Limnología De Las Lagunas Glaciales En El Páramo Del Chirripó, Costa Rica. (Limnology Of Glacial Lakes In The Chirripó Páramo Of Costa Rica.), Sally P Horn, Kenneth H. Orvis, Kurt A. Haberyan

Geography Publications and Other Works

More than 30 lakes of glacial origin exist within the Chirripó páramo in the Cordillera de Talamanca of Costa Rica. This chapter describes the geomorphic setting and physical and chemical limnology of 19 lakes located between 3450-3570 m elevation in the upper basins of five glaciated valleys. All lakes are clear, dilute, and apparently polymictic. Water chemistry data from 1998, 2000, and 2001 are similar from lake to lake and year to year, and are consistent with sparse prior measurements between 1966 and 1991. However, the lake water temperatures we have measured are much higher than those reported by earlier …

Search For T Violation In Charm Meson Decays, Abaz Kryemadhi Jan 2005

Search For T Violation In Charm Meson Decays, Abaz Kryemadhi

Educator Scholarship & Departmental Newsletters

Using data from the FOCUS (E831) experiment, we have searched for T violation in charm meson decays using the four-body decay channels D0→K−K+π−π+, D+→KS0K+π−π+, and Ds+→KS0K+π−π+. The T violation asymmetry is obtained using triple-product correlations and assuming the validity of the CPT theorem. We find the asymmetry values to be ATviol(D0)=0.010±0.057(stat.)±0.037(syst.), ATviol(D+)=0.023±0.062(stat.)±0.022(syst.), and ATviol(Ds+)=−0.036±0.067(stat.)±0.023(syst.). Each measurement is consistent with no T violation. New measurements of the CP asymmetries for some of these decay modes are also presented.

Study Of Λc+ Cabibbo Favored Decays Containing A Λ Baryon In The Final State, Abaz Kryemadhi

Educator Scholarship & Departmental Newsletters

Using data from the FOCUS experiment (FNAL–E831), we study the decay of Λc+ baryons into final states containing a Λ hyperon. The branching fractions of Λc+ into Λπ+, Λπ+π+π− and ΛK¯0K+ relative to that into pK−π+ are measured to be 0.217±0.013±0.020, 0.508±0.024±0.024 and 0.142±0.018±0.022, respectively. We also report new measurements of Γ(Λc+→Σ0π+)Γ(Λc+→Λπ+)=1.09±0.11±0.19, Γ(Λc+→Σ0π+π+π−)Γ(Λc+→Λπ+π+π−)=0.26±0.06±0.09 and Γ(Λc+→Ξ(1690)0(ΛK¯0)K+)Γ(Λc+→ΛK¯0K+)=0.32±0.10±0.04. Further, an analysis of the subresonant structure for the Λc+→Λπ+π+π− decay mode is presented.

Access And Allocation Arrangements For The Commercial 'Wetline' Fisheries. Proposals For Discussion., Commercial Access Panel Jan 2005

Access And Allocation Arrangements For The Commercial 'Wetline' Fisheries. Proposals For Discussion., Commercial Access Panel

Fisheries management papers

The Minister for Fisheries established this review of open access (wetline) commercial fishery arrangements to provide a more effective management framework for wetline fishing and to complement the recreational initiatives. This must involve the removal of excess fishing capacity, including latent effort, from the fishery and the establishment of a dedicated commercial fishery with clear entry criteria and an appropriate limit on catch in each bioregion. However it must be made clear that the ‘wetline review’ is not a sectoral resource sharing exercise. Following the implementation of new management arrangements for the ‘wetline’ fisheries, the appropriateness of the existing levels …

Proposed Management Arrangements For The Gascoyne Commercial 'Wetland' Fishery. A Discussion Paper., West Coast And Gascoye Wetline Review Management Planning Panel.

Fisheries management papers

The ‘Wetline Review’ was established to implement an effective management framework for the commercial sector to complement the recreational initiatives. It must be stressed at the outset that this review is focussed on the take of scalefish by the commercial sector. The existing levels of use between the various user groups in the Gascoyne will be examined under the new integrated fisheries initiative following the implementation of new management arrangements for scalefish taken by the commercial sector.

Proper Actions Of Automorphism Groups Of Free Products Of Finite Groups, Craig A. Jensen, Yuqing Chen, Henry H. Glover

Mathematics Faculty Publications

If G is a free product of finite groups, let ΣAut1(G) denote all (necessarily symmetric) automorphisms of G that do not permute factors in the free product. We show that a McCullough–Miller and Gutiérrez–Krstić derived (also see Bogley–Krstić) space of pointed trees is an EΣAut1(G)-space for these groups.

Physics Faculty Publications

Nanometer-sized ferrite magnetic materials are the subject of intense research interest due to their potential applications in high-density magnetic information storage. One of the most explored ferrite materials is the cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4).. We have synthesized cobalt ferrite nanowires using cobalt ferrite nanoparticles in a porous anodic alumina template (AAT). The process of embedding ferrimagnetic particles into the pores was assisted by the magnetic field of a permanent magnet placed in vacuum directly under the substrate. Particles synthesized in the template were subsequently annealed at 600 °C for 2 h in Ar gas forming arrays of cobalt ferrite nanowires inside …

Magneto-Optical Spectra Of Closely Spaced Magnetite Nanoparticles, Damon Allen Smith, Yu A. Barnakov, B L. Scott, S A. White, Kevin L. Stokes Jan 2005

Magneto-Optical Spectra Of Closely Spaced Magnetite Nanoparticles, Damon Allen Smith, Yu A. Barnakov, B L. Scott, S A. White, Kevin L. Stokes

Physics Faculty Publications

The Faraday rotation spectrum of composites containing magnetite nanoparticles is found to be dependent on the interparticle spacing of the constituent nanoparticles. The composite materials are prepared by combining chemically synthesized Fe

3O4 smagnetited nanoparticles s8-nm diameterd and polysmethylmethacrylated . Composites are made containing a range of nanoparticle concentrations. The peak of the main spectral feature depends on nanoparticle concentration; this peak is observed to shift from approximately 470 nm for sdilute compositesd to 540 nm concentrated . We present a theory based on the discrete-dipole approximation which accounts for

optical coupling between magnetite particles. Qualitative correlations between theoretical calculations …

Large Plasma-Edge Broadened Magneto-Optic-Polar-Kerr-Effect-Based Broadband Incoherent Detection Of Terahertz Spectral Frequencies, A. De, A. Puri Jan 2005

Large Plasma-Edge Broadened Magneto-Optic-Polar-Kerr-Effect-Based Broadband Incoherent Detection Of Terahertz Spectral Frequencies, A. De, A. Puri

Physics Faculty Publications

A magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE)-based spectroscopic technique is proposed in the terahertz regime. This method relies on very large reflection edge splitting effects, which occur when the cyclotron frequency (CF) is of the same order of magnitude or greater than the plasma frequency. In the event of a very large reflection edge split, the Kerr rotation (KR) no longer occurs at the plasma edge, but instead occurs at Re(ε+ε) ≈ 1, within the macroscopic framework of the Drude model. This implies that one can control the spectral occurrence of the MOKE resonance, simply by tuning …

A Student-Centered Project For Earth System History, Rebecca Teed Jan 2005

A Student-Centered Project For Earth System History, Rebecca Teed

Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications

This project is intended to replace some of the lectures that would ordinarily be necessary in a survey of Earth history over geologic time. The students will be taking the lecturer's place in front of the class, presenting some of the material to their colleagues. Students will work in groups on a single era or period. Each student role-plays an expert (such as an oceanographer) and works with teammates playing other sorts of experts (a biologist, a geologist, an atmospheric scientist). Their presentation will require them to do research. They will be constructing resource lists to keep track of how …

Search For LambdaB0-->Ppi And LambdaB0-->PK Decays In P [Overline P] Collisions At Sqrt(S)=1.96 Tev, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report on a search for Λ b0-->pπ- and Λ b0-->pK- (and charge conjugate) decays in pp̅ collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV using 193 pb-1 of data collected by the CDF II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Data were collected using a track trigger that has been optimized to select tracks belonging to a secondary vertex that is typical of two-body charmless decays of b-flavored hadrons, including Λ b0 baryons. As no Λ b0 signal was observed, we set the upper limits on the branching fraction …

Assessing The Accuracy Of Respondents Reports Of The Location Of Their Home Relative To A National Forest Boundary And Forest Cover, John D. Baldridge, James T. Sylveste, William T. Borrie Jan 2005

Assessing The Accuracy Of Respondents Reports Of The Location Of Their Home Relative To A National Forest Boundary And Forest Cover, John D. Baldridge, James T. Sylveste, William T. Borrie

Society and Conservation Faculty Publications

This paper assesses the accuracy of responses to a question that asks the location of respondents’ homes relative to a National Forest boundary. The analysis also assesses the accuracy of respondent reports on forest cover in the area surrounding their home. We find non-ignorable error in the responses to both questions. The remainder of this paper is divided into three sections. First, the methods used for this study are described as are limitations of the study. Second, we illustrate the study’s results. Finally, we discuss our results and conclusions.

Structure And Isopach Maps Of The Mississippian "Big Lime" (Newman Limestone/Slade Formation), Eastern Kentucky, David C. Harris, Thomas N. Sparks

Map and Chart--KGS

The maps included in this publication were made using stratigraphic data collected by us from almost 8,000 wells as part of a regional stratigraphic study of the Mississippian Slade Formation in eastern Kentucky. The data extend from the Mississippian outcrop belt along the northwestern edge of the map area to the state borders on the northeast. The southeastern border of the map area is marked by the Pine Mountain Fault.

Formation tops data for these wells were collected from geophysical (electric) logs and drillers' logs, and are available in electronic format from the Kentucky Geological Survey (Harris and Sparks, 1997). …
