The Noao Fundamental Plane Survey - Iii. Variations In The Stellar Populations Of Red-Sequence Galaxies From The Cluster Core To The Virial Radius, Russell J. S. Smith, Michael J. Hudson, John R. Lucey, Jenica E. Nelan, Gary A. Wegner
Dartmouth Scholarship
We analyse absorption line-strength indices for ~3000 red-sequence galaxies in 94 nearby clusters, to investigate systematic variations of their stellar content with location in the host cluster. The data are drawn from the NOAO Fundamental Plane Survey. Our adopted method is a generalization of that introduced by Nelan et al. to determine the global age-mass and metallicity-mass relations from the same survey. We find strong evidence for a change in galaxy properties, at fixed mass, over a range from the cluster centre to the virial radius, R_200. For example, red-sequence galaxies further out in the clusters have weaker Mgb5177 (at …

A Temporal Approximate Deconvolution Model For Large-Eddy Simulation, C. D. Pruett, B. C. Thomas, C. E. Grosch, T. B. Gatski
CCPO Publications
A temporal approximate deconvolution model (TADM) is developed for large-eddy simulation and is demonstrated for plane-channel flow at Re-tau=590. The TADM combines explicit causal time-domain filtering with linear deconvolution (defiltering) to approximate unfiltered fields and residual stress to arbitrarily high order. The TADM methodology appears to lead to a robust family of residual-stress models that should provide a viable alternative to conventional (spatial) filtering for applications in which spatial filtering is problematic, e.g., for problems requiring unstructured or highly stretched grids. Dynamic Contact Angle In Rim Instability Of Dewetting Holes, Sung-Hwan Choi, Bi-Min Zhang Newby
Dynamic Contact Angle In Rim Instability Of Dewetting Holes, Sung-Hwan Choi, Bi-Min Zhang Newby
Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering Faculty Research
The effects of dynamic contact angle (theta(d)), between a substrate and the melt of a dewetting polymer thin film, on the evolution of rim instabilities of dewetting holes were reported. Various theta(d)'s were achieved by covering SiOx surfaces with different coverage of octadecyltrichlorosilane. On each surface, the morphology of the dewetting holes was examined in detail as the hole grew to a certain size. Rim instabilities, in terms of undulations in both r and z directions, became more pronounced as theta(d) increased, under which condition, narrower and higher rims were also observed. Experimentally, atomic force microscopic scans of the rim …

Ripening sunflower fields in the northern Great Plains provide blackbirds with easily accessible sources of high-energy food. As many growers can attest, blackbirds can be nearly impossible to discourage from foraging in favored fields. Repellents sometimes can be effective feeding deterrents, especially if alternative foraging sites are readily available.
Relativistic Binaries In Globular Clusters, Matthew J. Benacquista
Relativistic Binaries In Globular Clusters, Matthew J. Benacquista
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations
The galactic population of globular- cluster's are old, dense star systems, with a typical cluster containing 104 -107 stars. As an old population of stars, globular clusters contain many collapsed and degenerate objects. As a dense population of stars, globular clusters are the scene of many interesting close dynamical interactions between stars. These dynamical interactions can alter the evolution of individual stars and can produce tight binary systems containing one or- two compact objects. In this review, we discuss the theoretical models of globular cluster evolution and binary evolution, techniques for simulating this evolution which lead to relativistic binaries, and …

Modeling Blackbird Abundance In The Prairie Pothole Region Using A Hierarchical Spatial Model, George M. Forcey, George M. Linz, Wayne E. Thogmartin, William J. Bleier
Modeling Blackbird Abundance In The Prairie Pothole Region Using A Hierarchical Spatial Model, George M. Forcey, George M. Linz, Wayne E. Thogmartin, William J. Bleier
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Blackbirds are ubiquitous members of the avian fauna in the Prairie Pothole Region. However, their abundance combined with their food habits make blackbirds significant agricultural pests on sunflower. Cost estimates for blackbird damage to sunflower in the northern Great Plains range from 4-11 million U.S. dollars per year. Because of their economic impact on agriculture, it is imperative to understand the environmental factors that influence blackbird abundance patterns. This study attempts to quantify the effects of landscape-level land use and climate patterns on blackbird abundance in the Prairie Pothole Region of the United States.

Changes In Dna Bending And Flexing Due To Tethered Cations Detected By Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer, Sarah L. Williams, Laura K. Parkhurst, Lawrence J. Parkhurst
Lawrence Parkhurst Publications
Local DNA deformation arises from an interplay among sequence-related base stacking, intrastrand phosphate repulsion, and counterion and water distribution, which is further complicated by the approach and binding of a protein. The role of electrostatics in this complex chemistry was investigated using tethered cationic groups that mimic proximate side chains. A DNA duplex was modified with one or two centrally located deoxyuracils substituted at the 5-position with either a flexible 3-aminopropyl group or a rigid 3-aminopropyn-1-yl group. End-to-end helical distances and duplex flexibility were obtained from measurements of the time-resolved Fö̈rster resonance energy transfer between 5’- and 3’-linked dye pairs. …

Fumonisins are a group of polyketide-derived mycotoxins produced by Fusarium Verticillioides, a filamentous fungus infecting corn and contaminating food and feeds. Fumonisins contain two tricarballylic esters that are critical for toxicity. Here, we present genetic and biochemical data for the esterification mechanism. FUM14 in F. Verticillioides has been deleted by homologous recombination, and the resultant mutant lost the ability to produce fumonisins. Two new metabolites, HFB3 and HFB4, which are biosynthetic precursors of fumonisins lacking the tricarballylic esters, were detected in the mutant. The results suggest that FUM14 is required for the esterification of fumonisins. FUM14 …

Search For Charged Higgs Bosons From Top Quark Decays In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1:96 Tev, A. Abulencia, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cdf Collaboration
Kenneth Bloom Publications
We report the results of a search for a charged Higgs boson in the decays of top quarks produced in pp̅ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. We use a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 193 pb-1 collected by the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab. No evidence for charged Higgs production is found, allowing 95% C.L. upper limits to be placed on BR(t→ H+b) for different charged Higgs decay scenarios. In addition, we present in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (mH±, tan β) plane the …

We present the first measurements of charge-dependent correlations on angular difference variables η1−η2 (pseudorapidity) and ϕ1−ϕ2 (azimuth) for primary charged hadrons with transverse momentum 0.15⩽pt⩽2 GeV/c and |η|⩽1.3 from Au–Au collisions at . We observe correlation structures not predicted by theory but consistent with evolution of hadron emission geometry with increasing centrality from one-dimensional fragmentation of color strings along the beam direction to an at least two-dimensional hadronization geometry along the beam and azimuth directions of a hadron-opaque bulk medium.

Theses and Dissertations
Mobile robots can be used in situations and environments that are distant from an operator. In order for an operator to control a robot effectively he or she requires an understanding of the environment and situation around the robot. Since the robot is at a remote distant from the operator and cannot be directly observed, the information necessary for an operator to develop an understanding or awareness of the robot's situation comes from the user interface. The usefulness of the interface depends on the manner in which the information from the remote environment is presented. Conventional interfaces for interacting with …

Coulomb activation of the four quasiparticle Kπ = 16+ 178Hf isomer (t 1/2 = 31 y) has led to the measurement of a set of Eλ matrix elements coupling the isomer band to the ground band. The present data combined with earlier 178Hf Coulomb excitation data have probed the K components in the wave functions and revealed the onset and saturation of K mixing in low-K bands, whereas the mixing is negligible in the high-K bands. The implications can be applied to other quadrupole-deformed nuclei.
Rational Realizations Of The Minimum Rank Of A Sign Pattern Matrix, Selcuk Koyuncu
Rational Realizations Of The Minimum Rank Of A Sign Pattern Matrix, Selcuk Koyuncu
Mathematics Theses
A sign pattern matrix is a matrix whose entries are from the set {+,-,0}. The minimum rank of a sign pattern matrix A is the minimum of the rank of the real matrices whose entries have signs equal to the corresponding entries of A. It is conjectured that the minimum rank of every sign pattern matrix can be realized by a rational matrix. The equivalence of this conjecture to several seemingly unrelated statements are established. For some special cases, such as when A is entrywise nonzero, or the minimum rank of A is at most 2, or the minimum rank …

Implications Of Late Pleistocene Climatic Change On The Morphological Variations Of The Neanderthal, Dawn Marie Bradley
Geosciences Theses
In this research, the relationship of climatic changes between 130k to 28k years BP to concurrent morphological variations in Neanderthals was tested. Traditional anthropological studies attribute robust Neanderthal morphological traits as an adaptation to a cold environment. A database of previously completed terrestrial paleoclimatic reconstructions in Europe and the Mediterranean was compiled and used to create a series of GIS-generated timeslice maps. Regional climatic conditions were then related to changes in Neanderthal appearances, morphology and disappearances as evident in the archaeological record. To establish climatic conditions, existing studies were compiled from two regions: Europe and the Mediterranean. The European data …

Fe-oxide and Fe-sulfide trace minerals in sediments and sedimentary rocks provide proxy records of biogeochemical processes, record past variations in the geomagnetic field, and can serve as proxies for climatic variations. An important class of these Feoxides is produced by bacteria. Magnetic particles produced by magnetotactic bacteria have been proposed as a primary recorder of the geomagnetic field in many terrestrial marine sediments, and have also been suggested to represent fossil evidence of life on the planet Mars. To better understand their distribution and preservation in the sediment column, and their relationship to other biochemical processes, we present rock-magnetic data …

Characterization, Functionalization And Applications Of Alkyl Monolayers On Silicon Surfaces, Guilin Jiang
Theses and Dissertations
Investigations were performed on the stability, mechanism of formation and an application of alkyl monolayers chemomechanically prepared on silicon surfaces. A new method of surface modification, laser-activation modification of surfaces (LAMS), and multivariate analyses of time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) images of LAMS spots were also reported. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and other data show that alkyl monolayers prepared by scribing silicon under 1-iodoalkanes and 1-alkenes were stable over extended periods of time to air, water, a boiling acid and Al Ka X-rays. The stability is attributed to direct Si-C bonding in the monolayers. The observation that the oxygen …

Analysis Of Compost Treatments To Establish Shrubs And Improve Water Quality, Brent G. Hallock, Anne Power, Steve Rein, Michael Curto, Misty Scharff
Earth and Soil Sciences
Utilization of compost as an erosion control tool is gaining momentum for many reasons. Compost offers excellent surface protection for reducing topsoil loss while providing a favorable substrate for hydroseed mixes. Soil moisture is retained and nutrients for vegetation are provided, meanwhile inhibiting undesirable plant species. However, there is wide variation in available compost sources and cost. Possible interactions between compost composition, soil type and vegetation production may occur. Hence, an experiment aimed to determine whether there is a noticeable difference in erosion control and seedling germination performance between several common types of compost applied at varying rates and methods …

Computer Science and Software Engineering
Image-based electronic editions enable researchers to view and study in an electronic environment historical manuscript images intricately linked to edition, transcript, glossary and apparatus files. Building image-based electronic editions poses a two-fold challenge. For humanities scholars, it is important to be able to use image and text to successfully encode the desired features of the manuscripts. Computer Scientists must find mechanisms for representing markup in its association both with the images, text and other auxiliary files and for making the representation available for efficient querying. This paper addresses the architecture of one such solution, that uses efficient data structures to …

A Binary Data Stream Scripting Language, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Lihua Wang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
Any file is fundamentally a binary data stream. A practical solution was achieved to interpret binary data stream. A new scripting language named Data Format Scripting Language (DFSL) was developed to describe the physical layout of the data in a structural, more intelligible way. On the basis of the solution, a generic software application was implemented; it parses various binary data streams according to their respective DFSL scripts and generates human-readable result and XML document for data sharing. Our solution helps eliminate the error-prone low-level programming, especially in the hardware devices or network protocol development/debugging processes.

Day/Night Visible Satellite Images, Frederick R. Mosher
Applied Aviation Sciences - Daytona Beach
Visible satellite images are very helpful for a wide variety of users. In particular, they are helpful in identifying areas of clouds and fog for general aviation pilots who must fly within sight of ground. However, visible satellite images have several major drawbacks, such as at night the visible pictures are black. Another problem is that it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between high clouds and low clouds. While the infrared channel can be used at night, frequently the low clouds and fog are near the temperature of the ground, so low clouds do not show up well on infrared …

Emission-line regions in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and other photoionized nebulae should become larger in size when the ionizing luminosity increases. This `breathing' effect is observed for the Hβ emission in NGC 5548 by using Hβ and optical continuum light curves from the 13-yr (1989-2001) AGN Watch monitoring campaign. To model the breathing, we use two methods to fit the observed light curves in detail: (i) parametrized models and, (ii) the MEMECHO reverberation-mapping code. Our models assume that optical continuum variations track the ionizing radiation, and that the Hβ variations respond with time-delays τ due to light travel-time. By fitting …
