An optical system utilizing the photoinduced dichroism in a bacteriorhodopsin film has been demonstrated for the optical implementation of wavelet transforms. The dichroism, induced by the image of a wavelet filter on a bacteriorhodopsin film leads to polarization rotation of the Fourier components of an image. The polarization-rotated Fourier components of an input scene are analyzed with a polarizer to give the wavelet transform components. The dichroism is induced with beams whose profiles are determined by wavelet filters in order to perform the optical wavelet transform.

Surface tension and the length δ (distance between the Gibbs surface of tension R_s and the equimolar surface R_e) of simple liquid droplet (Lennard-Jones and Yukawa) are computed over a wide range of droplet sizes up to about 4x10⁶ molecules. The study is based on the Gibbs theory of capillarity combined with the density–functional approach to gas–liquid nucleation. Since this method provides behavior of the surface tension fully consistent with the tension of the planner surface, the constant in Tolman’s equation δ_x can be determined unequivocally from the asymptotic behavior of σ _s . All symmetry groups for surfaces of genus 2 and 3 are known. In this paper, we classify symmetry groups and tiling groups with three branch points for surfaces of genus 4 and 5. Also, a class of symmetry groups that are not tiling groups is presented, as well as a class of odd order non-abelian tiling groups.

This overview examines available circum-Antarctic glacial history archives on land, related to developments after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). It considers the glacial-stratigraphic and morphologic records and also biostratigraphical information from moss banks, lake sediments and penguin rookeries, with some reference to relevant glacial marine records. It is concluded that Holocene environmental development in Antarctica differed from that in the Northern Hemisphere. The initial deglaciation of the shelf areas surrounding Antarctica took place before 10000 C-14 yrs before present(sp), and was controlled by rising global sea level. This review assesses the circumpolar occurrence of emerged marine macrofossils and sediments from Antarctic coastal areas in relation to Late Quaternary climate changes. Radiocarbon ages of the macrofossils, which are interpreted in view of the complexities of the Antarctic marine radiocarbon reservoir and resolution of this dating technique, show a bimodal distribution. The data indicate that marine species inhabited coastal environments from at least 35000 to 20000 yr sp, during Marine Isotope Stage 3 when extensive iceberg calving created a 'meltwater lid' over the Southern Ocean. In January 1997 a large fleet of NASA and US military satellites provided the most complete observations to date of the changes in >2 MeV electrons during a geomagnetic storm. Observations at geosynchronous orbit revealed a somewhat unusual two-peaked enhancement in relativistic electron fluxes [ Reeves et al., 1998]. In the heart of the radiation belts at L ≈ 4, however, there was a single enhancement followed by a gradual decay. Radial profiles from the POLAR and GPS satellites revealed three distinct phases. Profile comparison of the Stokes parameters V and I is a powerful tool for maser data analysis, which provides the first direct methods for unambiguous determination of (1) the maser saturation stage, (2) the amplification optical depth and intrinsic Doppler width of unsaturated masers, and (3) the comparative magnitudes of Zeeman splitting and Doppler line width. Circular polarization recently detected in OH 1720 MHz emission from the Galactic center appears to provide the first direct evidence for maser saturation.

Pesticides used in urban environments can be transported in runoff to downstream waters and cause adverse environmental consequences. This experiment assessed the effects of post-application irrigation depth (0, 6.4, and 12.7 mm) and formulation (liquid and granular) on concentration and transport of diazinon (a pesticide commonly used for lawn insect control) in runoff from “tall” fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) plots. The post-application irrigation was applied using rainfall simulators immediately following diazinon application. The rainfall simulators were again used approximately 2 h after diazinon application to apply the equivalent of a heavy rainfall (64 mm/h for approximately 1.5 h) to generate …

The Tour Operator's Fishing Working Group (TOFWG) was established by the Hon Monty House MLA, Minister for Fisheries, in recognition of the growing importance of this element of the tourism industy and in recognition of the need to ensure that the development of this industry occurs in an ecologically sustainable framework across the Sate. The recommendations outlined in this report establish a management framework within which the aquatic charter industry may continue to develop, and which will ensure the long-term sustainability of the natural resources on which the industry is based.

The energy-equation approach used to prove the existence of the global attractor by establishing the so-called asymptotic compactness property of the semigroup is considered, and a general formulation that can handle a number of weakly damped hyperbolic equations and parabolic equations on either bounded or unbounded spatial domains is presented. as examples, three specific and physically relevant problems are considered, namely the flows of a second-grade fluid, the flows of a Newtonian fluid in an infinite channel past an obstacle, and a weakly damped, forced Korteweg-de Vries equation on the whole line.

The average track model describes the response of physical and biological systems using radial dose distribution as the key physical descriptor. We report on an extension of this model to describe the average distribution of electron spectra as a function of radial distance from an ion. We present calculations of these spectra for ions of identical linear energy transfer (LET), but dissimilar charge and velocity to evaluate the differences in electron spectra from these ions. A widely employed method of reducing cement production costs is the substitution of traditional fuels with alternative and waste-derived fuels to heat the cement kiln. The paper presents the results of an analysis of current pollutant emissions from "Katowice" Steelworks and Coke Plant "Przyjaźń" in the Dąbrowa Górnicza (Poland) and calculations of spreading of these pollutants in the atmosphere. The research have shown that there is a reasonable possibility of reducing the existing protective zone around these plants, which should significantly reduce the costs incurred for the purchase of the land and management of the zone area.

The paper presents the results of research related to the modeling of physicochemical phenomena occurring in the ground-layer of the atmosphere in terms of ozone formation. For this purpose, the box model was used, in which the computational area is defined as a space designated by a steady surface and a variable height. Conducted in Nowy Sącz (Poland) experiment confirmed the possibility of using this type of model to diagnose and possibly forecasting ozone concentrations in any area of ​​calculation. Simultaneous electrophysiological and behavioral studies were performed on 21–32 day old juvenile medaka (Oryzias latipes) exposed at sublethal concentrations to organic chemicals representing various modes of action. Non-invasive recordings were made of the electrical impulses generated within giant neuronal Mauthner cells, associated interneurons and motoneurons, and axial musculature, all of which initiate the startle or ‘escape’ response in fish. Timing in ms between these electrical sequelae was measured for each fish before and after 24 and 48 h exposure to a chemical. Carbaryl and phenol affected Mauthner cell to motoneuron transmission while chlorpyrifos, carbaryl, phenol and 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP) showed neuromuscular …

This paper demonstrates a new approach for terrain representation: multiresolution surfaces based on wavelets and the process of multiresolution analysis. Because they are based on mathematical surfaces, multiresolution surfaces gain the benefits of surfaces (more level of detail control, increased number of possible resolutions, easier updates of a dynamic terrain) that lead to fewer correlation errors both in non-networked and networked simulations. Furthermore, the power of multiple resolutions (at little added cost) reduces network transmission costs and provides a framework for the use of dynamic terrain in shared virtual worlds.

Given an irreducible inclusion of factors with finite index N ⊂ M, where M is of type III_λ1/m, N of type III_λ1/n, 0 < λ < 1, and m,n are relatively prime positive integers, we will prove that if N ⊂ M satisfies a commuting square condition, then its structure can be characterized by using fixed point algebras and crossed products of automorphisms acting on the middle inclusion of factors associated with N ⊂ M. Relations between N ⊂ M and a certain G-kernel on subfactors are also discussed.
