- Spring-time diurnal surveys for relict leopard frogs were conducted at all sites.
- Relict leopard frog annual translocation effort was initiated. Currently, 2,153 tadpoles are being reared at the Hill Top and Willow Beach Fish Hatchery facilities. Quagga mussels found at the hatchery might not be as problematic for this program as originally thought. Current prophylactic protocols for disease treatment in tadpoles and frogs are being evaluated for their ability to kill quagga mussel larvae.
- Coordination and monitoring was provided to EPMT crews conducting tamarisk control at relict leopard frog sites in …

The Role Of Phosducin-Like Protein As A Co-Chaperone With The Cytosolic Chaperonin Complex In Assembly Of The G Protein Βγ Subunit Dimer, Paul Jayson Ludtke
Theses and Dissertations
Phosducin-like protein (PhLP) has been shown to interact with the cytosolic chaperonin containing TCP-1 (CCT), and the βγ subunit dimer of heterotrimeric G proteins (Gβγ). Here we provide details obtained from cryo-electron microscopic and biochemical studies on the structure of the complex between the cytosolic chaperonin CCT and PhLP. Binding of PhLP to CCT occurs through only one of the two chaperonin rings, making multiple contacts with CCT through both its N- and C-terminal domains. In addition, we show that PhLP acts as a co-chaperonin along with CCT in mediating the assembly of the G protein βγ subunit and that …

Measurements of two-particle correlations on transverse momentum pt for Au–Au collisions at GeV are presented. Significant large-momentum-scale correlations are observed for charged primary hadrons with 0.15 ≤ pt ≤ 2 GeV/c and pseudorapidity |η| ≤ 1.3. Such correlations were not observed in a similar study at lower energy and are not predicted by theoretical collision models. Their direct relation to mean-pt fluctuations measured in the same angular acceptance is demonstrated. Positive correlations are observed for pairs of particles which have large pt values while negative correlations occur for pairs in which one particle has …

Fast Adaptive Penalized Splines, Tatyana Krivobokova, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu, Goran Kauermann
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
This paper proposes a numerically simple routine for locally adaptive smoothing. The locally heterogeneous regression function is modelled as a penalized spline with a smoothly varying smoothing parameter modelled as another penalized spline. This is being formulated as hierarchical mixed model, with spline coe±cients following a normal distribution, which by itself has a smooth structure over the variances. The modelling exercise is in line with Baladandayuthapani, Mallick & Carroll (2005) or Crainiceanu, Ruppert & Carroll (2006). But in contrast to these papers Laplace's method is used for estimation based on the marginal likelihood. This is numerically simple and fast and …

In a study of a dose-response relationship, flexibility in modelling is essential to capturing the treatment effect when the mean effect of other covariates is not fully understood, so that observed treatment effect is not due to the imposition of a rigid model for the relationship between response, treatment, and other variables. A semiparametric additive linear mixed (SPALM) model (Ruppert et al. 2003) provides a tractable and flexible approach to modelling the influence of potentially confounding variables. In this paper, we present pure likelihood and Bayesian versions of the SPALM model. Both methods of inference are readily implementable, but the …

The authors report on a study of dipole flip-flop “local” transition in ferroelectric polyvinylidene fluoride [P(VDF)] chains, using total energy calculation based on the density functional theory. The calculated results indicate that a simple flipping of a single electric dipole moment is energetically allowed. Furthermore, such a flipping involves no change either in bond length, bond angle, or the orientation of the chain. The calculations also show that on a thin film of ordered chains, strong dipole interactions existing in P(VDF) could cause modulation of the dipole orientation thus forming superlattices on P(VDF) films. These results are in good agreement …

Identification And Catalog Of Holocene And Late Pleistocene Chiropteran Fossils From Hamilton County, Tn, Ashley Miller
Honors Theses
Caves play an essential role in our understanding of the Pleistocene Epoch. Caves represent the largest percentage of known North American Pleistocene faunas (Kurten and Anderson, 1980). These unique environments provide stable erosion free conditions that allow fossils to remain preserved for thousands, if not millions, of years (Corgan, 1996; Schubert et al., 2003). The fossil remains found in caves can help paleontologists document biogeographic and evolutionary patterns in a great variety of organisms (Schubert et al., 2003). Many fossils found in cave deposits only date to the Holocene (Schubert et al., 2003). These fossils localities are rarely studied by …

Doctoral Theses
At the beginning of 2003, I was searching for a suitable area to do my PhD. My respected guide Prof. Palash Sarkar assigned me to do a survey work on block cipher cryptanalysis. I found myself very interested in this area. I am very lucky that I joined into a golden group – Cryptology Research Group of India formed by our beloved teacher Prof. Bimal Roy and had the opportunity to work with Prof. Palash Sarkar, Dr. Subhomoy Maitra, Prof. Rana Barua and many others. I have been inspired by many persons during my PhD work.I would like to begin …
A Bayesian Hierarchical Model For Spot Fluorescence In Microarrays, Federico Mattia Stefanini
A Bayesian Hierarchical Model For Spot Fluorescence In Microarrays, Federico Mattia Stefanini
COBRA Preprint Series
Microarray experiments are characterized by the presence of many sources of experimental bias and a remarkably large technical variability. The assessment of differential expression for genes transcribed into a small number of mRNA copies heavily depends on the proper quantification of background fluorescence within spot. The rough model `observed = hybridization plus background' fluorescence is at first reformulated at spot level, then it is embedded into a Bayesian hierarchical model suited for fitting control spots. The novelties of the approach include the background correction performed on the latent mean of replicated spots, and an explicit model for outlying observations at …
False Discovery Rate Analysis Of Brain Diffusion Direction Maps, Armin Schwartzman, Robert F. Dougherty, Jonathan E. Taylor
False Discovery Rate Analysis Of Brain Diffusion Direction Maps, Armin Schwartzman, Robert F. Dougherty, Jonathan E. Taylor
COBRA Preprint Series
Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a novel modality of magnetic resonance imaging that allows non-invasive mapping of the brain’s white matter. A particular map derived from DTI measurements is a map of water principal diffusion directions, which are proxies for neural fiber directions. We consider an experiment in which diffusion direction maps were acquired for two groups of subjects. The objective of the analysis is to find regions of the brain in which the corresponding diffusion directions differ between the groups. This is attained by first computing a test statistic for the difference in direction at every brain location using …

Polymer Gels: Mimickin G Biological Environments, Joshua Carey
Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)
A comparison of the hydrolysis of pyruvic acid in polymer gels and in aqueous environment will be studied using NMR techniques. Relaxation time and diffusion rates will be determined and compared to show the mimicking capability of the polymer gels to that of biological environments. This will allow for a means in which chemical reactions can be performed in a medium that more closely resembles the rate that the reaction would occur in biological systems.

The occurrence and relative abundance of tissue (arm) regeneration in the ophiuroid, Ophiacantha bidentata (Retzius), was examined in individuals collected primarily among colonies of the deep-water coral Lophelia pertusa off the southeastern United States. Seven deep-water coral sites (384–756 m), located between Cape Lookout, NC, and Cape Canaveral, FL, were sampled in June 2004 using a manned submersible. The presence of regenerative tissue was evaluated by visual inspection of each individual ophiuroid, and the proportion of regenerating arms per individual was examined relative to size of individual, geographic location, and depth of collection. Ophiacantha bidentata, the dominant brittle star collected, …

We present results of a nonperturbative Floquet study of above-threshold detachment (ATD) of the H– and F– negative ions. Pronounced enhancements of ATD rates in the high-energy plateau region are found as the laser field intensity passes across ponderomotively shifted multiphoton thresholds. Depending on the symmetry of the initial state (s or p symmetry), the enhancement is found to be most pronounced for even- or odd-channel closures, which is consistent with threshold laws applicable at the closing of particular multiphoton channels. Variations of ATD photoelectron angular distributions as functions of laser intensity near multiphoton thresholds are also …
