The Shape Of Pulverized Bituminous Vitrinite Coal Particles, Jonathan P. Mathews, Patrick G. Hatcher, Alan W. Scaroni Jan 2007

The Shape Of Pulverized Bituminous Vitrinite Coal Particles, Jonathan P. Mathews, Patrick G. Hatcher, Alan W. Scaroni

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The shape of pulverized bituminous coal particles (vitrinites) was determined by optical and laser light scattering. Vitrain samples were collected from obvious tree remains located in the ceilings of two Appalachian coal mines. Wet sieving produced narrow size cuts. The particles were determined to be oblong or blocky in shape, with average length-to-width ratio of 1.7 and sphericity of 0.78. They were analogous in shape to a square ended, rectangular "house brick". The two bituminous coals and different size cuts of each coal had essentially the same shape parameters. Characteristic heating times and terminal velocities were higher by 22 and …

The Application Of Electrospray Ionization Coupled To Ultrahigh Resolution Mass Spectrometry For The Molecular Characterization Of Natural Organic Matter, Rachel L. Sleighter, Patrick G. Hatcher Jan 2007

The Application Of Electrospray Ionization Coupled To Ultrahigh Resolution Mass Spectrometry For The Molecular Characterization Of Natural Organic Matter, Rachel L. Sleighter, Patrick G. Hatcher

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Mass spectrometry has recently played a key role in the understanding of natural organic matter (NOM) by providing molecular-level details about its composition. NOM, a complex assemblage of organic molecules present in natural waters and soils/sediments, has the ability to bind and transport anthropogenic materials. An improved understanding of its composition is crucial in order to understand how pollutants interact with NOM and how NOM cycles through global carbon cycles. In the past, low-resolution (> 3000) mass analyzers have offered some insights into the structure of NOM, but emerging ultrahigh resolution (> 200000) techniques such as electrospray ionization (ESI) coupled …

A Novel Tio2 / Pvc Layer For Use In A Photoelectrochemical Cell, Faiza Touati, John Cassidy, Kevin Mcguigan

Articles

A novel method of coating titanium dioxide on a glassy carbon electrode as a polyvinylchloride composite , is described. On illumination , there is an enhanced voltammetric current at this TiO2/PVC composite in aqueous formic acid solution. This electrode is used as the basis of a formic acid fuel cell where oxygen is reduced at a platinum cathode. The system yields 100 cm-2 for 0.01 mol dm-3 HCOOH in 0.1 mol dm-3 NaOH under illumination from a 150 W xenon lamp. The current without illumination is 0.5 cm-2.

Improved Nitrate Sensing Using Ion Selective Electrodes Based On Urea–Calixarene Ionophores, Benjamin Schazmann, Dermot Diamond Jan 2007

Improved Nitrate Sensing Using Ion Selective Electrodes Based On Urea–Calixarene Ionophores, Benjamin Schazmann, Dermot Diamond

Articles

Urea–calix[4]arenes 1 and 2 were synthesised and incorporated into ISE membranes for assessment as sensors for inorganic anions in water. 1 revealed a strong response to all anions following the Hofmeister selectivity order. For ISEs of 2, the response to a portion of the anion series was suppressed, increasing the margin of selectivity of nitrate over chloride, a common interferant of nitrate in fresh and marine water samples. The performance of ISEs containing 2 was compared to commercially available alkylammonium nitrate ion-exchange salts used for nitrate sensing. Our ISEs performed favourably in terms of sensitivity, linear range and LOD performing …

Modelling A Deposition Process In Collective Construction, Robert L. Stewart, R. Andrew Russell, Lindsay Kleeman Jan 2007

Modelling A Deposition Process In Collective Construction, Robert L. Stewart, R. Andrew Russell, Lindsay Kleeman

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

During collective construction tasks, swarm robots coordinate their actions in space and time to build structures that conform to some given design or specification. In this paper, a simulation model and a mathematical model (based on a Markov chain) are introduced to describe the deposition process of a previously detailed robotic swarm system that uses templates and feedback to facilitate construction. The models are based on the behaviour and geometry of real robots and predict the dynamics observed during practical trials as well as explaining the occurrence of different spatial patterns of building blocks. Furthermore, the models provide an insight …

Sea Coast And Sea Level Trends, John D. Boon Jan 2007

Sea Coast And Sea Level Trends, John D. Boon

Reports

Coastal residents know that the sea is never still. We witness the daily rise and fall of the tide against our shores, covering and uncovering the intertidal zone. We watch the water’s edge rise higher still during a ‘northeaster’ as storm surge adds to the tide. These events occur and reoccur in cycles and each time a degree of normalcy returns before a new cycle begins. What we don’t see with our own eyes is the slow change in water level that keeps on going – a very long cycle or sea level trend.

Elizabeth River Tributyltin Monitoring Program 1999-2006 : A Report To The Virginia Department Of Environmental Quality Tidewater Regional Office, Michael A. Unger

Reports

The purpose of this project was to implement a study in 1999/2000 that would document the current levels of tributyltin (TBT) in the Elizabeth River and provide baseline data for future efforts to determine the trend of TBT concentrations found in the Elizabeth River Watershed. Subsequent years of sampling have documented spatial and temporal trends in TBT and are described in this report.

Far-Infrared/Millimeter Wave Source And Component Development For Imaging And Spectroscopy, Todd Du Bosq Jan 2007

Far-Infrared/Millimeter Wave Source And Component Development For Imaging And Spectroscopy, Todd Du Bosq

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The far-infrared and millimeter wave (FIR/mmW) (wavelength 75 micrometer to 10 mm) portion of the electromagnetic spectrum is fairly underdeveloped technologically, owing to the large amount of atmospheric attenuation in that range. At present, the FIR/mmW region is lacking in compact, high-brightness radiation sources and practical imaging systems. This dissertation focuses on development of two complementary technologies in this area - an active mmW imaging system and high-reflectivity Bragg mirrors for the FIR p-Ge laser. The imaging system uses a vector network analyzer in the frequency range of 90-140 GHz as the radiation source and receiver. Raster scanning is used …

Impulse Formulations Of The Euler Equations For Incompressible And Compressible Fluids, Victor David Pareja Jan 2007

Impulse Formulations Of The Euler Equations For Incompressible And Compressible Fluids, Victor David Pareja

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this paper is to consider the impulse formulations of the Euler equations for incompressible and compressible fluids. Different gauges are considered. In particular, the Kuz'min gauge provides an interesting case as it allows the fluid impulse velocity to describe the evolution of material surface elements. This result affords interesting physical interpretations of the Kuz'min invariant. Some exact solutions in the impulse formulation are studied. Finally, generalizations to compressible fluids are considered as an extension of these results. The arrangement of the paper is as follows: in the first chapter we will give a brief explanation on the …

Gold(Iii) Complex Of Caffeine: Synthesis, Isolation And Spectroscopic Characterization, Bojidarka Ivanova Jan 2007

Gold(Iii) Complex Of Caffeine: Synthesis, Isolation And Spectroscopic Characterization, Bojidarka Ivanova

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Au(III)-caffeine complex was synthesized and characterized by means of solid-state linear-dichroic infrared spectral analysis (IRLD), ^1H-NMR, MS, DSC and TGA methods. The caffeine (I) is monodentate and coordinated with metal ion through its N9 atom at molar ratio metal to ligand 1:1. The other 3 positions in the Au(III) coordination sphere are occupied by Cl^-, thus forming [Au^{3+}(C_8H_{10}N_4O_2)Cl_3] complex. IR-characteristic band assignment in the 4000-400 cm^{-1} IR region of pure ligand and corresponding Au(III)complex was performed.

Electrochemical Characteristics Of A 7-Ferrocenyl(Carbonyloxy)-1- Heptanethiol-Modified Gold Electrode, Mohammed Muzibur Rahman, Il Cheol Jeon Jan 2007

Electrochemical Characteristics Of A 7-Ferrocenyl(Carbonyloxy)-1- Heptanethiol-Modified Gold Electrode, Mohammed Muzibur Rahman, Il Cheol Jeon

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The electrochemical properties of 7-ferrocenyl(carbonyloxy)-1-heptanethiol [FcCO_2(CH_2)_7SH] were characterized by an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM). A gold surface was modified with FcCO_2(CH_2)_7SH by the self-assembly method. EQCM was used to investigate mass change during the redox reactions of FcCO_2(CH_2)_7SH monolayers on a modified gold electrode in solution containing K_3Fe(CN)_6 redox species. The FcCO_2(CH_2)_7SH monolayer on gold acts as a mediator for the electron transfer between a gold electrode and electroactive species Fe(CN)_6^{3-/4-} in solution. In both cases, electrochemical current responses were complicated because the observed currents were due to the redox of both the ferrocenyl group immobilized on gold and …

Preparation And Characterization Of An Atenolol Selective Electrode Based On A Pvc Matrix Membrane, Nabil S. Nassory, Shabaz A. Maki, Mutaz A. Ali

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Atenolol selective electrodes were prepared based on a complex atenolol-phosphotungstate as an active material using the plasticizers di-butyl phosphate (DBP), tri-butyl phosphate (TBP), o-nitro phenyl octyl ether (NPOE) and di-octyl phthalate (DOPH) in a PVC matrix membrane. The properties of the prepared electrodes were studied, namely slope, concentration range, detection limit, lifetime, pH effect and selectivity. The experimental results showed that the best electrode was based on DOPH as plasticizer, displaying a linear range from 1.00 x 10^{-4} M to 5.00 x 10^{-2} M with a Nernstian slope of 55.91 mV/decade and correlation coefficient of 0.9995. The detection limit was …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Carbonate-hosted Pb-Zn deposits are common in the Yahyalı region (Taurus Belt) with galena the most abundant sulfide mineral. The mean d34S values for Göynük, Celaldağı Desandre, Demircilik, Tekke, Havadan and Suçatı deposits were +0.2±0.5, +9.3±0.8, +10.7±1.3, +10.8±1.3, +11.5±2.4, -4.2±0.4%o, respectively. The mean 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb measurements for the studied deposits were 18.968±0.005, 15.741±0.005 and 39.074±0.016 for Göynük, 18.702±0.006, 15.715±0.006 and 38.883±0.021 for Celaldağı Desandre, 18.618±0.020, 15.727±0.008 and 38.852±0.032 for Demircilik, 18.808±0.017, 15.751±0.028 and 38.983±0.166 for Suçatı. The sulfur isotope systematics imply that sulfur originated from a mixture of different sources for the Göynük and Suçatı deposits, but was probably …

Studies On The Preparation Of \Alpha,\Omega -Telechelic Polymers By The Combination Of Reverse Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization And Atom Transfer Radical Coupling Processes, Bi̇nnur Aydoğan, Yusuf Yağci Jan 2007

Studies On The Preparation Of \Alpha,\Omega -Telechelic Polymers By The Combination Of Reverse Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization And Atom Transfer Radical Coupling Processes, Bi̇nnur Aydoğan, Yusuf Yağci

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Monofunctional polystyrenes with cyano, carboxylic acid, and hydroxyl terminal groups were synthesized by reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (RATRP) using corresponding azo initiators in conjunction with copper and iron complexes. These functional polymers were further used in the atom transfer radical coupling (ATRC) reaction in the presence of Cu(I) and Cu(0) in order to obtain telechelic polystyrenes. In the iron-mediated system, while RATRP experiments gave satisfactory results, the corresponding ATRC process yielded polymers with low functionality. The copper-mediated system, however, gave contrary results. In the RATRP step, initiation efficiency was rather low and polymers with relatively higher polydispersity were obtained. …

Effects Of Compaction Parameters On Heavy Metal Mass Transport In Ankara Clay Liner: Experimental Approach, M. Zeki̇ Çamur, Füsun Canpolat, Hasan Yazicigi̇l

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Mass transports of Cl, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn ions through the Ankara clay liner was prepared under two different compaction conditions, and were studied experimentally on the bases of sorption and hydrodynamic dispersion processes. According to geotechnical tests, the Ankara clay material is highly plastic, inorganic clay having a liquid limit of 73, a plastic limit of 29 and a plasticity index of 44. Optimum compaction of the material requires 32% water content and 1.413 g/cm^3 dry density. Two materials, prepared using half of the optimum water content but optimum energy conditions (I) and …

Statistical Models For Hot Electron Degradation In Nano-Scaled Mosfet Devices, Suk Joo Bae, Seong-Joon Kim, Way Kuo, Paul H. Kvam Jan 2007

Statistical Models For Hot Electron Degradation In Nano-Scaled Mosfet Devices, Suk Joo Bae, Seong-Joon Kim, Way Kuo, Paul H. Kvam

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

In a MOS structure, the generation of hot carrier interface states is a critical feature of the item's reliability. On the nano-scale, there are problems with degradation in transconductance, shift in threshold voltage, and decrease in drain current capability. Quantum mechanics has been used to relate this decrease to degradation, and device failure. Although the lifetime, and degradation of a device are typically used to characterize its reliability, in this paper we model the distribution of hot-electron activation energies, which has appeal because it exhibits a two-point discrete mixture of logistic distributions. The logistic mixture presents computational problems that are …

Centers And Shore Points In Λ-Dendroids, Van C. Nall Jan 2007

Centers And Shore Points In Λ-Dendroids, Van C. Nall

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

A dendroid is the disjoint union of the set of centers and the set of shore points. We show this is also true for λ-dendroids and use this fact to show that the finite union of shore continua in a λ-dendroid is a shore set.

An Observation About Frostman Shifts, William T. Ross, Alec L. Matheson Jan 2007

An Observation About Frostman Shifts, William T. Ross, Alec L. Matheson

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

A classical theorem of Frostman says that if B is a Blaschke product (or any inner function), then its Frostman shifts Bw = (B w)(1 w¯B)1 are Blaschke products for all |w| < 1 except possibly for w in a set of logarithmic capacity zero. If B is a Frostman Blaschke product, equivalently an inner multiplier for the space of Cauchy transforms of measures on the unit circle, we show that for all |w| < 1, Bw is indeed another Frostman Blaschke product.

Assessment And Analysis Of Quikscat And Coamps Model Vector Wind Products For The Gulf Of Mexico: A Long-Term And Hurricane Perspective, Neha Sharma Jan 2007

Assessment And Analysis Of Quikscat And Coamps Model Vector Wind Products For The Gulf Of Mexico: A Long-Term And Hurricane Perspective, Neha Sharma

LSU Master's Theses

Global weather changes have become a matter of grave concern in hurricane prone areas as intensities of hurricanes are observed to be increasing every year, necessitating improved monitoring capabilities. NASA’s QuikSCAT satellite sensor has provided significant support in analyzing and forecasting winds for the past 8 years. In this study, the performance of QuikSCAT products, including JPL’s latest L2B 12.5km swath winds, was evaluated against buoy-measured winds in the Gulf of Mexico. The long-term study period was 1/2005 – 2/2007. The Coupled Ocean/Atmospheric Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS) was also assessed. The regression analyses showed very good results for QuikSCAT products, …

Acadian Biospeleology: Composition And Ecology Of Cave Fauna Of Nova Scotia And Southern New Brunswick, Canada, Max Moseley Jan 2007

Acadian Biospeleology: Composition And Ecology Of Cave Fauna Of Nova Scotia And Southern New Brunswick, Canada, Max Moseley

International Journal of Speleology

The vertebrate and invertebrate fauna, environment and habitats of caves and disused mines in Nova Scotia and southern New Brunswick are provisionally catalogued and described, based on field collections made over many years. The area was glaciated and the subterranean fauna consists of non-troglobites all of which have arrived and colonised the caves during or following final recession of the Pleistocene glaciers. The statistical composition of the fauna at the higher taxonomic level is similar to that in Ontario, but is less species rich and there are some notable ecological and other differences. Porcupine dung accumulations are an important habitat …

Sails: A New Gypsum Speleothem From Naica, Chihuahua, Mexico, Tullio Bernabei, Paolo Forti, Roberto Villasuso Jan 2007

Sails: A New Gypsum Speleothem From Naica, Chihuahua, Mexico, Tullio Bernabei, Paolo Forti, Roberto Villasuso

International Journal of Speleology

The caves of Naica (Chihuahua, Mexico) are perhaps the most famous mine caves of the world due to the presence of gigantic gypsum crystals. Nevertheless, very little research has been carried out on this karst area until now. A multidisciplinary investigation started in 2006 with the aim not only to define the genesis and the age of the Naica gypsum crystals, but also on other scientific aspects of these caves. This paper describes a completely new type of gypsum speleothem: the “sails”, observed only inside the Cueva de las Velas, one of the caves of the Naica system. This speleothem …

Bomb-Spike Dating Of A Mummified Baboon In Ludwig Cave, Namibia, Greg Hodgins, George A. Brook, Eugene Marais Jan 2007

Bomb-Spike Dating Of A Mummified Baboon In Ludwig Cave, Namibia, Greg Hodgins, George A. Brook, Eugene Marais

International Journal of Speleology

In 1982 a mummified adult female baboon was discovered on a ledge in Ludwig Cave in Namibia. A toe bone was removed for dating in July 1995. AMS radiocarbon dating of bone collagen, tendon, and skin indicates a post-modern age. Application of the atomic bomb-spike calibration curve suggests death in late 1977 and an age at death of around 19 years. Baboons roost in the cave and the mummified female, along with a mummified juvenile male discovered in 2002 and three rotting corpses discovered in 1995, were probably chased by other baboons or by leopards down a ca. 6 m …

Seasonal Variations Of Co2 And 222Rn In A Mediterranean Sinkhole - Spring (Causse D’Aumelas, Se France), Christelle Batiot-Guilhe, Jean-Luc Seidel, Hervé Jourde, Olivier Hébrard, Vincent Bailly-Comte Jan 2007

Seasonal Variations Of Co2 And 222Rn In A Mediterranean Sinkhole - Spring (Causse D’Aumelas, Se France), Christelle Batiot-Guilhe, Jean-Luc Seidel, Hervé Jourde, Olivier Hébrard, Vincent Bailly-Comte

International Journal of Speleology

Carbon dioxide and 222Rn monitoring of the atmosphere of a Mediterranean sink hole - spring (SE France) during two hydrological cycles (from September 2004 to September 2006) showed seasonal variations with very high concentrations during summer (greater than 6% and 20 000 Bq/m3, respectively). Gas dynamics in caves often show seasonal variations. Meteorological parameters (barometric pressure and temperature mainly), cave geometry and fracture networks control exchanges between the cavity and outside atmosphere. Carbon dioxide and 222Rn may have different sources (atmosphere, soil, bedrock, deep gas diffusion, in situ oxidation of organic matter and, in some caves, …

The Polygenetic Caves Of Cuatro Ciénegas (Coahuila, Mexico): Morphology And Speleogenesis, Leonardo Piccini, Paolo Forti, Italo Giulivo, Marco Mecchia Jan 2007

The Polygenetic Caves Of Cuatro Ciénegas (Coahuila, Mexico): Morphology And Speleogenesis, Leonardo Piccini, Paolo Forti, Italo Giulivo, Marco Mecchia

International Journal of Speleology

The Cuatro Ciénegas area is renown worldwide for its thermal springs, which feed a unique ecosystem consisting of many pools, lakes and marshes. The pools also represent a very important water resource in a region characterized by scarce rainfalls. Field investigation has emphasized the role of karst in the hydrogeology of the area. Only few and restricted forms of surface karst are represented; caves are mainly relics of old speleogenetic phases of thermal and bathyphreatic water flow.
