Midwater Fishes And Shrimps As Competitors And Resource Partitioning In Low Latitude Oligotrophic Ecosystems, T. L. Hopkins, Tracey Sutton Apr 1998

Midwater Fishes And Shrimps As Competitors And Resource Partitioning In Low Latitude Oligotrophic Ecosystems, T. L. Hopkins, Tracey Sutton

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Oligotrophic tropical-subtropical oceanic regimes constitute the largest and most ancient ecosystem on earth, with these enormous areas being characterized by high faunal diversity. The stability and age of the ecosystem have enabled the evolution of many similar species niches where there is considerable overlap in niche parameters such as food and space, resulting in high species packing, especially in the epi- and mesopelagic zones. Competition for limited resources undoubtedly exists and has been described by MacArthur (1972; Geographical ecology, Harper and Row, New York) as diffuse competition where each species is impacted by many other species sharing the environment. A Diatom-Based Reconstruction Of Drought Intensity, Duration, And Frequency From Moon Lake, North Dakota: A Sub-Decadal Record Of The Last 2,300 Years, Kathleen R. Laird, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Brian F. Cumming Apr 1998

A Diatom-Based Reconstruction Of Drought Intensity, Duration, And Frequency From Moon Lake, North Dakota: A Sub-Decadal Record Of The Last 2,300 Years, Kathleen R. Laird, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Brian F. Cumming

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Diatom assemblages preserved in sediment cores from closed-basin lakes can provide high-resolution records of past hydrologic and climatic conditions, including long-term patterns in the intensity, duration, and frequency of droughts. At Moon Lake, a closed-basin lake in eastern North Dakota, a comparison of diatom-inferred salinity and the precipitation-based Bhalme-Mooley Drought Index (BMDI) over the last 100 years was highly significant, suggesting that the diatom record contains a sensitive archive of past climatic conditions. A sub-decadal record of inferred salinity for the past 2300 years indicates that extreme droughts of greater intensity than those during the 1930s “Dust Bowl” were more …

Quadratic Electro-Optic Effects In Bacteriorhodopsin: Measurement Of Γ(-Ω;0,0,Ω) In Dried Gelatin Thin Films, Mikio Yamazaki, Jerry Goodisman, Robert R. Birge Apr 1998

Quadratic Electro-Optic Effects In Bacteriorhodopsin: Measurement Of Γ(-Ω;0,0,Ω) In Dried Gelatin Thin Films, Mikio Yamazaki, Jerry Goodisman, Robert R. Birge

Chemistry - All Scholarship

Quadratic electro-optic effects (dc or low frequency Kerr effect) of bacteriorhodopsin dispersed in dried gelatin thin films are examined in the near resonance region at three wavelengths: 633, 647, and 676 nm. The films show relatively large quadratic electro-optic effects compared to other molecular dispersed systems. The purple membrane is fixed within the polymerized gelatin matrix, and we show that the electronic contribution to γ dominates over possible orientational contributions. At 676 nm. the quadratic electro-optic coefficient s1133( - ω;0,0,ω) is 6.7 × 10-20 m2/V2 and the third order nonlinear susceptibility X1133(3) …

Counting Structures In The Möbius Ladder, John P. Mcsorley Apr 1998

Counting Structures In The Möbius Ladder, John P. Mcsorley

Articles and Preprints

The Möbius ladder, Mn, is a simple cubic graph on 2n vertices. We present a technique which enables us to count exactly many different structures of Mn, and somewhat unifies counting in Mn. We also provide new combinatorial interpretations of some sequences, and ask some questions concerning extremal properties of cubic graphs.

Search For The Decay BDS1+(2536)X, M. Bishai, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cleo Collaboration Apr 1998

Search For The Decay B→DS1+(2536)X, M. Bishai, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cleo Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We have searched for the decay BDs1+ (2536)X and measured an upper limit for the inclusive branching fraction of B(BDs1+X) < 0.96% at the 90% confidence level. This limit is small compared with the total expected BD‾(*)D(*) KX rate. Assuming factorization, the Ds1+ 1 decay constant is constrained to be fDs1+ < 114 MeV at the 90% confidence level, at least 2.5 times smaller than that of Ds.

Measurement Of The Branching Fractions Of ΛC+→Pk̅N (Π), M. S. Alam, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cleo Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

Using data recorded by the CLEO-II detector at CESR, we report new measurements of the branching fractions for the decays of the charmed baryon Λc+ into pK-π+π0, pK0, pK0π+π-, and pK0π0, all measured relative to pK-π+. The relative branching fractions are 0.67±0.04±0.11,0.46±0.02±0.04,0.52±0.04±0.05, and 0.66±0.05±0.07, respectively.

Intermediate- To High-Energy Positrons Scattered By Alkali-Metal Atoms, David D. Reid, J. M. Wadehra Apr 1998

Intermediate- To High-Energy Positrons Scattered By Alkali-Metal Atoms, David D. Reid, J. M. Wadehra

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research Publications

We present calculations of the differential, integrated elastic, and total cross sections for positrons scattered from alkali-metal atoms. The energy of the positrons ranges from 10 eV to 1000 eV. In the calculations we use parameter-free model potentials for the correlation-polarization and absorption interactions. The absorption potential used for positron scattering is based on a quasifree model that we recently proposed and tested for the noble-gas targets. For positron–alkali-metal scattering the model potentials have produced reliable scattering cross sections over the extended range of impact energies when compared against the available experimental data.

Predicting Future Years Of Healthy Life For Older Adults, Paula Diehr Apr 1998

Predicting Future Years Of Healthy Life For Older Adults, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

Cost-effectiveness studies often need to compare the cost of a program to the lifetime benefits of the program, but estimates of lifetime benefits are not routinely available, especially for older adults. We used data from two large longitudinal studies of older adults (ages 65-100) to estimate transition probabilities from one health state to another, and used those probabilities to estimate the mean additional years of healthy life that an older adult of specified age, sex, and health status would experience. We found, for example, that 65-year-old women in excellent health can expect 16.8 years of healthy life in the future, …

The Age Of The Kirkdale Cave Palaeofauna, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Derek C. Ford Apr 1998

The Age Of The Kirkdale Cave Palaeofauna, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Derek C. Ford

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

The Kirkdale Cave palaeofauna represents the original and classic 'warm', interglacial mammalian cave deposit in Britain. Although long considered to be 'Ipswichian' in age, no previous attempts to obtain radiometric dates have been recorded. Here we report a uranium-series disequilibrium date of 121,000 ± 4000 yr BP on a flowstone capping that overlay the original bone bed. The precision of the date exceeds that obtained at any other British Interglacial cave site, and permits tentative correlation with the high precision ice core records now available.
