It has been estimated that 48% of the code and 50% of the implementation time required in new applications are directly related to the user interface (Myers and Rosson, 1992). Our research shows that most undergraduate courses that consider graphical user interfaces (GUIs) have no implementation component. Most undergraduate programs (85%) that include GUI implementation are offered at the Doctoral II Carnegie classification or above. Appropriate Web and print references and other materials given in this paper will help faculty at smaller institutions offer such courses.

Comparative Developmental Toxicity Of Planar Polychlorinated Biphenyl Congeners In Chickens, American Kestrels, And Common Terns, David J. Hoffman, Mark J. Melancon, Patrice N. Klein, John D. Eisemann, James W. Spann
Comparative Developmental Toxicity Of Planar Polychlorinated Biphenyl Congeners In Chickens, American Kestrels, And Common Terns, David J. Hoffman, Mark J. Melancon, Patrice N. Klein, John D. Eisemann, James W. Spann
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The effects of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners, PCB 126 (3,3′, 4,4′, 5-pentaCB) and PCB 77 (3,3′4,4′-tetraCB), were examined in chicken (Gallus gallus), American kestrel (Falco sparverius), and common tern (Sterna hirundo) embryos through hatching, following air cell injections on day 4. PCB 126 caused malformations and edema in chickens starting at 0.3 ppb, in kestrels at 2.3 to 23 ppb, but in terns only at levels affecting hatching success (44 ppb). Extent of edema was most severe in chickens and least in terns. Defects of the beak were common in all species but with …

Cattle Guards Reduce White-Tailed Deer Crossings Through Fence Openings, J. L. Belant, T. W. Seamans, C.P. Dwyer
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
In response to increased white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) encroachment on airports, we evaluated the effectiveness of cattle guards as deer exclusion devices. We conducted three experiments in a 2200 ha fenced facility in northern Ohio with high (91/km2) deer densities during 1994 ± 1995. In each experiment, we monitored deer crossings at two or three cattle guards (4.6[L] x 3[W]x 0.5 or 1.0[D] m) constructed at fence openings for 2 weeks pre- and post-installation. For each experiment, the mean daily number of deer crossings after installation of cattle guards was reduced (P < 0.01) by > 88% compared with …

Predation On Atlantic Salmon Smolts By Striped Bass After Dam Passage, Bradley F. Blackwell, Francis Juanes
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
We documented predation on smolts of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar by striped bass Morone saxatilis foraging in the tailrace of the Essex Dam on the Merrimack River, Lawrence, Massachusetts, and assessed factors that may affect smolt susceptibility to predation. During 6 d of diurnal angling from 6 to 28 May, we captured 212 striped bass, 41 of which contained prey remains. More than 48% of striped bass that contained prey had consumed smolts. Atlantic salmon smolts composed more than 80% of the total mass of prey remains recovered and included both individuals of stocked-fry and stocked-smolt origin. Based on information …

Annual And Daily Meteorological Cycles At High Altitude On A Tropical Mountain, Douglas R. Hardy, Mathias Vuille, Carsten Braun, Frank Keimig, Raymond S. Bradley
Raymond S Bradley
An automated weather station was installed in October 1996 at the summit of Nevado Sajama, located in the western Andean Cordillera of Bolivia (6542 m, 18°06¢S, 68°53¢W). Meteorological conditions on the mountain are being observed to improve the calibration of geochemical variations within tropical ice cores. This article documents the design and operation of the station and presents a discussion of measurements made through the first annual cycle. Variables analyzed include pressure, incoming solar radiation, air temperature, humidity, wind, and snow accumulation. Large diurnal fluctuations were recorded in most variables, which is not unexpected given the location at 18°S; the …
An Implementation Of The Vesta Parallel File System Api On The Galley Parallel File System, Matthew P. Carter, David Kotz
An Implementation Of The Vesta Parallel File System Api On The Galley Parallel File System, Matthew P. Carter, David Kotz
Computer Science Technical Reports
To demonstrate the flexibility of the Galley parallel file system and to analyze the efficiency and flexibility of the Vesta parallel file system interface, we implemented Vesta's application-programming interface on top of Galley. We implemented the Vesta interface using Galley's file-access methods, whose design arose from extensive testing and characterization of the I/O requirements of scientific applications for high-performance multiprocessors. We used a parallel CPU, parallel I/O, out-of-core matrix-multiplication application to test the Vesta interface in both its ability to specify data access patterns and in its run-time efficiency. In spite of its powerful ability to specify the distribution of …
Problems In Harmonic Function Theory, Ronald A. Walker
Problems In Harmonic Function Theory, Ronald A. Walker
Honors Theses
Harmonic Function Theory is a field of differential mathematics that has both many theoretical constructs and physical connections, as well as its store of classical problems.
One such problem is the Dirichlet Problem. While the proof of the existence of a solution is well-founded on basic theory, and general methods for polynomial solutions have been well studied, much ground is still yet to be overturned. In this paper we focus on the examination, properties and computation methods and limitations, of solutions for rational boundary functions.
Another area that we shall study is the properties and generalizations of the zero sets …

Anthraquinone Protects Rice Seed From Birds, Michael L. Avery, John S. Humphrey, Thomas M. Primus, David G. Decker, Arlene P. Mcgrane
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Application of bird-repellent chemicals to seed prior to planting is one possible approach to reducing bird damage to rice. Anthraquinone is a promising seed treatment compound, and in this paper we describe a sequence of tests evaluating a formulated commercial anthraquinone product. In l-cup cage tests, rice consumption by individual male red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) and female boat-tailed grackles (Quiscalus major) was reduced 64-93% by 0.5 and 1.0% (g/g) anthraquinone treatments. Daily rice consumption by single male boat-tailed grackles tested in large enclosures was reduced from > 14 g in pretreatment to < 1 g by a 1.0% treatment. One of five test birds ate nothing during a 1 day post-treatment session. In a 7 day trial within a 0.2 ha flight pen, a group of four male grackles consumed 1.3% of anthraquinone-treated rice seed compared to 84.1% of sorghum, a nonpreferred alternate food. At two study sites in southwestern Louisiana, loss of rice sprouts in 2 ha plots sown with anthraquinone-treated seed was 0 and 12% compared to losses of 33% and 98% in nearby untreated plots. The formulation performed well at every stage of testing, and further development of anthraquinone products for bird-damage management is warranted.

One enigmatic class of objects whose structures are interesting and only recently explored are active galactic nuclei (AGN). These are galaxies in which massive black holes sit at the center and accrete matter. The term "active" refers to energetic processes which are not directly attributable to stars and which occur in the innermost portions of galaxies. Astrophysicists have developed general descriptions of AGN, but details about these objects remain incomplete. Notably, the thermal and ionization structures of AGN accretion disks and the geometries of the circum-source clouds which surround the black hole and comprise an important portion of the energy …

Observationally, white dwarf stars are a remarkably homogeneous class with a minimum observed Teff ∼ 4000 K. Theoretically, the physics that determines their cooling timescales is relatively more straightforward than that which determines main-sequence evolutionary timescales. As a result, the white dwarf luminosity function has for the last decade been used as a probe of the age and star formation rate of the Galactic disk, providing an estimated local disk age of ∼ 10 Gyr with estimated total uncertainties of roughly 20%. A long-standing criticism of the technique is that the reality of the reported downturn in the luminosity function …

Dartmouth Scholarship
PG 1002+506 is found to be a Be star, one of three found so far by the Palomar-Green survey. Its spectrum is classified as a B5 ± 1 Ve, with Teff = 14,900 ± 1200, log g = 4.2 ± 0.2, and v sin i = 340 ± 50 km s-1. At b = +51°, its height above the Galactic plane would therefore be z = +10.8 kpc, putting this apparently young, rapidly rotating star well into the Galactic halo. Its heliocentric radial velocity is found to be -2 ± 15 km s-1, consistent with …

Classification Of Hereditary Matrices, Jim Agler, J. W. Helton, Mark Stankus
Mathematics
A classical approach used to obtain basic facts in the theory of square matrices involves an analysis of the relationship between polynomials p in one variable and square matrices T such that p(T) = 0. We consider matrices and operators which satisfy a different type of polynomial constraint. Let H be a complex Hilbert space, T be a bounded linear transformation of H, T* be the adjoint of T, and C[x, y] be the algebra of polynomials in x and y with complex coefficients. For a polynomial p E C[x, y] in …

Relationship Between Continuous Aerosol Measurements And Firn Core Chemistry Over A 10-Year Period At The South Pole, M H. Bergin, E A. Meyerson, Jack E. Dibb, Paul A. Mayewski
Earth Sciences
Before ice core chemistry can be used to estimate past atmospheric chemistry it is necessary to establish an unambiguous link between concentrations of chemical species in the air and snow. For the first time a continuous long-term record of aerosol properties (aerosol light scattering coefficient, σsp, and Ångström exponent, å) at the South Pole are compared with the chemical record from a high resolution firn core (∼10 samples per year) covering the period from 1981 to 1991. Seasonal signals in å, associated with winter minima due to coarse mode seasalt and summer maxima due to accumulation mode sulfate …

Evidence For A Scalar Kappa(900) Resonance In Pi-K Scattering, Joseph Schechter, Deirdre Black, Amir H. Fariborz, Francesco Sannino
Physics - All Scholarship
Motivated by the 1/N_c\ expansion, we study a simple model in which the pi-K scattering amplitude is the sum of a current-algebra contact term and resonance pole exchanges. This phenomenological model is crossing symmetric and, when a putative light strange scalar meson, kappa, is included, satisfies the unitarity bounds to well above 1 GeV. The model also features chiral dynamics, vector meson dominance and appropriate interference between the established scalar K*(1430) resonance and its predicted background. We briefly discuss the physical significance of the results and directions for further work.

Computer Science and Software Engineering
This paper reviews on-going collaborative efforts between the Colorado School of Mines and Clark-Atlanta University in cooperative assistance for coordination and control of multiple vehicles. It reports on progress in developing an intelligent assistance agent (IAA) for aiding a human operator in diagnosing problems and generating recovery strategies in remote ground robots. The current work has focused on the identification and incorporation of categories of additional information from multiple robots and other agents. These categories are: mission-related sources, such as peer robots working nearby; facility-related sources, such as security cameras; and opportunistically available agents, such as overhead satellites or humans …

Lateral force microscopy in the wearless regime was used to study the friction behavior of a lipid monolayer on mica. In the monolayer, condensed domains with long-range orientational order of the lipid molecules were present. The domains revealed unexpectedly strong friction anisotropies and non-negligible friction asymmetries. The angular dependency of these effects correlated well with the tilt direction of the alkyl chains of the monolayer, as determined by electron diffraction and Brewster angle microscopy. The molecular tilt causing these frictional effects was less than 15 degrees, demonstrating that even small molecular tilts can make a major contribution to friction.
