Spin Effects In The Effective Quantum Field Theory Of General Relativity, A Ross, Br Holstein
Spin Effects In The Effective Quantum Field Theory Of General Relativity, A Ross, Br Holstein
Barry R Holstein
The calculation of gravitational scattering of particles with various spin configurations in the framework of effective quantum field theory of general relativity is presented. We find that the long-range quantum and classical corrections to the spin-independent piece and the spin–orbit coupling piece of the scattering amplitude and the scattering potential are universal for different spin configurations, which leads us to propose this universality to be true for arbitrary spins. Furthermore, we give the leading corrections to the spin–spin coupling, and a comparison with scattering in QED is made.

Structure And Magnetism Of V-Doped Sno2 Thin Films: Effect Of The Substrate, Jun Zhang, Ralph Skomski, Lanping Yue, Yongfeng Lu, David J. Sellmyer
David Sellmyer Publications
We report on the structure and magnetism of V-doped SnO2 thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition. The structure and magnetic properties of the films strongly depend on the substrates on which the films are grown. Films grown on Al2O3 substrates are single crystalline and show anisotropic in-plane magnetic moments, while films grown on Si substrates are nanocrystalline and show no anisotropy. Compared with that of single-crystalline films, the magnetic moment of nanocrystalline films is higher at low V concentration, decreases more quickly as the V concentration increases, and is more sensitive to vacuum annealing. Our …
Preheating And Affleck-Dine Leptogenesis After Thermal Inflation, Gary Felder, Hyunbyuk Kim, Wan-Il Park, Ewan D. Stewart
Preheating And Affleck-Dine Leptogenesis After Thermal Inflation, Gary Felder, Hyunbyuk Kim, Wan-Il Park, Ewan D. Stewart
Physics: Faculty Publications
Previously, we proposed a model of low energy Affleck-Dine leptogenesis in the context of thermal inflation. The lepton asymmetry is generated at the end of thermal inflation, which occurs at a relatively low energy scale with the Hubble parameter somewhere in the range 1 keV ≲ H ≲ 1 MeV. Thus Hubble damping will be ineffective in bringing the Affleck-Dine field into the lepton conserving region near the origin, leaving the possibility that the lepton number could be washed out. Previously, we suggested that preheating could damp the amplitude of the Affleck-Dine field allowing conservation of the lepton number. In …

Elucidation Of Double Bond Position In Unsaturated Lipids By Ozone Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (Ozesi-Ms), M. C. Thomas, Todd Mitchell, J. M. Deeley, D. G. Harman, R. C. Murphy, Stephen J. Blanksby
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
The position(s) of carbon-carbon double bonds within lipids can dramatically affect their structure and reactivity and thus has a direct bearing on biological function. Commonly employed mass spectrometric approaches to the characterization of complex lipids however, fail to localize sites of unsaturation within the molecular structure and thus cannot distinguish naturally occurring regioisomers. In a recent communication [Thomas, Mitchell, Blanksby in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2006, 128, 58-59] we have presented a new technique for the elucidation of double bond position in glycerophospholipids using ozone-induced fragmentation within the source of a conventional electrospray ionization mass spectrometer. Here …
Simulated Ducting Of High-Frequency Atmospheric Gravity Waves In The Presence Of Background Winds, Yonghui Yu, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D.
Simulated Ducting Of High-Frequency Atmospheric Gravity Waves In The Presence Of Background Winds, Yonghui Yu, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D.
Publications
A new nonlinear and time-dependent model is used to derive the total perturbation energy flux of two gravity wave packets propagating from the troposphere to the lower thermosphere. They are excited by a heat source and respectively propagate in an eastward and westward direction in the presence of a zonal wind. Analysis of the refractive index, the power spectra and the total perturbation energy flux allows us to correctly interpret the ducting characteristics of these two wave packets. In our study the wind acts as a directional filter to the wave propagations and causes noticeable spectral variations at higher altitudes. …

The Acs Survey Of Galactic Globular Clusters. Ii. Stellar Evolution Tracks, Isochrones, Luminosity Functions, And Synthetic Horizontal-Branch Models, Aaron Dotter, Brian Chaboyer, Darko Jevremović, E. Baron
Dartmouth Scholarship
The ACS Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters, an HST Treasury Project, will deliver high-quality, homogeneous photometry of 65 globular clusters. This paper introduces a new collection of stellar evolution tracks and isochrones suitable for analyzing the ACS survey data. Stellar evolution models were computed at [Fe/H] = -2.5, -2.0, -1.5, -1.0, -0.5, and 0; [α/Fe] = -0.2, 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8; and three initial He abundances for masses from 0.1 to 1.8 M⊙ and ages from 2 to 15 Gyr. Each isochrone spans a wide range in luminosity, from MV ~ 14 up to the tip …
Mapping Middle Paleozoic Erosional And Karstic Patterns With 3-D Seismic Attributes And Well Data In The Arkoma Basin, Oklahoma, Alonzo R. Brinkerhoff
Mapping Middle Paleozoic Erosional And Karstic Patterns With 3-D Seismic Attributes And Well Data In The Arkoma Basin, Oklahoma, Alonzo R. Brinkerhoff
Theses and Dissertations
Newly available industry well data and seismic attribute analysis reveal that late Ordovician-early Devonian Hunton Group strata are more widespread (i.e., not removed by mid-Devonian erosion) in the central and southern portions of the Arkoma Basin in eastern Oklahoma than previously thought. This study demonstrates the value of applying seismic attribute analysis to problems of quantifying and mapping stratigraphic features caused by erosions and/or karstification. Well and seismic isochron data in the Red Oak petroleum field for the Viola-Woodford interval (the units that lie stratigraphically beneath and above, respectively, the Huton Group) show isolated ~40-m thick lenses of Hunton rocks, …
Cosmological Moduli Dynamics, Scott Watson, Brian Greene, Simon Judes, Amanda Weltman
Cosmological Moduli Dynamics, Scott Watson, Brian Greene, Simon Judes, Amanda Weltman
Physics - All Scholarship
Low energy effective actions arising from string theory typically contain many scalar fields, some with a very complicated potential and others with no potential at all. The evolution of these scalars is of great interest. Their late time values have a direct impact on low energy observables, while their early universe dynamics can potentially source inflation or adversely affect big bang nucleosynthesis. Recently, classical and quantum methods for fixing the values of these scalars have been introduced. The purpose of this work is to explore moduli dynamics in light of these stabilization mechanisms. In particular, we explore a truncated low …

Sensors: Collaborative Research: Aloha Mooring Sensor Network And Adaptive Sampling, Emmanuel S. Boss
University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports
The PIs propose to develop a moored deep-ocean sensor network that will first be installed at the Hawaii Ocean Time-series (HOT)/ALOHA Observatory (AO) and then at other cabled observatory sites as they are implemented. This moored sensor network is based on a profiler that will move between near-surface and fixed abyssal sensors under program control. The PIs feel that this project will demonstrate the scientific potential of combining adaptive sampling methods with a moored series of profiling sensors. The PIs will also develop optimization software tools to maximize overall information return given the constraints of competing scientific objectives, the continually …

We present strange particle spectra and yields measured at midrapidity in √s=200 GeV proton-proton (p+p) collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). We find that the previously observed universal transverse mass (mT≡√pT2+m2) scaling of hadron production in p+p collisions seems to break down at higher mT and that there is a difference in the shape of the mT spectrum between baryons and mesons. We observe midrapidity antibaryon to baryon ratios near unity for Λ and Ξ baryons and no dependence of the ratio on transverse momentum, indicating that our data do not yet reach the quark-jet dominated region. …

A Series Of Vertically Integrated Nanotechnology Experiments For The Undergraduate Curriculum, Kevin W. Kittredge, Lesley E. Russell, Michael C. Leopold
Chemistry Faculty Publications
We have designed three nanotechnology experiments that are vertically integrated for an undergraduate chemistry curriculum. They are an evolving set of experiments for sequential courses in an undergraduate chemistry program. These experiments are designed to match the student's level of understanding for each particular course. The participating student is involved in a "research" project that progresses in both theory and experimental technique. Students benefit from these vertically integrated experiments by being involved in multiple facets of a simulated research project. This mimics a traditional research project under an advisor's supervision without the undesired drawback of an unknown outcome.
Vision-Based Control And Flight Optimization Of A Rotorcraft Uav, David Christian Hubbard
Vision-Based Control And Flight Optimization Of A Rotorcraft Uav, David Christian Hubbard
Theses and Dissertations
A Rotorcraft UAV provides an ideal experimental platform for vision-based navigation. This thesis describes the flight tests of the US Army PALACE pro ject, which implements Moravec's pseudo-normalized correlation tracking algorithm. The tracker uses the movement of the landing site in the camera, a laser range, and the aircraft attitude from an IMU to estimate the relative motion of the UAV. The position estimate functions as a GPS equivalent to enable the rotorcraft to maneuver without the aid of GPS. Flight tests were performed with obstacles and over concrete, asphalt, and grass in daylight conditions with a safe landing area …

Session 11 - Radioactive Dispersion Devices (Rdd): What Are The Odds?, Dennis Bechtel
International Symposium on Technology and Society
Since the tragic events of September 11th, 2001 there has been apprehension that the United States may be ill-prepared to prevent future terrorist events. One source of concern is that a Radioactive Dispersion Device (RDD) could be detonated at a vulnerable target anywhere in the nation. A RDD, also known as a “dirty bomb, is a conventional explosive packed with radioactive material. The explosion could disperse radioactive material over a wide area. The target could be an icon associated with American democracy and government, critical systems and infrastructure, a water supply, a nuclear power plant and others. Such an event …

International Symposium on Technology and Society
Probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) methodological limitations as well as environmental application-specific features confound much needed objective analysis and hope for equitable remediation of anthropogenic climate change. Issues addressed include: risk subjectivism, the difficulty of mathematical and computer model prediction-validity assessment associated with chaotic system dynamics, as well as standards of scholarship and the obstacle to societal reform posed by commercial, consumer-driven mass-media journalism.

Spatial And Temporal Variation In The Diet Of Coyotes In The Chicago Metropolitan Area, Paul S. Morey, Eric M. Gese
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Coyotes (Canis latrans) are an opportunistic predator that have adapted to many human-modified environments. Conflicts between coyotes and humans are an increasing concern for managers in urban areas. We examined the spatial and temporal utilization and availability of natural and human-associated food for coyotes in the Chicago metropolitan area, Illinois, USA. We collected 1429 coyote scats from May 2000 to December 2002, and conducted prey surveys in 2002, in 4 sites that varied in their degree of urban development. Dominant food items included small rodents, white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), fruit, eastern cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus) …

Session 7 - A Comparative Geographic Analysis Of The Impact Of Scale On Hazards And Vulnerability In Industrialized Continental Lands And Small Pacific Islands, William J. Smith Jr.
International Symposium on Technology and Society
Geography, specifically scale, has significant impacts in terms of hazards and vulnerability. Small islands, such as those found in the Pacific, experience the impacts of their relatively unique geography and scale in terms of hazards and vulnerability in at least five ways: 1) Perception and communication; 2) Impact and escape from impact; 3) Technology; 4) Recovery; and 5) Socio-environmental justice. Comparative analysis in these five areas between the Pacific’s small islands and industrialized continental regions illuminates differences regarding the way hazards and vulnerability should be conceptualized in the under-treated small islands of the world. Lessons from this analysis will aid …

Session 7 - Technology And The Creation Of Wilderness: The Making Of Quabbin Reservoir, Timothy J. Farnham
International Symposium on Technology and Society
Large dams in the United States have frequently been the targets of attacks by environmentalists who believe that the dams and the reservoirs they create are violations of wilderness. There are currently numerous proposals to dismantle some dams in order to restore river ecosystems to their pre-dam conditions, including Hetch Hetchy Reservoir’s O’ Shaunnessy Dam. Less attention has been paid to those dams and reservoirs that have arguably created protected areas that otherwise may have been subject to degradation from development. The Quabbin Reservoir, the primary water source for metropolitan Boston, serves as a prime example. Viewed as an engineering …

Session 6 - The National Environmental Policy Act (Nepa): Is It All That It Can Be? The Case For Evaluating Stigma Effects, Dennis Bechtel
International Symposium on Technology and Society
The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) has long been regarded as the“Magna Carta” of environmental policy legislation. The government in implementing its requirements on NEPA is required to evaluate potential environmental impacts from “significant” projects, to examine alternatives to proposed actions, and to enable the public to provide meaningful input to decision-makers. Despite the significance of NEPA there is evidence to suggest that environmental impact analyses may in fact be understating potential negative effects to citizens and communities. In particular potential impacts associated with stigma have been almost universally ignored in documents prepared under NEPA. The proposed high-level nuclear waste …

Session 2 - Societal-Consciousness In The Computing Curricula: A Time For Serious Introspection, Daniel Moix, Srini Ramaswamy
International Symposium on Technology and Society
This paper addresses the growing need for inculcating appropriate ethics within the computing curriculum by fostering the development of a societally-conscious ethical framework among our students to address the use of information technology vis-à-vis government, business and society. We propose a new integrated model based approach (IDEA) and suggest its adoption to encourage students on reflecting upon the social and ethical ramifications of technology, beyond the narrow, project focused tunnel vision that currently (subliminally) exists in many computing curricula, and in particular, in today’s profit-focused, consulting and contract-based software industry.

Session 1 - Rationalizing The Home Front: The Cold War, The Nevada Test Site, And Radiation Exposure, Leisl A. Carr
International Symposium on Technology and Society
Beginning in 1953, radiation exposure and its effects became a hotly contested issue between the government, members of communities surrounding the Nevada Test Site (NTS), and researchers within the national scientific community. The Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), concerned about maintaining a continental testing facility and aware that atomic testing would impact communities surrounding the NTS, sent representatives to areas potentially affected by fallout to instruct and reassure the affected public. How government officials perceived neighboring communities and how these communities perceived these representatives of the government often determined public responses to the atomic testing program. The story of radiation monitors …
The Stabilizing Effect Of Noise On The Dynamics Of A Boolean Network, Christopher S. Goodrich, Mihaela Teodora Matache
The Stabilizing Effect Of Noise On The Dynamics Of A Boolean Network, Christopher S. Goodrich, Mihaela Teodora Matache
Mathematics Faculty Publications
In this paper, we explore both numerically and analytically the robustness of a synchronous Boolean network governed by rule 126 of cellular automata. In particular, we explore whether or not the introduction of noise into the system has any discernable effect on the evolution of the system. This noise is introduced by changing the states of a given number of nodes in the system according to certain rules. New mathematical models are developed for this purpose. We use MATLAB to run the numerical simulations including iterations of the real system and the model, computation of Lyapunov exponents, and generation of …
