Divergence-Free Tensor Densities In Two Dimensions, Tyler Hansen
Divergence-Free Tensor Densities In Two Dimensions, Tyler Hansen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
In physics, a common method for exploring the way a physical system changes over time is to look at the system’s energy. Roughly speaking, the energy in these systems are either motion-based (kinetic energy, a bullet in flight) or position-based (potential energy, a rock sitting at the top of a hill). The difference between the system’s total kinetic and potential energies is quantified by an expression called the Lagrangian. Using a special procedure, this Lagrangian is massaged to produce a group of equations called the Euler-Lagrange equations; if the initial configuration of the system is provided, the solution to these …
3d-Printed Microfluidic Devices For Electrochemiluminescence Detection Of Mirna, Oscar Clement
3d-Printed Microfluidic Devices For Electrochemiluminescence Detection Of Mirna, Oscar Clement
Honors Scholar Theses
This thesis outlines the research conducted over the past two years on the production and application of microfluidic devices (MFDs) in electrochemiluminescent-based bioanalytical assays. The work is categorized into two main projects: designing and manufacturing MFDs and developing electrochemiluminescent (ECL) assays for detecting Alzheimer's disease (AD) associated microRNAs (miRNAs) using CRISPR technology. The process of learning to design MFDs involved acquiring proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software, stereolithography (SLA) 3D printing, and iterative design techniques. The development of the ECL-based assay for AD miRNA was a multidisciplinary endeavor, combining elements of inorganic and biological chemistry. Although the research on the …
Optimization Of Xrf Experimental Protocol For Bruker Picofox, Tyler Ashcraft
Optimization Of Xrf Experimental Protocol For Bruker Picofox, Tyler Ashcraft
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The research performed was to improve the precision and accuracy of sample measurements made with the Bruker Picofox X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. The initial method of sample preparation using a 10 μL drop spotted onto an acrylic plate and then drying in an oven at 80˚C produced inconsistent results even when processing replicates or the same sample multiples times. Multiple experiments were conducted to determine the effects of different sample preparation conditions on the resulting accuracy. The conditions tested were drop size, plate composition, and drying temperature. For each experiment an internal standard (gallium) was used at concentrations similar to that …

Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots have emerged as powerful tools in modern academic endeavors, presenting both opportunities and challenges in the learning landscape. They can provide content information and analysis across most academic disciplines, but significant differences exist in terms of response accuracy for conclusions and explanations, as well as word counts. This study explores four distinct AI chatbots, GPT-3.5, GPT-4, Bard, and LLaMA 2, for accuracy of conclusions and quality of explanations in the context of university-level economics. Leveraging Bloom’s taxonomy of cognitive learning complexity as a guiding framework, the study confronts the four AI chatbots with a standard test …
Bernstein Polynomials Method For Solving Multi-Order Fractional Neutral Pantograph Equations With Error And Stability Analysis, M. H. T. Alshbool
Bernstein Polynomials Method For Solving Multi-Order Fractional Neutral Pantograph Equations With Error And Stability Analysis, M. H. T. Alshbool
All Works
In this investigation, we present a new method for addressing fractional neutral pantograph problems, utilizing the Bernstein polynomials method. We obtain solutions for the fractional pantograph equations by employing operational matrices of differentiation, derived from fractional derivatives in the Caputo sense applied to Bernstein polynomials. Error analysis, along with Chebyshev algorithms and interpolation nodes, is employed for solution characterization. Both theoretical and practical stability analyses of the method are provided. Demonstrative examples indicate that our proposed techniques occasionally yield exact solutions. We compare the algorithms using several established analytical methods. Our results reveal that our algorithm, based on Bernstein series …
The Use Of Laja In Construction In Ancient Mesoamerica: A View From The Southern Gulf Lowlands Of Veracruz, Mexico, Lauren Smith
The Use Of Laja In Construction In Ancient Mesoamerica: A View From The Southern Gulf Lowlands Of Veracruz, Mexico, Lauren Smith
Honors College Theses
The archaeology of the southern Gulf lowlands of Veracruz, Mexico is notable for its research pertaining to the Olmec culture (Jaime-Riveron 2016; Loughlin 2012; Pool 2006). The region was home to the Colossal Olmec Heads: large, easily identifiable sculptures crafted from the volcanic rock of the Tuxtlas Volcanic Field. The use of volcanic resources in such grand presentations may instill a bias in the research of some archaeologists, but it is important to consider how these and other volcanic resources might have been used in everyday life (e.g., Jaime-Riveron 2016: 86). The consolidated volcanic ash in this region is referred …
Predictability Of The Overland Reintensification Of North Atlantic Tropical Cyclone Erin (2007), Ariel Tickner-Ernst
Predictability Of The Overland Reintensification Of North Atlantic Tropical Cyclone Erin (2007), Ariel Tickner-Ernst
Theses and Dissertations
Tropical cyclones (TC) typically decrease in intensity upon interacting with land because of increased surface roughness and decreased surface evaporation. However, several studies have documented cases in which TCs maintain their intensity or even intensify over land within non- or weakly baroclinic environments. Yet, our understanding of the precise physical processes that support maintenance or intensification over land in non- or weakly baroclinic environments remains limited, and the predictive skill for these outcomes has yet to be quantified.
We begin this process by quantifying the predictive skill and forecast uncertainty of the overland intensification of North Atlantic Tropical Storm Erin …
Which Vole Is Which: Dna-Based Species Identification For Wisconsin’S Three Microtus Species, Madeline Noel Opie
Which Vole Is Which: Dna-Based Species Identification For Wisconsin’S Three Microtus Species, Madeline Noel Opie
Theses and Dissertations
Accurate species identification is necessary to implement conservation strategies in the wild. When traditional morphology-based species identification is challenging due to phenotypic plasticity, overlapping characteristics, or the species are otherwise cryptic, DNA-based species identification may be more suitable. Of the three species of Microtus in Wisconsin, two are listed as threatened at the state level. Both M. ochrogaster and M. pinetorum have stable population levels at the national level but are along the northern edge of their ranges in Wisconsin. Small and vulnerable populations of M. ochrogaster and M. pinetorum are limited to isolated patches in the southwestern portion of …
Classification And Explanation Of Iron Deficiency Anemia From Complete Blood Count Data Using Machine Learning, Siddartha Pullakhandam
Classification And Explanation Of Iron Deficiency Anemia From Complete Blood Count Data Using Machine Learning, Siddartha Pullakhandam
Theses and Dissertations
Anemia is a global health problem, and over 2 billion people are affected. Although, the major cause of anemia is iron deficiency (IDA), global estimates suggest that only about half of anemia could be attributed to ID. The typical test of anemia involves measurement of hemoglobin using Complete Blood Count (CBC) test, which also gives additional information on blood cell numbers and morphology. The diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia (IDA, both anemic and ID co-exist in a subject) requires additional expensive serum ferritin test. However, blood cell count, and morphology can also be utilized for diagnosis of IDA. The goal …
Mapping Arbitrary Spiking Neural Networks To The Ravens Neuroprocessor, Jongheon Park
Mapping Arbitrary Spiking Neural Networks To The Ravens Neuroprocessor, Jongheon Park
Masters Theses
In neuromorphic computing, a hardware implementation of a spiking neural network is used to provide improved speed and power efficiency over simulations of the networks on a traditional Von Neumann architecture. These hardware implementations employ bio-inspired architecture usually consisting of artificial neurons and synapses implemented in either analog, digital, or mixed-signal circuits. Since these hardware spiking neural networks are designed to support arbitrary networks under the constraints imposed by the available hardware resource, they have to be programmed by off-chip software with awareness of those constraints. The TENNLab research group at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville has recently developed the …

Winter Roost Selection Of Eastern Red Bats And Impacts Of Non-Growing Season Prescribed Fire On Foraging Activity Of Forest Roosting Bats In Tennessee, Ashley D. Epstein
Masters Theses
With an increase in wind energy development and continued deforestation and habitat degradation, eastern red bats (Lasiurus borealis; LABO) and other migratory foliage roosting bats (hoary bat [Lasiurus cinereus; LACI], silver-haired bat [Lasionycteris noctivagans; LANO]) are at risk of severe population declines, potentially leading to the need for protection under the Endangered Species Act. While studies have been done examining the ecology of these species, there is still a lack of research on winter roosting and foraging behaviors. This research aims to fill some of those knowledge gaps by 1) Examining roost use (i.e., trees vs. litter) …

The MRI-derived brain network serves as a pivotal instrument in elucidating both the structural and functional aspects of the brain, encompassing the ramifications of diseases and developmental processes. However, prevailing methodologies, often focusing on synchronous BOLD signals from functional MRI (fMRI), may not capture directional influences among brain regions and rarely tackle temporal functional dynamics. In this study, we first construct the brain-effective network via the dynamic causal model. Subsequently, we introduce an interpretable graph learning framework termed Spatio-Temporal Embedding ODE (STE-ODE). This framework incorporates specifically designed directed node embedding layers, aiming at capturing the dynamic interplay between structural and …

Synthesis Of Thermoresponsive Poly(N-Isopropyl Acrylamide) Based Core-Shell And Hollow Shell Nanogel With Tunable Core And Shell Thickness, Mohamad Hijazi, Molla R. Islam
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Nanogels have emerged as a notably safer and more effective means for drug delivery, primarily due to their adjustable drug-loading capabilities. Hollow-core nanoparticles offer some unique properties that are desirable for drug delivery applications. Initially, silica core nanoparticles were synthesized using the Stöber process at different temperatures where Tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) undergoes hydrolysis in the presence of ethanol and then a condensation reaction to form silica nanoparticles. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Optical Microscopy (OM) analysis revealed that the size of silica core particles varied with the synthesis temperature (300 nm at 30°C to 150 at 60°C). The core silica particles …
Computational Linguistics And Multilingualism: A Comparative Analysis With Spanish And English Data, Evelyn Lawrie
Computational Linguistics And Multilingualism: A Comparative Analysis With Spanish And English Data, Evelyn Lawrie
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Computational linguistics is an increasingly ubiquitous field, serving as the basis for artificial intelligence and machine translation. It aims to analyze the syntax and semantics of individual words and phrases. While there have been in-depth advancements in computational linguistics strategies for the English language, others have not been developed as thoroughly. This lack of emphasis on multilingualism has contributed to the disappearance of Hispanic perspectives in the digital world. Especially those of indigenous heritage, as the decline of many indigenous languages has been exacerbated by the lack of digital translation services. Sentiment analysis is a branch of computational linguistics that …

Dancetag: Using Sensors To Improve Feedback Given To Dance Students, Yanelly Mego
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
The structure of dance classrooms has remained unchanged for several years. Very little, if any, technology has been incorporated to improve the quality of teaching. This has motivated our research project, whose goal is to capture dance movements with wearable sensors, to develop DANCETAG (Data Analytics and Notation with Captured Event Tagging). This is a platform that allows the gathering of data captured by Sony’s Mocopi sensors and annotating them with the dancer's movements. The Mocopi sensors make up a motion capture system. It is comprised of six small, round sensors that can be attached to velcro straps and clips. …

A generalized Lehmer conjecture predicts that, for every positive integer n, the trace of the Hecke operator Tn in level one does not vanish, unless the space of cusp forms acted upon is trivial. So far, this has only been established for n = 2. In this paper, we use p-adic methods to prove the statement for n = 3.

Exploring unknown environments using multiple robots poses a complex challenge, particularly in situations where communication between robots is either impossible or limited. Existing exploration techniques exhibit research gaps due to unrealistic communication assumptions or the computational complexities associated with exploration strategies in unfamiliar domains. In our investigation of multi-robot exploration in unknown areas, we employed various exploration and coordination techniques, evaluating their performance in terms of robustness and efficiency across different levels of environmental complexity.
Our research is centered on optimizing the exploration process through strategic agent distribution. We initially address the challenge of city roadway coverage, aiming to minimize …
The Effect Of Seed Mix Density And Composition On Wetland Plant Community Assembly In The Great Salt Lake Watershed, Elana Feldman
The Effect Of Seed Mix Density And Composition On Wetland Plant Community Assembly In The Great Salt Lake Watershed, Elana Feldman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Wetlands provide important ecosystem services to society but are in danger across the globe partly due to the spread of invasive species (species that harm humans, the environment, or the economy). One species, Phragmites australis, is a widespread invader across the country, including in the wetlands of the Great Salt Lake and Utah Lake. Phragmites australis spreads widely and quickly outcompetes native species. In places where P. australis has already been removed, seeding wetlands helps block P. australis from returning. Native plants’ ability to prevent invasive species from entering the community is affected by many factors, but two that …
Impacts Of Lake Elevation Decline On Tui Chub, A Critical Forage Species For Lahontan Cutthroat Trout In Pyramid Lake, Nevada, Usa, Sarah Barnes
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Lake level decline affects lakes worldwide, changing the availability and character of nearshore habitat used by fish to spawn, and increasing total dissolved solids (TDS), similar to salinity, a factor that negatively impacts fish health. Lake level decline can affect different lakes in different ways, but typically when lake level declines significantly, there is less nearshore habitat overall, and what nearshore habitat remains has less diverse habitat for fish. We investigated whether both impacts of lake level decline may be causing declines of Tui Chub Siphateles bicolor, a large minnow native to Pyramid Lake that spawns in nearshore habitat. …
Channel Response To Flow Augmentation: Diamond Fork River, Ut, Diane E. Wagner
Channel Response To Flow Augmentation: Diamond Fork River, Ut, Diane E. Wagner
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
A river’s physical features and channel dimensions are determined by the water and sediment supplied to it. The Diamond Fork River, located in central Utah—received large trans-basin diversion flows from 1915-2003, providing an exceptional opportunity to explore the response of a river to a large increase in flow.
Our project goals were to describe 1) channel response to this large and long artificial flow augmentation and 2) how the channel recovered after the removal of the diversion flows. The objective of this thesis is to document the channel condition throughout the 20th century to present day as a basis …
Spatial Ecology Of Mule Deer Migrations From Grand Teton National Park And The Teton Range, Justin K. Schwabedissen
Spatial Ecology Of Mule Deer Migrations From Grand Teton National Park And The Teton Range, Justin K. Schwabedissen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem hosts several of the longest, fully intact ungulate migrations remaining in the continental United States. However, expanding development and an increasing human footprint continue to truncate migratory routes. While the endpoints are often a seasonal range on protected lands, these migration corridors frequently cross other jurisdictional boundaries, including large tracts of private or multiple-use lands, with varying levels of protection. Thus, it is critical resource managers understand the dynamics of migratory movements to define population-level corridors and prioritize appropriate conservation strategies. Mule deer in Wyoming have been documented traveling long distances between summer and winter ranges; …
A Framework That Explores The Cognitive Load Of Cs1 Assignments Using Pausing Behavior, Joshua O. Urry
A Framework That Explores The Cognitive Load Of Cs1 Assignments Using Pausing Behavior, Joshua O. Urry
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Pausing behavior in introductory Computer Science (CS1) courses has been related to a student’s performance in the course and could be linked to a student’s cognitive load, or assignment difficulty. Having an objective measure of the cognitive load would be beneficial to course instructors as it would help them design assignments that are not too difficult. Two studies are presented in this work. The first study uses Cognitive Load Theory and Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development as a theoretical framework to analyze pause times between keystrokes to better understand what types of assignments need more educational support than others. The …

Carnivores are ecologically important to global ecosystems because they interact with their prey species and other carnivores in a variety of ways. Many carnivores have suffered habitat loss and persecution by humans, which has led some populations to become imperiled or locally extirpated. Despite these challenges, cougars (Puma concolor) continue to exist across North, Central, and South America. They exhibit behavioral adaptation across their wide range, thriving in terrain that ranges from temperate forests, to steppe scrub, to rainforest, to rugged deserts. Across these diverse ecosystems, cougars can successfully establish territories, hunt prey, and raise young to persist …
Informing Control Efforts For A Prolific Invasive Species: Characterizing Common Carp Spatio-Temporal Distribution And Evaluating The Impacts Of Gear Selectivity In Utah Lake, Rae Fadlovich
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Management programs that aim to reduce the consequences of invasive species are often challenged by populations that can rapidly recover from removal efforts. Selectivity, the relative impact of harvest on different size classes, can contribute to population recovery when younger fish are not effectively targeted. In Utah Lake, the location of one of the world’s largest freshwater fish control programs, managers have been attempting to control the common carp (Cyprinus carpio, hereafter “carp”) population since 2009 but efforts have been hindered by the use of selective fishing gears. I conducted a lake-wide field study to gain insights into …
On The Existence Of Periodic Traveling-Wave Solutions To Certain Systems Of Nonlinear, Dispersive Wave Equations, Jacob Daniels
On The Existence Of Periodic Traveling-Wave Solutions To Certain Systems Of Nonlinear, Dispersive Wave Equations, Jacob Daniels
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
A variety of physical phenomena can be modeled by systems of nonlinear, dispersive wave equations. Such examples include the propagation of a wave through a canal, deep ocean waves with small amplitude and long wavelength, and even the propagation of long-crested waves on the surface of lakes. An important task in the study of water wave equations is to determine whether a solution exists. This thesis aims to determine whether there exists solutions that both travel at a constant speed and are periodic for several systems of water wave equations. The work done in this thesis contributes to the subfields …

A Comprehensive Uncertainty Quantification Methodology For Metrology Calibration And Method Comparison Problems Via Numeric Solutions To Maximum Likelihood Estimation And Parametric Bootstrapping, Aloka B. S. N. Dayarathne
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
In metrology, the science of measurements, straight line calibration models are frequently employed. These models help understand the instrumental response to an analyte, whose chemical constituents are unknown, and predict the analyte’s concentration in a sample. Techniques such as ordinary least squares and generalized least squares are commonly used to fit these calibration curves. However, these methods may yield biased estimates of slope and intercept when the calibrant, substance used to calibrate an analytical procedure with known chemical constituents (x-values), carries uncertainty. To address this, Ripley and Thompson (1987) proposed functional relationship estimation by maximum likelihood (FREML), which considers uncertainties …

Assessing Extant Methods For Generating G-Optimal Designs And A Novel Methodology To Compute The G-Score Of A Candidate Design, Hyrum John Hansen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Experimental designs are used by scientists to allocate treatments such that statistical inference is appropriate. Most traditional experimental designs have mathematical properties that make them desirable under certain conditions. Optimal experimental designs are those where the researcher can exercise total control over the treatment levels to maximize a chosen mathematical property. As is common in literature, the experimental design is represented as a matrix where each column represents a variable, and each row represents a trial. We define a function that takes as input the design matrix and outputs its score. We then algorithmically adjust each entry until a design …
Humanity Amid Innovation: Exploring Our Relationship To Technology, Sarah Durkee
Humanity Amid Innovation: Exploring Our Relationship To Technology, Sarah Durkee
Senior Theses and Projects
This thesis examines the impacts of technology on fundamental aspects of human nature and experience. Drawing on the works from Kant, Turing, Arendt, Benjamin, and Freud, it explores how rapid technological change is redefining human reason, intelligence, and creativity in the digital age. The first chapter analyzes whether modern online communication platforms realize or undermine Kant's vision of an enlightened public sphere fostering free discourse and critique. It argues that prioritizing engagement over substantive debate, these digital realms corrode the depth of interaction essential for cultivating human reason. The second chapter explores the pursuit of artificial intelligence as a reproduction …

This phenomenon has revolutionized various facets of daily life, from smart home devices to autonomous vehicles, reshaping how individuals interact with the world around them. However, as governments worldwide increasingly harness these innovations to monitor and collect personal data, profound privacy concerns have arisen among the general populace. Despite the ubiquity of AI and IoT in modern society, formal …
Process Modeling The Neuroprotective Effects Of A Plant-Based Diet On Parkinson's Disease, Julia Mitchell
Process Modeling The Neuroprotective Effects Of A Plant-Based Diet On Parkinson's Disease, Julia Mitchell
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor symptoms such as tremors, bradykinesia, rigidity, and postural instability. Recent research suggests an avenue for potential neuroprotection through dietary intervention, specifically the adoption of a plant-based diet. A plant-based diet predominantly comprises foods derived from plants, emphasizing fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, and nuts while minimizing or excluding animal products. This thesis aims to explore the biochemical pathways implicated in PD progression and the potential impact of dietary choices on these pathways. The investigation focuses on several key pathways: alpha-synuclein aggregation, the blood-brain barrier crossing of levodopa, oxidative stress, ferroptosis, …
