Multi-Robot-Based Nanoassembly Planning With Automated Path Generation, Xiaobu Yuan, Simon X. Yang

Computer Science Publications

In this paper, a novel approach of automated multirobot nanoassembly planning is presented. This approach uses an improved self-organizing map to coordinate assembly tasks of nanorobots while generating optimized motion paths at run time with a modified shunting neural network. It is capable of synchronizing multiple nanorobots working simultaneously and efficiently on the assembly of swarms of objects in the presence of obstacles and environmental uncertainty. Operation of the presented approach is demonstrated with experiments at the end of the paper.

Topology Of Smectic Order On Compact Substrates, Xiangiun Xing Jan 2007

Topology Of Smectic Order On Compact Substrates, Xiangiun Xing

Physics - All Scholarship

Smectic orders on curved substrates can be described by differential forms of rank one (1-forms), whose geometric meaning is the differential of the local phase field of density modulation. The exterior derivative of 1-form is the local dislocation density. Elastic deformations are described by superposition of exact differential forms. Applying this formalism to study smectic order on torus as well as on sphere, we find that both systems exhibit many topologically distinct low energy states, that can be characterized by two integer topological charges. The total number of low energy states scales as the square root of the substrate area. …

Polyaniline On Crystalline Silicon Heterojunction Solar Cells, Weining Wang, Eric A. Schiff Jan 2007

Polyaniline On Crystalline Silicon Heterojunction Solar Cells, Weining Wang, Eric A. Schiff

Physics - All Scholarship

Organic/inorganic heterojunction solar cells were fabricated on the (100) face of n-type silicon crystals using acid-doped polyaniline PANI with widely varying conductivities. For films with conductivities below 10−1 S/cm, the open-circuit voltage VOC increases with increasing film conductivity as expected when VOC is limited by the work function of the film. Extrapolation of these results to the higher conductivity films indicates that PANI could support VOC of 0.7 V or larger. VOC measurements for the cells with higher conductivity PANI saturated at 0.51 V. We speculate that uncontrolled surface states at the PANI/Si interface are reducing these values.

The metal-organic molecule bis(4-cyano-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionato)copper(II) (Cu- (CNdpm)2) (C24H36N2O4Cu, Cu(II)) is a copper spin-1/2 system with a magnetic moment of 1.05 ± 0.04 μB/molecule, slightly smaller than the 1.215±0.02 μB/molecule for the larger size copper spin-½ system C36H48N4O4Cu∙C4H8O (bis(4-cyano-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionato)copper(II) 4,4’-bipyridylethene- THF). There is generally good agreement between photoemission from vapor-deposited thin films of the C24H36N2O4Cu on Cu(111) and Co(111) and model calculations. Although this molecule is expected to …

Quantifying Fire Behavior Versus Societal Benefits Of Southern California Shrublands And Grasslands, Christopher Dicus, Maurica A. Zimmerman Jan 2007

Quantifying Fire Behavior Versus Societal Benefits Of Southern California Shrublands And Grasslands, Christopher Dicus, Maurica A. Zimmerman

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

Urban sprawl in southern California perpetually threatens native shrublands and grasslands, which intrinsically provide both biophysical and socioeconomic benefits to society. However, these vegetation types are simultaneously prone to high-intensity wildfires that lead to enormous damage to human interests. After the southern California firestorms of October 2003, new regulations were adopted that increased the mandatory vegetation clearance around structures in order to reduce fire risk, which may significantly impact the positive benefits that grasslands and shrublands provide. To address this apparent conflict, we investigated the tradeoffs between societal benefits derived from major shrubland, grassland, and woodland vegetation types in southern …

Watershed Analysis Results For Mendocino Redwood Company Lands In Coastal Mendocino And Sonoma Counties, Christopher G. Surfleet

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

To assess the needs for conservation, restoration and condition of aquatic habitat within its land Mendocino Redwood Company (MRC) has been conducting watershed analysis. From watershed analysis completed to date, we estimate 73percent of the total sediment inputs over the last 30 to 40 years are road and skid trail associated. Of that percentage 30 percent is road and skid trail associated mass wasting, and 32 percent is road surface and point source erosion, the remaining 11percent is surface and point source erosion from skid trails. Hillslope mass wasting (not associated with roads or skid trails) represents 27 percent of …

The Q-Exponential Generating Function For Permutations By Consecutive Patterns And Inversions, Don Rawlings Jan 2007

The Q-Exponential Generating Function For Permutations By Consecutive Patterns And Inversions, Don Rawlings

Mathematics

The inverse of Fedou's insertion-shift bijection is used to deduce a general form for the q-exponential generating function for permutations by consecutive patterns (overlaps allowed) and inversion number from a result due to Jackson and Goulden for enumerating words by distinguished factors. Explicit q-exponential generating functions are then derived for permutations by the consecutive patterns 12…m, 12…(m−2)m(m−1), 1m(m−1)…2, and by the pair of consecutive patterns (123,132).

Closed Geodesics On Orbifolds Of Revolution, Joseph E. Borzellino, Christopher R. Jordan-Squire, Gregory C. Petrics, D. Mark Sullivan Jan 2007

Closed Geodesics On Orbifolds Of Revolution, Joseph E. Borzellino, Christopher R. Jordan-Squire, Gregory C. Petrics, D. Mark Sullivan

Mathematics

Using the theory of geodesics on surfaces of revolution, we show that any two-dimensional orbifold of revolution homeomorphic to S2 must contain an infinite number of geometrically distinct closed geodesics. Since any such orbifold of revolution can be regarded as a topological two-sphere with metric singularities, we will have extended Bangert's theorem on the existence of infinitely many closed geodesics on any smooth Riemannian two-sphere. In addition, we give an example of a two-sphere cone-manifold of revolution which possesses a single closed geodesic, thus showing that Bangert's result does not hold in the wider class of closed surfaces with …

Autonomous Control For A Differential Thrust Rov, Wei Wang, Christopher M. Clark Jan 2007

Autonomous Control For A Differential Thrust Rov, Wei Wang, Christopher M. Clark

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Smaller autonomous underwater vehicles that use differential thrust for surge and yaw motion control has the advantage of low cost and, at the same time, increased maneuverability in yaw direction. However, since such vehicles are underactuated vehicles, design of an autonomous control system that enables the vehicle to autonomously track a predefined trajectory is challenging. In this paper, we presented such an autonomous control system and implemented it on a small underactuated ROV with the use of unscented Kalman filter for vehicle localization, a underwater acoustic positioning system as the position sensor and a compass as the direction sensor. In …

Requirements Tracing On Target (Retro): Improving Software Maintenance Through Traceability Recovery, Jane Huffman Hayes, Alex Dekhtyar, Senthil Sundaram, E. Ashlee Holbrook, Sravanthi Vadlamudi, Alain April Jan 2007

Requirements Tracing On Target (Retro): Improving Software Maintenance Through Traceability Recovery, Jane Huffman Hayes, Alex Dekhtyar, Senthil Sundaram, E. Ashlee Holbrook, Sravanthi Vadlamudi, Alain April

Computer Science and Software Engineering

A number of important tasks in software maintenance require an up-to-date requirements traceability matrix (RTM): change impact analysis, determination of test cases to execute for regression testing, etc. The generation and maintenance of RTMs are tedious and error-prone, and they are hence often not done. In this paper, we present REquirements TRacing On-target (RETRO), a special- purpose requirements tracing tool. We discuss how RETRO automates the generation of RTMs and present the results of a study comparing manual RTM generation to RTM generation using RETRO. The study showed that RETRO found significantly more correct links than manual tracing and took …

Using Hybrid Approaches To Solve The Challenges Of Shape From Shading, Ryan Murphy, Zoë J. Wood Jan 2007

Using Hybrid Approaches To Solve The Challenges Of Shape From Shading, Ryan Murphy, Zoë J. Wood

Computer Science and Software Engineering

For over thirty years researchers have been trying to solve the shape from shading problem of determining 3D shape from a single image with a single light source. The basic problem of determining shape from shading is made more difficult due to challenges of light orientation, camera type, ambiguity, multiple materials, and specular highlights. This paper shows how some of these challenges can be overcome through the use of other techniques such as image segmentation and stereopsis. We present a new hybrid method of shape from shading that can be used to autonomously capture 3D information from two 2D images …

Enabling P2p Cooperative Wms Proxy Caching And Prefetching In An Educational Environment, Jeffrey A. Bergamini, Michael Haungs

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Given the great demand and promise for educational use of GIS, real time access to massive remote geospatial datasets for pedagogical purposes would be immensely useful to educators and students. However, such access has remained elusive. In other work, we have demonstrated that a P2P distributed system of client-side proxies can address the challenges posed by the interactive, multiplicative, and exploratory nature of classroom GIS, and we described this system at a high level. In this paper, we present the details of several novel techniques that enable P2P cooperative caching and prefetching of OGC WMS data in an educational lab …

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

In 2003, the Inland ENC Harmonization Group (IEHG) was formed to agree upon specifications for Inland ENCs that are suitable for all known Inland ENC data requirements for safe and efficient navigation in European and North American inland waterways and rivers. In 2004, the IEHG expanded to include Russian Federation. It is expected that South America will join IEHG in the near future. The overall framework for international Inland ENC standards includes: - Use IHO S-57 Edition 3.1 ‘maritime’ ENC Product Specification, where applicable. - A minimum Inland ENC Product Specification that includes mandatory requirements for safety-of-navigation on inland waterways, …

Sofya: Supporting Rapid Development Of Dynamic Program Analyses For Java, Alex Kinneer, Matthew B. Dwyer, Gregg Rothermel Jan 2007

Sofya: Supporting Rapid Development Of Dynamic Program Analyses For Java, Alex Kinneer, Matthew B. Dwyer, Gregg Rothermel

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

Dynamic analysis is an increasingly important means of supporting software validation and maintenance. To date, developers of dynamic analyses have used low-level instrumentation and debug interfaces to realize their analyses. Many dynamic analyses, however, share multiple common high-level requirements, e.g., capture of program data state as well as events, and efficient and accurate event capture in the presence of threading. We present SOFYA – an infra-structure designed to provide high-level, efficient, concurrency-aware support for building analyses that reason about rich observations of program data and events. It provides a layered, modular architecture, which has been successfully used to rapidly develop …

A Note On The Karp-Lipton Collapse For The Exponential Hierarchy, Chris Bourke

CSE Technical Reports

We extend previous collapsing results involving the exponential hierarchy by using recent hardness-randomness trade-off results. Specifically, we show that if the second level of the exponential hierarchy has polynomial-sized circuits, then it collapses all the way down to MA.

Spatial Clustering Using The Likelihood Function, April Kerby, David Marx, Ashok Samal, Viacheslav Adamchuk Jan 2007

Spatial Clustering Using The Likelihood Function, April Kerby, David Marx, Ashok Samal, Viacheslav Adamchuk

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

Clustering has been widely used as a tool to group multivariate observations that have similar characteristics. However, there have been few attempts at formulating a method to group similar multivariate observations while taking into account their spatial location. This paper proposes a method to spatially cluster similar observations based on their likelihoods. The geographic or spatial location of the observations can be incorporated into the likelihood of the multivariate normal distribution through the variance-covariance matrix. The variance-covariance matrix can be computed using any specific spatial covariance structure. Therefore, observations within a cluster which are spatially close to one another will …

Layered Clustering Communication Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks, Yong Wang, Byrav Ramamurthy Jan 2007

Layered Clustering Communication Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks, Yong Wang, Byrav Ramamurthy

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

In this paper, we propose a Layered Clustering Hierarchy (LCH) communication protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). The design of LCH has two goals: scalability and energy-efficiency. In LCH, the sensor nodes are organized as a layered clustering structure. Each layer runs a distributed clustering protocol. By randomizing the rotation of cluster heads in each layer, the energy load is distributed evenly across sensors in the network. Our simulations show that LCH is effective in densely deployed sensor networks. On average, 70% of live sensor nodes are involved directly in the clustering communication hierarchy. Moreover, the simulations also show that …

Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications

A screen for antifungal compounds from Lysobacter enzymogenes strain C3, a bacterial biological control agent of fungal diseases, has previously led to the isolation of heat-stable antifungal factor (HSAF). HSAF exhibits inhibitory activities against a wide range of fungal species and shows a novel mode of antifungal action by disrupting the biosynthesis of a distinct group of sphingolipids. We have now determined the chemical structure of HSAF, which is identical to that of dihydromaltophilin, an antifungal metabolite with a unique macrocyclic lactam system containing a tetramic acid moiety and a 5,5,6-tricyclic skeleton. We have also identified the genetic locus responsible …
