Is Chapter 11 Too Favorable To Debtors? Evidence From Abroad, Theodore Eisenberg, Stefan Sundgren Sep 1997

Is Chapter 11 Too Favorable To Debtors? Evidence From Abroad, Theodore Eisenberg, Stefan Sundgren

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Chapter 11 is widely believed to be among the industrialized world's most debtor-oriented reorganization laws. Critics assert that Chapter 11 is too easily available and that it allows debtors too much control by, inter alia, not requiring appointment of a trustee. One criticism of Chapter 11, low returns to unsecured creditors, resonates with an important theme of this Symposium, the Bebchuk-Fried proposal to reduce secured creditor priority in insolvency proceedings. The Chapter 11 criticisms and the Bebchuk-Fried proposal raise the question whether less easy access to Chapter 11, reduced debtor control, diminished secured creditor priority, or other changes could reduce …

Parameter Estimation For Real Filtered Sinusoids, Daniel R. Zahirniak Sep 1997

Parameter Estimation For Real Filtered Sinusoids, Daniel R. Zahirniak

Theses and Dissertations

This research develops theoretical methods for parameter estimation of filtered, pulsed sinusoids in noise and demonstrates their effectiveness for Electronic Warfare EW applications. Within the context of stochastic modeling, a new linear model, parameterized by a set of Linear Prediction LP coefficients, is derived for estimating the frequencies of filtered sinusoids. This model is an improvement over previous modeling techniques since the effects of the filter and the coefficients upon the noise statistics are properly accounted for during model development. From this linear model, a relationship between LP coefficient estimation and Maximum Likelihood ML frequency estimation is derived and several …

Extracting Functionally Equivalent Object-Oriented Designs From Legacy Imperative Code, Ricky E. Sward Sep 1997

Extracting Functionally Equivalent Object-Oriented Designs From Legacy Imperative Code, Ricky E. Sward

Theses and Dissertations

This research defines a methodology for automatically extracting functionally equivalent object-oriented designs from legacy imperative programs. The Parameter-Based Object Identification (PBOI) methodology is based on fundamental ideas that relate programs written in imperative languages such as C or COBOL to objects and classes written in object-oriented languages such as Ada 95 or C ++. Transformations have been developed that formalize the PBOI methodology and a formal proof is provided showing the extracted object-oriented design is functionally equivalent to the legacy imperative system. To focus the task of re-engineering, generic models of imperative programming languages and object-oriented programming languages have been …

Calibration And Validation Of The Checkpoint Model To The Air Force Electronic Systems Center Software Database, Thomas C. Shrum

Theses and Dissertations

This research effort focused on the calibration and validation of CHECKPOINT Version 2.3.1, a computerized software cost estimating tool, to the USAF Electronic Systems Center (ESC) software database. This thesis is a direct follow-on to a 1996 CHECKPOINT study at the Air Force Institute of Technology, which successfully calibrated and validated CHECKPOINT to the SMC software database. While this research generally parallels the methodology in the aforementioned study, it offers advancements in the CHECKPOINT calibration and validation procedure, and it refines the data stratification process and the statistical analyses employed. After stratifying the ESC software database into ten usable data …

Ion Acceleration And Anomalous Transport In The Near Wake Of A Plasma Limiter, D. P. Sheehan, J. Bowles, R. Mcwilliams Sep 1997

Ion Acceleration And Anomalous Transport In The Near Wake Of A Plasma Limiter, D. P. Sheehan, J. Bowles, R. Mcwilliams

Physics and Biophysics: Faculty Scholarship

Ion acceleration and anomalous transport were studied experimentally in the near wake region of an electrically floating disk limiter immersed in two different types of collisionless, supersonically flowing, magnetized plasmas: the first initially quiescent, the second initially turbulent. Ion densities and velocity distributions were obtained using a nonperturbing laser induced fluorescence diagnostic. Large-amplitude, low-frequency turbulence was observed at the obstacle edge and in the wake. Rapid ion and electron configuration space transport and ion velocity space transport were observed. Configuration space and velocity space transport were similar for both quiescent and turbulent plasma-obstacle systems, suggesting that plasma-obstacle effects outweigh the …

Search For Sleptons In E+E- Collisions At Centre-Of-Mass Energies Of 161 Gev And 172 Gev, R. Barate, Manoj Thulasidas Sep 1997

Search For Sleptons In E+E- Collisions At Centre-Of-Mass Energies Of 161 Gev And 172 Gev, R. Barate, Manoj Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The data recorded by the ALEPH experiment at LEP at centre–of–mass energies of 161 GeV and 172 GeV were analysed to search for sleptons, the supersymmetric partners of leptons. No evidence for the production of these particles was found. The number of candidates observed is consistent with the background expected from four–fermion processes and γγ–interactions. Improved mass limits at 95% C.L. are reported.

Absolute Triply Differential (E,2E) Cross Section Measurements For H With Comparison To Theory, J. Roder, H. Erhardt, Cheng Pan, Anthony F. Starace, Igor Bray, Dmitry V. Fursa Sep 1997

Absolute Triply Differential (E,2E) Cross Section Measurements For H With Comparison To Theory, J. Roder, H. Erhardt, Cheng Pan, Anthony F. Starace, Igor Bray, Dmitry V. Fursa

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Absolute triply differential (e,2e) cross section measurements are presented for H (for incident energies, E0, of 15.6 and 17.6 eV) for equal energy sharing and the θ12 = π configuration. Results of distorted partial wave calculations agree with the measurements; those of convergent close coupling calculations agree with the relative angular distributions, but are lower than experiment by factors of from 2 to 7. Relative experimental results for H for E0 = 14.6 eV show a qualitative change in shape, which agrees with theory. Implications of the absolute experimental results for the …

Stellar Populations And The White Dwarf Mass Function: Connections To Supernova Ia Luminosities, Ted Von Hippel, G. D. Bothum, R. A. Schommer Sep 1997

Stellar Populations And The White Dwarf Mass Function: Connections To Supernova Ia Luminosities, Ted Von Hippel, G. D. Bothum, R. A. Schommer

Publications

We discuss the luminosity function of SNe Ia under the assumption that recent evidence for dispersion in this standard candle is related to variations in the white dwarf mass function (WDMF) in the host galaxies. We develop a simple parameterization of the WDMF as a function of age of a stellar population and apply this to galaxies of different morphological types. We show that this simplified model is consistent with the observed WDMF of Bergeron et al. (1992) for the solar neighborhood. Our simple models predict that WDMF variations can produce a range of more than 1.8 mag in MB(SN …

Complexity And Decomposability Of Relations, Martin Zwick Sep 1997

Complexity And Decomposability Of Relations, Martin Zwick

Systems Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

A discrete multivariate relation, defined set-theoretically, is a subset of a cartesian product of sets which specify the possible values of a number of variables. Where three or more variables are involved, the highest order relation, namely the relation between all the variables, may or may not be decomposable without loss into sets of lower order relations which involve subsets of the variables. In a completely parallel manner, the highest order relation defined information-theoretically, namely the joint probability distribution involving all the variables, may or may not be decomposed without loss into lower-order distributions involving subsets of the variables. Decomposability …

Optically Identified Supernova Remnants In The Nearby Spiral Galaxies Ngc 5204, Ngc 5585, Ngc 6946, M81, And M101, David M. Matonick, Robert A. Fesen Sep 1997

Optically Identified Supernova Remnants In The Nearby Spiral Galaxies Ngc 5204, Ngc 5585, Ngc 6946, M81, And M101, David M. Matonick, Robert A. Fesen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present the results of an optical search for supernova remnants (SNRs) in the spiral galaxies NGC 5204, NGC 5585, NGC 6946, M81, and M101. Using the criterion that emission nebulae with [S II]/Hα ≥ 0.45 are identified as SNRs, we found three SNRs in NGC 5204, five in NGC 5585, 27 in NGC 6946, 41 in M81, and 93 in M101. Including the 35 SNRs recently detected in NGC 2403 by Matonick et al., we have doubled the current number of galaxies that have been well searched for SNRs and increased the number of known extragalactic SNRs by about …

A Measurement Of The Qcd Colour Factors And A Limit On The Light Gluino, Barate, R.; Et Al., M. Thulasidas Sep 1997

A Measurement Of The Qcd Colour Factors And A Limit On The Light Gluino, Barate, R.; Et Al., M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Using data collected from 1992 to 1995 with the ALEPH detector at LEP, a measurement of the colour factor ratios CA/CF and TF /CF and the strong coupling constant αs = CFαs(MZ)/(2π) has been performed by fitting theoretical predictions simultaneously to the measured differential two-jet rate and angular distributions in four-jet events. The result is found to be in excellent agreement with QCD, {fx4-1} Fixing CA/CF and TF/CF to the QCD values permits a determination of αs(MZ) and ηf, the number of active flavours. With this measurement the existence of a gluino with mass below 6.3 GeV/c2 is excluded at …

Geologic Evidence Of Historic And Prehistoric Tsunami Inundation At Seaside, Oregon, Brooke K. Fiedorowicz Sep 1997

Geologic Evidence Of Historic And Prehistoric Tsunami Inundation At Seaside, Oregon, Brooke K. Fiedorowicz

Dissertations and Theses

Over the past decade, research conducted along the Cascadia subduction zone coast established evidence for coseismic subsidence, liquefaction, and nearfield tsunami deposition. Seaside is a low lying northern Oregon coastal city potentially at risk for nearfield tsunami inundation from a Cascadia earthquake. The 1964 Alaskan farfield tsunami impacted Seaside, and deposits from that event serve as a model for interpreting prehistoric tsunami deposits in the Seaside area. A reconnaissance subsurface study of potential tsunami inundation sites was performed by trenching and gouge coring in the coastal wetlands along the Necanicum River, Neacoxie Creek, drainage to the east of Neacoxie Creek, …

Recurrence Spectroscopy Of A Time-Dependent System: A Rydberg Atom In An Oscillating Field, Neal Spellmeyer, Daniel Kleppner, M. R. Haggerty, V. Kondratovich, John B. Delos, J. Gao Sep 1997

Recurrence Spectroscopy Of A Time-Dependent System: A Rydberg Atom In An Oscillating Field, Neal Spellmeyer, Daniel Kleppner, M. R. Haggerty, V. Kondratovich, John B. Delos, J. Gao

Arts & Sciences Articles

We report the results of an experimental and theoretical investigation of the recurrence spectra of Rydberg atoms in a static plus weak oscillating electric field. Experiments reveal the systematic weakening of orbits in a recurrence spectrum as the oscillating field strength and frequency are changed. We describe a generalization of closed orbit theory to time-dependent systems and show that it provides a qualitative and quantitative description of the phenomena.

Faint Sources In The Euve Survey: Identification Of White Dwarfs, Active Late‐Type Stars, And Galactic Nuclei, Elisha Polomski, Stephane Vennes, John R. Thorstensen, Mihalis Mathioudakis, Emilio E. Falco

Dartmouth Scholarship

We report the classification of 21 new extreme-ultraviolet sources from the recent catalog of Lampton et al. The optical spectra presented identify the objects as 14 active late-type stars (including two double active stars and a possible T Tauri star), three white dwarfs, and six active galactic nuclei (a Seyfert galaxy, the BL Lac object 1ES 1028+511 [=EUVE J1031+508], and four quasi-stellar objects). We have detected Ca II absorption lines in the BL Lac object and measured its redshift. Two of the white dwarfs are unusually massive (M > 1.1 M). Our sample of late-type stars includes five …

Electron Transfer Across A Peptide-Peptide Interface Within A Designed Metalloprotein, Gennady V. Kozlov, Michael Y. Ogawa Sep 1997

Electron Transfer Across A Peptide-Peptide Interface Within A Designed Metalloprotein, Gennady V. Kozlov, Michael Y. Ogawa

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Mechanistic studies of biological electron-transfer (ET) reactions have involved the use of surface-derivatized proteins, protein−protein complexes, and polypeptide-bridged donor−acceptor compounds. These latter studies seek to use well-defined model systems to better define the role of the intervening protein matrix in mediating biological electron transfers. However, whereas many in vivo ET reactions occur across a noncovalent protein−protein interface, the primary role of the peptide spacers found in current model systems is to provide a covalent link between the donor and acceptor sites. As such, these systems are poorly suited to probe the mechanisms of ET reactions occurring across a peptide−peptide interface.

Green And Ampt Infiltration With Redistribution, Fred L. Ogden Aug 1997

Green And Ampt Infiltration With Redistribution, Fred L. Ogden

Fred L. Ogden

Distributed, physically based watershed and irrigation advance models require robust infiltration estimation capabilities. The empirical Green and Ampt (GA) equation of infiltration is a popular method for estimating infiltration. The GA parameters have physical basis and considerable prior research has focused on relating these parameters to soil textural classification. However, the original GA method is limited in that it is applicable only for a single ponding period. An explicit Green and Ampt redistribution (GAR) technique is developed herein to estimate interstorm redistribution of soil water and allow multiple ponding simulations using the GA methodology. Soil water redistribution during interponding periods …

The Hanle Effect As A Diagnostic Of Magnetic Fields In Stellar Envelopes I. Theoretical Results For Integrated Line Profiles., R. Ignace, K. H. Nordsieck, J. P. Cassinelli Aug 1997

The Hanle Effect As A Diagnostic Of Magnetic Fields In Stellar Envelopes I. Theoretical Results For Integrated Line Profiles., R. Ignace, K. H. Nordsieck, J. P. Cassinelli

Richard Ignace

The Hanle effect concerns the modification of polarized resonance-line scattering by magnetic fields; thus, it can be used as a diagnostic of stellar magnetic fields. The Hanle effect has been used to determine the field strength and distribution of magnetic structures present in prominences of the Sun. To investigate its potential use in stellar astronomy, the simplified case of an optically thin axisymmetric ring illuminated by a stellar point source is considered. The results are then used to derive the polarization from polar plumes, equatorial disks, and spherical shells. The integrated line polarization is calculated for axisymmetric rings with a …

Inference Of Steady Stellar Wind V(R) Laws From Optically Thin Emission Lines I. Idealised Analysis For The Profile Of A Single Line., J. C. Brown, L. L. Richardson, J. P. Cassinelli, R. Ignace

Richard Ignace

Abstract The form of the profile Flambda_0__({DELTA}λ) of an emission line from a steady spherical wind of velocity profile v(r) is derived for the case when optical depths are small, when stellar occultation of the wind is neglected, and when v(r) is highly supersonic. It is shown how the resulting integral equation for v(r), given Flambda_0__ ({DELTA}λ), can be inverted to yield v(r) if the line emissivity function j(r) is known. Solutions are demonstrated for simulated data in the case of a recombination line (j{prop.to}n^2^) for various trial forms of v(r). The solution is unique provided dv/dr does not change …

Symmetry, Symmetry Breaking, And The Current View Of The Dirac Monopole, Erik Kristian Leder Aug 1997

Symmetry, Symmetry Breaking, And The Current View Of The Dirac Monopole, Erik Kristian Leder

Dissertations and Theses

The ideas of symmetry and symmetry breaking are considered in the context of classical gauge theory. Local U(l) symmetry is developed for a complex scalar field and electromagnetism is identified as the associated gauge field. Local S0(3) theory for a triplet of real scalar fields is derived and the incorporation of additional gauge fields is demonstrated. Symmetry breaking for the S0(3) gauge theory is performed and the gauge fields are shown to acquire mass by the Higgs mechanism. The equations of the t'Hooft-Polyakov monopole are derived and compared to those of the magnetic monopole of Dirac.

Electrical Potential Distribution Around A Charged Colloidal Particle: Nonlinear Integral Equation, Yongxian Qian Aug 1997

Electrical Potential Distribution Around A Charged Colloidal Particle: Nonlinear Integral Equation, Yongxian Qian

Journal of Electrochemistry

The electrical potential distribution around a charged colloidal particle in a solution of general electrolytes is governed by the nonlinear Poisson Boltzmann equation, which is a differential equation and difficult to solve analytically. In this paper we numerically calculate the electrical potential using nonlinear Qian Poisson Bolazmann integral equation (PBIE). First, we introduce the PBIE derived from the physical principles for electrostatic fields and thermodynamic systems. Then the PBIE is numerically solved by means of iteration, in which the discrete potential is solely used. Finally, the accuracy of the numerical solutions proposed here is discussed. The potentials for the colloidal …

Corrosion Behaviour Of Copper Covered With Ion Selective Phenolic Coatings By Eis, Zhoucheng Wang, Yingzhou Zhang, Shaomin Zhou

Journal of Electrochemistry

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) technique was employed to study the corrosion behaviour of copper painted with the anion selective、 cation selective and bipolar phenolic coatings in 3% NaCl solution. From the impedance spectrum characteristics, the models of equivalent circuit for these different coating systems were established, and the methods for the analysis of experimental impedance diagrams in terms of coating and interface properties were discussed. The research results show that the composition and structure of ion selective coatings have significant influence on corrosion behaviour of copper. The bipolar coating consisting of an anion selective inner layer and a cation selective outer layer …

Rechargeability Of Zn Mno 2 In Non Aqueous Electrolyte, Baoqi Li, Hanxi Yan, Mifang Du, Xingping Ai

Journal of Electrochemistry

A novel Zn MnO 2 battery ststem by use of spinel related MnO 2 as positive electrode and Zn(ClO 4) 2 in propyl carbonate as electrolyte was constructed and its charge discharge behaviour was studied. The results show that the cell reaction of the system proceeds through the electrochemical intercalation of zinc into the crystalline lattice of MnO 2 to form Zn x Mn 2O 4 . At x≤0.5 , Zn x Mn 2O 4 remains its spinel structure stable and exhibits high reversibility for zinc intercalation. As a result, the battery system demonstrates excellent cycleability (>200 cycles), higher …

Electrocatalytic Oxidation Of Methanol On The Stearate Nickel L B Film, Benzeng Hua, Wenyan Hu, Yanzhen Chen

Journal of Electrochemistry

The stearate nickel L B films is good electroacatlyst for the oxidation of methanol MeOH in alkaline. The electrochemical behaviors of stearate nickel L B films is affected by the concentration of KOH. The rate of quantity of mickel ion and stearic acid in L B films is 1∶1, which means that the nickel ion may exist in -COONi(OH) form. The electrocatalytic process is influenced by the concentration of OH - , it involves the penetration of MeOH into the films. The oxidative currents of MeOH are linearly dependent on the bulk concentration.

Surface Modifications Of Carbon Materials Used As Anode Of Lithium Ion Battery Ⅲ. Improvement Of Artificially Imposed Solid Electrolyte Film On Cell Performance, Shuhua Ma, Xiabin Jing, Fosong Wang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The improving effect of solid electrolyte film artificially imposed on carbon electrode was investigated. The result showed that both the charge/discharge capacity and first charge/discharge efficiency, to a certain extent, were enhanced, and the result also suggested the effectiveness of the substitution of the artificially imposed solid electrolyte film for the inherent passivating film which was formed on the surface of the carbon electrode while inserted in the electrolyte during charging or discharging. The Scanning Electron Microscope result displayed the compact and well defined morphology of the artificially imposed crystalline film.

Preparation And Examination Of Planar Type Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Yi Jiang, Jingwang Yan, Shizhong Wang, Chunying Yu, Wenzhao Li

Journal of Electrochemistry

The solid oxide fuel cells of planar type(SOFC) have been developed after successfully preparing La 0.8 Sr 0.2 MnO 3 cathodes and Ni YSZ ceramic anodes on YSZ plates and solving the high temperature sealing technical problem. Examination of the single cells fabricated showed that the maximum power output at 950 ℃ for H 2 as fuel and air as oxidant reached 0.12 W/cm 2. It was found that the large polarization overpotential of the Ni YSZ anode and the Ohmic losses of the cells were two main factors responsible for the relative low output power density.
