Determination Of Theine And Theinein Aminophylline By Oscillographic Titration, Zhaoren Meng, Yongfu Zhan
Journal of Electrochemistry
In this paper, a method is described for the determination of theine and theine in aminophglline by oscillographic titration. The theine or theine in amimophylline and AgNO 3 can make precipitation quantitatively. The quantitative and excess AgNO 3 is added in it, when reaction has been completed, the residual AgNO 3 can be carred out directly by oscillographic titrimetry with DDTC as titrant. Trace DDTC can make a slot on oscillogram of mercury membrane and silver electrodes. Using DDTC standard solution to titrate, that is the slot appearing. It can be used to indicate end point sensitively. The characteristics of …

Let G be a connected locally compact unimodular group acting transitively on a locally compact space X. For a function f on X and g € G, define of by 9f(x) = fA 9.a), a € X. One of the recurring themes in analysis is the question of when a function f in a given function space F(X) will have property that Span{gf : g € G} is dense in F(X). If X = R and G = R, the celebrated Wiener-Tauberian theorem answers this question completely for the space L1(R): The span of the translates of fE L1(R) is …

Study Of Co(2.5 Nm)/Pt(2.5 Nm) N(N ≥50) Multilayer By Electrocrystallization, Renhe Yin, Weiming Cao, Yanpin Guo, Huifen Ji
Journal of Electrochemistry
The electrocrystallization of Co(2.5 nm)/Pt(2.5 nm) n (n ≥50) multilayer has been carried out under potential control, based on observation of reflection electron microscopy (REM). Monatomic steps on Pt single crystal surfaces have been imaged using a conventional transmission electron microscope in the reflection made. The REM images have revealed three dimintional growth of Co electrocrystallization at high polarization of -1.15 V (vs.Hg/Hg 2SO 4). The structure of the specimen was examined by small or high angle X ray diffration technique. The modulation period of a multilayered structure is 5.0 nm.

Behavior Of Copper In Hydrogen Storage Alloy Microencapsulated By Copper, Dawei Zhang, Huatang Yuan, Huabin Yang, Zuoxiang Zhou, Yunshi Zhang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Negative electrode made from Cu microencapsulated hydrogen storage alloy was studied by using cyclic voltammetry method. The results showed that copper as a coating material was of a certain stability in 5 mol/L KOH solution within the range of charge and discharge voltage. But when expanding the sweep voltage, the CV curve showed a pair of distinct oxidation reduction current peaks of Cu 2O formation at E =-0.3 V and Cu 2O reduction at E =-0.6 V. With charging discharging cycles, copper is liable to be oxidized to Cu 2O and further oxidized into CuO 2- 2. When charged again, …

Electrorheological Characters Of Polyaniline Suspensions, Guangyao Su, Deshu Gao, Changqing Zhang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Polyaniline (PAn) as the dispersive particles and insulating oil as the dispersive medium, the electrorheological fluid (ERF) is constituted. Relations between the factors of electric field strength ( E ), temperature ( T ) and the static yield stress ( τ S ), current density ( i ) of ERF are investigated. The results show that the changes of τ S and i with electric field intensity have emerged in the exponential relation, i.e, τ S∝E 0.7 , i∝E 2.18 . Otherwise, when exert a constant voltage on ERF, owing to the polarization, the absorption of medium of ERF have …

Studies On The Failure Modes Of Stationary Vrla Batteries, Yibo Tong, Xiangming Qiu
Journal of Electrochemistry
In order to improve the reliability and the quality of stationary valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) batteries, the failure modes of the stationary VRLA batteries which caused by the water loss and the thermal runaway are studied. The water loss may be solved by increasing the Oxygen recombination efficiency, choosing the suitable grid material and the additives of megative paste, decreasing the corrosion of the positive plates. The thermal runaway may be solved by decreasing the inner ohmic resistance of VRLA batteries, improving the outside condition of batteries such as putting into the absorbing heat material between the abtteries etc..

Study On Electrochemical Reactions Of K 4 Fe(Cn) 6 /K 3 Fe(Cn) 6 With Graze Ellipsometry, Shengtao Zhang, Changyuan Tao, Nianbing Li, Zongqing Huang, Chushao Xu
Journal of Electrochemistry
A measurement technology of ellipsometry called graze was put forward. Electrochemical reactions of K 4 Fe(CN) 6 /K 3 Fe(CN) 6 on glass electrode deposited indium oxide were studied with both the graze ellipsometry and cycilic voltammetry. The results indicated that ellipsometric parameter and its change during the electrochemical reactions could be confirmed with graze ellipsometry, and the regularity was corresponding to the process of electrochemical reaction. So study for electrode system could be processed with the graze ellipsometry. The graze ellipsometry could also be applied to analyze properties of diffusion layer and prosthesis limitations of other technologies.

Investigation On Electro Reduction Behaviour Of Copper Anodic Products In Concentrated Naoh Solutions Ⅱ. Electro Reduction Of Cu(Ⅱ) Products, Jianbo He, Hanhe Chen, Jianxin Lin
Journal of Electrochemistry
Potentiostatic oxidation potentiodynamic or galvanostatic reduction methods have been used to study the cathodic reduction behaviour of various products anodically formed on the second stage of copper oxidation in concentrated NaOH solutions. Seven cathodic current peaks and the corresponding cathodic potential plateaus are observed on the potentiodynamic E/i curves and the galvanostatic E/t curves, respectively. In the negative potential scan, there are three couples of voltammetric peaks which have been attributed to the formation and reduction of CuO, Cu(OH) 2 and Cu(Ⅱ) ion, respectively. The complicated mechanism for the electro formation of the three Cu(Ⅱ) species are discussed.

High Temperature Superconducting Josephson Junctions In A Stacked Bicrystal Geometry, H.Q. Li, R.H. Ono, L.R. Vale, D.A. Rudman, Sy_Hwang Liou
Sy-Hwang Liou Publications
Bicrystal grain boundary Josephson junctions were fabricated in a stack of two layers of YBa2Cu3Oχ separated by epitaxial SrTiO3. Weak link behavior was observed in the bridges formed in both layers that had similar shunted-junction characteristics but significantly different critical currents. Characteristic voltages up to 1.9 mV were measured at 4.5 K. The resonant structure was seen in the current–voltage characteristics of the upper-layer junctions, and interactions between junctions in the two layers were evident.

Observation Of The Decay DS+ → Ωπ+, R. Balest, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cleo Collaboration
Kenneth Bloom Publications
Using e+e- annihilation data collected by the CLEO II detector at CESR, we have observed the decay Ds+ → ωπ+. This final state may be produced through the annihilation decay of the i>Ds+, or through final state interactions. We find a branching ratio of γ(Ds+ → ωπ+)/γ(Ds+ →ηπ+) = 0.16±0.04±0.03, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

A Fluid In Contact With A Semipermeable Surface: Second-Order Integral Equation Approach, Douglas Henderson, Pawel Bryk, Stefan Sokolowski
Faculty Publications
An integral equation approach for a binary hard-sphere mixture interacting with a planar semipermeable wall (membrane) is formulated by using the second-order nonuniform or pair Ornstein–Zernike equation as well as the usual singlet Ornstein–Zernike equation. The results of the pair theory are compared with those obtained from the singlet theory and with computer simulation data. The pair approach is more accurate than the singlet theory.
Toy Model For Breaking Super Gauge Theories At The Effective Lagrangian Level, Joseph Schechter, Francesco Sannino
Toy Model For Breaking Super Gauge Theories At The Effective Lagrangian Level, Joseph Schechter, Francesco Sannino
Physics - All Scholarship
We propose a toy model to illustrate how the effective Lagrangian for super QCD might go over to the one for ordinary QCD by a mechanism whereby the gluinos and squarks in the fundamental theory decouple below a given supersymmetry breaking scale m. The implementation of this approach involves a suitable choice of possible supersymmetry breaking terms. An amusing feature of the model is the emergence of the ordinary QCD degrees of freedom which were hidden in the auxiliary fields of the supersymmetric effective Lagrangian.

Midinfrared spectra of the nascent emissions were acquired at several heights above the fires with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) coupled to an open multipass cell. In this report, the results from smoldering combustion during 24 fires are presented including production of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, ethene, ethyne, propene, formaldehyde, 2-hydroxyethanal, methanol, phenol, acetic acid, formic acid, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, and carbonyl sulfide. These were the dominant products observed, and many have significant influence on atmospheric chemistry at the …
Human-Computer Partnership In Decision-Support Systems: Some Design Guidelines, Jens G. Pohl
Human-Computer Partnership In Decision-Support Systems: Some Design Guidelines, Jens G. Pohl
Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center
The design of useful human-computer collaborative decision-support systems requires some understanding of the behavioral and organizational characteristics of human problem solving practices. This paper identifies the principal areas in which computer-based decision making assistance is particularly attractive and critically examines several human problem solving traits that may not be appropriate for direct emulation in the computer-assisted environment. In particular, the author examines the manner in which emotions and hierarchical leadership structures could unnecessarily inhibit the realization of the full potential of a human-computer partnership. Finally, a number of guiding principles are proposed for the design of computer-based decision-support systems.
Invariant Subspaces And Hyper-Reflexivity For Free Semigroup Algebras, Kenneth R. Davidson, David R. Pitts
Invariant Subspaces And Hyper-Reflexivity For Free Semigroup Algebras, Kenneth R. Davidson, David R. Pitts
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
In this paper, we obtain a complete description of the invariant subspace structure of an interesting new class of algebras which we call free semigroup algebras. This enables us to prove that they are reflexive, and moreover to obtain a quantitative measure of the distance to these algebras in terms of the invariant subspaces. Such algebras are called hyper-reflexive. This property is very strong, but it has been established in only a very few cases. Moreover the prototypes of this class of algebras are the natural candidate for a non-commutative analytic Toeplitz algebra on n variables. The case we make …
Oval Intersections In Tilings On Surfaces, Dennis A. Schmidt
Oval Intersections In Tilings On Surfaces, Dennis A. Schmidt
Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)
A tiling is a covering by polygons, without gaps or overlapping, of a compact, orientable surface. We are particularly interested in tilings by triangles that generate a large symmetry group of the surface. An oval of the tiling is a simple, closed curve that is a union of edges of the tiling. We investigate the number of points of intersection of two ovals. We have found that the number of intersections is bounded when the subgroup of orientation preserving symmetries is abelian. However, there is no upper bound on the number of intersections in the non-abelian case.
Forming B1-XCX Semiconductor Layers By Chemical Vapor Deposition, Peter A. Dowben
Forming B1-XCX Semiconductor Layers By Chemical Vapor Deposition, Peter A. Dowben
Peter Dowben Publications
Active semiconductor devices including heterojunction diodes and thin film transistors are formed by PECVD deposition of a boron carbide thin film on an N-type substrate. The boron to carbon ratio of the deposited material is controlled so that the film has a suitable band gap energy. Boron carbides such as B4.7C, B7.2C and B19C have suitable band gap energies between 0.8 and 1.7 eV. The stoichiometry of the film can be selected by varying the partial pressure of precursor gases, such as nido pentaborane and methane. The precursor gas or gases are energized. e.g., …
Counting Ovals On A Symmetric Riemann Surface, Sean A. Broughton
Counting Ovals On A Symmetric Riemann Surface, Sean A. Broughton
Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)
Let S be a compact Riemann surface without boundary. A symmetry of S is an anti-conformal, involutary automorphism. Its fixed point set is a disjoint union of circles, each of which is called an oval. A method is presented for counting the ovals of a symmetry when S admits a large group G of automorphisms. The method involves only calculations in G, based on the geometric description of S/G, and the knowledge of the action of the symmetry on G.

Pseudocontinuations And The Backward Shift, Alexandru Aleman, Stefan Richter, William T. Ross
Department of Math & Statistics Technical Report Series
In this paper, we will examine the backward shift operator Lƒ = (ƒ – ƒ(0))/z on certain Banach spaces of analytic functions on the open unit disk D. In particular, for a (closed) subspace M for which LM ⊂ M, we wish to determine the spectrum, the point spectrum, and the approximate point spectrum of L|M. In order to do this, we will use the concept of "pseudocontinuation" of functions across the unit circle ∏.

Search For Neutrinoless Τ Decays Involving Π0 Or Η Mesons, G. Bonvicini, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cleo Collaboration
Kenneth Bloom Publications
We have searched for lepton flavor violating decays of the τ lepton using final states with an electron or a muon and one or two π0 or η mesons but no neutrinos. The data used in the search were collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.68 fb-1. No evidence for signals was found, resulting in much improved limits on the branching fractions for the one-meson modes and the first upper limits for the two-meson modes.

The glycoxidation products Nepsilon-(carboxymethyl)lysine and pentosidine increase in skin collagen with age and at an accelerated rate in diabetes. Their age-adjusted concentrations in skin collagen are correlated with the severity of diabetic complications. To determine the relative roles of increased glycation and/or oxidation in the accelerated formation of glycoxidation products in diabetes, we measured levels of amino acid oxidation products, distinct from glycoxidative modifications of amino acids, as independent indicators of oxidative stress and damage to collagen in aging and diabetes. We show that ortho-tyrosine and methionine sulfoxide are formed in concert with Nepsilon-(carboxymethyl)lysine and pentosidine during glycoxidation of collagen …

Predicting Electron Affinities With Density Functional Theory: Some Positive Results For Negative Ions, Gregory S. Tschumper, Henry F. Schaefer
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The atomic electron affinities of the eight first row (H,Li,...,F) atoms as well as the adiabatic electron affinities of 12 first row diatomic and 15 first row triatomic molecules were determined using six different densities functional or hybrid Hartree-Fock/density functional methods. The 35 species were selected for having relatively well-established experimental electron affinities. Harmonic zero-point vibrational energy corrected electron affinities are also reported for the diatomic and triatomic molecules. Equilibrium geometries and harmonic vibrational frequencies are given for the 27 molecules and their anions as determined with each density functional method. Discussion focuses on comparison of theoretical and experimental electron …

We evaluated aerial photography (full coverage, using fixed-wing aircraft) and aerial video (transects, using helicopter) surveys to estimate the population of Laughing Gull (Larus ahicilla) nests in Jamaica Bay, New York, during June 1992-1995. We counted 4,920 nests in the colony using aerial photography and estimated 5,367 nests using aerial video in 1992. In 1993-1995, we respectively counted 5,691,5,095, and 6,126 nests in the colony using aerial photography, and estimated from ground plots that our counts differed from the actual number of nests by means of -9% to 1%. Overall (1993-1995) correction factors (by which to multiply the aerial photography …
Numerical Observation Of A Tubular Phase In Anisotropic Membranes, Mark Bowick, Marco Falcioni, Gudmar Thorleifsson
Numerical Observation Of A Tubular Phase In Anisotropic Membranes, Mark Bowick, Marco Falcioni, Gudmar Thorleifsson
Physics - All Scholarship
We provide the first numerical evidence for the existence of a tubular phase, predicted by Radzihovsky and Toner (RT), for anisotropic tethered membranes without self-avoidance. Incorporating anisotropy into the bending rigidity of a simple model of a tethered membrane with free boundary conditions, we show that the model indeed has two phase transitions corresponding to the flat-to-tubular and tubular-to-crumpled transitions. For the tubular phase we measure the Flory exponent \nu_F and the roughness exponent \zet. We find \nu_F=0.305(14) and \zeta=0.895(60), which are in reasonable agreement with the theoretical predictions of RT --- \nu_F=1/4 and \zeta=1.
