimized chemical processes and products once they entered the chemical industry. The U.S. chemical industry, however, has entered a critical stage in which it must be able to create new and differentiated value through technical innovations that arc essential for long-term survival. This innovation process will require new skills that go far beyond the traditional expertise for the optimization of tasks possessed by young chemical engineers. The innovators must be able to identify new opportunities, explore the boundaries of technology, evaluate critical issues, …
Two-Dimensional Spectral Analysis Of Mesospheric Airglow Image Data, F. J. Garcia, Michael J. Taylor, M. C. Kelley
Two-Dimensional Spectral Analysis Of Mesospheric Airglow Image Data, F. J. Garcia, Michael J. Taylor, M. C. Kelley
All Physics Faculty Publications
A technique to analyze short-period (<1 hour) gravity wave structure in all-sky images of the airglow emissions is described. The technique involves spatial calibration, star removal, geographic projection, regridding, and flat fielding of the data prior to the determination of the horizontal wave parameters (wavelength, velocity, and period), by use of standard two-dimensional Fourier analysis techniques. The method was developed to exploit the information that is now available with wide-field solid state imaging systems. This technique permits interactive and quantitative investigations of large, complex data sets. Such studies are important for investigating gravity wave characteristics, their interaction with the airglow emissions, and their geographic and seasonal variability. We study one event of this type here and present possible evidence of a nonlinear wave–wave interaction in the upper atmosphere.
Assembly And Disassembly Of Dna Polymerase Holoenzyme, Daniel J. Sexton, Anthony J. Berdis, Stephen J. Benkovic
Assembly And Disassembly Of Dna Polymerase Holoenzyme, Daniel J. Sexton, Anthony J. Berdis, Stephen J. Benkovic
Chemistry Faculty Publications
The complex task of genomic replication requires a large collection of proteins properly assembled within the close confines of the replication fork. The mechanism and dynamics of holoenzyme assembly and disassembly have been investigated using steady state and pre-steady state methods as opposed to structural studies, primarily due to the intrinsic transient nature of these protein complexes during DNA replication. The key step in bacteriophage T4 holoenzyme assembly involves ATP hydrolysis, whereas disassembly is mediated by subunit dissociation of the clamp protein in an ATP-independent manner.

A Unifying Construction For Difference Sets, James A. Davis, Jonathan Jedwab
A Unifying Construction For Difference Sets, James A. Davis, Jonathan Jedwab
Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications
We present a recursive construction for difference sets which unifies the Hadamard, McFarland, and Spence parameter families and deals with all abelian groups known to contain such difference sets. The construction yields a new family of difference sets with parameters (v, k, λ,n)=(22d+4(22d+2−1)/3, 22d+1(22d+3+1)/3, 22d+1(22d+1+1)/3, 24d+2) for d⩾0. The construction establishes that a McFarland difference set exists in an abelian group of order 22 …

System For Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Measurements At High Pressure And Low Temperature, Ke Huang, Daniel L. Decker, H. Mark Nelson, J. Dean Barnett
Faculty Publications
Major improvements have been made on the sensitive high pressure electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) system developed previously in 1978 at this laboratory. These changes allow low temperature measurements and provide a more stable signal. The high pressure EPR cell is placed inside a vacuum chamber to provide thermal isolation, so that the system may be cooled by a closed cycle refrigerator to temperatures between 45 and 60 K, depending on the energy input to the modulation coil. The combination of high pressure and low temperature greatly expands the thermodynamic range over which EPR measurements can be made. An improved and …
