Asymptotic Solitons On A Non-Zero Mean Level., Tim Marchant
Asymptotic Solitons On A Non-Zero Mean Level., Tim Marchant
Tim Marchant
The collision of solitary waves for a higher-order modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation is examined. In particular, the collision between solitary waves with sech-type and algebraic (which only exist on a non-zero mean level) profiles is considered. An asymptotic transformation, valid if the higher-order coefficients satisfy a certain algebraic relationship, is used to transform the higher-order mKdV equation to an integrable member of the mKdV hierarchy. The transformation is used to show that the higher-order collision is asymptotically elastic and to derive the higher-order phase shifts. Numerical simulations of both elastic and inelastic collisions are performed. For the example covered …

A succinct data structure occupies an amount of space that is close to the information-theoretic minimum plus an additional term. The latter is not necessarily a lower-order term and, in several cases, completely dominates the space occupancy both in theory and in practice. In this paper, we present several solutions to partially overcome this problem, introducing new techniques of independent interest that allow us to improve over previously known upper and lower bounds.
Numerical Simulation Of Contaminant Flow In A Wool Scour Bowl., Tim Marchant
Numerical Simulation Of Contaminant Flow In A Wool Scour Bowl., Tim Marchant
Tim Marchant
Wool scouring is the process of washing dirty wool after shearing. Our model numerically simulates contaminant movement in a wool scour bowl using the advection–dispersion equation. This is the first wool scour model to give time-dependent results and to model the transport of contaminants within a single scour bowl. Our aim is to gain a better understanding of the operating parameters that will produce efficient scouring. Investigating the effects of varying the parameters reveals simple, interesting relationships that give insight into the dynamics of a scour bowl.

Software To Forecast The Global Burden Of Alzheimer's Disease, Ron Brookmeyer, Elizabeth Johnson, Kathryn Ziegler-Graham, H. Michael Arrighi
Ron Brookmeyer
Software was developed to forecast the global burden of Alzheimer’s disease and evaluate the potential impact of interventions that delay disease onset and progression. The output includes 50 year projections of Alzheimer's disease prevalence by stage of disease and region of the world. The methods are based on a stochastic multi-state model The software incorporates U.N. worldwide population forecasts and data from epidemiological studies on risks of Alzheimer’s disease. The user can also supply their own population projections, and modify input parameters for the model including the disease incidence rates, effects of interventions on disease onset and progression, and stages …

Confidence Intervals For Biomarker-Based Human Immunodeficiecny Virus Incidence Estimates And Differences Using Prevalent Data, Ron Brookmeyer, S Cole, H Chu
Confidence Intervals For Biomarker-Based Human Immunodeficiecny Virus Incidence Estimates And Differences Using Prevalent Data, Ron Brookmeyer, S Cole, H Chu
Ron Brookmeyer
Prevalent biological specimens can be used to estimate human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) incidence using a two-stage immunologic testing algorithm that hinges on the average time, say T, between testing HIV positive on highly and less sensitive enzyme immunoassays. Common approaches to confidence interval (CI) estimation for this incidence measure have included (1) ignoring the random error in T or (2) employing a Bonferroni adjustment to the box method. The authors present alternative Monte Carlo-based CIs for this incidence measure, as well as CIs for the biomarker-based incidence difference; standard approaches to CIs are typically appropriate for the incidence ratio. Using …
Stabilizing And Then Reducing U.S. Energy Consumption: Legal And Policy Tools For Efficiency And Conservation, John Dernbach
Stabilizing And Then Reducing U.S. Energy Consumption: Legal And Policy Tools For Efficiency And Conservation, John Dernbach
John C. Dernbach
Rising global demand for energy, high energy prices, climate change, and the threat of terrorism all point to the need for greater energy efficiency and conservation in the United States. While technological innovation is plainly needed, our laws and institutional arrangements must also play an important role. The United States has scores of legal and policy tools from which to choose to improve energy efficiency and curb energy consumption. This article evaluates a handful of these tools: transit-oriented development; fuel taxation; real-time pricing for electricity use; public benefit funds; improved efficiency in existing residential and commercial buildings; and expanded use …

Community Domain Name Policy Development, Alison Norris, Mark Freeman
Dr Mark Freeman
In August 2006, auDA launched a new domain name space designed specifically for community groups to develop community websites for the benefit of the local community. This paper presents an overview of the scheme, and identifies the changes made to the governing policies since they were initially proposed. A comparison of the proposed and implemented policies is presented, and the potential effects of these changes on a ‘world first’ community website scheme are considered. The changes made by the administrators to the scheme were in the following areas: local focus; sale of geographic .com.au and .net.au domains; management and licensing; …
The Amplitude Equation For Rotating Rayleigh–Bénard Convection, Janet Scheel
The Amplitude Equation For Rotating Rayleigh–Bénard Convection, Janet Scheel
Janet D. Scheel
The amplitude equation for rotating Rayleigh–Bénard convection is derived from the Boussinesq equations with the Coriolis force included. The vertical boundary conditions are no-slip, and the lateral boundary conditions are either periodic or rigid. In order to keep track of the mean flow, the full system of equations is considered, instead of a potential formulation. A multiple scales perturbation expansion in the control parameter ϵ is performed, and appropriate solvability conditions are imposed. This leads to the usual amplitude equation at order ϵ3/2, but a new rotation term enters at order ϵ7/4. This rotation term will cause a change of …

Angular Dependent Magnetorestriction Study Of Cecoin5, Catalin Martin, Victor Correa, Kenneth Purcell, Timothy Timothy, Eric Palm, Stanley Tozer, George Schmiedeshoff, J Cooley
George Schmiedeshoff
Using a capacitive dilatometer designed to operate on the rotating stage of a top loading dilution refrigerator probe, we measured the magnetorestriction ( L(H)-L(0))/L(0), of the Heavy Fermion Superconductor CeCoIn5, along all three crystallographic direction, and with the magnetic field applied parallel both to the superconducting ab-planes and to the c-axis. When B||ab, the c-axis magnetorestriction features, besides a sharp jump at the upper critical field, a continuous, second-order like, transition at a lower field, which is consistent with previous observations from specific heat measurements. Our results are consistent with a field induced modulation of the superconducting order parameter (FFLO …

Symbolization Of Generating Functions; An Application Of The Mullin–Rota Theory Of Binomial Enumeration, Tian-Xiao He, Peter J.S. S, Leetsch C. Hsu
Tian-Xiao He
We have found that there are more than a dozen classical generating functions that could be suitably symbolized to yield various symbolic sum formulas by employing the Mullin–Rota theory of binomial enumeration. Various special formulas and identities involving well-known number sequences or polynomial sequences are presented as illustrative examples. The convergence of the symbolic summations is discussed.

The emerging paradigm of Web services opens a new way of engineering enterprise Web applications via rapidly developing and deploying Web applications, by composing independently published Web service components to conduct new business transactions. However, how to formally validate and reason about the properties of an enterprise system composed of Web service components remains a challenge. This chapter introduces an advanced topic of enterprise service computing – formal verification and validation of enterprise Web services. The authors introduce a Web Services Net (WS-Net), which is an executable architectural description language incorporating the semantics of Colored Petri Nets with the style …

Barbara John
We present newly acquired trace element compositions for more than 300 zircon grains in 36 gabbros formed at the slow-spreading Mid-Atlantic and Southwest Indian Ridges. Rare earth element patterns for zircon from modern oceanic crust completely overlap with those for zircon crystallized in continental granitoids. However, plots of U versus Yb and U/Yb versus Hf or Y discriminate zircons crystallized in oceanic crust from continental zircon, and provide a relatively robust method for distinguishing zircons from these environments. Approximately 80% of the modern ocean crust zircons are distinct from the fi eld defi ned by more than 1700 continental zircons …
Significant Suppression Of Ferromagnetism By Hydrostatic Pressure In The Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor Sb2-Xvxte3 With X <~ 0.03, Jeffrey Dyck, T J. Mitchell, A J. Luciana, P C. Quayle, C DrašAr, P LošŤÁK
Significant Suppression Of Ferromagnetism By Hydrostatic Pressure In The Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor Sb2-Xvxte3 With X <~ 0.03, Jeffrey Dyck, T J. Mitchell, A J. Luciana, P C. Quayle, C DrašAr, P LošŤÁK
Jeffrey Dyck
The authors report on the hydrostatic pressure dependence of the magnetotransport properties of ferromagnetic Sb2-xVxTe3 single crystals with x=0.02—0.03. Pressure significantly increases the free hole concentration in these compounds. In turn, the Curie temperature is suppressed by roughly 40%, which goes against many models that would predict an increase in Curie temperature with increasing carrier concentration. These results indicate that the ferromagnetism in these materials is carrier mediated and that a full Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida model that takes into account the oscillatory nature of the indirect exchange interaction among localized spins is needed in order to explain the data.

Community-Based Link Prediction With Text, David Mimno, Hanna M. Wallach, Andrew Mccallum
Hanna M. Wallach
There has been much recent interest in generative models for graphs. The intuition behind the study of such link prediction functions is that they provide a succinct description of the process by which networks grow and evolve: a model that accurately predicts small-scale actions such as coauthorships should help us understand the global properties of the network. Previous work in social network analysis, such as Liben-Nowell and Kleinberg [5], has often focused on generative models that take into account only the graph structure of the network, without making any use of the individual properties of the nodes themselves. Frequently, however, …

Fourier Transform Of Bernstein–Bézier Polynomials, Tian-Xiao He, Charles K. Chui, Qingtang Jiang
Tian-Xiao He
Explicit formulae, in terms of Bernstein–Bézier coefficients, of the Fourier transform of bivariate polynomials on a triangle and univariate polynomials on an interval are derived in this paper. Examples are given and discussed to illustrate the general theory. Finally, this consideration is related to the study of refinement masks of spline function vectors.
