The electronic structures and magnetic properties of many rare-earth monopnictides are reviewed in this article. Possible candidate materials for spintronics devices from the rare-earth monopnictide family, i.e. high polarization (nominally half-metallic) ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, are identified. We attempt to provide a unified picture of the electronic properties of these strongly correlated systems. The relative merits of several ab initio theoretical methods, useful in the study of the rare-earth monopnictides, are discussed. We present our current understanding of the possible half-metallicity, semiconductor–metal transitions, and magnetic orderings in the rare-earth monopnictides. We present, herein, an extended study of the half-Heusler alloy NiMnSb, starting with the deposition technique, continuing with the basic structural and magnetic properties of the thin films, and finishing with the electronic and compositional properties of their surfaces. The experimental methods we apply combine magnetization and magnetoresistivity measurements, atomic force microscopy, ferromagnetic resonance, x-ray and neutron diffraction, low energy electron diffraction, angle resolved x-ray photoemission, extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and spin polarized inverse photoemission spectroscopy. We find that stoichiometric surfaces exhibit close to 100% spin polarization at the centre of the surface …

The Defense Department is transforming information-technology systems into a Global Information Grid (GIG) that will connect sensors to weapons systems and provide unprecedented situational awareness. The authors suggest that if not properly implemented, the GIG may overwhelm war fighters with information presented at the wrong time, at the wrong level of detail, and without proper analysis. This article proposes a model to direct the flow of information in the GIG.

Agent-based software systems and applications are constructed by integrating diverse sets of components that are intelligent, heterogeneous, distributed, and concurrent. This paper describes a multi-agent system to assure the operation efficiency and reliability in data fusion and management of a set of networked distributive sensors (NDS). We discuss the general concept and architecture of a Hierarchical Collective Agent Network (HCAN) and its functional components for learning and adaptive control of the NDS. Laser guide stars have increased the utility of adaptive optics systems by expanding the number of observable objects. The most common type of laser excites sodium in the mesosphere, and mesospheric sodium density is key to the performance of the laser. While a variety of observatories have conducted studies of the mesospheric sodium density, there are no published studies from Hawaii, which is home to some of the largest telescopes in the world. The O(1S) (green line) night airglow emission in response to atmospheric gravity wave (AGW) perturbations was simulated with a linear, one-dimensional model. The results were combined with previously modeled O2(b, 0–1) atmospheric band and OH Meinel band emission response (Liu and Swenson, 2003) to derive amplitude and phase relations among multiple airglow layers in response to gravity waves with various intrinsic parameters and damping rates (β). The simulations show that the vertical profile of the standard deviation of the perturbed green line volume emission rate (VER) has a centroid altitude that is 3 km …

The emergence of the software-as-a-service (SaaS) business model has attracted great attentions from both researchers and practitioners. SaaS vendors deliver on-demand information processing services to users, and thus offer computing utility rather than the standalone software itself. In this work, the author propose an analytical model to study the competition between the SaaS and the traditional COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) solutions for software applications. The author show that when software applications become open, modulated, and standardized, the SaaS business model will take a significant market share. In this paper we address this question from two distinct points of view, one local and one global in nature. There is currently a great interest in delayed chromosomal damage and other damaging effects of low-dose exposure to a variety of agents, which appear collectively to act through induction of stress-response pathways related to oxidative stress (and aging). These agents have been studied mostly in the radiation field but evidence is accumulating that chemicals, especially heavy metals, can also act in the same manner. Therefore, this work investigated the effects of metals and/or radiation in human fibroblasts in vitro. We propose a semantic framework for automatically identifying events as a step towards developing an adaptive middleware for Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Current related research focuses on adapting to events that violate certain non-functional objectives of the service requestor. Given the large of number of events that can happen during the execution of a service, identifying events that can impact the non-functional objectives of a service request is a key challenge. To address this problem we propose an approach that allows service requestors to create semantically rich service requirement descriptions, called semantic templates. A novel reinforcement-learning based output-adaptive neural network (NN) controller, also referred as the adaptive-critic NN controller, is developed to track a desired trajectory for a class of complex nonlinear discrete-time systems in the presence of bounded and unknown disturbances. The controller includes an observer for estimating states and the outputs, critic, and two action NNs for generating virtual, and actual control inputs. The critic approximates certain strategic utility function and the action NNs are used to minimize both the strategic utility function and their outputs. In this paper, a novel reinforcement learning neural network (NN)-based controller, referred to adaptive critic controller, is proposed for general multi-input and multi- output affine unknown nonlinear discrete-time systems in the presence of bounded disturbances. Adaptive critic designs consist of two entities, an action network that produces optimal solution and a critic that evaluates the performance of the action network. The critic is termed adaptive as it adapts itself to output the optimal cost-to-go function and the action network is adapted simultaneously based on the information from the critic. The iceberg cubing problem is to compute the multidimensional group-by partitions that satisfy given aggregation constraints. Pruning unproductive computation for iceberg cubing when nonantimonotone constraints are present is a great challenge because the aggregate functions do not increase or decrease monotonically along the subset relationship between partitions. In this paper, we propose a novel bound prune cubing (BP-Cubing) approach for iceberg cubing with nonantimonotone aggregation constraints. Given a cube over n dimensions, an aggregate for any group-by partition can be computed from aggregates for the most specific n--dimensional partitions (MSPs). The authors fabricated diodes of Au, Al, Ni, Pt, Pd, Mo, Ta, and Ir on single crystal ZnO(0001) surfaces from different vendors and measured their Schottky barriers, idealities, and reverse currents on as-received and remote oxygen (20% O2/80%He) plasma-treated surfaces. Using low temperature nanoscale depth-resolved cathodoluminescence spectroscopy (DRCLS) under the metal, the authors identified the presence of defect transitions at 2.1, 2.5, and 3.0 eV that change dramatically depending on the process steps and choice of metal. I-V measurements exhibited transitions from Ohmic to Schottky and lower idealities for Pt, Au, Ir, and Pd with plasma treatment. ZnO …

Electron and hole traps in N-doped ZnO were investigated using a structure of n+-ZnO:Al/i-ZnO/ZnO:N grown on a p-Si substrate by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (for growth of the ZnO:N layer) and sputtering deposition (for growth of the i-ZnO and n+-ZnO:Al layers). Current-voltage and capacitance-voltage characteristics measured at temperatures from 200 to 400 K show that the structure is an abrupt n+−p diode with very low leakage currents. By using deep level transient spectroscopy, two hole traps, H3 (0.35 eV) and H4 (0.48 eV), are found in the p-Si …

The Cosmic Ray Observatory Project (CROP) is a statewide education and research experiment involving Nebraska high school students, teachers and university undergraduates in the study of extensive cosmic-ray air showers. A network of high school teams construct, install, and operate school-based detectors in coordination with University of Nebraska physics professors and graduate students. The detector system at each school is an array of scintillation counters recycled from the Chicago Air Shower Array in weather-proof enclosures on the school roof, with a GPS receiver providing a time stamp for cosmic-ray events. We report theoretical investigations of the tomographic procedure suggested by Itatani et al. [Nature (London) 432, 867 (2004)] for reconstructing highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) using high-order harmonic generation (HHG). Due to the limited range of harmonics from the plateau region, we found that even under the most favorable assumptions, it is still very difficult to obtain accurate HOMO wave functions using the tomographic procedure, but the symmetry of the HOMOs and the internuclear separation between the atoms can be accurately extracted, especially when lasers of longer wavelengths are used to generate the HHG. Diffractive photoproduction of D*±(2010) mesons was measured with the ZEUS detector at the ep collider HERA, using an integrated luminosity of 78.6 pb-1. The D* mesons were reconstructed in the kinematic range: transverse momentum pT(D*) > 1.9 GeV and pseudorapidity |η(D*)|

Classical-Quantum Correspondence In Electron-Positron Pair Creation, N I. Chott, Qichang Su, Rainer Grobe

We examine the creation of electron-positron pairs in a very strong force field. Using numerical solutions to quantum field theory we calculate the spatial and momentum probability distributions for the created particles. A comparison with classical mechanical phase space calculations suggests that despite the fully relativistic and quantum mechanical nature of the matter creation process, most aspects can be reproduced accurately in terms of classical mechanics.

The development of on-line research practice across international boundaries is now a viable proposition using available asynchronous technologies such as computer conferencing. As has been reported in previous papers (Grodzinsky, et al, 2002; Griffin, et al, 2002) such use has proved to be extremely valuable for supporting the teaching of computing and ethics. However, asynchronous computer conferencing not only offers new opportunities for teaching and for supporting students, it also offers a valuable resource to researchers.
