In summer 1995, in collaboration with the deep multi-channel seismic profiling project around the island of Taiwan, anonshore-offshore wide-angle deep seismic profiling experiment was conducted in Taiwan. The results are expected to provide the first complete seismic images of the deep crustal structure for a better understanding of the Taiwan orogeny and subduction-collision system. The experiment consists of three profiles, one along each of the central and southern cross-island highways and another on the south-link highway of the island. For the first two lines, 35 three-component portable seismographs were deployed along each of the 116 and 135 km-long profiles onshore, …

Mapped Karst Ground-Water Basins In The Somerset 30 X 60 Minute Quadrangle, James C. Currens, Joseph A. Ray

Map and Chart--KGS

This map shows karst ground-water basins in the Somerset quadrangle, determined primarily by ground-water tracer studies. It can be used to quickly identify the ground-water basins and springs to which a site may drain. Major springs and the relative size of their catchment areas can be evaluated for potential as water supplies. The map also serves as a geographic index to literature on karst ground water in the area.

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Several specimens of the isocrinid crinoid Neocrinus decorus were collected from a depth of 420 m off Bahamas Islands with the research submersible Johnson Sea Link. To study growth rates, these specimens were tagged, deployed and then recovered 250 days later. The average growth rate of stalk length is 10.8 cm.year−1 with a maximum value at 14.3 cm.year−1. These results allow us to propose a model of growth and regeneration for stalked crinoids in which the energy allocation is modulated through time to the arms and the stalk. Following arm autotomy, in order to re-establish optimum filtration …

Higher-Order And Next-Nearest-Neighbor Néel Anisotropies , Y.T. Millev, Ralph Skomski, J. Kirschner Sep 1998

Higher-Order And Next-Nearest-Neighbor Néel Anisotropies , Y.T. Millev, Ralph Skomski, J. Kirschner

Ralph Skomski Publications

The problem of higher-order Néel anisotropies is solved by exploiting the addition theorem for spherical functions. A key advantage of the present approach is the orthonormal character of the expansion of the magnetic energy that simplifies the formalism and makes possible the treatment of nonideal morphologies as well. Explicit expressions for second-, fourth-, and sixth-order anisotropies are obtained for ideal bulk of fcc and bcc symmetry as well as for (001), (110), and (111) surfaces with nearest-neighbor (NN) Néel interactions. The systematic examination of the pair model involves partition by species of inequivalent sites, interaction spheres, and orders in the …

Magma Traps And Driving Pressure: Consequences For Pluton Shape And Emplacement In An Extensional Regime, John Patrick Hogan, Jonathan D. Price, M. Charles Gilbert Sep 1998

Magma Traps And Driving Pressure: Consequences For Pluton Shape And Emplacement In An Extensional Regime, John Patrick Hogan, Jonathan D. Price, M. Charles Gilbert

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The level of emplacement and final form of felsic and mafic igneous rocks of the Wichita Mountains Igneous Province, southwestern Oklahoma, U.S.A. Are discussed in light of magma driving pressure, lithostatic load, and crustal magma traps. Deposition of voluminous A-type rhyolites upon an eroded gabbroic substrate formed a subhorizontal strength anisotropy that acted as a crustal magma trap for subsequent rising felsic and mafic magma. Intruded along this crustal magma trap are the A-type sheet granites (length/thickness 100:1) of the Wichita Granite Group, of which the Mount Scott Granite sheet is typical, and smaller plutons of biotite bearing Roosevelt Gabbro. …

Can Photoemission Accurately Probe The Bulk Electronic Structure Of The Complex Oxides?, Jaewu Choi, C. Waldfried, Sy_Hwang Liou, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

The surface of the complex oxides, in particular the manganese perovskites, is dominated by a different free enthalpy at the surface. This can be demonstrated by surface segregation after annealing the samples. By comparing relative x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy intensities of the manganese perovskite La1-xCaxMnO3 (x=0.1, 0.35) for different emission angles, the profile of elemental concentration was determined. Analysis shows evidence for pronounced surface segregation of calcium. Our results suggest that there are strong differences between surface and bulk enthalpies without segregation or surface relaxation. This is consistent with the previously observed surface resonance …

Minimum Cross-Entropy Approximation For Modeling Of Highly Intertwining Data Sets At Subclass Levels, Qiuming Zhu Sep 1998

Minimum Cross-Entropy Approximation For Modeling Of Highly Intertwining Data Sets At Subclass Levels, Qiuming Zhu

Computer Science Faculty Publications

We study the problem of how to accurately model the data sets that contain a number of highly intertwining sets in terms of their spatial distributions. Applying the Minimum Cross-Entropy minimization technique, the data sets are placed into a minimum number of subclass clusters according to their high intraclass and low interclass similarities. The method leads to a derivation of the probability density functions for the data sets at the subclass levels. These functions then, in combination, serve as an approximation to the underlying functions that describe the statistical features of each data set.

Pasture runoff can contribute to elevated concentrations of nutrients, solids, and bacteria in downstream waters. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of vegetative filter strip (VFS) length on concentrations and transport of nitrogen, phosphorus, solids and fecal coliform in runoff from plots treated with cattle manure. Three plots with dimensions of 2.4 × 30.5 m were used. The upper 12.2 m of each plot was treated with cattle manure, while the lower 18.3 m acted as a VFS. Runoff produced by rainfall simulators was sampled at VFS lengths of 0, 6.1, 12.2, and 18.3 m and …

Climate Change And Nebraska Sep 1998

Climate Change And Nebraska

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

The earth's climate is predicted to change because human activities are altering the chemical composition of the atmosphere through the buildup of greenhouse gases - primarily carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbons. The heat-trapping property of these greenhouse gases is undisputed. Although there is uncertainty about exactly how and when the earth's climate will respond to enhanced concentrations of greenhouse gases, observations indicate that detectable changes are under way. There most likely will be increases in temperature and changes in precipitation, soil moisture, and sea level, which could have adverse effects on many ecological systems, as well as on …

Track Structure Model For Radial Distributions Of Electron Spectra And Event Spectra From High-Energy Ions, F. A. Cucinotta, Robert Katz, J. W. Wilson Sep 1998

Track Structure Model For Radial Distributions Of Electron Spectra And Event Spectra From High-Energy Ions, F. A. Cucinotta, Robert Katz, J. W. Wilson

Robert Katz Publications

An analytic method is described for evaluating the average radial electron spectrum and the radial and total frequency-event spectrum for high-energy ions. For high-energy ions, indirect events make important contributions to frequency-event spectra. The method used for evaluating indirect events is to fold the radial electron spectrum with measured frequency-event spectrum for photons or electrons. The contribution from direct events is treated using a spatially restricted linear energy transfer (LET). We find that high-energy heavy ions have a significantly reduced frequency-averaged lineal energy (YF) compared to LET, while relativistic protons have a significantly increased YF and dose-averaged lineal energy (YD) …

Bubble Fractionation Of Enantiomers From Solution Using Molecularly Imprinted Polymers As Collectors, Daniel W. Armstrong, J. M. Schneiderheinze, Y. S. Hwang, B. Sellergren

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Adsorptive bubble separation methods have been used to enrich components from both heterogeneous and homogeneous solutions. These methods are particularly effective for processing large solution volumes at low cost Previous work demonstrated that chiral, surface-active collectors could be used to enrich enantiomers from homogeneous solution in a foam fractionation process. In a significant extension of this work, the use of highly selective molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and heterogeneous solutions for the bubble flotation of enantiomers was evaluated. The high selectivity and ease of recycling of the MIP make this a potentially powerful approach for process-scale separations from large-volume bulk solutions. …

Immunological Relationship Between The Class I Epitope Of Streptococcal M Protein And Myosin, Anthony Quinn, Kent Ward, Vincent A. Fischetti, Mark E. Hemric, Medeleine W. Cunningham Sep 1998

Immunological Relationship Between The Class I Epitope Of Streptococcal M Protein And Myosin, Anthony Quinn, Kent Ward, Vincent A. Fischetti, Mark E. Hemric, Medeleine W. Cunningham

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The class I epitope of streptococcal M protein is an epidemiological marker for acute rheumatic fever (ARF)-associated serotypes of group A streptococci and is recognized by anti-M protein monoclonal antibody (MAb) 10B6. Using MAb 10B6, we determined the relationship between the class I epitope of M protein and the a-helical coiled-coil protein myosin. MAb 10B6 reacted by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and Western blotting with human cardiac myosin and rabbit skeletal myosin and its heavy meromyosin (HMM) subfragment. Overlapping synthetic peptides of M5 protein were used to identify the region of M5 protein recognized by MAb 10B6. Two C repeat peptides …

Sites on antibodies having affinity for photoaffinity compounds, in particular purine or azidopurine containing compounds are taught. Such photoaffinity sites are contained on a conserved region of different antibody molecules. These sites provide for the site-specific attachment of nucleotide photoaffinity compounds to antibodies, e.g., ATP- or GTP-analog photoaffinity compounds by photochemical means. These nucleotide photoaffinity compounds may additionally be attached to molecules having a desired therapeutic or diagnostic activity, and the resultant conjugates used as diagnostics or therapeutics.

Optimizing Amplifier Placements In A Multiwavelength Optical Lan/Man: The Equally Powered-Wavelengths Case, Byrav Ramamurthy, Jason Iness, Biswanath Mukherjee

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) provides the ability to utilize the enormous bandwidth offered by optical networks, using today’s electronics. WDM-based optical networks employing passive-star couplers have been proposed for deployment in local and metropolitan areas. Optical amplification is often required in such networks to compensate for the signal attenuation along the fiber links and the splitting and coupling losses in the network. However, an optical amplifier has constraints on the maximum gain and the maximum output power it can supply; thus optical amplifier placement becomes a challenging problem. A simplifying assumption for analytical tractability requires that all wavelengths, present at …

Localization Of Sodium, Potassium-Adenosine Triphosphatase In The Cerebral Cortex Of Developing Rats, Maki Ujiie

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Active transport via Na+, K+-ATPase plays an important role in establishing and maintaining proper ionic gradient across all mammalian cell membranes. A strict regulation of Na+, and K+ ion levels is especially important in excitable cells such as neurons and myocytes. Inhibition of the enzyme is associated with several pathological conditions and has serious detrimental effects on cerebral cortical cells. Yet the enzyme appears to be limited in amount and distribution in newborn rats. In this study, Na+, K+- ATPase expression and distribution in early postnatal rats were studied …

Quality Of Surface And Ground Water And Best Management Practices, Kenneth F. Steele Sep 1998

Quality Of Surface And Ground Water And Best Management Practices, Kenneth F. Steele

Technical Reports

Arkansas is fortunate to have outstanding water resources, especially in terms of water quality. However, this is not to say that there are no problems. The Arkansas Water Resources Center (AWRC) in cooperation with other state and federal agencies is characterizing our water resources and providing data important to the wise use of these resources. One wise use of our water resources is to mitigate the impact of non-point sources of pollution on water quality through the use of best management practices. These proceedings address not only the characterization of the quality of ground and surface water but also address …
