Comparison Of The Focal Properties Of Selected Magnetic And Electrostatic Lenses And Tests Of Their Theoretical Models, Luis Thomas Almarez
Comparison Of The Focal Properties Of Selected Magnetic And Electrostatic Lenses And Tests Of Their Theoretical Models, Luis Thomas Almarez
Dissertations and Theses
The main goal of the present research is to determine whether there is a significant difference between the aberrations of magnetic and electrostatic electron lenses when they are used in the same way. Comparison of the lenses was done in an electron-optical bench, set up to resemble a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Five different lenses, two magnetic and three electrostatic, were compared. Each group included two lenses with different lens-field lengths (pole-face spacing in magnetic lenses and interior length in electrostatic lenses). The lenses were used in turn to focus the electron beam into a demagnified image, or probe. The …

Definitive X-ray crystallographic evidence is obtained for a single hole (or a polaron) to be uniformly distributed on the three equivalent 1,2-dimethoxybenzenoid (or veratrole) rings in the hexamethoxytriptycene cation radical. This conclusion is further supported by electrochemical analysis and by the observation of an intense near-IR transition in its electronic spectrum, as well as by comparison of the spectral and electrochemical characteristics with the model compounds containing one and two dimethoxybenzene rings.

Automated Tracking Of Dividing Nuclei In Microscopy Videos Of Living Cells, Evan L. Tice
Automated Tracking Of Dividing Nuclei In Microscopy Videos Of Living Cells, Evan L. Tice
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
Many cell biologists perform analysis of multinucleated cell data in order to better under- stand the mechanisms that regulate cell division. Sbalzarini, et al., have developed methods for automatically tracking nuclei in cell data in order to aid in this time-consuming analysis. In this paper, we present an implementation of the Sbalzarini tracking algorithm, introduce a new algorithm we developed which is able to identify mitosis events, and present other software tools we have developed to aid in the automated detection of nucleus data.

Developing An Improved, Web-Based Classroom Response System With Web Services, Oleg B. Seletsky
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
Classroom Response Systems (CRS) are an in-class technology used to poll students and instantly display an aggregate representation of their responses. CRS have been around since the 1970s and have become increasingly more popular in higher education lecture halls. Even though technology, specifically computers and communications, has improved significantly since the 1970s, CRS have remained surprisingly unchanged. The purpose of this project was to develop an innovative web-based CRS using web services. The web-based aspect utilizes Dartmouth's wireless campus while the web services back-end makes the product more extensible. Lastly, we added a set of out-of-class learning tools for students …

Western Water Law, Policy and Management: Ripples, Currents, and New Channels for Inquiry (Martz Summer Conference, June 3-5)
In many pockets of the American West, stresses and demands on water resources are overwhelming our capacity to effectively manage change and accommodate the diversity of interests and values associated with our limited water resources.
This event will offer an opportunity for lawyers, policymakers, and water professionals to engage the experts on the challenges and emerging solutions to the most pressing water policy and management issues of the day.

The Effects Of Introspection On Computer Security Policies, Stephanie A. Trudeau
The Effects Of Introspection On Computer Security Policies, Stephanie A. Trudeau
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
What does it mean to be an expert? And what makes an expert more capable than a non-expert when it comes to evaluating and articulating their impressions about something as commonly practiced as food tasting? How do we explain those behaviors that humans perform very well, but don't quite know why? Studies have shown that there exists a class of activities that we as humans execute well intuitively, but that we perform much worse upon introspection. Evidence supports the claim that the act of introspection actually causes us to do more poorly at these tasks. My goal is to apply …

Design And Cfd Analysis Of Mass Transfer And Shear Stresses Distributions In Airlift Reactor, Rachid Bannari, Brahim Selma, Abdelfettah Bannari, Pierre Proulx
Rachid BANNARI
The design, scale-up and performance evaluation of biological reactors require accurate information about the gas-liquid flow dynamics. In this study, we use CFD techniques to investigate important parameters of the multiphase flow dynamics on an initial airlift bioreactor in order to improve its design. Such parameters are distributions of shear stresses and mass transfer. Our initial proposed design of the airlift bioreactor was used for biomass growing. Specifically to produce cellulase enzyme using the fungus Trichoderma Reesei. However, the morphology of the microorganism obtained in this bioreactor was not appropriated to produce cellulase. Since the microorganism morphology presented a small …
Two-Dimensional Matter: Order, Curvature And Defects, Mark Bowick, Luca Giomi
Two-Dimensional Matter: Order, Curvature And Defects, Mark Bowick, Luca Giomi
Physics - All Scholarship
Many systems in nature and the synthetic world involve ordered arrangements of units on two-dimensional surfaces. We review here the fundamental role payed by both the topology of the underlying surface and its detailed curvature. Topology dictates certain broad features of the defect structure of the ground state but curvature-driven energetics controls the detailed structured of ordered phases. Among the surprises are the appearance in the ground state of structures that would normally be thermal excitations and thus prohibited at zero temperature. Examples include excess dislocations in the form of grain boundary scars for spherical crystals above a minimal system …

Gauged Linear Sigma Model And Pion-Pion Scattering, Joseph Schechter, Amir H. Fariborz, Nae Woong Park, M. Naeem Shahid
Physics - All Scholarship
A simple gauged linear sigma model with several parameters to take the symmetry breaking and the mass differences between the vector meson and the axial vector meson into account is considered here as a possibly useful template for the role of a light scalar in QCD as well as for (at a different scale) an effective Higgs sector for some recently proposed walking technicolor models. An analytic procedure is first developed for relating the Lagrangian parameters to four well established (in the QCD application) experimental inputs. One simple equation distinguishes three different cases:1. QCD with axial vector particle heavier than …

Oscillation Criteria For Second-Order Forced Dynamic Equations With Mixed Nonlinearities, Ravi P. Agarwal, Agacik Zafer
Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications
We obtain new oscillation criteria for second-order forced dynamic equations on time scales containing mixed nonlinearities of the form (r(t) Φα (xΔ))Δ + f (t, xσ) = e(t), t ∈ [t0, ∞) T with f(t, x) = q(t)Φα(x) + ∑i=1nqi(t)Φβi (x), Φ* (u) = u *-1u, where [t0, ∞)T is a time scale interval with t0 ∈ T, the functions r, q, qi, e: [t0, ∞)T → ℝ are right-dense continuous with r > 0, σ is the forward jump operator, xσ(t) := x (σ(t)), and β1 > ⋯ > βm > α > βm+1 > ⋯ βn > 0. All results obtained are new even for …
