An analysis and assessment of three mechanisms describing plasma/shock wave interactions was conducted under conditions typically encountered in a weakly ionized glow discharge. The mechanisms of ion-acoustic wave damping, post-shock energy addition and thermal inhomogeneities were examined by numerically solving the Euler equations with appropriate source terms adapted for each mechanism. Ion-acoustic wave damping was examined by modeling the partially ionized plasma as two fluids in one spatial dimension using the Riemann problem as a basis. At first glance, these small, stocky, short-tailed rodents may seem harmless, but don't let their appearance fool you! Voles (a.k.a. meadow mice) can cause w lot of damage. Voles kill trees by removing all the bark around the base of the tree (girdling), and by feeding on tree roots. Vole damage to seedlings and tree roots can significantly reduce reforestation rates and tree growth. In British Columbia, vole damage was the main reason over 40 percent of the forest plantations examined had inadequate restocking rates. Search For The Standard Model Higgs Boson In E+E- Collisions At √S = 161, 170 And 172 Gev, Barate, R.; Et Al., M. Thulasidas

The reaction e+ e ! HZ is used to search for the Standard Model Higgs boson. The data sample consists of integrated luminosities of 10:9 pb1 , 1:1 pb1 , and 9:5 pb1 collected by the ALEPH experiment at LEP during 1996, at centre-of-mass energies of 161, 170 and 172 GeV, respectively. No candidate events were found, in agreement with the expected background of 0.84 events from all Standard Model processes. This search results in a 95% C.L. lower limit on the Higgs boson mass of 69:4 GeV=c2 . When combined with earlier ALEPH searches performed at energies at and …

2D-mesh and torus networks have often been proposed as the interconnection pattern for parallel computers. In addition, wormhole routing has increasingly been advocated as a method of reducing latency. Most analysis of wormhole routed networks, however, has focused on the torus and the broader class of k-ary n-cubes to which it belongs. This paper presents a performance model for the wormhole routed mesh, and it compares the performance of the mesh and torus based on theoretical and empirical analyses.

This thesis involves work that was accomplished during a two-year internship at the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA), Environmental Chemistry Branch. The research is an application of trace level determination of fluorescein dyes used as groundwater tracers. The work was performed to determine whether groundwater could migrate from a Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA) site to an adjacent Superfund site. The research involved using Spectrofluorimetry and a new technique called capillary electrophoresis/laser induced fluorescence (CE/LIF) to determine tracer dyes that were injected at the RCRA site and monitored at the Superfund site. Results from Spectrofluorimetry were compared to those of CE/LIF. …

As a result of legislative action in 1975 (Florida Administrative Code Section 16C-16, 16C-17), landscape reclamation is required on all lands mined for phosphate in the State of Florida. Between 1975 and 1991, for example, approximately 40,000 ha of land in Florida were strip mined for phosphate and thus subject to provisions of this legislation. In excess of 2,700 ha of mitigation wetlands have been constructed as part of the land reclamation effort, but the degree to which these systems mimic both the structural and functional properties of natural wetlands is poorly known.

Linking Transport Infrastructure Investments And Economic Development In Sub-Saharan Africa, Ambe J. Njoh

The study explores the link between investments in transportation infrastructure, operationalized in terms of road density, and economic development, defined in terms of gross domestic product per capita (GDP/Cap), in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The findings support the hypothesis of a positive association between the two variables. The association is stronger for paved, than for all, roads in general. Furthermore, a negative but statistically insignificant relationship is observed between unpaved roads and economic development. Thus, economic development is a function more of quality, than quantity of roads in SSA. Therefore, a more judicious use of the scarce resource of sub-Saharan African …

The study area covers the Cranbrook townsite and two catchments that affect it. The Cranbrook Town is located 85 km north-north-west of Albany and it has a population of 320 people (1190 in the Shire; ABS Census 1991).

Cranbrook is experiencing salinity problems. Saline groundwater levels are close to the soil surface and cause deterioration of buildings, roads, infrastructure, death of trees and scalding of land including the sporting ground.

The objective of this study was to define the present salinity status of the Cranbrook Town and develop management strategies to overcome or reduce the severity of salinity.

We present measurements of S K S splitting at 28 digital seismic stations and 35 analog stations in the Baikal rift zone, Siberia, and adjacent areas, and at 17 stations in the East African Rift in Kenya and compare them with previous measurements from the Rio Grande Rift of North America. Fast directions in the inner region of the Baikal rift zone are distributed in two orthogonal directions, NE and NW, approximately parallel and perpendicular to the NE strike of the rift. In the adjacent Siberian platform and northern Mongolian fold belt, only the rift-orthogonal fast direction is observed. In …

Typical field emitters consist of sharp metal tips which usually have a short life due to erosion and contamination. To improve the performance of regular field emitters, diamond can be placed on the emitter tip. This is done by selectively growing diamond on tungsten tips using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) processing. Diamond exhibits negative electron affinity, so that electrons will be emitted by properly biasing the tip.

To obtain single crystal growth right at the tip, a cantilever controlled nucleation method was developed which worked better than other methods. Surface preparation was also important to the growth process. An oxide …

The effect of an ice shelf in the Labrador Sea on ice-rafted sediment delivery to the glacial North Atlantic is investigated using a finite element numerical model of ice shelf flow. Discharge into the shelf from Hudson Strait creates a thick central core, extending downstream into the shelf, that is flanked by relatively thin ice. Melting at the base of the deep keel would produce cool, fresh water which would rise to refreeze along the keel's flanks. Debris deposited by melting deep central ice could create the Heinrich layers observed in the Labrador Sea while the debris-rich ice protected by …

Development and implementation of a networking standard such as the new Internet Protocol (IPv6) is a very difficult process. Different implementations of the standard must be fully compatible to allow different computers to communicate with each other. However, standards are often ambiguous, frequently a result of providing specifications in the English language. A more formal specification could assist in the design of systems. We present and analyze the off-line star algorithm for clustering static information systems and the on-line star algorithm for clustering dynamic information systems. These algorithms partition a document collection into a number of clusters that is naturally induced by the collection. We show a lower bound on the accuracy of the clusters produced by these algorithms. We use the random graph model to show that both star algorithms produce correct clusters in time Theta(V + E). Finally, we provide data from extensive experiments.

The goal of this research is to show how to solve a velocity estimation problem using a neural network connected to an array of sensors. Motivated by biological studies involving insect vision, the neural network utilized is a member of a class of shunting neural networks. When an object moves across the face of the sensor array, the neural network's pulse response is first temporally located using classical M-ary detection techniques. Both storage and thermal disposal of sewage sludge from industrial wastewater treatment plants are a significant source of air pollutant emissions. The study included the sludge generated in the coke-chemical industry. The paper presents the results of measurements of emissions of selected substances during storage of the waste in a closed storage hall with natural ventilation and during incineration of the mechanically dewatered sludge in a multiple hearth furnace.

The paper presents selected results of research on hospital and pharmaceutical waste incineration in a full-scale rotary kiln with variable loads of the kiln. As part of these studies measurements of air pollutant concentrations in flue gases and leaching tests of solid combustion products were carried out. Based on these studies, the maximum dose of hospital and pharmaceutical waste was proposed in the mixture with industrial wastes, which does not cause excessive air emissions. The average emission factors for the waste mixture loading were also determined.

We have observed new channels for τ decays with an η in the final state. We study 3-prong tau decays, using the η →γγ and η → 3π ⁰ decay modes and 1-prong decays with two π ⁰’s using the η →γγ channel. The measured branching fractions are B(τ^- → π^-π^-π⁺ην_τ) = (3. _-0.5^+0.6 ± 0.6) X 10^-4 and B(τ^- → π^-2π ⁰ην_τ) = (1.4 ± 0.6 ± 0.3) X 10^-4. We observe clear evidence for f_{1 …}
