Quasi-Monte Carlo For Highly Structured Generalised Response Models, I. H. Sloan, F. Y. Kuo, W. T. Dunsmuir, M. Wand, R. S. Womersley

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Highly structured generalised response models, such as generalised linear mixed models and generalised linear models for time series regression, have become an indispensable vehicle for data analysis and inference in many areas of application. However, their use in practice is hindered by high-dimensional intractable integrals. Quasi-Monte Carlo (QMC) is a dynamic research area in the general problem of high-dimensional numerical integration, although its potential for statistical applications is yet to be fully explored. We survey recent research in QMC, particularly lattice rules, and report on its application to highly structured generalised response models. New challenges for QMC are identified and …

Mqf: An Xml Based Multimedia Query Format, Kevin Adistambha, C. H. Ritz, I. S. Burnett

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

MQF is a new XML based format designed to facilitate communication between disparate systems for applications involving multimedia query by content. Currently no standardized protocol exists which are able to provide flexibility in formulation of a query, such as the combination of any multimedia format (image, video, sound) to serve as query terms, combined with very complicated query conditions that can utilize a hierarchy of meta-search engines. In this work, we propose MQF as a flexible solution to serve as a communication format between a client and server for use in content based multimedia searching.

Incorporating Results Of Avian Toxicity Tests Into A Model Of Annual Reproductive Success, Richard S. Bennett*, Matthew A. Etterson Jul 2007

Incorporating Results Of Avian Toxicity Tests Into A Model Of Annual Reproductive Success, Richard S. Bennett*, Matthew A. Etterson

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Modeling the effects of pesticide exposure on avian populations requires knowledge of how the pesticide changes survival and fecundity rates for the population. Although avian reproduction tests are the primary source of information on reproductive effects in the pesticide risk assessment process, current tests cannot provide a direct estimate of the effects of a pesticide on fecundity rates. We present a mathematical model that integrates information on specific types of effects from reproduction tests with information on avian life history parameters, the timing of pesticide applications, and the temporal pattern of pesticide exposure levels to estimate pesticide effects on annual …

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency Line Shapes For Large Probe Fields And Optically Thick Media, M. V. Pack, R. M. Camacho, John C. Howell Jul 2007

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency Line Shapes For Large Probe Fields And Optically Thick Media, M. V. Pack, R. M. Camacho, John C. Howell

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We calculate the line shape and linewidths for electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in optically thick, Doppler broadened media (buffer gasses are also considered). In generalizing the definition of the EIT linewidth to optically thick media, we find two different linewidth definitions apply depending on whether the experiment is pulsed or continuous wave (cw). Using the cw definition for the EIT line shape we derive analytic expressions describing the linewidth as a function of optical depth. We also review the EIT line shapes in optically thin media and provide physical arguments for how the line shapes change as a function of …

Obstacle Avoidance And Path Traversal Using Interactive Machine Learning, Jonathan M. Turner Jul 2007

Obstacle Avoidance And Path Traversal Using Interactive Machine Learning, Jonathan M. Turner

Theses and Dissertations

Recently there has been a growing interest in using robots in activities that are dangerous or cost prohibitive for humans to do. Such activities include military uses and space exploration. While robotic hardware is often capable of being used in these types of situations, the ability of human operators to control robots in an effective manner is often limited. This deficiency is often related to the control interface of the robot and the level of autonomy that control system affords the human operator. This thesis describes a robot control system, called the safe/unsafe system, which gives a human operator the …

A Framework For Dynamizing Succinct Data Structures, Ankur Gupta, Wing K. Hon, Rahul Shah, Jeffery S. Vitter

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

We present a framework to dynamize succinct data structures, to encourage their use over non-succinct versions in a wide variety of important application areas. Our framework can dynamize most stateof-the-art succinct data structures for dictionaries, ordinal trees, labeled trees, and text collections.

Peter Dowben Publications

We present, herein, an extended study of the half-Heusler alloy NiMnSb, starting with the deposition technique, continuing with the basic structural and magnetic properties of the thin films, and finishing with the electronic and compositional properties of their surfaces. The experimental methods we apply combine magnetization and magnetoresistivity measurements, atomic force microscopy, ferromagnetic resonance, x-ray and neutron diffraction, low energy electron diffraction, angle resolved x-ray photoemission, extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and spin polarized inverse photoemission spectroscopy. We find that stoichiometric surfaces exhibit close to 100% spin polarization at the centre of the surface …

A Dynamic-Trend Exponential Smoothing Model, Don Miller, Dan Williams Jul 2007

A Dynamic-Trend Exponential Smoothing Model, Don Miller, Dan Williams

Publications and Research

Forecasters often encounter situations in which the local pattern of a time series is not expected to persist over the forecasting horizon. Since exponential smoothing models emphasize recent behavior, their forecasts may not be appropriate over longer horizons. In this paper, we develop a new model in which the local trend line projected by exponential smoothing converges asymptotically to an assumed future long-run trend line, which might be an extension of a historical long-run trend line. The rapidity of convergence is governed by a parameter. A familiar example is an economic series exhibiting persistent long-run trend with cyclic variation. This …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Erbia Doped Metal Oxide Nanofibers For Applications In The Rmophotovoltaics, E. T. Bender, R. Wang, M. T. Aljarrah, Edward A. Evans, R. D. Ramsier Jul 2007

Synthesis And Characterization Of Erbia Doped Metal Oxide Nanofibers For Applications In The Rmophotovoltaics, E. T. Bender, R. Wang, M. T. Aljarrah, Edward A. Evans, R. D. Ramsier

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering Faculty Research

Titania (TiO2) nanofibers doped with erbia (Er2O3) have been synthesized by electrospinning mixtures of polymers, titanium-containing materials, and erbia particles. These electrospun nanofibers are subsequently annealed at temperatures of 800, 900, 1000, and 1050 degrees C to remove the organics and leave behind the metal oxides. The crystal structure and optical properties of the metal oxides depend on the annealing temperature, and we characterize these nanofibers using x-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). An Er2Ti2O7 phase is formed in an amount which depends on the annealing temperature, and relationships between the nature of FTIR spectra and the relative …

Isomorphisms Of Elliptic Curves Over Extensions Of Finite Fields, Mathew Niemerg Jul 2007

Isomorphisms Of Elliptic Curves Over Extensions Of Finite Fields, Mathew Niemerg

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

Our main interest lies in exploring isomorphisms of elliptic curves. In particular, we focus on two curves defined over a base field and look at which extension fields the curves are isomorphic over. Elliptic curves have a fascinating structure behind them. This structure allows for much to be explored and studied.

Double Integral Calculus Of Variations On Time Scales, Gusein Sh. Guseinov, Martin Bohner Jul 2007

Double Integral Calculus Of Variations On Time Scales, Gusein Sh. Guseinov, Martin Bohner

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We consider a version of the double integral calculus of variations on time scales, which includes as special cases the classical two-variable calculus of variations and the discrete two-variable calculus of variations. Necessary and sufficient conditions for a local extremum are established, among them an analogue of the Euler-Lagrange equation.

Suboptimality Conditions For Mathematical Programs With Equilibrium Constraints, Truong Q. Bao, Panjak Gupta, Boris S. Mordukhovich Jul 2007

Suboptimality Conditions For Mathematical Programs With Equilibrium Constraints, Truong Q. Bao, Panjak Gupta, Boris S. Mordukhovich

Mathematics Research Reports

In this paper we study mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints (MPECs) described by generalized equations in the extended form 0 is an element of the set G(x,y) + Q(x,y), where both mappings G and Q are set-valued. Such models arise, in particular, from certain optimization-related problems governed by variational inequalities and first-order optimality conditions in nondifferentiable programming. We establish new weak and strong suboptimality conditions for the general MPEC problems under consideration in finite-dimensional and infinite-dimensional spaces that do not assume the existence of optimal solutions. This issue is particularly important for infinite-dimensional optimization problems, where the existence of optimal …

Sorption-Enhanced Steam Reforming Of Hydrocarbons With Autothermal Sorbent Regeneration In A Moving Heat Wave Of Catalytic Combustion Reaction, Andrey N. Zagoruiko, Alexey G. Okunev

Andrey N Zagoruiko

Novel technological concept of sorption-enhanced hydrocarbon steam reforming with autothermal regeneration of the carbon dioxide scavenger in the moving super-adiabatic heat wave of the exothermic catalytic combustion reaction performed directly inside the adsorption-catalytic bed is presented. Process modelling results, confirming the capability and high efficiency of the proposed technological approach, are discussed. It is shown that proposed approach opens the way for creation of cheap, reliable and energy-saving adiabatic packed bed methane processors of unlimited processing capacity.

Control Of Porosity In Fluoride Thin Films Prepared By Vapor Deposition, Alexander H. King Jul 2007

Control Of Porosity In Fluoride Thin Films Prepared By Vapor Deposition, Alexander H. King

Alexander H. King

We have measured the porosity in thin films of lithium fluoride (LiF), magnesium fluoride (MgF2), barium fluoride (BaF2), and calcium fluoride (CaF2) as a function of the substrate temperature for films deposited by thermal evaporation onto glass substrates. The amount of porosity in the thin films was measured using an atomic force microscope and a quartz crystal thickness monitor. The porosity was very sensitive to the substrate temperature and decreased as the substrate temperature increased. Consistent behavior was observed among all of the materials in this study.

Posterminaries: Full Circle, Alexander H. King

Alexander H. King

A few years ago, I was walking near the old Union Station in Pittsburgh with a colleague only slightly younger than myself, when we happened upon some large-scale relics of the steel industry displayed for public viewing. “You don’t see too many of those in public parking lots,” I offered. “Um… what is it?” was the response. I suppose I was just a little surprised that a prominent materials scientist did not recognize a Bessemer converter—arguably the principal source of wealth during the U.S. industrial revolution—but this conversation took place back when steel was in decline, and many university Materials …

Salinity Constraints On Subsurface Archaeal Diversity And Methanogenesis In Sedimentary Rock Rich In Organic Matter, Steven T. Petsch, P. Waldron, A. M. Martini, K. Nüsslein Jul 2007

Salinity Constraints On Subsurface Archaeal Diversity And Methanogenesis In Sedimentary Rock Rich In Organic Matter, Steven T. Petsch, P. Waldron, A. M. Martini, K. Nüsslein

Steven T. Petsch

The diversity of microorganisms active within sedimentary rocks provides important controls on the geochemistry of many subsurface environments. In particular, biodegradation of organic matter in sedimentary rocks contributes to the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and other elements and strongly impacts the recovery and quality of fossil fuel resources. In this study, archaeal diversity was investigated along a salinity gradient spanning 8 to 3,490 mM Cl− in a subsurface shale rich in CH4 derived from biodegradation of sedimentary hydrocarbons. Shale pore waters collected from wells in the main CH4-producing zone lacked electron acceptors such as O2, NO3−, Fe3+, or SO42−. Acetate …

The Fabrication And Characterization Of Granular Aluminium/Palladium Bilayer Microbolometers, Thomas E. Wilson Jul 2007

The Fabrication And Characterization Of Granular Aluminium/Palladium Bilayer Microbolometers, Thomas E. Wilson

Physics Faculty Research

Superconducting granular aluminium/palladium bilayer microbolometers with subnanosecond response can be easily fabricated using an all lift-off process with image-reversal lithography. The palladium capping layer allows for convenient and reproducible Ohmic contacts to be made to the device. We report their fabrication, resistance–current calibration, responsivity and response time. Finally, a deconvolution algorithm is used to improve the time resolution to approximately 1 ns while obtaining the incident photon and phonon fluxes in both direct photoexcitation and phonon heat pulse experiments.

Quo Vadis, Cs? – On The (Non)-Impact Of Conceptual Structures On The Semantic Web, Sebastian Rudolph, Markus Krotzsch, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Conceptual Structures is a field of research which shares abstract concepts and interests with recent work on knowledge representation for the Semantic Web. However, while the latter is an area of research and development which is rapidly expanding in recent years, the former fails to participate in these developments on a large scale. In this paper, we attempt to stimulate the Conceptual Structures community to catch the Semantic Web train.

Light-Based Sample Reduction Methods For Interactive Relighting Of Scenes With Minute Geometric Scale, William B. Kerr, Fabio Pellacini Jul 2007

Light-Based Sample Reduction Methods For Interactive Relighting Of Scenes With Minute Geometric Scale, William B. Kerr, Fabio Pellacini

Computer Science Technical Reports

Rendering production-quality cinematic scenes requires high computational and temporal costs. From an artist's perspective, one must wait for several hours for feedback on even minute changes of light positions and parameters. Previous work approximates scenes so that adjustments on lights may be carried out with interactive feedback, so long as geometry and materials remain constant. We build on these methods by proposing means by which objects with high geometric complexity at the subpixel level, such as hair and foliage, can be approximated for real-time cinematic relighting. Our methods make no assumptions about the geometry or shaders in a scene, and …
