Decentralized And Adaptive Sensor Data Routing, Mengxia Zhu
Decentralized And Adaptive Sensor Data Routing, Mengxia Zhu
LSU Master's Theses
Wireless sensor network (WSN) has been attracting research efforts due to the rapidly increasing applications in military and civilian fields. An important issue in wireless sensor network is how to send information in an efficient and adaptive way. Information can be directly sent back to the base station or through a sequence of intermediate nodes. In the later case, it becomes the problem of routing. Current routing protocols can be categorized into two groups, namely table-drive (proactive) routing protocols and source-initiated on-demand (reactive) routing. For ad hoc wireless sensor network, routing protocols must deal with some unique constraints such as …
Flow Patterns In A Two-Roll Mill, Christopher Hills
Flow Patterns In A Two-Roll Mill, Christopher Hills
Articles
The two-dimensional flow of a Newtonian fluid in a rectangular box that contains two disjoint, independently-rotating, circular boundaries is studied. The flow field for this two-roll mill is determined numerically using a finite-difference scheme over a Cartesian grid with variable horizontal and vertical spacing to accommodate satisfactorily the circular boundaries. To make the streamfunction numerically determinate we insist that the pressure field is everywhere single-valued. The physical character, streamline topology and transitions of the flow are discussed for a range of geometries, rotation rates and Reynolds numbers in the underlying seven-parameter space. An account of a preliminary experimental study of …

Some Irrational Generalised Moonshine From Orbifolds, Rossen Ivanov, Michael Tuite
Articles
We verify the Generalised Moonshine conjectures for some irrational modular functions for theMonster centralisers related to the Harada-Norton, Held, M12 and L3(3) simple groups based on certain orbifolding constraints. We find explicitly the fixing groups of the hauptmoduls arising in each case.
Rational Generalized Moonshine From Abelian Orbifoldings Of The Moonshine Module, Rossen Ivanov, Michael Tuite
Rational Generalized Moonshine From Abelian Orbifoldings Of The Moonshine Module, Rossen Ivanov, Michael Tuite
Articles
We consider orbifoldings of the Moonshine Module with respect to the abelian group generated by a pair of commuting Monster group elements with one of prime order p = 2, 3, 5, 7 and the other of order pk for k = 1 or k prime. We show that constraints arising from meromorphic orbifold conformal field theory allow us to demonstrate that each orbifold partition function with rational coefficients is either constant or is a hauptmodul for an explicitly found modular fixing group of genus zero. We thus confirm in the cases considered the Generalised Moonshine conjectures for all rational …
Surficial Geology And Geomorphology Of The Western Olympus Range, Antarctica: Implications For Ice-Sheet History, Brett Vandenheuvel
Surficial Geology And Geomorphology Of The Western Olympus Range, Antarctica: Implications For Ice-Sheet History, Brett Vandenheuvel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A widespread erosion surface passes across bedrock and sedimentary deposits in the western Dry Valleys sector of the Transantarctic Mountains (TAM), southern Victoria Land, Antarctica. The surface includes stoss-and-lee slopes, channels, potholes, scoured basins, and corrugated bedrock. These features have been taken to represent subglacial meltwater erosion beneath a greatly expanded East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) in the mid-Miocene (Denton et al. 1984, Marchant et al. 1993a). Sedimentary deposits that are typically associated with ice-sheet wastage, such as outwash, are not present on the erosion surface. The lack of these deposits indicates that the expanded ice-sheet postulated to be responsible …

Picturing Nature: Education, Ornithology And Photography In The Life Of Cordelia Stanwood: 1865-1958, Cynthia Watkins Richardson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The field of environmental history, with a few exceptions, has neglected gendered analysis; in addition, several women's histories have analyzed a few environmental issues, but disregard environmental scholarship. In the joining of women's and environmental history, this dissertation examines the life of one woman, Cordelia J. Stanwood of Ellsworth, Maine (1865-1958), to determine how a woman could use nature to transcend the social limits of domesticity in the early twentieth century. Research of her correspondence, published writing, photography and forty years of field notes reveals that like many other women, she took advantage of technology and evolving ideas about womanhood …
A Study Of Radon In Air And Water In Maine Schools, Mary Jo Norris
A Study Of Radon In Air And Water In Maine Schools, Mary Jo Norris
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The transfer coefficient of radon from water to air was investigated in schools. Kitchens, bathrooms and locker rooms were studied for seven schools in Maine. Simulations were done in water-use rooms where radon in air detectors were in place. Quantities measured were radon in water (270-24500 F) and air (0-80 q), volume of water used, emissivities (0.01-0.99) and ventilation rates (0.012-0.066A). Variation throughout the room of the radon concentration was found. Values calculated for the transfer coefficient for kitchens and baths were ranged from 9.6 x to 2.0 x The transfer coefficient was calculated using these parameters and was also …

A Baiting System For Delivery Of An Oral Plague Vaccine To Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs, Terry E. Creekmore, Tonie E. Rocke, Jerry Hurley
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Laboratory and field studies were conducted between July and October 1999 to identify bait preference, biomarker efficacy, and bait acceptance rates for delivering an oral plague vaccine to black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus). Twenty juvenile captive prairie dogs were offered alfalfa baits containing either alfalfa, alfalfa and 5% molasses, or alfalfa, 5% molasses and 4% salt. Based on the results of these trials we selected a bait containing alfalfa, 7% molasses, and 1% salt for field trials to determine bait acceptance rates by free-ranging animals. The biomarkers DuPont Blue dye, iophenoxic acid, and tetracycline hydrochloride were orally administered …
Review Of Determination Of Organic Compounds In Soils, Sediments And Sludges By T. R. Crompton, John J. Johnston
Review Of Determination Of Organic Compounds In Soils, Sediments And Sludges By T. R. Crompton, John J. Johnston
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
T. R. Crompton has accomplished the Herculean task of summarizing the literature (up to 1998) for the determination of organic and organometallic substances in soils, aquatic, and marine sediments and sludge. Although previous books address the analysis of such compounds in water, this is the first book dedicated to the analysis of pollutants in soils, sediments, and sludges, matrices that typically contain a variety of interfering compounds and offer significant analytical challenges. Overall, the book is relatively easy to read; the “camera ready” manuscript produced by the author contains clear tables, figures, and font. Classes of compounds addressed in this …

Safety Of Brucella Abortus Strain Rb51 Vaccine In Non-Target Ungulates And Coyotes, Terry J. Kreeger, Thomas J. Deliberto, Steven C. Olsen, William H. Edwards, Walter E. Cook
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Brucellosis is endemic in free-ranging elk (Cervus elaphus) and bison (Bison bison) in the Greater Yellowstone Area (GYA; USA). It is possible that an oral brucellosis vaccine could be developed and disseminated in the GYA to reduce disease transmission. Should this occur, non-target species other than elk and bison may come in contact with the vaccine resulting in morbidity or mortality. To assess biosafety, bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis; n=10), pronghorn (Antilocapra americana; n=9), mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus; n=11), moose (Alces alces shirasi; n=10), and …

We have collected and analyzed a series of water samples from three closed-basin lakes (Lakes Bonney, Fryxell, and Hoare) in Taylor Valley, Antarctica, and the streams that flow into them. In all three lakes, the hypolimnetic waters have different 87Sr/86Sr ratios than the surface waters, with the deep water of Lakes Fryxell and Hoare being less radiogenic than the surface waters. The opposite occurs in Lake Bonney. The Lake Fryxell isotopic ratios are lower than modern-day ocean water and most of the whole-rock ratios of the surrounding geologic materials. A conceivable source of Sr to the system …

Depositional History And Neotectonics In Great Salt Lake, Utah, From High-Resolution Seismic Stratigraphy, Steven M. Colman, Kerry R. Kelts, David A. Dinter
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
High-resolution seismic-reflection data from Great Salt Lake show that the basinal sediment sequence is cut by numerous faults with N–S and NE–SW orientations. This faulting shows evidence of varied timing and relative offsets, but includes at least three events totaling about 12 m following the Bonneville phase of the lake (since about 13.5 ka). Several faults displace the uppermost sediments and the lake floor. Bioherm structures are present above some faults, which suggests that the faults served as conduits for sublacustrine discharge of fresh water. A shallow, fault-controlled ridge between Carrington Island and Promontory Point, underlain by a well-cemented pavement, …
Cross-Scale Structure And Scale Breaks In Ecosystems And Other Complex Systems, Craig R. Allen, C. S. Holling
Cross-Scale Structure And Scale Breaks In Ecosystems And Other Complex Systems, Craig R. Allen, C. S. Holling
Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
The five articles in this special feature extend the discovery of regular patterns of deviation from scaling laws and from continuous distributions of attributes in ecosystems and other complex systems. These patterns suggest that these systems organize over discrete ranges of scale and that organization abruptly shifts with changes in scale. If this is so, scaling laws (for example, see West 1997, 1999; Zipf 1949) serve only as the baseline from which to measure those departures, and those departures indicate “scale breaks” (transitions) between scales of structure in complex systems. Patterns in the deviations from a scaling-law baseline may provide …

Land Use Change And Modification Of Near-Surface Thermal Records In The Northern Great Plains, Rezaul Mahmood, Ken Hubbard, Christy Carlson
High Plains Regional Climate Center: Personnel Publications
The North American Great Plains have experienced a rapid overturning of natural grasslands to agricultural land use over the last century. Moreover, in some areas more than 80% of the land use has changed from dry land to irrigated agriculture during the second half of the twentieth century. It is speculated that these changes have modified near-surface atmospheric condition and our modeling study seems to support this. To identify changes in land surface- atmospheric modifications we have applied a soil moistureenergy balance model at three locations in Nebraska: Mead, York, and McCook. The model was applied for three land uses …

Cross Section And Heavy Quark Composition Of Γ+Μ Events Produced In Pp̅ Collisions, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration
Kenneth Bloom Publications
We present a measurement of the cross section and the first measurement of the heavy flavor content of associated direct photon + muon events produced in hadronic collisions. These measurements come from a sample of 1.8 TeV pp̅ collisions recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) predicts that these events are primarily due to the Compton scattering process cg→cγ , with the final-state charm quark producing a muon. The cross section for events with a photon transverse momentum between 12 and 40 GeV/c is measured to be 46.8±6.3±7.5 pb, which is two standard deviations below the …

Diffractive dissociation of virtual photons, γ*p → Xp, has been studied in ep interactions with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The data cover photon virtualities 0.17 < Q2 < 0.70 GeV2 and 3 < Q2 < 80 GeV2 with 3 < MX < 38 GeV, where MX is the mass of the hadronic final state. Diffractive events were selected by two methods: the first required the detection of the scattered proton in the ZEUS leading proton spectrometer (LPS); the second was based on the distribution of MX. The integrated luminosities of the low- and high-Q2 samples used in the LPS-based analysis are ≃ 0.9 pb-1 and ≃ 3.3 pb-1, respectively. The sample used for the MX-based analysis corresponds to an integrated luminosity of ≃ 6.2 pb-1. The dependence of the diffractive cross section on W, the virtual photon-proton centre-of-mass energy, and on Q2 is studied. In the low-Q2 range, the energy dependence is compatible with Regge theory and is used to determine the intercept of the Pomeron trajectory. The W dependence of the diffractive cross section exhibits no significant change from the low-Q2 to the high-Q2 region. In the low-Q2 range, little Q2 dependence is found, a significantly different behaviour from the rapidly falling cross section measured for Q2 > 3 GeV2. The ratio of the diffractive to the virtual photon-proton total cross section is studied as a function of W and Q2. Comparisons are made with a model based on perturbative QCD.

The title compound, C26H30O4, is one of the first alkyl bis-peroxides to be structurally characterized. The molecule lies on a centre of inversion and therefore the terminal phenyl rings are parallel. Although there are three aromatic rings in the molecule, the C—O—O—C torsion angle of 163.10 (10)° is close to the value found in Me3COOCMe3.

The Effect Of Foamy Slag In Electric Arc Furnaces On Electric Energy Consumption, Sima Aminorroaya-Yamini, Hossein Edris
Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers
In electric arc furnace steelmaking units, the essential parameters that considered important are reducing price, increasing production and decreasing environmental pollution. Electric arc furnaces are the largest users of electric energy in industry. The most important techniques that can be used to reduce the electric energy consumption in electric arc furnaces are scrap preheating, stirring, use of burners and hot charge and foamy slag.
Between these methods, use of foamy slag is the most useful and economic factor. Foamy slag can reduce the amount of energy, electrods, refractory consumption, tap to tap time and increases productivity. In this research, method …
