Charge carriermobility and recombination in a bulk heterojunctionsolar cell based on the mixture of poly[2-methoxy-5-(3,7-dimethyloctyloxy)-phenylene vinylene] (MDMO-PPV) and 1-(3-methoxycarbonyl)propyl-1-phenyl-(6,6)-C₆₁ (PCBM) has been studied using the novel technique of photoinduced charge carrier extraction in a linearly increasing voltage (Photo-CELIV). In this technique, charge carriers are photogenerated by a short laser flash, and extracted under a reverse bias voltage ramp after an adjustable delay time (t_del). Highly smooth and c-axis oriented superconducting MgB₂ thin films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) with off-axis geometry. The films were deposited on Al₂O₃–C substrates perpendicularly aligned to a stoichiometric MgB₂ target in a 120 mTorr high purity Ar background gas. An in situ annealing was carried out at 650 °C for 1 min in a 760 Torr Ar atmosphere. Despite the short annealing time, an x-ray θ–2θ scan shows fairly good crystallization, according to the clear c-axis oriented peaks for the films. Cylindrical single grains of GdBa 2Cu3Oy sGd-123d with a diameter of 25 mm were successfully fabricated by melt-texture growth sMTGd process in air to study the influence of different starting powders on flux pinning. Measurements of the magnetic critical current density sJcd showed that it was possible to fabricate large Gd-123 single grain with a high Jc at high temperatures and fields by means of properly controlling the starting powders of Gd 2O3, BaCO3 , and CuO before the process.

We report on the discovery of 141 further variable stars found in the field of the open cluster NGC 6819. The stars were identified from time-series photometric data obtained on the Isaac Newton Telescope, La Palma, during two observing runs covering the 19 nights between 1999 June 22–30 and 1999 July 22–31. The variables found include 53 eclipsing binaries, of which eight stars appear to be RS CVns, in addition to 70 stars showing spot activity, 13 showing long-period variability and five variables of other types.

Using nonparaxial vector diffraction theory derived using the Hertz vector formalism, integral expressions for the electric and magnetic field components of light within and beyond an apertured plane are obtained for an incident plane wave. For linearly polarized light incident on a circular aperture, the integrals for the field components and for the Poynting vector are numerically evaluated. By further two-dimensional integration of a Poynting vector component, the total transmission of a circular aperture is determined as a function of the aperture radius to wavelength ratio. Three novel vic-dioxime compounds and their transition metal complexes were synthesized for the first time. These ligands are anti-glyoximehydrazine (GH_2), anti-2-pyridinealdehydeglyoxime hydrazone (PyGH_2) and anti-2-furancarboxaldehydeglyoxime hydrazone (FGH_2). The synthesized anti-glyoximehydrazine was reacted with 2-pyridinealdehyde or 2-furancarboxaldehyde to obtain the PyGH_2 and FGH_2 ligands. Mononuclear complexes of these ligands with a metal-ligand ratio of 1:2 were prepared with Ni(II), Co(II) and Cu(II) ions. The structures of the ligands and complexes were determined by ^1H n.m.r, i.r spectroscopy and elemental analytical techniques.

We present a comparative study in terms of structural properties deduced from X - ray diffraction diagrams between YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) thin films fabricated on SrTiO3 (STO) single crystal substrates and bicrystallines substrates with a symmetrical tilt angle of 24 degrees. Periodic Lattice Distortions (PLD) have been observed around different Bragg peaks in YBCO thin films deposited on STO bicrystals while only diffraction peaks have been measured in the diagrams corresponding to the YBCO thin films deposited on STO single crystal substrates. Only in regions situated a 3.5 mm at both sides of the grain boundary the PDL have been investigated. …

The onset of electro magneto-optic effects, observed at the Ba L2,3 edges synchrotron X-ray absorption by a YBa2Cu3O7 single crystal, 10 K above the transition temperature to superconductivity, Tc ~ 92 K is used to identify the role played by the Ba donor layer in the transition to superconductivity in the CuO2 layers. Negative permeability leads to Faraday rotation of the transmitted beam below T = 112 to 56 K for the 22 μm thick single crystal (c-axis orientation of 8π/18 relative to εX-rays) and sharp changes in the density of empty final states lead to zero transmitted radiation in …

In recent ultra-high-vacuum transmission-electron-microscopy experiments evidence is found for the formation of suspended gold single-wall nanotubes (SWNTs) composed of five helical strands. Similar to carbon nanotubes, the (n,m) notation defines the structure of the gold SWNTs. Experimentally, only the (5,3) tube has been observed to form among several other possible alternatives. Using first-principles calculations we demonstrate that gold atoms can form both freestanding and tip-suspended, chiral, single-wall nanotubes. Although freestanding, infinite (5,5) tube is found to be energetically the most favorable, the experimentally observed (5,3) tube, suspended between two tips, corresponds to a local minimum in the variation of string-tension …

This paper deals with the summation problem of power series of the form Sba (f; x) = ∑a ≤ k ≤ b f(k) xk, where 0≤ a < b ≤ ∞, and {f(k)} is a given sequence of numbers with k Є [a, b) or f(t) is a differentiable function defined on [a, b). We present a symbolic summation operator with its various expansions, and construct several summation formulas with estimable remainders for Sba (f; x), by the aid of some classical interpolation series due to Newton, Gauss and Everett, respectively.

In this paper, we study Marcinkiewicz integral operators with rough kernels supported by surfaces given by flat curves. Under convexity assumptions on our surfaces, we establish an L^p boundedness result of such operators. Moreover, we obtain the L^p boundedness of the corresponding Marcinkiewicz integral operators that are related to area integral and Littlewood-Paley g_{\lambda}^* functions.

Fundamental properties of these type submanifolds such as the integrability of the distributions D, D^{\bot} and mixed-geodesic property are studied. The Center for Coastal Resources Management (CCRM) at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has generated Shoreline Situation Reports (SSRs) for coastal localities in the state of Maryland. This effort compliments a parallel effort in Virginia by the same group. SSRs were developed by VIMS in the 1970s for Virginia and have been the foundation for shoreline management planning in Tidewater Virginia ever since. CCRM has developed new protocols for collecting, disseminating, and reporting data relevant to shoreline management issues using state of the art mapping and remote sensing techniques. In the present work, suitably functionalized arylsydnones were used to synthesize a variety of 4-acylsydnones and diacyl sydnones, both as potential precursors to novel sydnoquinolines.The approach to the diacyl species is based on the discovery that activated sydnonesbrominate in both the 4 position of the sydnone ring and on the phenyl ring. Thus, it seemed likely that Friedel-Crafts reactions on an activated sydnone would give diacylated species for McMurray coupling to sydnoquinolines.
