Measurement Of Population Dynamics In Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage, Alina Gearba, H. A. Camp, M. L. Trachy, G. Veshapidze, M.H. Shah, H.U. Jang, B.D. Depaola

Faculty Publications

The temporal evolution of populations has been directly measured for a three-level ladder system undergoing coherent excitation by stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP). The measurement technique makes use of charge transfer as diagnostic. The method is model independent and has a temporal resolution of a few nanoseconds. The temporal evolution is measured for several values of the delay between the pump and Stokes laser pulses that are part of the STIRAP excitation scheme. The corresponding quantum Liouville equations are solved and the results of the calculations are compared with experiment.

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

Close pre-main-sequence binary stars are expected to clear central holes in their protoplanetary disks, but the extent to which material can flow from the circumbinary disk across the gap onto the individual circumstellar disks has been unclear. In binaries with eccentric orbits, periodic perturbation of the outer disk is predicted to induce mass flow across the gap, resulting in accretion that varies with the binary period. This accretion may manifest itself observationally as periodic changes in luminosity. Here we present a search for such periodic accretion in the pre-main-sequence spectroscopic binary UZ Tau E. We present BVRI photometry spanning 3 …

The Voltammetric Study Of The Reduction Of Tetraalkylammonium Perchlorate By Fe(Tpp)2-, Chathra Shirani De Silva, Michael D. Ryan Jul 2007

The Voltammetric Study Of The Reduction Of Tetraalkylammonium Perchlorate By Fe(Tpp)2-, Chathra Shirani De Silva, Michael D. Ryan

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Tetraalkylammonium ions react with Fe(TPP)2− to form Fe(TPP)(R) and trialkylamine. The tetrabutylammonium cation was verified to be the source of the alkyl group in the product, Fe(TPP)(R), by using (1H5C2)3(2H5C2)N as the cation and 2H NMR. The reaction of Fe(TPP)2− with Bu4N was monitored by cyclic voltammetry and thin layer spectroelectrochemistry. The activation parameters were measured, and were most consistent with an electron transfer (ET) mechanism. The rate of the reaction of tetramethyl and tetraethylammonium ions with Fe(TPP) …

The Buzz About Sustainability, John S. Farnsworth Jul 2007

The Buzz About Sustainability, John S. Farnsworth

Environmental Studies and Sciences

I wear sweater vests, I never split infinitives, I trim my beard close, and I read a poem at the beginning of every class. More to the point, as a member of the English faculty at a distinguished university, I distrust any word that had not been coined by the time my father—himself formerly a professor at a Jesuit university—completed his undergraduate studies.

So what am I doing as the faculty director of a Residential Learning Community (RLC) organized around the theme of “sustainability”?

In the past 18 months, the university that employs me hired its first sustainability coordinator, held …

Stochastic Modeling Of Retail Mortgage Loans Based On Past Due, Prepaid, And Default States, Chang Liu Jul 2007

Stochastic Modeling Of Retail Mortgage Loans Based On Past Due, Prepaid, And Default States, Chang Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

Stochastic models were developed that provide important measures related to retail mortgages and credit cards for the management of a bank. Based on Markov theory, two models were developed that predict mortgage portfolio size and expected duration of stay in each of the states, which are defined according to the criteria of Basel Accord II and the Federal Reserve Bank. Also, to facilitate comparisons among different types of credit products and different time periods, a model was developed to generate a health index for a retail mortgage. This model could be easily extended, using multivariate regression or multivariate time series …

Annual And Interannual Variability In The Wind Field And The Hydrography Along The Seward Line In The Northern Gulf Of Alaska, Isaac Schroeder Jul 2007

Annual And Interannual Variability In The Wind Field And The Hydrography Along The Seward Line In The Northern Gulf Of Alaska, Isaac Schroeder

OES Theses and Dissertations

The Northeast Pacific GLOBEC (GLOBal ocean Ecosystems dynamics) program (October 1997 to December 2004) collected hydrographic data along the Seward Line that stretches from the inner shelf (GAM 59.8°N, 149.5°W) and extends over 200 km beyond the continental slope (GAK13 58.1°N, 147.8°W). The complexity of the interannual hydrographic variability in this area stems from the interacting influences of local forcing such as winds, coastal freshwater discharge, eddies, fronts and remote forcing like El Niño-Southern Oscillation. Until now, the influence of winds on the system has been calculated using coarse resolution upwelling index data or spatially sparse buoy data. The coarse …

Investigating Real-Time Sonar Performance Predictions Using Beowulf Clustering, Charles Lane Cartledge Jul 2007

Investigating Real-Time Sonar Performance Predictions Using Beowulf Clustering, Charles Lane Cartledge

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Predicting sonar performance, critical to using any sonar to its maximum effectiveness, is computationally intensive and typically the results are based on data from the past and may not be applicable to the current water conditions. This paper discusses how Beowulf clustering techniques were investigated and applied to achieve real-time sonar performance prediction capabilities based on commercially off the shelf (COTS) hardware and software. A sonar system measures ambient noise in real-time. Based on the active sonar range scale, new ambient measurements can be available every 1 to 24 seconds. Traditional sonar performance prediction techniques operated serially and often took …

Distributed Knowledge Discovery In Large Scale Peer-To-Peer Networks, Sachin Shetty Jul 2007

Distributed Knowledge Discovery In Large Scale Peer-To-Peer Networks, Sachin Shetty

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Explosive growth in the availability of various kinds of data in distributed locations has resulted in unprecedented opportunity to develop distributed knowledge discovery (DKD) techniques. DKD embraces the growing trend of merging computation with communication by performing distributed data analysis and modeling with minimal communication of data. Most of the current state-of-the-art DKD systems suffer from the lack of scalability, robustness and adaptability due to their dependence on a centralized model for building the knowledge discovery model. Peer-to-Peer networks offer a better scalable and fault-tolerant computing platform for building distributed knowledge discovery models than client-server based platforms. Algorithms and communication …

Mixed Layer Dynamics Along The Seward Line In The Northern Gulf Of Alaska, Nandita Sarkar Jul 2007

Mixed Layer Dynamics Along The Seward Line In The Northern Gulf Of Alaska, Nandita Sarkar

OES Theses and Dissertations

The northern Gulf of Alaska marine ecosystem is very productive with a "nutrient paradox". Primary producers require light and nutrients for photosynthesis. A primary source of nutrients is the deep ocean, while light is available in a relatively shallow layer in the upper ocean. In most productive parts of the world oceans, nutrients are brought to surface waters by upwelling. However, in the northern Gulf of Alaska, the winds are generally downwelling inducing and the mechanism(s) by which nutrients are brought to the euphotic zone are not known. One mechanism that might bring nutrients into the euphotic zone is the …

Cave Development In Strata Of Ordovician-And Silurian-Devonian-Age In Highland County, Virginia, Carol Ann Peterson Jul 2007

Cave Development In Strata Of Ordovician-And Silurian-Devonian-Age In Highland County, Virginia, Carol Ann Peterson

OES Theses and Dissertations

Picturesque Highland County, Virginia, also known as "Virginia's Little Switzerland", is characterized by high mountains, tranquil rivers, and hundreds of caves. This study determines how geologic structures and processes control speleogenesis, or cave development, in the county. Solutional caves in Highland County are found in Ordovician limestones and dolostones and in Silurian- to Devonian-age limestones. Despite the lithologic and structural differences between the strata, caves in both sections tend to be similarly joint-controlled in directions of both regional strike (N40°E), dip (northwest or southeast), or in fractures intersecting at 60 and/or 120 degrees. Brittle failure, including fractures and faults induced …

On The Use Of Quasi-Newton Methods For The Minimization Of Convex Quadratic Splines, William Howard Thomas Ii Jul 2007

On The Use Of Quasi-Newton Methods For The Minimization Of Convex Quadratic Splines, William Howard Thomas Ii

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

In reformulating a strictly convex quadratic program with simple bound constraints as the unconstrained minimization of a strictly convex quadratic spline, established algorithms can be implemented with relaxed differentiability conditions. In this work, the positive definite secant update method of Broyden, Fletcher, Goldfarb, and Shanno (BFGS) is investigated as a tool to solve the unconstrained minimization problem. It is shown that there is a linear convergence rate and, for nondegenerate problems, the process terminates in a finite number of iterations. Numerical examples are provided.

Condensed And Expanded Sections In The Lower Mesaverde Clastic Wedge, Campanian Of Wyoming: Evidence For Tectonic Rectification Of Sea Level, Matthew W. Botzler Jul 2007

Condensed And Expanded Sections In The Lower Mesaverde Clastic Wedge, Campanian Of Wyoming: Evidence For Tectonic Rectification Of Sea Level, Matthew W. Botzler

OES Theses and Dissertations

The stratigraphy of the Cretaceous Western Interior basin indicates that sea level oscillated during the late Cretaceous. The oscillations were polyharmonic, with periods ranging from millions of years to hundred thousands and ten thousands of years. However, there is disagreement over the extent to which sea level change was global in nature and the extent to which it was driven by local uplift or subsidence (tectonism). In orogenic regions where subsidence, sediment supply, and eustatic variation are all affecting sea level, comparisons of high and low frequency cycles can help to sort out forcing mechanisms. Low frequency eustatic sea level …

Oil. China And Oil In The Asian Pacific Region: Rising Demand For Oil, Pablo Bustelo Jul 2007

Oil. China And Oil In The Asian Pacific Region: Rising Demand For Oil, Pablo Bustelo

New England Journal of Public Policy

China’s growing demand for oil is significantly changing the international geopolitics of energy, especially in the Asian Pacific region. The recent growth in oil consumption, combined with forecasts of increased oil imports (especially from the Middle East), have led to deep concern among Chinese leaders regarding their country’s energy security. They are responding in a number of different ways. In particular, they are searching for new sources of supply and seeking to control purchases and transport lanes, while boosting national production at any cost. This is already causing tension with the United States and other big oil consumers, such as …

Climate. Scrubbing The Sky: Climate Change And The Productive Center, Marcy Murninghan

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article sketches out the efforts of government, business, and civil society to address the problem of climate change. It identifies some of the key initiatives underway — including proposals for more stringent caps on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; the creation of a market-based trading system that provides incentives and profits for entities that reduce their GHG emission levels; more robust research and development of alternative energy sources as well as new approaches to traditional ones; and continued public education — and portrays the bipartisan, collaborative, multilateral nature of saving Mother Nature. While acknowledging that ultimately these efforts may be …

Future Impacts Of Fresh Water Resource Management: Sensitivity Of Coastal Deltas, Charles J. Vorosmarty, Jason P. Ericson, S Lawrence Dingman, Larry G. Ward Jul 2007

Future Impacts Of Fresh Water Resource Management: Sensitivity Of Coastal Deltas, Charles J. Vorosmarty, Jason P. Ericson, S Lawrence Dingman, Larry G. Ward

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

We present an assessment of contemporary and future effective sealevel rise (ESLR) using a sample of 40 deltas distributed worldwide. For any delta, ESLR is a net rate defined by eustatic sea-level rise, natural gross rates of fluvial sediment deposition and subsidence, and accelerated subsidence due to groundwater and hydrocarbon extraction. Present-day ESLR, estimated from geospatial data and a simple model of deltaic dynamics, ranges from 0.5 to 12.5 mm year-1. Reduced accretion of fluvial sediment from upstream siltation of reservoirs and freshwater consumptive irrigation losses are primary determinants of ESLR in nearly 70% of the deltas, while for only …

Exploiting Full-Waveform Lidar Data And Multiresolution Wavelet Analysis For Vertical Object Detection And Recognition, Christopher Parrish Jul 2007

Exploiting Full-Waveform Lidar Data And Multiresolution Wavelet Analysis For Vertical Object Detection And Recognition, Christopher Parrish

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

A current challenge in performing airport obstruction surveys using airborne lidar is lack of reliable, automated methods for extracting and attributing vertical objects from the lidar data. This paper presents a new approach to solving this problem, taking advantage of the additional data provided byfull-waveform systems. The procedure entails first deconvolving and georeferencing the lidar waveformdata to create dense, detailed point clouds in which the vertical structure of objects, such as trees, towers, and buildings, is well characterized. The point clouds are then voxelized to produce high-resolution volumes of lidar intensity values, and a 3D wavelet decomposition is computed. Verticalobject …

Genetic Evolution Of Hierarchical Behavior Structures, Brian G. Woolley, Gilbert L. Peterson Jul 2007

Genetic Evolution Of Hierarchical Behavior Structures, Brian G. Woolley, Gilbert L. Peterson

Faculty Publications

The development of coherent and dynamic behaviors for mobile robots is an exceedingly complex endeavor ruled by task objectives, environmental dynamics and the interactions within the behavior structure. This paper discusses the use of genetic programming techniques and the unified behavior framework to develop effective control hierarchies using interchangeable behaviors and arbitration components. Given the number of possible variations provided by the framework, evolutionary programming is used to evolve the overall behavior design. Competitive evolution of the behavior population incrementally develops feasible solutions for the domain through competitive ranking. By developing and implementing many simple behaviors independently and then evolving …

A Finite Difference Method For Studying Thermal Deformation In A Three-Dimensional Microsphere Exposed To Ultrashort-Pulsed Lasers, Xudong Du Jul 2007

A Finite Difference Method For Studying Thermal Deformation In A Three-Dimensional Microsphere Exposed To Ultrashort-Pulsed Lasers, Xudong Du

Doctoral Dissertations

Ultrashort-pulsed lasers with pulse durations on the order of sub-picoseconds to femtoseconds possess the capabilities in limiting the undesirable spread of the thermal process zone in a heated sample which have been attracting worldwide interest in science and engineering. Success of ultrashort-pulsed lasers in real application relies on: (1) well characterized pulse width, intensity and experimental techniques; (2) reliable microscale heat transfer models; and (3) prevention of thermal damage. Laser damage by ultrashort-pulsed lasers occurs after the heating pulse is over since the pulse duration time is extremely short and the heat flux is essentially limited to the region within …

Charm production in deep inelastic scattering has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 82 pb-1. Charm has been tagged by reconstructing D*+, D0, D+ and D+s (+ c.c.) charm mesons. The charm hadrons were measured in the kinematic range pT (D* +,D 0,D+) > 3GeV, pT (D+s ) > 2GeV and |η(D)| < 1.6 for 1.5 < Q2 < 1000GeV2 and 0.02 < y < 0.7. The production cross sections were used to extract charm fragmentation ratios and the fraction of c quarks hadronising into a particular charm meson in the kinematic range considered. The cross sections were compared to the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD, and extrapolated to the full kinematic region in pT (D) and η(D) in order to determine the open-charm contribution, Fcc2 (x,Q2), to the proton structure function F2. © SISSA 2007.
