Modern Interpretation Of Euclid's Theory Of Ratio And Proportion, Mark Robert Stecher

Euclid’s Elements is the foundation for geometry. Book V of Euclid’s Elements, which is independent from the earlier books, focuses on multiples, ratios, and proportions. This paper presents a model of the conceptual content of Book V, but using carefully selected modern notation to represent Euclid’s ideas without changing them drastically. All of the propositions and proofs from Euclid have been restated using just enough modern language to make clear for a modern reader. We also present a modern theory that bears analogy, proposition by proposition, to Euclid’s theory, but uses rigorous modern methods of proof.

This thesis uses the techniques of atomic force microscope (AFM) and conductive AFM (C-AFM) to study the conduction properties of n-type GaN films. A total of 16 samples were examined and grouped according to their surface morphologies and conduction behaviors. The most common type of surface morpliology was that of Ga-rich samples having undulating "hillocks" with interspersed holes. Although most of the samples had this common morphology, their local conduction behaviors were not all similar. Local I-V spectra of the tip-sample Schottky contact could be grouped according to three major types: low leakage, high leakage, and "p-type". The highest quality …

The cationic ruthenium hydride complex [(PCy₃)₂(CO)(CH₃CN)₂RuH]⁺BF₄^- was found to be a highly effective catalyst for the C−H bond activation reaction of arylamines and terminal alkynes. The regioselective catalytic synthesis of substituted quinoline and quinoxaline derivatives was achieved from the ortho-C−H bond activation reaction of arylamines and terminal alkynes by using the catalyst Ru₃(CO)₁₂/HBF₄·OEt₂. Methyl Methacrylate Oligomerically-Modified Clay And Its Poly (Methyl Methacrylate) Nanocomposites, Xiaoxia Zheng, David D. Jiang, Charles A. Wilkie

A methyl methacrylate oligomerically-modified clay was used to prepare poly(methyl methacrylate) clay nanocomposites by melt blending and the effect of the clay loading level on the modified clay and corresponding nanocomposite was studied. These nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and cone calorimetry. The results show a mixed intercalated/delaminated morphology with good nanodispersion. The compatibility between the methylacrylate-subsituted clay and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) are greatly improved compared to other oligomerically-modified clays.

As part of a model-evaluation exercise to forecast Loop Current and Loop Current eddy frontal positions in the Gulf of Mexico, the Princeton Regional Ocean Forecast System (PROFS) is tested to forecast 14 4-week periods Aug/25/99- Sep/20/00, during which a powerful eddy, Eddy Juggernaut (Eddy-J) separated from the Loop Current and propagated southwestward. To initialize each forecast, PROFS assimilates satellite sea surface height (SSH) anomaly and temperature (SST) by projecting them into subsurface density using a surface/subsurface correlation that is a function of the satellite SSH anomaly. The first two authors have developed a technique which uses the complex geometry of the space of oriented affine lines in ℝ3 to describe the reflection of rays off a surface. This can be viewed as a parametric approach to geometric optics which has many possible applications. Recently, Jaffe and Scardicchio have developed a geometric optics approximation to the Casimir effect and the main purpose of this paper is to show that the quantities involved can be easily computed by this complex formalism. A Comparison Between Monte Carlo Simulations Of Runaway Breakdown And Terrestrial Gamma-Ray Flash Observations, Joseph R. Dwyer, David M. Smith

Monte Carlo simulations of the runaway breakdown of air are used to calculate the spectra of terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs), which are then compared with RHESSI and CGRO/BATSE observations. It is found that the recent RHESSI spectrum is not consistent with a source altitude above 24 km but can be well fit by a source in the range of 15-21 km, depending upon the electric field geometry of the source. Because 15 km is not unusual for the tops of thunderstorms, especially at low latitudes, and is lower than typical minimum sprite altitudes, the RHESSI data imply that thunderstorms and …

The Initiation Of Lightning By Runaway Air Breakdown, Joseph R. Dwyer

A mechanism for lightning initiation by the sustained runaway breakdown of air is presented. Unlike earlior models that rely upon large cosmic-ray air showers, this mechanism uses the runaway electrons produced by the steady background of atmospheric cosmic-rays to amplify non-uniformities in the electric field. The ionization of air from the runaway electrons creates a region of discharge that propagates in the opposite direction of the electrons, enhancing the electric field in front of it to the point where a conventional breakdown can occur. As the discharged region grows, positron feedback can become important, dramatically increasing the flux of runaway …

X-ray observations were made during fourteen 1.5 to 2.0 m high-voltage discharges in air produced by a 1.5 MV Marx circuit. All 14 discharges generated x-rays in the ∼30 to 150 keV range. The x-rays, which arrived in discrete bursts, less than 0.5 microseconds in duration, occurred from both positive and negative polarity rod-to-plane discharges as well as from small, 5-10 cm series spark gaps within the Marx generator. The x-ray bursts usually occurred when either the voltages across the gaps were the largest or were in the process of collapsing. The bursts are remarkably similar to the x-ray bursts …
