Securitycom: A Multi-Player Game For Researching And Teaching Information Security Teams, Douglas P. Twitchell

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

A major portion of government and business organizations’ attempts to counteract information security threats is teams of security personnel. These teams often consist of personnel of diverse backgrounds in specific specialties such as network administration, application development, and business administration, resulting in possible conflicts between security, functionality, and availability. This paper discusses the use of games to teach and research information security teams and outlines research to design and build a simple, team-oriented, configurable, information security game. It will be used to study how information security teams work together to defend against attacks using a multi-player game, and to study …

Education Organization Baseline Control Protection And Trusted Level Security, Wasim A. Al-Hamdani Jan 2007

Education Organization Baseline Control Protection And Trusted Level Security, Wasim A. Al-Hamdani

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Many education organizations have adopted for security the enterprise best practices for implementation on their campuses, while others focus on ISO Standard (or/and) the National Institution of Standards and Technology.

All these adoptions are dependent on IT personal and their experiences or knowledge of the standard. On top of this is the size of the education organizations. The larger the population in an education organization, the more the problem of information and security become very clear. Thus, they have been obliged to comply with information security issues and adopt the national or international standard. The case is quite different when …

Making Molehills Out Of Mountains: Bringing Security Research To The Classroom, Richard G. Taylor Jan 2007

Making Molehills Out Of Mountains: Bringing Security Research To The Classroom, Richard G. Taylor

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Security research published in academic journals rarely finds its way to the business community or into the classroom. Even though the research is of high quality, it is written in a manner that is difficult to read and to understand. This paper argues that one way to get this academic research into the business community is to incorporate it into security classrooms. To do so, however, academic articles need to be adapted into a classroom-friendly format. This paper suggests ways to do this and provides an example of an academic article that was adapted for use in a security management …

The Design And Implementation Of An Automated Security Compliance Toolkit: A Pedagogical Exercise, Guillermo Francia, Brian Estes, Rahjima Francia, Vu Nguyen, Alex Scroggins Jan 2007

The Design And Implementation Of An Automated Security Compliance Toolkit: A Pedagogical Exercise, Guillermo Francia, Brian Estes, Rahjima Francia, Vu Nguyen, Alex Scroggins

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The demand, through government regulations, for the preservation of the security, integrity, and privacy of corporate and customer information is increasing at an unprecedented pace. Government and private entities struggle to comply with these regulations through various means—both automated and manual controls. This paper presents an automated security compliance toolkit that is designed and developed using mostly open source tools to demonstrate that 1) meeting regulatory compliance does not need to be a very expensive proposition and 2) an undertaking of this magnitude could be served as a pedagogical exercise for students in the areas of collaboration, project management, software …

Polarization Reversal In Potassium Titanyl Phosphate, William D. Mitchell

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Polarization reversal in both hydrothermal and flux grown potassium titanyl phosphate was studied using square pulses at room temperature from 1600 V/mm to 5000 V/mm. Maximum switching current and inverse switching time data is compared to the ferroelectric polarization reversal model developed by Fatuzzo and Merz in the last century. Room temperature calculation of spontaneous polarization is reported and compared to that of potassium titanyl phosphate in the literature.

An Analog Evolvable Hardware Device For Active Control, Saranyan A. Vigraham

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The field of Evolvable Hardware (EH) has recently gained a lot of interest due to the novel methodology it offers for designing electrical circuits and machines. EH techniques involve configuring a reconfigurable hardware platform with the aid of learning engines such as evolutionary algorithms. The EH devices normally act as closed loop controllers with the capability of learning necessary control laws adaptively. Current EH practices have several shortcomings, which have restricted their use as reliable controllers. This dissertation will present an improved EH device based on behavioral reconfigurability that addresses the current open challenges in the field of analog Evolvable …

Xml Integrated Environment For Service-Oriented Data Management, Marwan Younes Maarouf Jan 2007

Xml Integrated Environment For Service-Oriented Data Management, Marwan Younes Maarouf

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The proliferation of XML as a family of related standards including a markup language (XML), formatting semantics (XSL style sheets), a linking syntax (XLINK), and appropriate data schema standards have emerged as a de facto standard for encoding and sharing data between various applications. XML is designed to be simple, easily parsed and self-describing. XML is based on and support the idea of separation of concerns: information content is separated from information rendering, and relationships between data elements are provided via simple nesting and references. As the XML content grows, the ability to handle schemaless XML documents becomes more critical …

The Electroanalytical Performance Of Sonogel Carbon Titanium (Iv) Oxide Electrodes Versus Conducting Polymer Electrodes In The Electrochemical Detection Of Biological Molecules, Jelynn A. Stinson Jan 2007

The Electroanalytical Performance Of Sonogel Carbon Titanium (Iv) Oxide Electrodes Versus Conducting Polymer Electrodes In The Electrochemical Detection Of Biological Molecules, Jelynn A. Stinson

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The electrochemical performance of a newly developed sonogel carbon titanium (IV) oxide (SGC/TiO2 ) electrode against poly(3-methylthiophene) (P3MT) and poly(2,2'-bithiophene) (PBTP) modified electrodes in the electrochemical detection of biological molecules is reported. The stability of the Titanium (IV) Oxide coating on the sonogel carbon electrode was shown to be greater than the P3MT coating on the conventional size glassy carbon electrode. After 10 consecutive scans, there was a 21% loss of the initial signal at the P3MT modified electrode and a 5% loss of the initial signal at the SGC/TiO2 electrode. The influence of NAD+ on NADH response was tested. …

Hydrophobically Modified Polyethyleneimines And Ethoxylated Polyethyleneimines, Michael Joseph Simons Jan 2007

Hydrophobically Modified Polyethyleneimines And Ethoxylated Polyethyleneimines, Michael Joseph Simons

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The modification of the commercially available polymers polyethyleneimines and ethoxylated polyethyleneimines took place with approximately a 3-10% alkylbromide modification followed by, in the case of the polyethyleneimines, a 2-hydroxypropyl modification, using propylene oxide, on the order of 65-70%. The objective was to increase the hydrophobicity of the polymer while keeping the cloud point above 60°C. Another approach taken was to form hydrophobic ethers from ethoxylated polyethyleneimine. We also added a 2-hydroxy ethyl group to a hexylated polyethyleneimine avoiding the use of ethylene oxide or drying EPI.

A Handle On What's Going On: Combining Tangible Interfaces And Ambient Displays For Collaborative Groups, Johanna Brewer, Amanda Williams, Paul Dourish

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

While tangible interfaces open up new possibilities for in- put and interaction, they are also interesting because of the ways in which they occupy the physical world just as we do. We have been working at the intersection of three research areas – tangible interfaces, ambient displays, and collaboration awareness. Our system, Nimio, uses engaging physical objects as both input devices (capturing aspects of individual activity) and output devices (expressing aspects of group activity). We present our design and experiences, focusing in particular on the tension between legibility and ambiguity and its relevance in collaborative settings.

Graded Sparse Graphs And Matroids, Audrey Lee, Ileana Streinu, Louis Theran Jan 2007

Graded Sparse Graphs And Matroids, Audrey Lee, Ileana Streinu, Louis Theran

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Sparse graphs and their associated matroids play an important role in rigidity theory, where they capture the combinatorics of some families of generic minimally rigid structures. We define a new family called graded sparse graphs, arising from generically pinned bar-and-joint frameworks, and prove that they also form matroids. We also address several algorithmic problems on graded sparse graphs: Decision, Spanning, Extraction, Components, Optimization, and Extension. We sketch variations on pebble game algorithms to solve them.

Impact Of Anthropogenic Combustion Emissions On The Fractional Solubility Of Aeroosol Iron: Evidence From The Sargasso Sea, Peter N. Sedwick, Edward R. Sholkovitz, Thomas M. Church Jan 2007

Impact Of Anthropogenic Combustion Emissions On The Fractional Solubility Of Aeroosol Iron: Evidence From The Sargasso Sea, Peter N. Sedwick, Edward R. Sholkovitz, Thomas M. Church

OES Faculty Publications

We report empirical estimates of the fractional solubility of aerosol iron over the Sargasso Sea during periods characterized by high concentrations of Saharan dust (summer 2003) and by low concentrations of aerosols in North American/maritime North Atlantic air masses (spring 2004 and early summer 2004). We observed a strong inverse relationship between the operational solubility of aerosol iron (defined using a flow-through deionized-water leaching protocol) and the total concentration of aerosol iron, whereby the operational solubility of aerosol iron was elevated when total aerosol iron loadings were low. This relationship is consistent with source-dependent differences in the solubility characteristics of …

Aspen Indicator Species In Lichen Communities In The Bear River Range Of Idaho And Utah, Paul C. Rogers, Roger Rosentreter, Ronald J. Ryel Jan 2007

Aspen Indicator Species In Lichen Communities In The Bear River Range Of Idaho And Utah, Paul C. Rogers, Roger Rosentreter, Ronald J. Ryel

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Aspen are thought to be declining in this region due to a combination of fire suppression, grazing and wildlife management practices, and potentially cool/wet climates of the past century which favor advancing conifer succession. Many scientists are concerned that aspen’s related species may also be losing habitat, thereby threatening the long-term local and regional viability of this important community. To date, few studies have specifically examined the role of aspen’s epiphytic lichen community. This paper presents basic community research describing the application of Indicator Species Analysis for lichens growing on aspen stems in the central Rocky Mountains of North American. …
