Acquisition Of Owl Dl Axioms From Lexical Resources, Johanna Volker, Pascal Hitzler, Philipp Cimiano Jun 2007

Acquisition Of Owl Dl Axioms From Lexical Resources, Johanna Volker, Pascal Hitzler, Philipp Cimiano

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

State-of-the-art research on automated learning of ontologies from text currently focuses on inexpressive ontologies. The acquisition of complex axioms involving logical connectives, role restrictions, and other expressive features of the Web Ontology Language OWL remains largely unexplored. In this paper, we present a method and implementation for enriching inexpressive OWL ontologies with expressive axioms which is based on a deep syntactic analysis of natural language definitions. We argue that it can serve as a core for a semi-automatic ontology engineering process supported by a methodology that integrates methods for both ontology learning and evaluation. The feasibility of our approach is …

Regulation Of Cell Diameter, For3p Localization, And Cell Symmetry By Fission Yeast Rho-Gap Rga4p, Maitreyi Das, David J. Wiley, Saskia Medina, Helen A. Vincent, Michelle D. Larrea, Andrea Oriolo, Fulvia Verde Jun 2007

Regulation Of Cell Diameter, For3p Localization, And Cell Symmetry By Fission Yeast Rho-Gap Rga4p, Maitreyi Das, David J. Wiley, Saskia Medina, Helen A. Vincent, Michelle D. Larrea, Andrea Oriolo, Fulvia Verde

Chemistry and Physics Faculty Articles

Control of cellular dimensions and cell symmetry are critical for development and differentiation. Here we provide evidence that the putative Rho-GAP Rga4p of Schizosaccharomyces pombe controls cellular dimensions. rga4Δ cells are wider in diameter and shorter in length, whereas Rga4p overexpression leads to reduced diameter of the growing cell tip. Consistent with a negative role in cell growth control, Rga4p protein localizes to the cell sides in a “corset” pattern, and to the nongrowing cell tips. Additionally, rga4Δ cells show an altered growth pattern similar to that observed in mutants of the formin homology protein For3p. Consistent with …

E-Business Strategy And Firm Performance: A Latent Class Assessment Of The Drivers And Impediments To Success, T. R. Coltman, T.M. Devinney, D. F. Midgley Jun 2007

E-Business Strategy And Firm Performance: A Latent Class Assessment Of The Drivers And Impediments To Success, T. R. Coltman, T.M. Devinney, D. F. Midgley

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Among many leading organizations, in all sectors of industry, commerce and government, there is considerable evidence of e-business being deployed to achieve strategic goals. Where this deployment has been most successful, there is a strong case that the organization has taken an integrated approach that both builds on the organization's strengths and pays careful attention to the process of change within the organization. However, in the literature most empirical work has either studied e-business strategy and performance from the perspective of strategy content - which highlights positioning and/or unique bundles of resources - or from the perspective of strategy process …

Trigonometry Without Sines And Geometry Without Angles, Phillip Lestmann Jun 2007

Trigonometry Without Sines And Geometry Without Angles, Phillip Lestmann

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2007

In his book, Divine Proportions, N. J. Wildberger advocates for a "rational" trigonometry by substituting the squares of the common trigonometric ratios for those ratios themselves. This presentation examines and critiques the claims of the book by evaluating its presented methods.

Rules And Insights: Connecting The Mathematical And Linguistic Abilities Of C.S. Lewis, Kim Jongerius Jun 2007

Rules And Insights: Connecting The Mathematical And Linguistic Abilities Of C.S. Lewis, Kim Jongerius

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2007

While most biographical works on C.S. Lewis give passing reference to Lewis' problems with elementary mathematics, few have made an attempt at diagnosing the difficulty or exploring its impact on his writing. A careful study of family correspondence, however, makes it clear that his learning difficulties were not with mathematics alone and suggests connections between attitudes toward and abilities in both mathematics and language. This paper will make these connections clear and will illustrate their ties to Lewis' effective mathematical references.

Connection-Oriented Computer Science Education, Kim Kihlstrom Jun 2007

Connection-Oriented Computer Science Education, Kim Kihlstrom

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2007

Computers play an important role in every area of our society and are integral in every academic discipline. Today's computer science students need a background that will prepare them for the expanding range of computing opportunities. The opportunities for computer professionals are varied and increasing in diversity. However, undergraduate computer science programs tend to be narrowly focused on programming and related technical skills. Female students in particular tend to be highly interested in exploring connections between computer science and other fields.

How can we leverage these observations at a liberal arts college, where interdisciplinary connections are highly desirable, and where …

Bach (To The Calculus Of) Variations, Charles R. Hampton

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2007

While it is quite common for professionals (doctors, lawyers, academics, etc) to be talented in many ways, including musical talent, there is a special connection between music and mathematics. Musicians collectively are not more talented in mathematics than other professionals and other academics. This paper examines the connections between math and music, particularly calculus and the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.

A Theoretical Model For Blood Flow In Small Vessels, V. P. Srivastava Jun 2007

A Theoretical Model For Blood Flow In Small Vessels, V. P. Srivastava

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

A two-fluid model consisting of a core region of suspension of all the erythrocytes (particles) in plasma (fluid) assumed to be a particle-fluid mixture and a peripheral layer of cell-free plasma (Newtonian fluid), has been proposed to represent blood flow in small diameter tubes. The analytical results obtained in the proposed model for effective viscosity, velocity profiles and flow rate have been evaluated numerically for various values of the parameters available from published works. Quantitative comparison has shown that present model suitability represents blood flow at hematocrit (less than or equal to 40%) and in vessels up to 70 micrometers …

A Complexification Of Rolle’S Theorem, J. P. Pemba, A. R. Davies, N. K. Muoneke

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

A new version of the classical Rolle’s theorem is proved for any complex-valued differentiable function of the complex variable on an open connected convex subset of the complex field. The associated Mean-Value theorem follows naturally. A few explicit illustrative examples are provided in the closing section of the paper.

Parameter Estimation In Nonlinear Coupled Advection-Diffusion Equation, Robert R. Ferdinand Jun 2007

Parameter Estimation In Nonlinear Coupled Advection-Diffusion Equation, Robert R. Ferdinand

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper a coupled system of two nonlinear advection-diffusion equations is presented. Such systems of equations have been used in mathematical literature to describe the dynamics of contaminant present in groundwater flowing through cracks in a porous rock matrix and getting absorbed into it. An inverse method procedure that approximates infinite-dimensional model parameters is described and convergence results for the parameter approximants are proved. This is finally followed by a computational experiment to compare theoretical and numerical results to verify accuracy of the mathematics analysis presented.

State Of The Climate In 2006 Executive Summary, A. Arguez, A.M. Waple, A.M. Sanchez-Lugo

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

On the heels of 2005’s record-breaking weather events, 2006 was also a year of records. This was especially the case over the polar regions, where the largest Antarctic ozone hole on record occurred in 2006. Sea ice extent in the Antarctic reached records at times for both maximum and minimum extent, and in the Arctic, scientists observed the second smallest sea ice extent on record (behind 2005). These record events came as attention to the polar regions gained greater focus, thanks in large part to the International Polar Year, during which an unprecedented effort is underway to monitor the Arctic …

Skin Lesions On Blue Whales Off Southern Chile: Possible Conservation Implications?, Robert L. Brownell Jr., Carole A. Carlson, Barbara Galletti Vernazzani, Elsa Cabrera

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

We report on three types of skin lesions in a population of blue whales, Balaenoptera musculus, off the northwestern coast of Isla Grande de Chiloe, Chile. These lesions were: (1) cookie-cutter shark, Isistius brasilensis, bites, (2) vesicular or blister lesions, and (3) a tattoo-like skin disease. The presence of these lesions was determined by the examining photos collected in 2006 and 2007 for a blue whale photo-identification project. We examined 289 photographs of 68 individuals for lesions. The cookie-cutter shark lesions are common on these blue whales and similar to those reported from other species of cetaceans. Skin …

Modeling And Design Of High Force Rfmems Contact Switches, Joseph Eid Estefanous Zekry Jun 2007

Modeling And Design Of High Force Rfmems Contact Switches, Joseph Eid Estefanous Zekry

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes the modeling and design issues of high force electrostatically actuated RFMEMS contact switches. Various reliability issues and challenges are associated with the design of RFMEMS contact switches. The reliability of microcontacts is of major importance in increasing the lifetime of such devices. A semi-analytical model based on the beam deflection theory is developed to calculate the contact force delivered by parallel-plate electrostatically actuated switch structures. The model is capable of fast and accurate static solution for complicated switch structures which are normally analyzed using finite element analysis techniques. High force designs are presented together with finite element …

An Age-Structured Resource-Consumer Dynamical Model, Jean M. Tchuenche Jun 2007

An Age-Structured Resource-Consumer Dynamical Model, Jean M. Tchuenche

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Many dynamical systems in population biology in which agents compete for resources may exhibit chaotic fluctuations. This short letter develops Gamarra and Solé's previous work. We briefly review a classical model of population with complex dynamics, and proceed to study the dynamics of an age-structured resource-consumer model, in which the fertility coefficients are density independent. Implicit or first integral solutions of the model are obtained, and conditions for which they are stable given. It is observed that resource availability at any time depends on the number of potential consumers present.

An Investigation Of Introductory Physics Students’ Approaches To Problem Solving, Laura Walsh, Robert Howard, Brian Bowe Jun 2007

An Investigation Of Introductory Physics Students’ Approaches To Problem Solving, Laura Walsh, Robert Howard, Brian Bowe

Articles

This paper outlines ongoing research investigating students’ approaches to quantitative and qualitative problem solving in physics. This is an empirical study, which was conducted using a phenomenographic approach to analyse and interpret data from individual semi-structured interviews with students from introductory physics courses. The result of the study thus far is a preliminary set of hierarchical categories that describe the students’ problem-solving approaches when faced with various physics problems. The findings from the research presented here indicate that many introductory students in higher education do not approach problem solving in a strategic manner and many do not try to link …
